RE: Everything Radial Engines
I always thought the conventional wisdom was that the bushed connecting rod ends need at least 10% oil, and usually more (witness OS and Saito recommendations of 16-18%). That's not a function of the type of fuel; it's true whether glow or gas. I thought gas engines used needle bearings at the conrod ends to enable low content (such as 50:1, or 2%). Am I missing something? Or do you just resort to gas with 10-15% oil?

RE: CORBY STARLET BY CHRIS WHITE
I fly my 52/70 Corby Starlet with a Saito 72 and a 14x5 prop, so she'll slow down a bit to land. With those big ailerons way out toward the tips I won't do flaperons, but I do prefer to fly the plane with a good headwind, at least 8 mph. She doesn't like to come down!

RE: Everything Radial Engines
VP Racing Methanol (M1) has a purity of 99.95%, versus the NEMCO methanol spec of 99.85%. So the purity is a little lower. Methanol is so hygroscopic (absorbs moisture) that it won't stay at such high purity once opened, so in fuel use I doubt it would make a big difference. 0.05% is 500 ppm (parts per million), and that's precious little impurity - tough to keep it that pure outside of a laboratory. What sort of problems are people claiming? Or is it just conjecture?

RE: Corby Starlet
Global Hobby had provided parts support for the Sportsman Aviation ARFs. Here's a link to the parts that remain http://globalservices.globalhobby.com/part/127532.asp. Note that they're out of cowls and canopies, which are the usual parts needed. They seem to have wheel pants, though! If it isn't here, then you're looking to ship from from one of the hobby shops in Oz. For examples, Tates has the cowl - http://www.rcworld.com.au/corby-small-cowl-only.html. Most folks just fix them up. I've a plug for the 52/70 canopy, for example.
ORIGINAL: w8ye The three cylinders are still on my three 125A's. If I could sell them IÂ would put the new type cylinders on these engines. The original 125 cylinder is bad about breaking out the exhaust threads if you crash. That was the reason for the new cylinder on the 125 that I played with last Christmas. I tried to trade the owner out of it but I was unsuccessful.
A friend asked me to fix his FA125 that had its exhaust port broken off in a crash. Are you still willing to sell a cylinder?

TexasSkypilot, was curious about those DS821's. They've been very attractively priced second-hand and I've acquired a number of them, but have yet to encounter any problems. JR says their trouble with broken splines was the use of thread locker - was that your experience? Or did they just shear "unprovoked"?

RE: Flameouts on Take-Off, ST3000
I think you hit the nail on the head, Bax! I had become enamoured with low idle, put an onboard glow unit on the motor and had been running as low as 1400 rpm. There is definitely an interaction. Should I try the idle at say 2000 rpm? Thanks very much, RB8

Flameouts on Take-Off, ST3000
Every third or fourth flight the ST3000 on my 38.5% Corby Starlet will "flame-out" - taxies out to the runway just fine, throttles up well and then maybe 10 seconds after full throttle she dies. The OS 7D carb seems to be set just fine, great transition & steady idle at ~1700 rpm. Engine runs wide-open throttle at about 300 rpm off peak (7400 rpm), running a fairly high-oil fuel for break-in (~7% nitro, 16% oil with 50/50 castor/synthetic). 18x8 prop, Hangar 9 3011 (four-stroke) plug, all large size fuel tubing, clunk drilled out, large filter, Bisson pitts muffler. I can have 2-3 flights and she runs strong, then a flameout and things get exciting. I'm wondering if perhaps I'm setting the high-speed needle a bit too lean? Something new for me is how the larger engines react once airborne and unloaded; I really notice too rich a HS needle setting as a lack of power, and think perhaps the flameouts tell me she's too lean? Thanks, RB8

And yes, would not mind selling the NIB 38.5% Starlet. Nearly have the other one done, currently fitting a sliding canopy at the moment. Did a laminated ply frame for the canopy ala Faye Stilley. Thinking perhaps to fly it before finishing out the cockpit - perhaps just do the panel for now. Have not found a reasonably priced 35-40% full-body pilot. RB8

Thanks for all the comments, especially yours, Ross. I think I'll go ahead with the single plug R5. I like low rpms at idle, and glow drivers are relatively cheap insurance. I've been getting single and twin units from heliaddictuk, and have a couple of three cylinder units from Sonic-tronics. RB8

RE: Wing Hold-down Bolts Strong Enough?
I was going to bolt a 3/8" ply plate to offset the FT-240 and bring it forward to match the cowl (set to fit the ST3000) In the end that wasn't necessary, and I was able to just install another four blind nuts and mount the FT-240 directly to the box - those nuts were spread pretty much to the edges of the box, but still inside the ply "sides". Don't know if an FT-300 has a different bolt pattern - perhaps you could ask Scalebirdman, I believe he has a giant Corby with an FT-300. R - RB8

RE: Everything Radial Engines
Running the 735 properly propped and limiting it to 5200 rpm makes no sense - strictly would be a display / demonstration piece. If not a typo, the rpm limit on the UMS 735 struck me as some sort of mechanical limitation (ie, valves start to float). But Maxam, you can run it up to 7500 without such an issue, so the only thing left to my mind is excessive wear. This would be the case if the design or metallurgy is inherently limited, like the 770 and 990 which have similar limits. Unfortunately, wear might take some time to show up. RB8

RE: Everything Radial Engines
Sundownee, I had the same concern about the UMS 735 - bottom line, it has to turn much more than 5200 rpm. Maxam (post 2664) ran his up to 7,500 rpm with an APC 17x8, which ThrustHP computes should give 2 Hp for 14 lb thrust at 57 mph. Only question is reliability - where does that 5,200 rpm limit come from? The larger engines? Quote is from post 2519.
ORIGINAL: redball8 UMS Seidel dropped

I usually find a local speed shop; they'll sell methanol by the sealed 5-gallon pail. Used to be all of $30, but these days and depending on the market maybe you'll pay as much as $60.
