RE: 1/5 Pepsi Chipmunk - Build
Thanks Ari, I do like the fact that slow speed and stalls are more stable. I hope it's not adverse inverted or KE. Thank you for your input. I look forward to your build on the Cessna. Rick[:)]

RE: 1/5 Pepsi Chipmunk - Build
Wow! definitely more than a start on the Cessna! The fuse looks like quite a challenge to build. You like to build! What engs are you going to use? I assume you have the wing done or started as well. How will you finish the fuse (covering)? The reason I asked about the washout on the Chipmunk is I would like it to be more neutral in different attitudes. Since you have had two, what would be your opinion on washout? There aren't any tabs on the Ohio Chippy (separate jig used in build). Do you do more scale or aerobatic flying with the Chipmunks? Maybe someone in Australia would be interested in Apache??? I'm sure Mike would like someone he could trust to take his business. I asked him about shipping (Chipmunk) to the US some years ago and it was very expensive. Let me know your thoughts on the washout and keep the photos coming on the Cessna and the Chippy when you have time.[:D]

RE: 1/5 Pepsi Chipmunk - Build
Thanks for the photos of the last plane, I enjoyed them. That's a great looking plane and I like the Pepsi sceme. Since your familiar with the MVVS30 I imagine you will be quite happy with that. Sounds like your ready to start the Cessna and we will have to be really patient to see the Chipmunk covered. The Ohio RC Chipmunk has a building jig for washout in the wing tips. Does the Apache have washout built in also? I am wondering how the washout might effect the inverted or aerobatic performance? and if I should leave it out?[8D]

Don't think I've ever gotten 1000 flights on a plane! Your doing something right and must enjoy flying that plane. Apalsson, can you get the Chippy covered before you start the next plane? Would like to see some photos of the covering. What eng do you have for it?[8D]

Sounds good so far, especially the easy start. What prop are you going with next or are you going to continue with the 18x8 prop for awhile? Looks like a really nice fit within the cowl on the Bearcat. Good looking plane, how much does it weight? How about a flight report when you maiden it? Rick[8D]

Ghoffman, It looks like the Tech Aero IBEC has had very good reviews on FG and I think I will give them a try. Thanks. Saving weight on the 30 to 40cc planes helps. I think hsukaria makes a good point, that we are looking for more power and the manufacturers are stepping up. If the market is there, they will build them. Rick

RE: Where are the 40cc Gas Engines???
I've heard A123's (6.6v) are ok with DA ignitions but don't think DA has stated that. I'm not familiar with the Tech-Aero IBEC but sounds like it's reliable and I'd like to look at that. I have been using the Wike IBEF on two 40cc planes with no issues. They are adjustable from at least 5-6 volts. If we can get away from the regulators it will be one less thing that can go wrong. I hope DA will step up the voltage on their ign modules.

RE: Where are the 40cc Gas Engines???
ghoffman, good news on the DLE 35 and DA 35 coming out soon. These are going to be good possibilities and they both have a good reputation and DA has excellent customer service and warranty coverage. Two of my 40cc size planes are built and have side carb and exhaust engs in them. I will check the dimensions on the rear carbs and exhaust engs and if they will fit, I think that will be better (more clearance). I appreciate all the good input. I will look for DLE 35 specs and reviews and see if I can get more info on the DA 35 coming out. Rick

RE: Where are the 40cc Gas Engines???
Ghoffman, Will the Mintor 38 allow for 3D on a 14-15lb plane? Also, I think I would like the rear carb for better clearance. I will look into the Mintor as well. It has to have a reliable reputation so I can spend more time flying than troubleshooting! Don't want the reliable Zenoah 38 as it is heavy, would prefer the lighter small case engines. Jaka, I have heard good things about the MVVS engs. I will look into the specs on it. I'm doing some comparison research right now. I saw a new PTE 36cc advertised (looks good), light weight, rear carb, supposed to be good quality. I will look at reviews after comparing specs. I have two 14-15lb and one 12.5lb planes that I would like to be able to interchange engs for convenience (mounting), gas mix, tune ability, parts needed etc if possible so I don't have to have to many different engines, rather than a different eng for each plane. I may get two or three (same) engs for these size planes. I have a couple 50cc planes that I already have 50cc engs for. I appreciate the input, so feel free to give opinions. MTK, I'll let you know if interested in your engine. Thanks, Rick

TripleDeucer, Thunderbolt47 got the drop on my answer and (KE) knife edged in and gave it to you! LOL's. I will do the same as you and make templates of the parts I have as well. What repairs do you need to do to get yours back in the air? You can still buy the kits/ wing kits/ short kits etc from Precision Cut Kits is the new source. They are lazer cut and more expensive than the original kits. The canopy's and cowls are still available from the original producer in Canada. Good to have an extra like you stated. Thunderbolt47 - Have you finished your OV-10? Any photos? When will you get back on the GIANT Chipmunk? Would like any update or photos as that is one impressive airplane! [;)]

Hey Mark, That sounds like a good idea to me as well. I started doing that and now have all the rib templates done. I'll look for the TE & LE stock soon. Sorry to hear about yours, will you be rebuilding soon? Did you have the washout recommended (by provided jigs in kit)? And I assume the 6" dihedral? How was KE and inverted flying? RE: Dihedral for Ohio Super Chipmunk
Kelly, OMG! That is so awesome. And your 1st scratch build!? what a challenge, it looks like you have scratch built many planes. I would really like to see it up close. Thanks for the build thread! I'm looking forward to following the build and flight report. Art taking out 1/2 the dihedral makes sense if you want to do more advance aerobatics. Because it was built as a trainer it made it very stable with more dihedral. I watched the video you referenced and it was great to watch, I noticed the wing is fairly flat. I was wondering if someone else had the same idea to lessen the dihedral for better aerobatic handling. So, I just need to decide how much. If Art chose 1/2, that should be a good start. Thank you for the info and input. I'll look forward to your build progress. Rick

I will be building a Ohio R/C Chipmunk soon and want to know if anyone has decreased the 6" dihedral and the results. Anyone build the Apache with 4" dihedral? I would like to know what coupling issues and inverted flight stability it has with 6 or 4 inches. Or, if less dihedral how it flew in respect to coupling or inverted flight. I know, why don't I just get an extra, edge or yak! I like the chipmunks! Rick[;)]

RE: Just finished building my Super Kraft Cap Sport
Yes, depending on your flying style and eyesight, it is easy to distinguish the top from the bottom. Try flying as is and if you have difficulty, put a different colored stripe (cord wise) on the bottom. Very good quality and nice and easy plane to fly. The older model is yellow on top, blue on the bottom. The newer model is red/white and blue on the top and white with blue stripes on the bottom and has an airfoil tail. go for it. [:)]

As far as I know, the major brands (Hitec, JR, Futaba) can handle 6v batteries. Check with the instructions to be sure and it will tell you. Or check online (the product information) before buying. One question is, do you really need 6 volts? as it does add some weight. Happy flying.[:D]
