RE: Red Wing Sbach profile
Yes, and be sure to add the tristock to back the motor mount up. The pieces are not big but apparently they make a significant difference. You'll like the build. Very nice. Pushrods are great! Why don't others include nice stuff like these? bob branch

RE: Red Wing Sbach profile
Make that 3 motor mount failures. Started it up and awful vibration, within seconds heard a crack then another as first the top and then the bottom of the motor mount U fractured and the motor fell off to the side on the starting stand. Fortunately rpm was low and the fuel line pinched off immediately before someone could be hurt. I am not sure even how to repair it. Also not sure I have enough confidence to even fly it if I did fix it. Probably going into the junk can. bob branch

RE: Nitro to Electric Information
Big Art Adamisn did them a number of years ago but could not find takers. Course a fox is not a competative motor today, but the difference is stunning. Just be sure not to use an electric pusher prop on a glow motor. They are not designed to take the pulse loads of a glow motor and are much smaller in cross section (and much mroe efficient) and will blow off blades if used for glow motors.

RE: Nitro to Electric Information
On the contrary the effect of pusher props on control line planes is not just considerable it is dramatic! It is so dramatic that the control line stunt community has been working with APC and they with us to develop more electric pusher props for us to use. It is one of the three dramatic advantages electrics have over glow motors in CL stunt. The reverse rotation of the prop causes P-factor to occur in the other direction so that at high angles of attack the tail of the plane is pushed in and thus the nose out and line tension gets created. Glow motor planes suffer dramatic loss of line tension at the high power high altitude maneuver areas, particularly the 3rd corner of the hourglass and the third loop of the clover. Reverse rotation changes this entirely and you wind up with the same line tension that you have anywhere else in the pattern. It is a huge advantage and the greater the wind the greater the advantage. Until you have flown the same plane with and without pusher prop its hard to believe how dramatic it is. I fly primarily planes in the 550 to 750 sq inch size (.40 to piped .75 glow size) and no longer use any tractor props. The other two huge advantages are governed engine control that gives instantaneous power increase when more power is needed and dramatic breaking on down lines thus eliminating windup of airspeed, especially in windy conditions. The other of course is the 100% consistency of motor run one flight to the next. No more scrapped flights because of a poor engine run. Once set to the engine run rpm you want you are done. Each flight is the same month after month, year after year. Much more usable practice. bob branch

RE: Precision Aerobatics Ultimate or Zero Gravity Pitts?
I have considerable experience with the Zero Gravity. It requires a lot of patience to get to fly decent. Lots of mixes required. Once I got them figured out the it has been a decent little plane. In no way does it compare to the PA Extra or Katana or the Sebarts in the same size range. It is more of a novelty. Having said that I know some really good fliers that felt the Zero gravity just was not worth the time and effort. It is built beautifully well, however. Having said all this I will say that I have always found 3D bipes to require considerable work to get to fly decently. I have no experience with the PA ultimate. I do enjoy the zero gravity though now and its a real fun fly. bob

The 42-60 is a real torque monster. Its a really good motor. I find the over square outrunners ie longer than diameter have real good torque and work very well in 3D mode. I have flown Turnigy motors interchangeably with my axi's and not been disappointed. Their lipos are outstanding also. bob

Magic Box source
I am trying to locate a source that makes a device we used to call a "magic box." It was used to drive two accessory pushrods off main pushrod. This was often used to drive flaps with hinge lines swept at an angle to each other. Most involved an aluminum block which the pushrod wires ran thru and had machine screws used to lock the pushrods in place. The flaps usually had a strip type control horn. I saw them somewhere online in the lasts year or two but did not bookmark it (dummy!). Any help anyone can offer would be appreciated. thanks, bob

I used balsarite once and it made a mess of the plane. It seemed very thick and the brush strokes it left were horrible. I tried to sand it and it just gunked the paper. Is it supposed to be thinned and if so with what? What should its consistancy be. Mine was almost to honey. bob

how to do no bubble monocote on sheeting?
I am pretty fair at film covering. Not great, but I can do an ok job. I pretty much gave up using monocote about 4 eyars ago because of issues with it bubbling and blistering more in the sun more than ultracote. But I need to use a color on a scale plane only available in monocote. I need help! How do you get a monocote job on sheeted surfaces that does not blister up and stays stuck down? I don't need help on open bays, just sheeted balsa. Thanks, bob

John Thanks for correcting the link. I'm dissapointed the brush is not available at Jo Ann Fabric stores as a whole. Means it must be from a local supplier to the local store. Brushed dope finish thread
Just thought I would share if anyone is interested that I am currently posting a thread on the AMA district VII web site [link]http:// forum.amadistrictvii.org[/link] a thread on how to do a competition level brushed dope finish using Brodak Dope. It is drawn from teaching dvd's by Windy Urtnowski but adapted to a brush finish from the spray finish used most commonly in competition stunters. Sometimes you just don't have the conditions to allow a spray finish. My problem this year. It is being done on a nobler and will have photos where they are helpful. To see the photos you have to register on the site but there is no charge and you do not need to be an AMA member. After you have registered scroll down to the control line section. You will find its a pretty active community with a number of threads over 5000 views. You will find the thread in the control line building forum. It will be done as I progress along with the plane so its an ongoing thread. bob branch

RE: Ultra R/C Giles 202 UL 29%
Walt I can't understand what all the grief has been about. This solves the gear problem 100%. It makes it like a normal plane. Weight gain in very small and the plane handles it with any of the power systems people use. It just escapes me why people put up with those tubes. Their advantage is all theoretical and the disadvantages are legion on this thread. You'll love the bird. It really does it all very well. bob

RE: Vectorflight Edge 540 build
I know I am going to open up a can of worms when I do this. But I got a suprise today that may help someone. When Vectorflight closed down I managed to get one of the very last 58 inch extras. It was actually my favorite VF plane, even though alot has been written about the others. Powered with a ST .90 it was so wonderfully overpowered it just kept accelerating in verticle flight like it was in level flight. So when I hear VF was going to go away I managed to get one and have kept it since for a time when I just needed something really special to fly again and a .90 to go in it. Mine was the one VF posted on their web page for the plane. It was my 3rd rc plane and I lost it learning the lumechevak during my first year of flying rc. After killing one more plane, a highly modified Fourstar 60 also with ST .90 power I finally learned you have to break the stall before you try to fly out. Most of my flying is in 3D stuff now but its still something I have to remind myself of every now and again as I get too low in a flat spin or some such thing. So I needed a break from the scratch build plane I am working on and cleared the bench and opened the box. And I just had to smile. Vectorflight even at the end kept up the incredible service. In the box were 3 extra sets of landing gear, including composite ones (I had suggested that to them for the edge and retrofitted mine), 3 extra canopies and 2 extra cowls for the small extra, .... and lo and behold an edge 540 cowl! They knew I had one and had already reordered one after an engine failure into the weeds. This one is definately a second and probably was not ever going into a kit but they sent it just the same. Unfortunately I had not opened the box til after I decommissioned my edge this fall. As I said, it is a second. It has two blems, creases actually, one on each side of the cowl running along the top corner. But if you do not have a cowl for the bird and need one desperately, it will probably suffice. I am sure anyone can fill in behind with body filler and sand thru the creases and create a surface they can paint of the proper contour. Or it can be used for a mold, which might be the best call. It is totally uncut and virgin so it could be opened up at the tape line along the bottom so a mold could be made with the wedge out so it could be pulled together to duplicate the original. So I guess the question is who needs it? Do I give it to the first person to contact me or to someone who will make a mold from it. I'd kind of prefer to do the later so the cowl can be made but I fully appreciate there are probably not many of these still flying. So let me know. I'll wait til say Christmas day. If no one has offered to make a mold by then it will go to the first one who asks for it. Lets just do the notifications thru this thread. I think anyone with interest in the plane is still subscribed to this thread. Hope I have made somebody's day. bob branch

RE: Ultra R/C Giles 202 UL 29%
Don't agonize over the gear. I used a light ply plate and carbon gear mentioned in other threads. Its a no brainer and it works. I'm not into fixing a system over and over again. I want it so it works day after day. I have enough flights on it to know that its a bombproof solution. The plane is so light the few ounces are insignificant. I have flown it with an os 2.00 four stroke and an OS 1.60 two stroke, both turning 20X8 powerpoint props. the weight difference there is over an 8 oz penalty to the 2 stroke. It hovers and pulls out vertically with authority on both motors. Provide that much power, and its gonna fly great. The only kicker was the gear and this fix solves it. ... If anyone carps at the 20X8 on the 1.60 I flew it with the apc 18 inch wide prop people reference most commonly and its alot weaker than the 20X8 in thrust and I am still not at full tilt needle wise in the breakin sequence. bob

RE: Ultra R/C Giles 202 UL 29%
I have a very late one, got it at Toledo this year from OMP. No mention in the manual of reinforcemnets to the structure. The key area to look at in reinforcing the motor box are the verticle members behind the front former of the fuselage, ie aft of the motor box. Make sure you have good glue joints there or you can get flex in the top of the engine box. I found this to be the case with my OS 200FS which kept backfiring and loosened these joints. Reglued and they are fine now with the OS 1.60 up front. I had 2 defective motors, bad cam gears and multiple backfires so alot of wrenching got done with a 20 inch prop up front. I have no gas motor experience so you guys with it can evaluate it further yourselves. bob

RE: Ultra R/C Giles 202 UL 29%
Just a brief follow up. The official verdict from OS was that the second 200FS was defective also. Looks like they got a bad batch. I'll be repowering with an OS 1.60 two stroke. Also noted that the violence of the backfire caused loosening of the glue joints in the fuse that the engine box stiffens to. The fire wall was intact but the front flexed and these joints, essentially between the gear and meeting the fuel tank floor came loose. You might want to double check them. Reglue will solve in my senario. Also, could someone tell me the prop size that is working out best with the OS 1.60? Is it 18X6 or 18 X 8? Anyone tried a 20 inch prop with this mill? bob

RE: Ultra R/C Giles 202 UL 29%
Just thought I'd post an update on the OS 200FS since it may relate to someone considering the motor. Power wise its wonderful. Reliability wise there may be a problem. I just had the second one die after only 6 flights. The first one never got airborn. It kept backfiring during the breakin runs (two tanks per OS) and then would not start at all. Of course everytime it backfires it spits the prop. We opened up the cam gear housing and all the gear teeth were ground off. Figured it must be a bad motor and oddly there was no timing dot to set the gear timing as it should be. Returned it to tower and they gave me a credit refund, but I requested a new motor which they promptly sent me. The new one backfired once during the breakin runs while trying to start it, but then ran fine. I was running fine but on the 6th flight after pulling a wall on the deck and then throttling up to enter a hover at about 50 feet she backfired again and spit the prop loose with the plane nose up vertical! Good news is yes indeed, it does fly like a foamie. I gave it full down and at 5 feet off the ground hit hard elevator and she turned and floated about a hundred feet beforfe touching down. The bad news is on opening up the cam gear compartment the gear teeth were again ground off and there was metal particles on the cam gear. So its going back, this time for the refund and I will select another power plant, either an OS 1.6 or a Dave Patrick Moki 1.8. I'm leaning to the OS just cause its suck a reliable runner and because having already cut the hole in the cowl for the muffler I can go with the stock muffler and it will fit and not cost what a pitts does. Anyway, not sure if I just got a couple motors from a bad batch, or if there is a design problem. No timing dot on this motor either. I have never had a problem with an OS motor, so this is pretty perplexing but in light of my previous reports on the motor I thought I owed this report to you guys as well. bob
