P-26 builders experience
I'm currently scratch building a P-26 Peashooter, using Royal plans. I'm looking for advice, and suggestions on an engine choice before I complete the fuse assembly. What have you used, seen used, or failed at? Gas or glow, just looking at suggestions as far as balance, prop size etc. Anyone ever tried a reduction to use a more scale size prop?

RE: Royal P-26 Group Build
I won the auction...I'll let you know. I already have a set of plans, but I wanted a kit to put on the shelf, and back up information. I also wanted to get ahold of the cowl to make a mold. I paid less than $300, with shipping. Anyone know what this kit retailed for, just out of curiosity?

You want to see vintage...?
Hi guys. Don't usually post on this section, as my flight style has always tended to be a little more of a "modern airframe" I suppose. However, I did have the unrivaled pleasure of watching a truly vintage Tiger Moth fly Sunday. This airframe is original from the 40's with the linen covering being a few years newer. The servos (...I think) and engine are all modern, but the original engine that flew the plane still exists. Here's a [link=http://www.whitleycountybarnstormers.mysite.com/photo4_1.html]link[/link] to the pictures, and I'll see if I can get Stan to tell the story of the plane, and provide some more pictures. It's great. He has big plans for the plane, and with his skills, will definitely be show worthy. Make sure you ask about how she loops. Caused about a dozen simultaneous heart attacks, including the surprised pilot (Stan).

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Whats the magic number for turns out on the HS needle (for a good start) on the older ones? 2.5 or 5? Somewhere in between?

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Need a little help. I have an older 91S, (black and gold box, old label"Hemi Head High powered High Cam Series") that I just can't tune. I've got six other Saitos from a .72 to the FG36, and have never had trouble with them. I don't have the directions (bought used) so I don't know if they set up the same as newer carbs. I've already removed the choke. It starts great, and idles great. I just can't advance the throttle and keep it running. Dialed idle needle in, dialed it back out. Started with the HS needle at 2.5 out and can run it out forever and keep it running at idle. Waited the prerequisite 7 Mississippi's between adjusments. I started over a dozen times, even flew another plane to think. Just can't get it run and stay running. I've checked the tank, the lines, everything, because it seems like an air leak. It's on a Sig Hog, and the tank center is on the carb center. I keep thinking it must be something with the older model...even though I know it's not true. Anyone??

RE: Covering claimed to be Monokote on Great Planes RV-4 after 2-1/2 years
I also found the new monokote to be lower quality than the old formula. Know what I did? I quit using it!! You said your self "...it's one heck of a nice flying airplane...". Go fly it then! You can't see the defects in the air. If you can, strip the covering and put on something you like! It's doubtful you'll enter your ARF in Top Gun.
This White and Black are not reformulated Monokote on my RV-4.
Yes, it is. All monokote is a new formula due to environmental regulations. Who introduced the regulations or what they are, I've never heard. My theory is the profit margin from the new, cheaper mono is the reason, and environment is the excuse. One man parades take time to build up steam. I do wish you luck in your attempt. Maybe consider your method, though. I doubt Bax will read this thread, smack his forehead, and call a meeting with R&D demanding answers. In the meantime, buy an RV-4 kit, build it and cover it the way you like. You'll forget all about your problems.

RE: My TNP Shoestring is finished
Here's the maiden for mine last year. Fiberglass and paint, Saito 100. She flies like a dream, and although it's not quite a rocket, you'll be amazed at how stable it is. Doesn't slow down a bunch for landing (as evident by the 27 bounce landing on the vid) but I did get it figured out a little better in subsequent flights. Great build, wasn't it Deadeye? RE: Royal P-26 Group Build
You don't need mirror plans, just rub the plans with vegetable oil and the image is clear as day on the other side.
The plans I bought are on heavier stock than the originals were, and even on the copies, I didn't want the mess. Oiled plans+10 metric ton of sawdust=messier than needed. In my shop, I sometimes get behind on cleanup the way it is. I keep thinking I'll sweep and uncover a whole forgotten airplane one day. Plus, since I'm getting extra copies made, the mirrors were a no brainer. Also getting a half size set made to hang in my office at work to ponder over in case I'm suddenly inspired. So what are you guys doing for the cowl ring? Using the aluminum one from your kit, or glassing one?

RE: Royal P-26 Group Build
Are you doing yours right off the Royal plans? I'm also building one from the plans, and am curious to watch how you are fitting the flaps. My plans are at the printer right now getting extra sets made, along with the mirror image of the fuse and wing. Haven't even started cutting yet, though mine will be cut with a scroll and band saws. I only wish I had access to a CNC cutter. Keep posting the pics! If you're doing a 1:1 from the Royal plans, I may be interested in buying a set of glass parts from you...if I can afford your time. The Fiberglass Specialties stuff is pricey and heavy. PM me if you'd be interested. BTW, what are you guys doing for a cowl ring?

RE: Best scale photo!
This thread was started by Mustang51
..and if you look at his first photo, post #1, the picture is so scale, it even shows how the pilot had to dislocate his hip to board his aircraft...or maybe he was just working out a cramp... and in post #2 the airplane was apparently parked by a Sequoia forest. But it's evidently...
a lot better because of the trees
Actually to compare NeilHutch, with his professional photographs, to mustangs51's amateur attempts is almost laughable. Beautiful shots all, and perhaps if Neil starts another thread for professional shots, more can be posted without "childish" ridicule.
ORIGINAL: 804
ORIGINAL: littlecrankshaf
ORIGINAL: 804 Gun owners shoot and hunt. That's not an activity? Hmm.
I am a gun owner and rarely shoot and haven't hunted in over 30 years...so no point trying to turn gun ownership into an activity per say.
ORIGINAL: 804 Your point was specifically that model airplane flyers are,as a group, inherently more careful than other people due to the investment in equipment. I say BS. If you want to modify your point to model airplane flying as an activity is statistically safer than, say, full scale flying, well, duh. And if model flying were completely unregulated, at the club level, as well as geographically (as in you can fly your 25 lb. 3-d model in your backyard in any city, any timeand don't tell me some wouldn't try it), then, well, draw your own conclusions.
I am not sure what your point is but model aviation is virtually unregulated now...and guys aren't flying 35% in there back yard often enough to cause concerns but be that as it may, flying large scale airplanes in our backyards here isn’t that uncommon and certainly hasn't caused any problems that I know of. But believe whatever makes you feel good.
What has your experience with guns got to do with millions of others'? It's a regulated activity. Model Airplanes virtually unregulated? I'm trying to think of places around here I could fly my 30% bird, or even a .46, for that matter. My backyard? Too small. My neighbors? With permission. Local school yard? Nope. Churchyard? Nope. County park? Nope. Public road? Nope. Anywhere in city limits? Nope. AMA club? Bingo! One would have to have a myopic view to believe one could fly such a thing in a backyard just anywhere. Texas is your world, but not THE world.
804...Run about 2 and half hours north and fly with me!! [:D] I've got a 500' x 75' E-W and a 200' x 75 N-S that you can use at my house anytime you are in the area. The guys from the club I used to belong to flew at two different school parking lots in the winter. When the club lost their primary field three years ago, they ended up at another members house, flying off the neighbors grass full scale strip. There's room anywhere you look, to put up anything you own, if you are responsible. If you're not personally responsible enough to manage this endeavor, I doubt you're responsible enough to think about joining any organization such as AMA in the first place. And 804, (and anyone else) the above statement was a generality, not a personal comment on you. I hope you understand that. I've been watching this thread since the beginning and have agreed with both camps at various times throughout. A bunch of great ideas have been thrown on the bench and beaten to death. It is a great method to get things changed...if it's done by people who can, and are willing to be a part of the change. FWIW, I was president of my Local Club last year. I've been a club "instructor" (club paid the $5 to have "Intro Pilot" on my card...where'd that money go?) for the last few years, etc, etc. If I need a label here I guess it can be "uninterested" at this point. I may rejoin in the future, but for now I'm a member of the dissenters.

RE: Has anybody built this plane
As suggested pay attention to the wing incidence. You may want to add in a little negative horizontal stab incidence as well. Mine is set at 0 and needed a large amount of down trim to get level flight. Makes it a little touchy, but it's a blast!! Mine flies spectacular with a Magnum 52 4s. Perfect power, and as far as it being heavy, mine came in at 5lb 4oz, balanced and RTF. Here's the maiden video. And the landings got better too. RE: Ebayers going nuts for old kits.
How hard is it to cut you own kit from plans?? Builders don't need kits, kits make it easier but if you do a search you can find the builders plans. I opened up one of my MAN plans catalog and right there in front of me is a 84 inch P-26A It's a Dan Santich design and {this is an old catalog} cost $35.00. Anyone needing smaller planes, they are out there too. I keep harping on this subject but builders better be making up templates of any and all kits they buy so when they are no longer made we can keep them alive. It's not hard and going to be well worth the trouble in the future!!
Got an issue # or link to it Gray Beard? I'd like to look it over. Scale or semi-scale? I built a Seacruiser II from plans last year, and kept all the patterns I made. I had a blast with that one, since the plans didn't have patterns for anything on it. Thoroughly enjoyable process. Built one for a club member last year, charged him for the balsa, and his 5 year old designed the covering scheme. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fihPOQBsF2Q That being said, the point wasn't about being able to cut and build from plans. A man with time, a saw, and dust mask can do that. It was a question of if builders or re-sellers were buying the old collector kits. You mashed the meaning of builder into the ability to slice balsa. Seriously though, I would like to see those plans.

RE: Ebayers going nuts for old kits.
Ever since Kaz's Taurus sold for a bazillion dollars, the market has gone through the roof... [;)] I watched a NIB Taurus kit sell for $600+ soon after that too. Just shook my head in amazement. Makes you wonder who is really buying these kits. My theory is mostly resellers and not builders. Most builders know what the value is, and unless it's got sentimental ties, just won't go that high. I missed out on a sale yesterday on a fantastic NIB Royal (just Royal, not R/M) P-26 Peashooter. I had my limit set at $350, which was looking good at $265 with 5 minutes left. I wasn't going higher, and walked away. When I checked back after the auction ended, it had bid 9 additional times and sold at $405. Man, I wanted to build that one. Just not enough to spend that much on it though. [:D] Hooray for the builders who do. Anyone have a P-26 for sale? [8|]

Yeah, I was flying at the house. Just decided that the big birds with retracts were better off at the home field. It's as smooth as a babies butt! This happened on about the third or fourth take off and landing of the day. Oldest daughter came out and needed some pics for her photography class and got some great ( [:@] ) action shots. You'll have to stop out sometime and fly. I'm open all winter, and I plow the driveway!! I don't start the new job until after Thanksgiving. Then I'll let you know!

RE: One engine out on takeoff...or How to repair a twin engine airplane
Yup, exactly the protocol to follow...provided that your not 10 foot off the ground 3 seconds after takeoff. [;)] This event was instantaneous, and basically amounted to a stall into the dead engine with zero aileron input. Too low, too quick, and in my opinion, completely unavoidable, at least for me. I was thrilled that the damage was so minimal. I've lost an engine on this airplane 2 other times (smaller, cheaper engines that came with the ARF...those familiar with the plane know which one I mean) and brought it back in every time. That's why I had the OS engines on board. It will fly all day at half throttle, whereas the little Evo...whoops, I mean the other engines struggled at full throttle throughout the flight. Believe me, with the OS's I can do a very un-scale takeoff with full flaps...think Doolittle and carriers. [:D]

RE: One engine out on takeoff...or How to repair a twin engine airplane
I built the stand. I got the idea from one that is (was, can't find it to link it to you) advertised here on the marketplace, and just drew it up from the pictures, and then made it sized to fit my applications. It is sized to fit from a .40 sized airplane to 50CC models (the biggest I fly-for now). I planned a mod in, when I drew it, to lengthen the arms and widen the base when I go bigger without cutting or rebuilding. It works great. If the stand goes back on the marketplace, I wholeheartedly endorse buying one, unless you can design and build one yourself. I won't post any direct pics or dimensions for mine, out of respect to the designer of the original. Thanks for the compliments.
