RE: HOUSTON
Hi JP, Mark listed in his response my RC Club, Space City RC which is located in Katy TX a WNW suburb of Houston. We have 7-8 active pattern flyers and the facility is well suited for pattern practice. Here's a link to an RCU thread containing info on our 2012 pattern event. RE: NATS and D6
....thanks guys Arrived Friday midday, met up with several D6 guys at a super secret practice site. Spend half the day today at the AMA site net working and catching up with old friends. Competition begins tomorrow. D6 is well represented in all classes, especially Advanced. I believe 6 of the 21 Advanced pilots are from D6.

My initial concern about the proposed Masters sequence is time. Has anyone timed the sequence? The current Masters sequence takes me an average of 8mins from take-off to landing. Even though the proposed sequence has 17 airborne maneuvers it contains a half clover, triangle Loop, reverse cuban eight, eight sided loop and a ¾ figure eight which these maneuvers can take considerable time to execute. The figure z and center top hat when performed big can also take considerable time.

RE: Houston, TX Pattern Contest May 5th-6th
The SCRC club's 5th annual spring pattern classic was a success. There were 31 pilot which flew 5 rounds. The weather was perfect by Texas standards, high 80s, low 90s with light to moderate winds from the south which lessened impact of the humidity. Yes, summer in Texas has arrived. The following attachments include the standings and a listing of equipment used by the competitors. I want to express my deepest thanks to SCRC club members for their continued support and the pilots who attended to make this 5th annual spring pattern classic event a huge success. Pictures will be posted soon.

Space City has plenty of room for folks to park campers, travel trailers or motor homes. As for shade, here's a video shot in 2010 at the club's Heli fun fly. It provides a good aerial perspective of the facility. [link=http://youtu.be/fK3J0vHn8e8]Video[/link] Weather report for the weekend looks outstanding.

RE: NSRCA Candidate Rules Proposal Survey is available
ORIGINAL: can773 Who is going to design airframes specifically for AMA Sportsman thru Masters? Would it not make sense for a producer of a pattern kit, to design it to be able to be legal worldwide for a larger sales base? In that case many would fly it under FAI rules which remain at 5kg, so it would make sense to design for that rule set...no?
Chad’s observation hits the preverbal nail directly on the head in my opinion.

RE: Sealing hinge gaps
Use 3M Blenderm tape if your single goal is to seal the gap for aerodynamic benefits. It's available at your local drug store. Also Du-Bro offers it so it may be at you local hobby shop as well. The tape sticks extremely well plus has stretch/flexible like properties. If the above plus cosmetic cover-up is your goal use iron on Monokote or Coverite cut to size folded in V shape to fit the hinge groove then apply iron heat to seal the edges. A trim iron works great for this task allowing you to iron down inside the hinge groove.

Royal Coachman
Recently completed project. A scratch built Royal Coachman, a Don Dewey design from 1965 RCM plans. Modified for E-power, added ailerons, carbon landing gear plus pull-pull rudder control. My brother and I logged many flight hours on this design back in the late sixties early seventies at the local football field, courtesy of the University of Pittsburgh. Then outfitted with a Bonner RC system (rudder, elevator) and a OS Max 15 (no throttle). Now Futaba 14MZ RC system, mini Futaba servos thru-out powered by a Rimfire .10 electric motor using 3SP 2200 mAh batteries. RTF weight is 2lbs 4ozs. It's covered with orange Monokote and black (carbon fiber pattern) Coverite.

RE: Measure the length of a pattern plane
ORIGINAL: jrpav1 Legend has it that the ''F3A'' spinner profile (shorter than a ''standard'' spinner profile) came about as a result of the size rule: it allows more ''airplane'' to fit within the length constraint. :) John Pavlick
...and a few grams of weight savings plus IMHO they look better on the current fuse shapes compared to a standard shape spinner.

RE: Pattern Prop
Agreed "pattern prop" is a label...however it's a label with a few implications. Google search found this write-up on Central Hobbies web site.... "Just as model airplane engines aren't all alike, so props vary quite a bit in quality and durability from make to make. When choosing the best prop for your plane/engine, you should keep several factors in mind. Plane size & weight, airfoil, thrust-to-weight-ratio, engine rpm, brake horsepower, and other factors, like the use of tuned pipes to boost rpm & torque, are handy things to consider when selecting a prop size." "The nature of Pattern flying demands agility in maneuvers, proper control of airspeed at all times, fast response, and good thrust. Matching the right prop to your engine and plane will make a big difference in every flight, in every maneuver. While engine rpm and a prop's angle of pitch will have a lot to do with the plane's speed, the prop's diameter and pitch will determine the rpm. Power, speed, and control should be balanced out, which means that, for the happiest results, the plane and the engine and the prop need to be properly matched." Although this is targeting glo power...same thought process also applies to electric power.

RE: Sebart Wind S Pro
jjldk, In low light conditions also consider sunglasses as a tool to improve aircraft visibility. In even cloudy low light conditions it can be an advantage to wear sunglasses that not only managed glare but also brightens the sky’s contrast along with enhancing visibility of certain colors of your planes scheme. I wear yellow and amber tinted sunglasses in low light conditions which enhances the cub yellow the primary base color on my plane's color schemes. The sunglasses I wear come from [link=http://www.modelglasses.com]RC Model glasses[/link]. Several of their offerings have interchangeable colored lenses that work well in various light conditions and for enhancing different colors like yellows and reds. Ask a tennis player what blue colored sunglasses do for a chartreuse/lime green colored tennis ball.
