RE: 1st Annual Bakersfield D7 Spring Pattern Bash
Tony is correct about not being an issue. Used the YS160DZ for a couple of years, which is many ways is similar to the 140DZ and starting with a regular glow driver was never an issue. Wouldn’t recommend it with the 170 because you might throw a prop and spinner but did it anyway when in a pinch and the delayed driver was Tango Uniform. Mike

Actually Keith everyone there was hoping you and Al could have stayed. Cody and I had a great time and with maybe a single exception the entire pattern mafia from Eglin also had a great time. It is always a pleasure going to this contest, great CD, great food, great location. Mike

RE: Anybody built the Hinnant F-5 from plans?
Tomas.Crown, I has been over 38 years since I saw Billy fly the model. If memory serves me it is fast but then again they all were back then. The faster the better, suck the gear up and go like a Bat out of Hl, it was the norm. We needed the speed because the verticals under power would suffer without it. Not like today with the electrics or YS 170/5 powered 2 meter AMA/FAI birds. The construction is definitely not intermediate skill level. Here again, what we considered master was scale level building, beginner was Goldberg Falcon 56 stuff and what you're doing was intermediate. What did we know, there was really nothing that equaled ARFs of today and the one that was an ARF was a POS. Looking really good though, hope you enjoy the plane. Mike

RE: Phoenix 6 - Start # 2
Vince, Took the carb off and disassembled it down to individual parts. Inspected everything and ordered up a complete o-ring set just to be on the correct side given the age of the originals. While doing the re-assembly I paid particular attention to the working of the spray bar of the 7L; it has an trapezoidal cut crosswise so that as the adjustment, albeit minuscule is adjusted will allow an ever increasing or less amount of fuel when the throttle is at idle position. I also noticed the spray bar can be installed incorrectly to the unwary eye and have the appearance of being correct. However, when installed 180 degrees in error the fuel is completely cut off at idle and no amount of adjustment will work. I suspect it was installed 180 degrees out because the symptoms suggest. After getting everything back together and in the plane it was time to give it a good ground check-out; it work flawlessly and did so in the air as well. Mike

RE: Anybody built the Hinnant F-5 from plans?
BTW, Billy built it out of balsa as noted on the plans but after flying it he decided to make a mold. If I remember correctly he took the original balsa fuselage as the plug; it was rough but it provided a ready supply of fuselages should the need arise. Mike

Thomas.Crown; Billy Hinnant is a good friend of Mr. George Hill of Airborne Associates fame. George is still living but no longer in Northern VA. If you are interested in communicating with the designer/builder of the F5 George may be able to provide a number or email address if you contact him. His email is plannow4u@hotmail.com . Billy campaigned the F5 at many East Coast contests back in the seventies but never had any luck getting it kitted Good luck, Mike

RE: Phoenix 6 - Start # 2
Vince, It is done! Nostalgia at its very best; Phoenix 6 and Pro-Line radio; okay not exactly what was available in the early seventies but as close as possible considering the rare nature of some of the old equipment. Pro-Line was converted to 2.4 by a fellow Classic Pattern die-hard and member of Eglin Aeromodelers. The OS 61 is the one bought from you, the retracts are Robart spring-air type, RX is Futaba R617FS, on-board RX battery is NiMH 2000 MAH, 4 Airtronics mini digital metal gear servos for the surfaces, 2 - ailerons, 1 – rudder (pull-pull), 1 – elevators, 1 Corona micro digital metal gear for throttle, and 1 Corona micro digital for the air-valve. Have not weighed the entire setup yet but will Tuesday this coming week before the maiden flight. Hopefully everything will go okay with the plane reusable so trim flights and practice can begin in earnest then it is off to Andersonville, GA (Mac Hodges) for their Classic Pattern contest coming up May 19-20, 2012.

RE: OS 33GT Gasoline Engine for Pattern
Matt, Using avgas has benefits, for one the smell is not bad and for another the stuff lasts and lasts with no worries about residue that is so common with mogas. Make the trip and pay a little extra for the avgas and in the long haul you will not be disappointed. That is as long as it is available. Mike

RE: Phoenix 6 - Start # 2
Vince, Using Robart Spring-aire knockoffs but ordered up the Titanium legs from Central Hobbies and made my own nose-gear leg as the ones that came with the retracts are a bit on the heavy side. The Pass-port is sitting on the floor right behind me and it is going out tomorrow afternoon for a hop. Mostly using the Vanquish (e-power) for practice as the fuel plane requires so much clean up afterwards. Really like the way the Pass-port flies but trying to sell it if I can find an interested buyer. The fuel planes are sort of taking a back seat to the new crop of electric pattern planes but there is nothing like that YS for powering through strong winds. Mike

Hey Vince, Got the first three colors on the P-6; borrowed your colors but adding yellow and black checkerboard to the bottom of wing and stab. Still working through the canopy but will probably just outline in black with the front glare shield black also; just a thought. Mike

Vince, Still working towards making Apopka in Dec., hope to see you there. Phoenix is looking oh so good. Ordered up a replacement Phoenix VI wing core set from Eureka as the original set will not vac bag very well; round leading edge and the schucks don't work well with bagging. When the new cores get here I'll be hard at it to get it done so that a couple of flights can be accomplished prior to Apopka. Mike
