ORIGINAL: wade7575 I'm looking to get an External LVC for my Boat,I'm running a Seaking 180 Amp ESC and the LVC kick's in all the time,my pack's are fine and are Thuder Power and Turngiy's and have the highest C that each one make's. I seen Novak make's one but it just buzz's or something like then you need to come back to shore and the problem is I'll never hear it,I found this one but they are set at 3.0 Volt's Per-cell and I would like to find something with a CutOff set at 3.2 Volt's Per-Cell. RE: Safe voltage to fly
Rest assured that this is not going back in an airplane. The thing that bothers me is that there is not a good way to test extension cables and there are some that have been in my planes for five years and could be developing the same problem that this one has. Mo Lata Jerry As said above all cables are placed under max load (1 to 2Amps)an voltage loss in cables measured, also pulling on all connection under load is monitored. You could test all cables in minutes once the jig is setup. Would will find the bad crimp or loose connecter the second it was plugged in. Rich

RE: LiPo rookie
I believe the problem started when you fully charged your pack a left it that way. Most packs swell if left at full charge. I charge my starter LiPO at storage charge 3.8V to 3.9 volts max. for two years now an the 3 cell starts my OS 72 FS just fine. Rich

RE: Is This a Good Test?
ORIGINAL: Goldenduff Hello, a little off topic but I hope to get a simple answer so we can get back the Op, just taking advantage of the minds assembled.... Basically I need to add weight for balance. I have a futaba R617fs. Can I put ''y'' leads on every servo and connect say 4 Nicd to the receiver? Am I correct in thinking the voltage will stay the same? Could I use different voltage packs and chemistries? It's a bit messy but need to add weight so might as well be batteries! Cheers
Yes to Futaba R617 if you look thur the plastic you can see the center red is all bussed "connected together" No to different pack chemistries just a very bad settup to chargeing etc. and never different voltages. It's been discussed over an over about packs in parallel we seem to agree on NI xx chemistries same aged packs identical as possable. Just put in open slot in rec. or Y as you are asking is ok, always two is better than one. A sujjestion maybe to have some 5 cell sub "C's" made up then canfly forever[:)] best weight is batteries Rich

RE: Is This a Good Test?
I don,t use LIxx as any source in plane's but motor so no experience other than that. I work as electronic instructor, an ex engner [:D] so got tons of diodes i use all the time. MR751 series is great 6 amp. So many to chose from PM me just let me know the setup an i'll tell u what need then go to jamco an get one. I do it to isolate two packs an use MR751 all the time 6 cell NiMH can charge either pack no separate switches. But have since gone to separate switches with built in charge plugs an no diodes with 4 cell using eneloops too. In your case it is a close call using Lixx in parallel does have this concern that NiXX does not have. If it was me an they were in parallel for long time no isolation switches yea I would use diodes because no reason not too. Rich

RE: Is This a Good Test?
ORIGINAL: guver I think I can easily do this with some similar cells. I'm no EE , so is the actual voltage important or would it be ok to just match the voltage difference? In otherwords could I use 20 volts and 23 volts with some similar cells (30C means fairly low IR) I'd only be able to get you the first inrush of current reading , but not any readings much over a few seconds and won't be able time it in any way because I will not allow any of my cells to go much overcharged. Speaking of that overcharge: If we had a 7 volt 2s hooked to a 3.5 volt 1s of identical capacity would the voltage settle to an exact average of 5.25 volts?
No the 2S is a voltage source Ri in milli ohms it will dump into the overcharge at a non repeatable rate depentent on seperator failure rate then gasses will build to ??? again each battery will fail different i would guess each test would have different out come an each manufacture battery would change out come greatly. a) the 1 cell outgass an opens b) the 1 cell shorts then 6V dumps until it overheats or goes dead But we are discussing what if a cell shorts or tabs short or wires short a failure is possable so !!!! even if 1 in 1000 odds still ?

RE: Is This a Good Test?
ORIGINAL: Flyfast1
ORIGINAL: guver For anyone to give an estimate or guess the current would you please share at least the size/capacity of the cells? Thanks. Some EE can probably figure this out on paper if the capacity and resistance of the circuit and voltage differential is known. I'll bet one can guess pretty close. I'd be willing to do it with a pair of lipos. That's as close as I can get. [;)] What is the capacity and size and brand of cells? What is the length and size of leads? How many connectors? type? ect?
Hi Guver, I am thinking of using the Zippy Flightmax 2100mAh 2S1P 30C LiFePo4 Pack from Hobby King (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__21121__ZIPPY_Flightmax_2100mAh_2S1P_30C_LiFePo4_Pack_USA_Warehouse_.html), since they seem to have similar specifications to the Hangtime hobbies LiFe packs that I have and are only $9.52 each. For leads and connectors I would use 18'' 22 gauge servo extension wires and a heavy duty ultra switch from Hangtime Hobbies, since that's what I plan to use in my plane. -Ed B.
?? What iam i missing ?? 2 cells in series is app. 6.6 volts one cell charges to 3.6 v put 6.6 into 3.6 what do you think will happen it will draw what ever current it wants to in overcharge, i would not use this battery again after this test [:@] BTW iam the guy saying if a doide fails YOU did not solder it correctly [:D] they have over 100 years of mean time between failure it will not be the problem,, it is the best solution to this problem, just use 3 times the current needed for diode an never think about it again. RE: Charging rates?
Capacity about 130% is what i use so 3300mAH would be 4000mAH from a full discharged battery. So if the peak detection missed you got a stafety valve trying to help. This peak mV value is just a trial and error most start with a low value an if false peak an under charges we bump up an try again, as battery gets older they false peak more. But if a to high a value then battery gets very warm on charge cycle. Just trial an error until it's just right. Then program that in an save.

RE: Charging rates?
ORIGINAL: Goldenduff There is a danger of charging too slow. 0.8 is safe for all batteries.
Wow really no wonder he is confused. The best is overnite at C/10 exp. 3800mAH /10 charge at 400 mA this is form charge puts all batteries equal disavantage 12 hr charge an can not do peak detection cut off. that is where the 0.8C comes from, most peak detection chargers need .8 to 1.5C charge rate to work comes in at about 8mV to 12mV per cell. See the problem is any charge rate over about 0.5C if forgotten about "left on "will over charge a ruin batteries so they use peak detection to stop charger then as a stafty some will monitor the temperature etc etc.. it story goes on an on. This is why you don't get a a straight answer. [:o] I like 0.8 C myself an set at 8mV on NiMH use 10mV on NiCAD , favorite is zero peak @ 0.5C an then trickle at /10C until i get to it. Rich

RE: 12v starter Lipo battery?
ORIGINAL: skypiratescotty Hi All OK, so this is what I came up with. I found a NIB vintage Royal Heavy Duty starter for $20. With leads on I hooked it to my 12v Lb battery and it would barely turn my GMS .76, but once I connected it to a 3000mah 14.8v 20c Lipo it will easily crank my Magnum 120 2-stoke. It'll start my buddies YS 170 4-stroke easily too. I have no doubt that this would really give a ton of extra punch to any 12v starter, in fact I'm gonna connect it to my cheapy Tower Hobbies starter just for sh*ts and giggles. I know the battery is a little much but it was on sale for $22 so for under $50 I have a starter that will turn anything as big as I plan on flying.
