RE: mechanism for making a retractable tailhook on Hellcat?
Hey DaveGee, my only thought or concern is whether the airflow from the model in flight will cause the carrier hook once extended, to almost move from a hook down position to a straight back position when extended out from the fuse. What do you think? Chic

Wonderful technique, simple, yet effective. Innovation at its best. Please continue to polish the mechanics as I will follow this thread and use your same procedure in my 1/6 scale TBF Avenger. Chic

RE: 25% Cessna L-19/0-1 Bird Dog build
Hey Frank99, trust me, we are all over our heads. I have learned soooooo very much here on this build thread. Ask any question and someone will certainly give you a very reasonable and sound answer. I'm building this DAWG and Charlie's (Firebar) Avenger (his design). I have learned so much just reading and asking how the h#%* they did that. Every question I have asked has received numerous responses that have taught me well. If I can help with pictures of anything I have done with the DAWG, let me know. Charlie is a great builder, and do not forget to email Roy, the DAWG designer. Chic

RE: Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build
Hi Guys, As always, I am going to school off you fellows. You guys are great teachers. School is back in, especially now that Jim has painted his Avenger. Another lesson learned. After reading both Firebar and Jim's write-up, I will probably follow Firebar on the paint with Klass Kote. Will practice on the Bird Dog that I too am re-habbing. Starting on the 2nd wing panel of the DAWG. Stay well everyone. Chic

RE: 25% Cessna L-19/0-1 Bird Dog build
Frank, I truly understand those medical issues, I have had several myself. Hopefully, God willing, they are behind me and I pray you too will get well soon. Ken certainly did a wonderful build. I think everyone on this build thread has taught each of us something. I had the pleasure of meeting him and his family when they came to visit and perform here in Washington, D.C. Ken and I visited the new addition of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. We had a great time. Hey, if any of you DAWG fans come to D.C., let me know, I enjoy the trip to the mall, oooops, thats my wife speaking, I mean the museum. Smile. I believe I showed how I did the wing hard point brackets in this build. If not, let me know and I will email pictures to you. Chic

RE: 25% Cessna L-19/0-1 Bird Dog build
Warbirdracer, great pictures. great build and yes, the plans do call for 1.5 degrees of washout. The way your DAWG is flying tells me the airframe must of been built per Roys' plans. Roy personally said without the washout, you will have more then your hands full. I will be using a DA50 instead of the Zenoah 45. Glad to know that the 58 flies the airframe well. Guess I am following your lead on powerplants. Was suspcious of the 45 with the weight that the DAWG was slowly building up. Frank99, the duffle bags supplied the troops with meds, tools, letters, ammo, etc. I saw the setup in the Squardon Series Book and also in the hard cover book on the BirdDog. How easy are the takeoffs, I have had a bit of a problem with taildraggers (cubs). Chic

RE: Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build
Hey there Warbirdracer, I'm building Roy's (Vallicourt) qtr. scale L-19. It is listed under RC WARBIRDS, page 3 (at the moment), titled: 25% Cessna L-19/O-1 Bird Dog Build. A fellow named Ken Hodges started the thread then we teamed up to continue the build. I almost finished mine but as you see, a major screw up by me. Ken did not finish his but I will certainly finish me so that I can get back to the Avenger build. Chic

RE: Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build
Hi Peter, I completely agree with Fleet. The Jet Boys told me directly to use Velcro "ONLY" along with foam supports for the fuse's. Wings attached to the side walls by velcro also. They are speaking from experience - travelling to a fly in, then opening the trailer doors and seeing their jets having been moved around and about and thus damaged solely because the bungee cords allowed far tooooo much up/down and/or left/right movement. OK, back to the workshop for me. Chic

RE: Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build
OK Guys, I can not tell a lie. I live tooooo close to Mount Vernon, GW's house (cherry tree). Any hoooooo, I had built the wing panels for the DAWG and had painted the fuse when of all people, Charlie sent me an email basically telling me to check the washout of the wing panels because without it, the DAWG flies terrible. Of course I followed Charlie's lead and guess what I found - at the root it measured 0 degrees, at the tip, it measured 0 degrees. Right, I did not build in the 1.5 degrees of washout. Thanks to Charlie, I got a wing short kit (ribs) and began to rebuild the wing panels. Check the last entry under the 25% Cessna Bird Dog Build here on RCU. Thanks to Charlie, I'll have a better flying DAWG. So that backs me up several weeks but Noah, I'm still working on the DAWG and glancing over to admire the Avenger. You'll hear me holler all the way out West when again, I start back working on the Avenger. Nats 2013 I still hope to attend. Chic

RE: 25% Cessna L-19/0-1 Bird Dog build
OK, before I take my wife on a short vacation to Charleston, SC, I framed up the first of two re-build wing panels. As Ken stated on page 12 of this thread, I built the new panel just as Roy Vaillycourt told me to do BUT for the life of me, I can not see the washout. I'm trusting what Roy told me and I will press on when I return from my WIFE'S vacation and build the other wing panel. I will sheet the right panel before I move on to the left panel. I installed the flap and duffle bag release servos, not yet the aileron servo. The control arms for the flaps and ailerons will be hidden as before.

OK all you Avenger pilots, you heard the spokesperson on Casey's video, no hard flying manuevers or other silly shananagans (sp) with this airplane, it is meant to fly smoothly. Great video. You guys who are flying the airframe, are you taking off without elevator or letting it 3 point itself into the air. Well Noah, how are your new digs? Chic

RE: Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build
I love hearing all you guys talk "AVENGER" talk. Really enjoy hearing and learning from you guys. By the way, Charlie, the jet guys taught me to not use bungy cords to tie down models in trailers, but rather, strap the model in cradles with VELCRO only. The bungy cords allow the models to float about while bouncing along the roads, whereas the velcro secures the models firmly to the floor, to the cradle, etc. I use velcro in my trailer and Ford Epedition EL with great success. I saw Grover's TBM, well done, well done Grover. Larry, needlepoint, almost agree with you myself after viewing Pete's stuff. What a builder, what a builder. But as I did with you and Noah, I am going to school off of him also. Have alot to learn from all of you. Peter, what kind of paint will you use? Noah, hope the repairs are not tooooo involved? I'm sure the French Avenger will return to flying missions soon. Stay well everyone, stay well. Ebay or Target for the Snoopy shirt. Especially if you are flying that dog house. [:D] Chic

Many thanks to both of you (Noah, Grover) for recognizing my beautiful wife. Shirley just told me I can take a lesson from both of you. I have about 10 days of teaching, if you call it that (field trips, picnics, etc.). Finish painting the DAWG, then on to the Avengers fuse. The full scale Avenger is due to arrive in late fall. Can not wait to see it. Heck, I'll sweep the floor just to put in a nut and a bolt. Chic

RE: Charlie Kellogg's TBM Avenger Build
Great award Noah, looks like you are enjoying and really taking to your new surroundings. With that smile on your face, you look like a mouse would if it was all alone in a cheese factory for the weekend. Congrats my friend. I too saw the Avenger photo, hummmmm. Well guys, I was able to meet Grover of the Commerative Air Force. He is also an Avenger builder on our thread, we found out that we did not live far apart. He told me of the "Redtail" P-51C Mustang that would be laying over here in the Washington, D.C. area. You know I had to go see that for sure. Meeting him was quite an honor. He even invited me to come be a part of the restoration of a full scale Avenger. Won't pass that up either. Grover, you are quite a gentlemen, it was my honor and it certainly was a wonderful visit with you. The Tuskegee Airmen P-51C along with the BT-13 are both part of a travelling "REDTAIL" show. The aircraft are flown and the rest is partly contained in an 18 wheeler. Needless to say, the P-51C is gorgeous. Server will not let me post pictures. Will try later. Chic
