RE: MOKI RADIAL Care and Maintenence
I'm using Red Line in my Moki, but I'm still on my first can of gas. I've used it in my other gas engines for quite some time... at 50:1, it will leave some residue on the bottom of your plane. I used it for about 2 years in a DA170.. when I sold the motor, the cylinder walls and piston top were almost as clean as when it was new. I've heard other people say that switching to Red Line has cleaned up components that were previously carboned up. I don't know that there's a magic "snake oil" that will cure everything... but I'm happy with the product.

RE: Why don't we have more 4 stroke gassers?
You can get conversion kits for some Saito 4-stroke kits... up to the 300-twin. I used to have a pair of FG-14 motors on a Baron model... the motors required more ongoing tweeking than I wanted to deal with, so I sold the plane and haven't considered another 4-stroke gasser yet. I would like one of those big 4-stroke radials, but I don't really have anything that would be a good fit for one.

I'd sell the whole thing for $500 if someone would come get it out of my basement. Not that there's anything wrong with it, but most of what's in it wouldn't go into anything else that I would want to fly.

RE: New: Beech Baron and Duchess arf
I have not.... for some reason, when I fill up the car go head to the field, this is not a plane that I'm thinking about. I'm sure the e-flite gear is strong enough... the gear plates in the plane take most of the load, the retracts just raise and lower the gear. the only question from a stress standpoint would be on the nosegear... since it folds towards the tail. But, since it's tilted forward, I think that plate absorbs a good deal there too. I'm trying to decide what to do with this plane. I should take it to the field, it's all ready, but for some reason, it's turning into a hangar queen.

RE: Introducing the new 50cc Ultimate 20-300
My first giant scale was the AW 50cc Extra... probably one of the straightest flying planes I've ever owned. I've also had the 50cc pitts, and the 90-120 Yak... all great flyers. I guess my biggest problem all along was CG. Now that this appears to be sorted out, it's turning out to be a pretty good flying plane. I guess I need a dozen or so more flights to get the mixing dialed in, then we can have some real fun with it. This thing has had a pretty rough life so far.. Chasing CG issues so bad that it was almost impossible to fly Radio lockout in an inverted flat spin Dead battery while flying... another dead stick Out of all of those, the lockout was the worst, breaking the motor box off right at the firewall. That was a lot easier to rebuild than I originally thought, and I think what I have now will be there long after the rest of the wood rots.... plenty of epoxy and CF cloth for added strength. Today, not even an engine burp, plenty of power with the DA60, and finally getting the control surfaces dialed in... a lot better day of flying than the last several have been.

RE: Introducing the new 50cc Ultimate 20-300
OK.. I think I finally got this thing tamed today... I went back to A123 batteries just because I like them, and mounted all 3 of them right on the firewall of the fuse. It's just a tad nose heavy at the 1 1/2 inch marks, but it flies perfect. My first takeoff almost planted the prop in the runway (I still had the elevator trim in it from being more tail heavy). I also dialed the ailerons down a little, added some rudder/elevator and rudder/aileron mixing... flies pretty well now on low and medium rates, I haven't even tried hi rates yet. On low rates, I've got the ailerons down to about 14% of the travel throw, and elevator is at about 20%... but that seems to work well for me. I think I'll keep it.

RE: Introducing the new 50cc Ultimate 20-300
You can't go wrong with the DA... I've owned every size between 50cc and 150cc, they've all been great. You'll need to cut a large center hole in your firewall for this motor also... just cut it the same size as the inside of the wooden spacers. You'll still need to do a little carving out for the throttle and choke ball links, but that's minor. I also had to dremel the metal housing around the carb just a little in order for the throttle linkage to easily go from idle to full... but again, that's a 30 second fix.

Sounds like these AW Ultimates have had their run of bad luck on the north side of Atlanta.... hopefully there's better skies ahead for both of us! I've had lots of AW planes, including the 50cc Python... loved them all. This one has been a handful on many levels, but I think I've about got it tamed now... time for some fun!

RE: Introducing the new 50cc Ultimate 20-300
I put the 60 on mine... the previous owner had a DA50 on it. Using the original mounting holes and DA provided spacers, it bolted up absolutely perfect. I did need to get some 1/16 ply and make one more spacer. I glued everything up using West Systems Epoxy and CF cloth to reinforce... You'll want to add a choke servo. There's a housing around the carb on the 60 that makes it a challenge to put a choke rod on the arm and run it out the front. A few people have done it, but for simplicity and only adding a few ounces, the choke servo was the way to go for me. Lots of power with a CF 23x10 prop. You'll also have a decision to make about how you adjust the carb. On the 60, the needles are pointing straight up, and actually come through the wooden spacers that DA provides. If you want the abiltiy to adjust the carb without taking the cowl off, you'll need to cut a hole in the top of your cowl... it's a shame to mess up such a nice cowl with a hole, but it's almost a must-have. On my first cowl, I installed a large sized fuel dot. I haven't done anything on the second cowl yet... we'll see how the motor runs over time.

RE: New: Beech Baron and Duchess arf
I bought the large size electric retracts from E-Flite. The main gears are a direct drop-in. For the nose gear, the retracts have a 4mm main shaft hole, but the struts have a 5mm hole. I tried at first to take a 5mm metal shaft and shave a mm off of half of it with a flat file and my drill press... it worked OK, but the shaft wound up more tapered than straight. Then, I decided to use the drill press again and expand the 4mm hole in the retracts out to 5mm... worked like a champ! I still haven't flown it yet, but It's ready. I still need to finish the gear doors, but I'll probably get a few flights on it first to see how it flies.

RE: Introducing the new 50cc Ultimate 20-300
I don't mean moving the gear... I was talking about turning the gear around. The "right" way to mount them is for the gear to lean towards the back of the plane. If you just reverse the landing gear to lean towards the front of the plane (you'd also need to reverse the wheel pants), then it would have little if any effect on the flying CG, but it would move more "rolling" weight to the back wheels.... keeping the tail down. I looked at my plane last night, and it appears that the bolt holes would like up just fine if you flipped the gear over, but I haven't actually tried it.

I haven't looked..... but could you mount the gear on backwards, so that they extended forward? I know a lot of people did this with the Hangar 9 Ultimate for the same reason.

what memory? I was more than a little suprized when I checked the CG from the center of the wing. Still no reason that it should be any different out on the wingtips. Hey, if the thing settles down and flies right next time, I'll just be glad to have the problems behind me.

It uses the same jig as the DA50... or, if you have a drill press and can hold the prop steady enough, just use the thrust washer for the prop as your guide.

RE: Introducing the new 50cc Ultimate 20-300
I did notice one thing when I was CG-ing my plane after recent repairs. Maybe it's a biplane thing, I don't know, but it's the first time I've run into it..... the AW manual calls for the CG to be 1 1/2 inches behind the LE of the upper wing. I measured, marked the location on each wingtip, checked the CG (all good) and took off..... My first 4 or 5 flights on this plane were so out of control that I was always chasing control problems. Eventually, I made a few hardware changes, lots of trim changes, and thought it was better. I lost the radio on the next flight, and it crashed. After the repairs, I came to the CG part at the end of the process. Using the marks on my wingtips, it was showing to be just a little tail heavy (my preference). When I extended a string between those two points, marked the bottom of the wing, and checked the CG from the center of the wing... it was WAY tail heavy. I think that was the root of the problems I was chasing all along. I had to move both batteries up to my motor box to get everything evened out. Did anyone else notice a difference between holding the wingtips and supporting the center of the wing? I wouldn't think it would make any difference, but maybe the cabane design has some effect?

RE: Introducing the new 50cc Ultimate 20-300
One easy (sort of) way to weigh it is to get your bathroom scales. Then, get 2 stacks of newspapers or magazines or something like that... and make the stacks exactly the same height as your bathroom scales. Then, just rotate the scales around each of the three wheels, add up the numbers, and there you go. You can also use this method to mathematically determine your CG... but you have to do it with your fuse perfectly leveled... put the scales under one front wheel, and equal stack of somethign under the other front wheel, and a high enough stack under the tailwheel to make the fuse level... then determine the percentage of weight on each wheel, etc.. etc.. I think it's a little too involved for a 50cc plane, but if you have a larger plane and don't have someone to help grab a wing, it's a good way to calculate. It's the same method that the air freight companies and military use every day to calculate weight distribution.
