i have a 25% yak with ca hinges. works well for me. i also use the crayola method, or a slight film of vasilene. after bending the hinge. once bent i pin it in place then install the the moveable surface. when i'm sastified with the movement, then i ca. works 4 me. after reading this thread, i think i'm gonna try robart hinges and monkey glue next though. red

RE: ...If fish could scream...
just knock 'em out with an appropriate size club, or gag there mouth. remove hook. let 'em go, or keep if you eat 'em. top of the foodchain. do you think they waste bullets on cows. worked at a turkey farm once. hang the live turkey by it's legs on a conveyer, stab through the neck, stab again in an "X", and push the electrocute button. weren't pretty, but people line up at thanksgiving and x-mas as long as someone else will do their dirty work for them. i'm a deer hunter too, and eat what i shoot. i don't take questionable shots either. dead for sure, or pass the shot. i eat maine lobster, the best there is. don't care if they're bottom feeders, they taste great!! eat clams, they live in mud! i don't think people fish with cats or dogs. it ain't natural bait. when i have caught sand sharks or dog fish as they call 'em here in new england. your best luck would be to use a fish, maybe mackeral, with its belly slit. haven't caught one in 40 years, but i think we used the inards of cleaned keepers. i'd still fish. red ps: great thread!!! lovin' it

RE: How many times do you crash?
been flying over 30 years. not sure how many planes i've owned. damn near crashed them all. either dumb thumbs, or mechanical, or bad set up (metal clevis on throttle arm) planted that one on maiden into a frozen lake. self designed trainer type, disingrated in high speed dive. funscale p51, flew over my head, turned around........ toothpicks. last one was a nose heay ultra stick 40 with a .61 on the nose. landed in the weeds, and ripped off the landing gear< repaired. parkzone, radion powered gliger, stalled, nose broken off< repaired. bashed a bunch of foamies, including edf's. cap 232 with missing wood on the wingspar. wing folded on it's second flight, into asphalt. lost an os .61 with that one. planted a seagull models seabee pattern plane last year, about it's 5th or 6th flight. doing high speed passes, half the elevator decided to fly on it's own LOL. spectator told me afterwards he heard the "buzzing" flutter. asked him why he didn't say anything, he just walked away with his head down! LOL i owe him one. got a 25% yak 54 gasser. my first gasser. $700 invested, flown it twice, but my knees still knock. HA-HA will plant that one sooner or later. hotdogging with an h9 '80 j3 cub, and stalled it about 10 feet off the deck. numerous crashes learning to fly heli's. jr venture, had the glow plug remove it's self twice. started using red loctite after those. they don't glide well from 20 feet and being a heli newbie. but i learn from all my crashes. that's how i taught myself to fly!!!

RE: crrc 40
i'd still check the timing. mine ran too, even with the timing that far off. but i think you'll get more power with the corect timing. first link is for a degree wheel, second one is a thread that explains how to do it with a piece of paper. mine wasn't the only one that the timing was that far off. if you read around it's common with these engines. couldn't even adjust it without removing it and zip tying it. it was that far off and out of the screw hole range. i liked the degree wheel, cause that's what i know. used to be a motorcycle mechanic in the late '70's http://www.ch-ignitions.com/timing.html http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=9132802

from 28 to 30 deg. i printed out a degree wheel from i think ch ingtions, pasted it on card board, made a pointer from a coat hanger. took the plug out and grounded it to the engine, then watched for the spark. i'll see if i can find some links for ya.
ORIGINAL: Tired Old Man I've seen full scalers performing hovers, harriers, harrier rolls, walls, and knife edge spins in person. The full scalers are doing much to perform many of the maneuvrs we do. As for the gyro... If you use a gyro, what did you learn????? Most use a sim for initial then burn lots of gas for real to learn how. It's all about practice, and having absolute confidence in you plane, engine, and your own ability to react to the visual cues in front of you to input controls correctly.
I've tried a you tube search for full scale without much luck. You wouldn't have a link would you. Much appreciated. Thanks Red

RE: Learning To Hover
ORIGINAL: Lazer You know I guess it's me but I'm impressed with the skill and challenge that it takes to hover, but it's not even close to real and it's very simply show boating, but then again I would like to put smoke on my quarter scale. Go figure.
no hard feelings. we all enjoy what we do. no need to knock me for trying to expand my skills, even if you think only heli's should hover. Yup i agree showboating, skill too. i can fly loops, rolls, snaps, etc, this stuff, harriers, hover, knife edge, waterfalls is just the next step out of boredom. still have an avistar trainer, radion glider for lazy flying but......... smoke IS the next stage. it was on a h9 80" cub with a homemade preheater on a .61 evo engine have it all set to go, made it removable as a seperate unit. love this hobby. almost had my full scale certificate before i ran out of cash. 24 hrs. solo, 48 with an instructor. everything but the check ride. still have the plans of an experimental plane i was going toing to build. so i'm far from being a newbie. my heli's i started with fixed pitch, then a trex 450, then the jr 30 cp. the bigger was the easiest to fly. set up is harder with heli's, but that's the challenge. need to be challenged or it's boredom. this is my first gasser. just another challenge for me. love to learn!! i noticed you say on your profile that you are an expert. have you ever competed other than fun flys? i haven't, but i've designed and flown over ten models, glow and eletric, edf too, but by no means am i an expert. an expert has all the answers or at the least most, or a big ego. i'll never stop learning till i'm dead. this is just a way to learn for me. i'd love to 3d just for the ooh's and ahh's. maybe it is an ego thing. i love this hobby but when it's at a standstill i get bored. to each their own, wouldn't agree. regards red
ORIGINAL: nonstoprc Besides proper CG, make sure the plane is balanced laterally so that u do not want to worry about side-way movement when u are facing one side of the plane. Learn the hover with plane's top view is clear. Later on, allow the plane to rotate. Throttle, rudder and elevators are the key sticks to use.
thank you much. didn't think about lateral balance. haven't done that with this plane, but i will. side note i just downloaded 5 add on of the realflight website, now i have to install them thanks all red
ORIGINAL: thevirginian redneck, you state you can hover in RF4.5. What airplane have you hovered? Most palnes in RF4.5 are too easy to hover and don't compare to RC model ariplanes.
i fly mosly the yak. i'll try your knifeedge suggestion. had a flat foaime, actually went through a couple. it was called a tribute. with a rearward cg that hovered great. no longer in production.i'm sure i could scratch something real close. i might have no problem at all with it. i'm experienced enough to expirement with the cg, when the time comes. my yak from peak models seems to fly light, haven't weieghed it yet though. thanks for your help. btw. lazer, i also hover with a jr 30 cp venture. look at my profile and check my gallery. i've also looped and rolled it. not too many full scale will do that either! rednekk

RE: Learning To Hover
Thanks for the replies. I have hovered foamies, can hover in realflight 4.5. what makes it easier in realflight is moving the cg rearward. have used a gyro (ex 100 by expert) in a overpowered sport plane on the rudder. that one was a taildragger and was squirrely on take off. gyro made t.o.'s straight as an arrow. have a 25% yak 54 with a spe 43 that i've only flown a few times. engine is not broken in yet so i haven't tried to hover it. just curious if people have played with cg to make things easier? mine balances where it's supposed to be. geuss i'll wait 'n see. btw, i do fly with rudder. thanks red
