Hangar 9 P-51 PTS question
I just got a Hangar 9 P-51 PTS. On assembly I found a bag with the wing mounting screws and 4 small blocks of balsa on the wing tube. Anyone know what those balsa block are for? They are about .5x.5x1 inch.

RE: 40/45 size Classics
I never understood why Global stopped the Avance 40 ARF. Or why someone didn't come out with a kit of it. I remember when I started looking at Pattern abotu 12 years ago there really wasn't anything in the 40 size.
ORIGINAL: 1QwkSport2.5r Neil - It's pretty hard to be serious about anything when people don't read the first post completely. In my first post, I was sarcastic about the forum's search function. Anyone who's anyone here knows it never works the way we'd like it to. I was admittedly sarcastic in the 5th post, yup... You got me on that one. But if everyone read the first post, we wouldn't be having this discussion that's not on the subject of the thread. So... If noone can help with what the original post was about, don't bother replying to this thread anymore. I am probably better off to buy some supplies and try the experiment for myself.
Actually your first post has nothing to do with your subject - that is what others are talking about. Chill and realize that you led people off track from what you really wanted to discuss.
ORIGINAL: Bozarth
ORIGINAL: essyou35 ?? G force doesn't make you maintain level flight. As for the rest of your post no idea what you are saying.
Oh, but it does. A tad shy of 2 g's at 60 degrees of bank and you will descend. A tad too much pull (more than 2 g's) at 60 degrees and you will climb. Trigonometry at it's finest. Kurt
It all depends on the angle of thrust. One can make a "level turn" at 90 degress bank with enough up thrust. And depending on how hard you pull the elevator you can get a 2G turn or a 9G turn. It's all about the forces on the aircraft - ALL OF THEM.

RE: No one knows about rigging?
BTW, the best thing I've found for rigging are plain old electrical lugs. Radio Shack, before it went teenie bopper, carried some cheap ones. For my boat I used picture hanging wire but that might be a little heavy. Then again, this plane isn't that small - it's just 5 inches from being IMAA legal. I hope your 70 4-stroke works well. That's kind of at the bottom end of engines for this plane. Then again, a 70 today is more powerful than a 70 in 1981 when these were built. And she is a trainer so you don't have to have unlimited verticle.

RE: No one knows about rigging?
ORIGINAL: stevegauth30@comcast.net I appologize. I didn't mean to get any one worked up, I just like the way they look. The model is a Champion aero models co., stampe sv4. .60 size plane. The kit didn't come with any parts list or manual. All that I have is the original tower hobbies receipt, and the picture on the box. I know that the plane doesn't need them, I just like the look. The only thing I was asking was for some ideas.
I have the same kit and am nearly complete with it. I'm not using any rigging but I am adding the struts between the wings. There are so many pictures and web sites dedicated to this plane you just need to do a search on the web. BTW, I am using a Tacon 60 electric motor. Kind of anxious to see how she flies. I also covered her with Solartex and WorldTex "fabrics". Lastly, how is the build going. Mine was a bear - getting a new set of drawings from AMA helped because a lot on the original drawing was faded.

RE: Military colors only at warbird meets?
I gotta say tho that things like the flat P-51s, and other such nonsense are also NOT warbirds. I mean it doesn't have to be scale but at least it should be something like sport scale.

RE: Military colors only at warbird meets?
Does "designed as a military plane" qualify it as a warbird? I used to work at Boeing a long time ago and learned that the 747 was the FIRST large airplane designed totally as a commercial plane. Does that mean 727's should qualify as a warbird? How about a Lockhead Super Connie since it was also a Air Force cargo airplane. Sorry, I agree with the event managers - an old P-51, P-38, T-6, etc that is no longer in military colors is no longer a warbird. But a Grasshopper, an military trainer, and even the DC-10 based tankers are. Fighter pilots still need to be trained and ferried to the war zone.

RE: Since getting into this hobby, whats been the biggest leap forward you have seen in this hobby?
In the real helicopter world people fooled around with helicopters for more than 40 years until a power source was available that would actually vertically lift the engine itself, much less the weight of the aircraft. And with RC electric motors, brushless or brushed, the advances in batteries is what made all the difference in dreams versus realities. 20 years ago the thought of a helicopter with a 60 size electric motor was unrealistic at best. And not even in the poll are the advances in microminiturization of computers. 2.4 GHz Spread Specturm for RC would not be possible without it. Nor would high current ESCs for brushless motors. For that matter much of the advance in LiPo battery technology comes from cheap microprocessor controlled battery chargers that sense indivual cell characteristics.
ORIGINAL: tomhugill Jeff my HSS bit doesnt even scratch it. I ive tried cutting a groove for a slot head screwdriver and I dont think thats going to work, bolts too small and slot is too big. What sorta drill bit am I going to need to get this sucker out?
Try a titanium or diamond tip bit. Use a tiny one for a pilot hole. Once you have a pilot hole you should be able to drill succesively large holes until you can get in an easy-out. The vibration and heat generated during this process will help loosen the locktite. But even still add more heat. This is expensive an time consuming but consider what it would cost to replace the entire unit.

If I recall correctly the Giles 202 wingspan to length ratio is very close to the typical classic pattern plane of 1:1. It is the main one I have looked at for doing the same thing you are.

RE: Dope cover question
Sounds like a lot of work. Solartex/Worldtex works great. Looks and feels like fabric but shrinks better than Monokote. And it comes in a lot of colors and can be layered on top of other Solartex//Worldtex for trim.

RE: Newbie Servo Questions.
I recommend you always keep your trainer. For one thing it gives you something to go back to if you crash and are a little apprehensive when you go up again. And it gives you something to start each season with if you live in a place with a small flying season. With that said then you will keep the servos for it in it. So gett low cost analog servos - digital are a waste of money in a trainer. Plain old standard cheapy servos - that's what you need. But do make sure they have a connector that fits your receiver. It is frustrating as all get out if you buy servos with Futaba J connectors but you receiver uses Airtronics connectors. You can use them if you know how but it's a pain.

RE: Am I the only one who flies pattern with no mixes in their plane ??
No one should be allowed to use brushless motors either, right? After all they are esentially controlled by a computer pulsing the motor at calculated intervals. And what about electronic fuel injection - we shoul all ues the old mechnical fuel injection. Computers are not our enemy - arrogant people using them stupidly are. And (safety being paramount) that includes those FPV people who flight out of sight.

RE: Who else has failed on their first build?
First, I would like to appologize to the OP. I did not intend to degrade him. I stand behind the rest of my comment but I certainly could have said it without comment on cost. I am truly sorry. Second, your subject says you think you failed on your first attempt at building. I don't think you failed. I don't think you built your aiprlane wrong, I think you built the wrong airplane. If my memory serves me correctly that plane has about a 19 inch wingspan. That would give a wing loading of under 2 oz per sqft. And that is a tenth of the wing loading of a typical trainer. Plus their web sites says you will use .5oz of glue so that means you have 1 ounce left for wood, covering, electronics, motor and battery. You would have no structural strenght at all in the fuse or wings. Very minor build errors like slightly warped wing and aft CG would translate into huge problems in flying. Again I am sorry - I too look at low cost items and am even considering one balsa ARF Cub from Hobby King that is only around $30 but it weighs 30oz with around a 46 inch wingspan. Even so I am very concerned about the low wing loading.

RE: Twin .61 prop question
Actually, Major Tom, the engine will probably start and run if he tries to turn it the wrong way. It just won't get anywhere near the rpm or power needed. But running them both correctly with a pusher prop on one might spin his plane fast enough to generate lift [:D]

RE: glow to electric conversion
The Tacon Bigfoot 110 is only $51.50 at Hobbypartz today. I like Tacon's numbering system because it relates directly to a standard fuel engine. Most numbering you see is the size of the motor in mm and that is just stupid.

RE: Goldberg Tiger Club
I had a Tiger 60 - you can see a picture on my page. I did the trim to make it look like the box. My wife made polymer clay pencil toppers of busts and one of them looked like an "Alabama Bar Hag" so I put her naked as a pilot. For a long time that plane was the only one I never crashed and she became my favorite, and most flown, plane. I also did a lot of experimenting with my Hitec computer radio and dual aileron servos to get her to do axial rolls. And I did adjustments to tweak the flying characteristics for precision aerobatics.
