RE: Battery redundancy question
ORIGINAL: rcairflr
ORIGINAL: flyerdave I'm trying to set up my first redundant battery system in a 50cc Edge 540. I have two 2700ma 6volt battery packs. I have two sperate switches and one is plugged into the batt slot on the Rx and the other to any empty slot on the Rx. My biggest concern is, if I use two packs and one is very weak or has a bad cell . will that damage or pull down the good pack? This may seem like a foolish question. but I'm trying to learn, and no. I wouldn't use a bad pack if I knew it was bad, this is just something I have seen happen at our field. Thanks
Myself and everyone I fly with (we all fly 33% and larger) use this setup. No need for a diode (KISS). My only recommedation would be that it is time to get rid of the Nickel batteries and upgrade to A123 Someone above said that he checks his batteries every other flight. I strongly disagree, I check mine every flight. Also only charge one battery at a time (both batteries will have a common ground)
How do check A123 ? I thought the only way to check them was to charge them and see how much you put back in them . do you have to do this every flight ?

RE: A123 or Li-Ion for a 50cc yak
I just dont feel comfortable using thre A123 after reading this on the hangtimes site A close to fully charged pack, deeply discharged pack or out of balance pack may be easily mis-identified by a 'smart' charger WITH THE WRONG CELL COUNT. The results are usually always a ruined pack. If a quality balancingcharger is used and correctly connected, the charger will see the individual cell voltages in the pack, correctly identify it's cell count and usually report on the individual cell voltages all the way through the charge routine. Next issue is connector reversal. Plugging the three wire charge cord into the switch chargeport or universal cell tap backwards will usually result in the charger 'seeing' just one cell.. the results are an out of balance pack. The cure is to use the chargers 'balance charge' or 'accurate charge' routine ALWAYS... and then YOU check the display to be sure the charger has correctly identified the cell count. So I think im going to use two fromeco 2600 and a smart fly dual regulator Thanks Tim
