RE: heli for a 5 year old...
I believe the first step in learning to fly heli is learning about balance (hover). MCX bypasses this important aspect. After seeing the durability of the new Blade MSR, I'm inclined to recommand this one over mcx for young person. :)

RE: heli for a 5 year old...
I have a mixed feeling about mcx for young children. Being durable is a double edged sword. Although it is good that it can take punishment, it may also give a wrong impression that it is ok to hit stuff or crash. If it was me, I would give him a sim to play with instead. I believe he will pick it up rather quickly. But, more imortantly, I would observe his behavior rather than flying itself. Most, kids will have no regard to crashing and don't work hard to avoid collision. Sign of readiness should be not how well he flies but how hard he tries to avoid a collision. After he can handle one on sim, get him a fixed pitch heli (not coaxial) that he will be somewhat more familiar in behavior to sim flying that coaxial that simply translates rather than rotato to a cyclic input. It should also be fagile enough that any impact will disable it. This should promote proper mindset as well.

It is three years but not the way most people think he practices. For the past two years, Justin has been a weekend flyer. This is because I've been working in another state during the week and able to see him and fly with him only during the weekends.

RE: 2 and a half year old pilot!!!
This is the only advise I give people when they want to fly heli's, don't cheap out, the cheap heli's have soo much slop and are poorly made, this translates into a harder to fly machine.
Unfortunately, this is a catch 22 situation. You don't want to spend much money until you like it. But, you won't get to feel how good and easy a heli can be until you spend much money. :( So, you spend little on a RTF that doesn't fly well and you give up thinking it is too hard for you.
ORIGINAL: planebuilder66 I saw that 6 year old fly a heli on U-tube when he was only 5, after seeing him fly I decided to put the heli into cold storage, I got really depressed knowing that a 5 year old can fly a heli way better than I could even imagine doing!?[8|]
When we both started on the heil in May 2006, my learning curve was much faster than Justin's. But, around 5-6th month, he started to excel and flew right past me. At that time, especially right after Justin lands, I had no energy or desire to go up. This bad feeling lasted about 6 months or so. I then became better and felt that he is who he is and I am me. I started RC because I loved it not becuase I wanted to beat Wolfgang Matt or Hanno Prattner. :) I just put in 100x more effort that Justin and one day when he slows down, I will fly right past him in my next life. :) Benny

RE: *** RCU Coverage of XFC ***
Thanks for asking! I am 100% in spirit. I am more concerned about my wife giving me an earful everytime I have to walk up to a flight line though. :( I don't know how long it takes for the nose bone to fuse together but I feel no pain and no brace as the nose was straight. It just has a 3/4" cut that is healing nicely. I do have a torn iris that is still stuck at 1/2 open so too much light and too little light messes up the brightness. The sight is still blur but it could be due to eyesight gone bad so after today's exam, I might ask for the corrective lens to replace the current eyeglass. One doc said I would have a fixed position iris and another said the motion will return. Due to the tear, the pupil is egg shaped instead of round. RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine
2. Ignition battery pack: I often forget (age factor) that people use Link this word and every other one like it in our forum to YOUR Website! LiPo, A123 and LiMn... We recommend using battery packs ranging from 4.8V to 8.0V. So 4, 5, 6 cell NiCD and NiMH will be fine. 2s A123, LiPo and LiMn are also fine.
Although the module states operating voltage higher than 6v, based on my two modules failing after about same hours on it (3-4 or so) on 2s LiPo direct, I suggest sticking to 5cell nicad/nimh max or 2s LiFe or 2s LiPo with regulator.

RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine
The ignition on MLD is robust enough to take 2s lipo directly. This is how we run ours and should reduce number of connections. If you don't like to run lipo then you can run LiFe(a123) 2s packs.

RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine
I know Justin has in him to execute anything. It is hard to change his mind or get him to do anything that is the tough part. I lucked out in convincing him that the slow-roll is a beautiful maneuver. While it took me long time (maybe 6 months) to do one not so crappy, he decided to do one that is about 6sec per roll over the runway on sim. It took him all but 3 tries on the sim to get the corrections down enough to almosst rub the wing tip over the runway while it is rolling. Then he proceeded to do the continuation in a slow rolling loop. [X(] That was most beautiful slow rolling loop I've seen. My wife and I were dumbfounded and asked him "How do you do it with no practice? You just will it to go there and the plane just magically do it?" He just laughed. So, I had to see if he could do it at the field. We took the Cermark Yak 54 and he performed the runway length slow-roll at about 15feet on the first try. I keep asking him to do the one roll circle and convinced that he can do it if he puts his mind to it. But, he just won't do it. Someone needs to convince him that IT is a beautiful maneuver that only pros do so he will want to do one. It probably is my fault for telling him that Knife-Edge spin is a cool thing. So, he loves to do it and prefer edge over yak for being able to do awesome K-E spins. He has less than 10 total flights on the 25% yak and mostly some foamy flying since last summer. But, he came back in to airplane flying again with full force as he will do rolling harrier with that airplane on the deck at will. Prior to that, he flew big airpanes only until when he was 3 1/2 years old when he decided airplane flying was boring and defected to helis. Either case, I'm very happy that he finds airplane flying interesting again. Once this kid makes up his mind, no one can change his mind. Well, at least I can't change his mind. You will be able to see his plank flying at the Nall, if you are coming.

RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine
The stopper supplied with the tank is for glow. Even if you use the gas stopper, due to 10% ethanol use in gas, it will not last long. We need gas/glow proof stoppers.

RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine
After about 30 flights with zero hickup on MLD28, the engine suddenly developed what appears to be a faulty ignition problem with occational back firing and rough run to no response and eventually dying. I orderd the replacement IG but it did not solve the problem. So, the sensor was ordered and replaced and it still did not solved the problem. So I was ready to pull the engine in for a service. The electrical system was also checked and there was no problem with the power to the module. While the engine was running, I was squeezing the wires so see if there were intermettent connection that was causing the problem. When I got to the switch, touching the swith (pressing it) caused the engine to immediately smooth out. Eureca! It was caused by the faulty switch contact that started to lose contact under a running engine. So, even if the switch appears to work, it can cause intermettent problems under vibration conditions. Needless to say, I replaced the switch and the engine and the plane combo is working flawlessly again. [:D]

RE: MLD-28 gasoline engine
The engine is still on its 1st gallon after about 10 flights on Cermark Yak54. We've been running APC 17x6 until today. There was a definite lack of available thrust to pull the plane out of trouble quickly. I put on a APC 18x6w and it became a completely different animal that is comfortable at any altitude. This is the prop that Steve recommended. I resisted until now but after seeing close to 9k rpm with 17x6, I was convinced that 18x6w would work well. Well, it works better than well. [:D] I too would recommend this prop whole heatedly. 135g is a bit heavy compared to wooden prop. At some point, I will experiment with some wood. But, for now, I think I have found the prop for this motor and the plane. It makes a range of maneuvers look better. [:D] Steve, We'll try to post a video when we get back from Las Vegas.

I believe FS One was $180 w/o the box initially. It is now $79. If it goes down a bit more, it might be worth it as a reasonable low cost sim.

Hollywood: I'm glad the flight left you a positive impression of what you must do. As a beginner, I too have often wondered if it is me or the aircraft and wished that someone who is more capable to take it to the limit. So, when asked to do the very thing was hoping for as a newbie, I would not hesitate for a moment to do the demo. It is done with sole purpose to instill the very feeling you got after I was done with HBK2 flight. [:D]

RE: Youngest 3D Pilots - Are you teaching your kids to fly? At what age?
Here is a new RC heli pilot from Korea. His name is Min-Chan Kim. He was around 4 years and 3 monts (in April 2008) so he is about 1 1/2 year younger than Justin Chi. He placed 2nd in expert class competition at that time at the Korea 3d Masters.

RE: Youngest 3D Pilots - Are you teaching your kids to fly? At what age?
aeroflipz: Congrats on your son's interest in the hobby. When my son showed interest in flying, I assumed that all kids took after their fathers interest. However, I learned that they have a mind of their own and the hobby is no exception. It really doesn't matter who teaches who as it has nothing to do with whose shwarz is bigger. I'm pretty sure your son will progress 10x faster than you as young minds are like sponge in learning. It is about enjoying the passion together and have something in common to talk about. Your son is also blessed in that his interest in this hobby will be supported by you fully (I hope). Please keep us updated on your son's progress with videos. You might consider getting a fraps video capture utility for recording the videos.

RE: Help PLZ!! Need Advice-Raptor vs. Venture
Master chief: What Rafael says is 100% true. This is no longer whic is superior/inferior question. DO pick the heli that your field pros use. No matter how much info you get off of here, it will not match the collective (pun intended) hands on experience on that model the field guys use. As for 30 vs 50, stay away from the 30. 50 is not that much different in price but performance will be there when you need it and it uses larger blade which makes it a tad more stable.

RE: What comes after the PICCO or the HAVOC?
HeloHurtz Smaller and cheaper heli flying could be compared to balancing a stick on your finger tip vs putting a ball between the stick and your finger. When links are not smooth and precise without slop, you do not have a connected feel and there is a much wider dead zone where the heli will not respond to a small correction right a way. Justin can hover Trex450se much much more steady than he would with a blade cp. That is because the linkages on trex450se has much better fit without slop or binding. This translates into more direct connection between the pilot and the machine.
ORIGINAL: Cambo Wayne i have to agree with you. A 4 year old can be pretty unpredictable. Last week, i got bit by some bug on my finger when i was comming in for a landing on my funtana x50. It hert like absolute hell but i faught through it and landed the plane. I didn't want to put anybody in danger and dipped it in kind of hard, didn't damage the plane, but broke a prop. Now imagen if that had happend to little Justin. What would he have done? He could have completely blanked on the helicopter and just worried about his finger. Now we got a very high performance, dangerouse, machine ripping through the air uncuntrolled. I understand kids flying little electrics and even trainers but a .90 size heli at the age of 4?
That gives me an idea. I believe we should use "bee toxin blow dart test" on all flyers at random. This should be a final test to make sure all members regardless of their age are safe to fly. [:D]

RE: What comes after the PICCO or the HAVOC?
What Dog said is true too. There is no progression from smaller to bigger in that order. If you are serious about learning, yes I would highly recommand 50 nitro over ANYTHING. They are WAY more stable than any of the smaller variety when learning. Crash can be avoided with the aid of a good sim while learing to hover. Crashes that come after learning, well that is another story..... [:D]
