RE: Top Flite GS P-47 sports scale; diary of a build
Looks really good Tony. You gotta make a video when you get everything hooked up and adjusted out.

RE: Top Flite Giant P-47 Build
I finished up the firewall and I also got the cowl filled and ready for primer. I checked on paint today with Klass Kote. I didn't catch the name of the gentleman that I talked to there, but he was very nice and very helpful. Now I just need to figure out how to pay for it. [:@]

RE: Top Flite Giant P-47 Build
I would say as long as you can get it level and in the position indicated on the plans without changing the saddle, glue it. If you want to check it with a meter, zero the meter out on your building table, that will give you your Datum Line, then check the stab. By looking at the photos I'd assume that you are pretty darn close to where you need to be. Let us know how it turns out Fabio.

RE: Top Flite Giant P-47 Build
Fabio, I lined up the stab with the dotted lines and then made sure it was level. If you have an incidence meter you can check it. The plans side view state the it should be +1. I didn't check mine as everything lined up and was level with little to no sanding required, so I just went with it. I did re-check it about every 10 min because when the epoxy was setting up it wanted to shift a little. Make sure you have plenty of time to hang around while it's setting up to make minor adjustments.

RE: Top Flite Giant P-47 Build
Yesterday I got the cockpit installed and also the super charger exit. The cockpit at times put up a tough fight, but I one the battle. I backed up the styrene with balsa sheet and to simulate the armor plate behind the headrest I filled it with Bondo and held that angle until it cured. I'm thinking I should start on the cowl next and get it mounted, filled, and in primer.

RE: DA 150
Keep in mind I don't claim to be an expert, but I will share with you what the gasser guys at my club told me. When breaking in a new engine they suggested using Pennzoil Air-cooled 32/1. Breaking in an engine and seating the ring will take forever if using synthetic oil. The motor spitting out black junk is going to happen with any oil before it is fully broken in. I run between 3-5 gal of gas mixed with Pennzoil before I switch to high quality synthetic. When breaking in I notice a big difference week to week as the motor breaks in and the power goes up. It's almost unbelievable how much these engines change. When I start seeing it level off, I go to synthetic 50/1. Just my humble opinion, hope it helps.

RE: Top Flite Giant P-47 Build
Excellent tip Chad, Thank you. I'm going to give that a shot. Nice start Fabio, don't worry about the resin sticking, it will. The only problem I had with the rudder was I ham-hands it and my thumb went completely through the sheeting. Nothing a little wood, CA, and filler couldn't fix![:D]

RE: Top Flite Giant P-47 Build
I finished up the panel lines on the top of the wing and had an opportunity tonight to shoot some primer with the wind not blowing. I just had to see it together again. Wifey wanted to see it too. I tried earlier in the build to heat up some clear sheet with my heat gun to form the wing tip lenses. It didn't work out too well back then, but I may try again and see if I can get it to work. I may have been trying to use too small a piece.

RE: Top Flite Giant P-47 Build
I just received a question via email on the inter-cooler doors. The kit really doesn't provide enough material to cut them, and if you happen to make a mistake as I did the first cut, there is absolutely not enough there. So, what I did was go to the local home improvement mega mart and bought a parking sign made out of approximately the same thickness material. If anyone is needing some, I have quite a bit left over. I can send it to you for the price of shipping. Other than that, you could just go down and buy one of those signs for about 7 bucks and have a bunch left over as I do.

RE: Top Flite Giant P-47 Build
Nobody is muddying up the water, that is why I love these threads. Always something to learn from someone else.(when RCU works properly) I read that Split Second has micro-balloons in it, I wonder if one could add that to Bondo and get the same result? Hmmm....I might have to test that theory. Russ, on my 60 size P47, I took a brass tube and sharpened on end then took a small dowel and made a handle for the other end by gluing the brass into a hole I drilled in the dowel.. I sat in front of the TV for many nights putting rivets on that plane. I'll NEVER do it that way again, talk about a pain in the neck!

It was interesting reading over the specs of the Oracal. It does say this: Resistance to solvents and chemicals After 72 hours adhered to aluminum at room temperature, resistant to most oils and greases, weak acids and alkalis http://www.oracal.com/products/product.asp?seriesID=218&tabID=ts

Fabio, The Oracal is what I have that Mirce cut for me (the detail set) As for Russ, he said that he was cutting his own with some stuff his wife had laying around. (craft vinyl?)

RE: Top Flite Giant P-47 Build
Russ, that is exactly what my vinyl material is. I looked on the back and it says Oracal Economy Cal 641. I think you may be on to something there, I don't know where one can get it here in the states, as you know mine came from Yugoslavia from Mirce. I am pretty sure it is the same stuff that is used for car and bus wraps, so sign companies should have it. Pretty durable stuff no doubt.

RE: Top Flite Giant P-47 Build
Hi Russ, That's a good point that you bring up there. The primer I am using is solvent based, the lite coat I put over the elevators and rudder had no affect on the vinyl. As for the paint, I have not ordered it yet but I am almost 100% sure that I am going to use Klass Kote epoxy. I will have to ask them when I order if they think it will cause any reaction towards the vinyl. Gary

RE: Top Flite Giant P-47 Build
I don't know what the heck is going on with RCU but when I go to post there is a big whited out area in front of where I want to type??? Anywho? I got the bottom of the wing panel-lined today and shot with primer. Line's are pretty close to scale. I will wet-sand it back a little, then add the vinyl before I lite primer it one more time

RE: Top Flite Giant P-47 Build
Yep, I'm going to take the tape off after I get the vinyl with a lite coat on it. Well, welcome to the build Fabio, you have always kinda been here though :) That's a good looking Jug that you sold. I don't know about that one but my 60 size flys well, she came out pretty heavy at almost 13#'s but it still fly's ok. I'm hoping to see a huge difference in the way this big one flys, I hope it feels a little "lighter" on the wing.

The fuse is basicly ready for paint after I add the vinyl rivets. She is going back in the house and I will get the wing out this week to do panel lines. My lovely wife said I could set up a stand in the house and work on the wing if I promised not to make a mess.[;)]

RE: Top Flite Giant P-47 Build
LOL Chad, No I don't think so, not detailed like I'm doing this one. There are a handful of guys at our club in Austin that build and do all the detailing, but most of the members assemble ARFs and/or fly 3D, it's really a shame. Fact is, at our last club meeting we found out that out of all our events this summer, the Warbird was the one that generated the least amount of cash. We only had 10 pilots show up and we just barely broke even. So with that said, we won't be having a Warbird in 2013, They will maybe replace that event with another Electric or Heli Fest. It's kinda upsetting, but we have to change with the times or our club will suffer.[&o] Anthony, I think you mentioned in your Contender thread that you lost that Waco, terrible news. Sorry for your loss, I didn't see pictures, but I'm sure she was a beautiful plane. Thanks for your input guys.

RE: Top Flite Giant P-47 Build
Some of the guys I fly with told me it's taking me to long to put this plane together, 14 months to this point may be a little long, but I think I'm doing pretty good and not getting burned out in the mean time. What do ya'll think?

RE: Top Flite Giant P-47 Build
I finished up the rudder and elevators and put a lite coat of primer on, I think it looks pretty good. The transfer tape provided makes getting the vinyl in the right spot the first time very simple. Will start panel lining the wing this week.

RE: Top Flite Giant P-47 Build
Started applying the vinyl this morning to the leading edge of the elevators. Mirce was supposed to supply a negative template of these areas and then I build it up with primer. What he sent was a positive, so really all I have to do is apply the vinyl and seal it with a lite coat of primer. No big deal as it will actually be a little easier.

RE: Top Flite Giant P-47 Build
I'm anxious too Fabio, believe me. But as Chad mentioned, the vinyl is the last thing to go on before paint and unfortunately I'm not quite ready for that yet. I'm afraid if I put the rivets on to soon they will fall off due to over-handling. I haven't been posting much because I am still priming, sanding, and finish filling the minor imperfections with Bondo (Kinda boring) I am just about ready to panel line the wing and do the primer filler on the front of the rudder and elevators, I will post some pics of that when I get to it, hopefully by Monday.

RE: Why not a Webra engines thread?
I always use a heat gun to warm the cylinder head up to allow the aluminum to expand, this will help with getting the liner unstuck. Some guys also throw them in an oven to do the same thing.

The stickers are about as thick as HVAC foil tape. It shows through the paint as a raised panel or rivet. I was cutting all the panels out of the tape and it was driving me crazy trying to get them perfect. This is a much better option for me personally.

RE: Top Flite Giant P-47 Build
I just returned from vacation in Mexico and will be getting back to work on the jug. I received the finish set from Mirce, and this morning I also ordered the detail set from him. He provides all the panels, hatches, inspection covers and also templates to do the raised surfaces on the rudder and elevators with built up primer. Here are a few photos that he posted on his Meister build thread.

Mirce, I did receive the finish set for my TF Giant P-47. I was in Mexico for the past 2 weeks on vacation and I just picked it up from my friend who went to the post office and picked it up for me. I am VERY happy with the quality of everything that you provided. Thank you so much.
