RE: Do I have phenolitic material?
Some guys build control horns, etc. from that material, I believe. Back in the old radio age ( real radio..not r/c ) that board was the main insulator material used. Unfortunately, I remember it well. Rich

RE: Budget Taylorcraft 450
I can't help re the motors etc. but...if you are going to be in this hobby for any time at all, soldering soon becomes a necessary evil. Paying extra $$ for a motor with the "correct " connectors is avoiding the unavoidable. Might as well buy an inexpensive soldering iron; some 60-40 solder and experiment until you get it right. Soon, you will be saving money by doing your own soldering and you can become consistent in the various connectors that YOU choose..not what the manufacturer's have chosen. regards, Rich

RE: Considering giving nitro flight a try.....any advice?
The 45 minutes shouldn't be that much of a bother. You may find another, better, deal from club members on a glow trainer...too. Once I really got started flying glow, I put my foamies up. That doesn't mean that I won't use them again...but..for now...the glow planes are more fun for me. I understand all of the good features of foamies..but there is nothing like the power and sound of a nice glow engine. Also, there is nothing like being able to be fly again....in just a few minutes...after simply refueling your plane. Both styles have their place. I'll bet that you will fly your foamies when you have a short time-frame...and will drive to the bigger field when you need a glow fix. Of course, given your limited budget...you may find that having to join the AMA and pay club initiation fees & dues...may make the club costs prohibitive for you now. regards, Rich

RE: sim or program cable??
I had numerous problems trying to get FMS to run my TX on my Vista equipped computer. The first thing that I learned was that, for my setup, I had to use a MONO plug, not a Stereo plug. A number of other programming things had to be done to get FMS to run, including installing Smart-pro-PO Plus; and a PORT simulation program. I'd try the cable solution first, though. Rich

JR xf 622 placement of spring?
Howdy, I bought a used JR XF622 along with a plane. The gentleman that I bought it from, at the very last minute..dropped the TX. We renegotiated the price, since the Gimbal was floating around inside of TX. He gave me the TX to mess with, just in case I could fix it. Well, I seem to have fixed it. Everything is functioning "normally" now. But...when the unit is turned over and the back is removed..... the Aileron/elevator Gimbal control has a spring that connects to a cross bar on the left hand side of the Gimbal. I have everything connected and working fine...however I cannot see WHERE the lower end of the spring connects. It is obvious that the upper ( closest to me ) end of the spring connects to the floating bar. But..where it goes I cannot tell. The spring was floating around inside when I opened it up. I can see the function...it returns the ail/elev Gimbal back to center. Has anyone torn one of these apart and can tell me what to look for as to the lower anchoring part of the spring? Thanks, Rich

RE: Newbie questions
Hmmmm sandbags for holding planes down...long ones work well. NOW, I finally have a use for all of the SINGLE; ALONE; AND FORLORN.. socks in my drawer. Good thing I save all of that stuff. I guess I better put the sand in a baggie before I put it into the sock, though. I wouldn't want to leave a trail of sand everywhere I went. Thanks for the idea. regards, Rich

RE: HZ Super Cub , add flaps in 5 minutes
The "flaps" look very much like some dry wall corners I've seen at Home Depot and Lowe's. How are they actuated? Do they link to the elevator servo? Is there an additional servo involved? Any info would be appreciated. thanks Rich

RE: OS tuning
Every engine I get... I automatically download the correct manual onto my computer. That way, even when ....(not if ).... I lose the original manual, I can look things up and print out a page or two if I need it. The manual will tell you the correct needle setting for initial startup. OS has their manuals on their web pages. regards, Rich p.s. there is difference between the start-up needle setting for the OS (FX) and the OS (AX) engines. One of my club "experts" spent twenty minutes trying to start my AX using the older engine's starting position. The manual solved the problem. RG

RE: RC + Photography
Some nice shots there. When I first started at my club(s) I spent far more time taking pictures than flying. That may have been because my picture taking abilities far exceeded my flying ability. I produced a ton of 4 x 6 pix ( for about 20 cents each at Wal-mart) and posted them on the club bulletin boards. The guys seemed to like having their planes featured. One small hint on the shot with the orange fence in the way. You can press your lens right up against plastic and metal fences and get a full (( or nearly full) frame shot. I've shot lots of baseball games with my lens squeezed tight to the chain-link fence. It is a good reason to use a filter of some kind over your expensive lens, of course. I shoot a Sony A350 with a Sony 28-250 lens. Seems to cover all my needs. No lens to change..hardly ever. The P-47 ( six foot wing-span) shot shown below was published in a local free paper. regards, Rich Some of my photos can be seen at http://www.flickr.com/photos/21167841@N00/ [image]http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2631/3938770165_5afc23c72d.jpg[/image]

RE: spadstick build videos
Andy, a number of things slow/stop people from trying this hobby. When you add up the cost of a 4 channel new radio; receiver; an engine; and THEN the $150.00 or so cost of a plane that crumbles in one crash.... ...lots of guys just don't want to spend the bucks to "see" if they like the hobby. With new cheap ARFS; OR...cheap new radios and receivers...and a reasonably priced engine or electric motor/esc/batttery...add in a SPAD .... there are a lot fewer $$$$$ issues in the excuse pile.. I got suckered in with a $75.00 cost for two almost non-flying electrics...but..now I can proudly say I've spent more in the last two years than I did on my last two boating years... Ha ha Keep 'em coming. regards, Rich

RE: Softening Epoxy on wood?
I've removed a lot of hot melt glue; epoxy and foam by using a "box cutter" type of knife and heating the blade up with my heat gun. In a pinch, you could heat the blade with a propane torch or a hair-drier. regards, Rich

RE: fms sinulator
WOW...You've done it! I now have full TX control and FMS runs fine. I purchased the mono cable. and that obviously was a big step forward. I don't know where I got the idea that a stereo cable was the right one??? I then did a complete re-install of SmartProPoPlus. However, it seems that when SmartProPoPlus installs itself..it creates its own folder. I never saw a screen that gave me an opportunity to tell SmartProPoPlus to be saved to the FMS folder... Once I realized that....I deleted my FMS folder...renamed the SmartProPoPlus folder to FMS..reinstalled FMS to that newly renamed folder....re-calibrated everything and suddenly I am flying. I cannot tell you ALL how pleased I am that this now finally works. I have not been using a simulator and I know this will help me immensely. Thanks again.... regards, Rich

RE: fms sinulator
Thanks, I did as the site suggested.. Deleted my old copy of FMS; Downloaded the new FMS 7.0 program; downloaded and extracted the .dll file and put it into the windows system32 folder as instructed. I verified that it was, in fact, now in that folder. The FMS program was automatically placed in the windows program folders. Unfortunately, I seem to be no further along now than I was before. The program works just fine with keyboard input only. It just doesn't recognize my Spektrum TX (DX5e) at all. I am using the recommended stereo cord, plugged into the microphone jack of my computer ( which recognizes it as a microphone). Previously, the prior FMS program did recognize a joystick, but I don't have that joystick available for another week. It is 120 miles away. Some where I read that I might be having "com port" problems. I tried all the 4 available com ports shown on the FMS screen. No change. I downloaded a "virtual port maker program "(HW Virtual serial port) but it only produces an error message of "class not recognized" when I attempt to run it. Candidly, I don't seem to get this thing to work. Recognize that I am not a complete computer newbie. I've created a web site for my village; I ran a member's group for a class of boats..... but ... I cannot get FMS to run on my VISTA computer. I did read that some video cards can't run it..but that doesn't make any sense as a problem, since the program does run...with keyboard control....only. Any other ideas, thoughts or suggestions appreciated. thanks, Rich

RE: Mounting a OS .46 AX inverted
The .46 OS AX is a great engine. Even a newbie like me can make it run consistently. The only hitch that I ran into was the senior guys on our field trying to tune it like a FX. They were using 4 to 5 turns out to start. The manual says something like 1 1/2 turns or so if I remember correctly. I haven't had to touch it much in the 6 months or so that I have been running it. A tach is a great tool for those of us without "tuned ears" as of yet. Read the manual and follow it. Rich
