RE: Jett .35 Viper Plane Setup
Being a recent deserter to eldectric, please note the only glow engine left in the cabinet is a Jett 35. The 90, 50 and 40's sold well cause they were running like new. The 35 is 9 or more years old and still squeeks at near tdc. Ok, get the rear backing plate mount from Jett, works great for most installs. Try to get a washer behind each screw into the engine at the same depth as stock. Will need to make them up to be safe. You can remove the rear remote needle valve and mount it directly to the plywood, or side of the fuse. Play with the tank line a little and take it out the side, then to NV. Worked well for me for 4 or 5 raceing seasons in out club. Club guys hated that little 35, kicked butt for years. Aircraft was a viper wing cut down to 40", yes 40". Fuse was from a older viper used as a template, made 3/8 wider sides and top, streemlined the nose. You need to add 1/2" to the engine bay firewall and 1/2" to the tail. I dont like V tails much, so removed the stock tail from a old standard viper. Start the CG same as called out for the viper. Guaranteed to grove, land nice and reasonable slow if you keep things light as you should. Stayed in one piece for 4 or so club seasons in a anything goes class, finished first most of the time. You can't winn them all, just try try try. If back plate mount is high bucks, send me your address via mail www.rmenke@sbcglobal.net, will send you mine, you return $20.00 on receipt and approval of condition. Good luck and ENJOY.

RE: Does 3D Prop size matter? 130g Motor at 14x7 for 3D HobbyShop EPP Yak 48
Gizmo: You need to learn what size motor you need to do what starting off. First, just how much motor do you need? Useing weight as a basis is my mort used method. Ok, common smarts say yoiu need 4s0 oz of thrust to hold your airframe in hover. But, you need more power to pjull out of a gioof up. Decide how must thrust you are going to shoot for leaving say 20% for over rating, which most manufacturers do. Most great 3D pilots will suggest 2 to one, some as far as 3 to 1. So 40 oz X 2 = 80 oz 0 oz.Add. 20% ending with 96 oz of thrust needed. If you have something near that, say 90 to 140 oz. Try it, you can always exchange a stronger motor. If the suggested prop for the motor is say 12X6, start with a 12X4. Lower pitch will draw less watts and slow things down a Little, advantage pilot. Always check pour motor-prop decisions with a watt meeter, alwas, always!! I always use a 4 or 3.5 pitch prop to slow things down. ( really old guy) If you really want to check things out, tie a fish scale to the aircrafts tail and run hur up. Enjoy

I run a extra 2 oz. of castor just for insurance. A habbit I got into in the 70's from reading engine tests from the designers of the time. Fore some reason, the extra 2 oz in 15% really wakes up my webra 55 and 35 speed, the Jetts like it also. Just a little insurance, and the things seem to run foreaver and ever. After around 11 years of reliable scooting, I would not sell my Jett 35, peroid. I just may take it with me!!! ENJOY

Teachu2: Hate to see someone like you giving up the hobby after 20 years of enjoyment. I assume eyessight and reactions are giving you some problems. Couple of years ago I started selling off my gasser and glow stuff and accumulated my fair share of electric stuff. The same basic problems are in the electric side, ARF's that are advertised as the best ever etc. Most of them have been passed along and they were all hype BS and not my thing. There have been some outstanding flyere is still have after a year or more, like the Addiction X. Better than sex, not that I remenber much about that at 77. The foamies are great fun as I design my own things and can fly them in the back yeard or down a couple of blocks to a open park. Have some real strange things flying, some good, others beyond my abilities. Don't put a lot of bucks into the electrics, but have a great time with them. If you get tired of watching TV, etc. give 2.4 and the little guys a try. New challanges and learning curve you will enjoy.

Bob 2: Am afraid our problems with these airframes is US! The AJ Extra 330 I have is just too unstable for me. It wing wags, snaps out of high alpha and most of the harder 3-D stuff. I have seen the same identical setup airframe in the hands of AJ and it works just fine for him. Has a great deal to do with very good eyesight. If you can't see it starting to fall off, you are behind what is going on and just too late to recover with ease., or at all. The top pilots are simply not from our world. Ever seen a bi-plane fly backwards 30-40 feet. I have, just blown away, just not possible, but I saw it. You had better get going cause that kid of yours will start to make you look bad in a short time. Trust me, get a Addiction X and you will never go back to much else. I do take out a couple of foamys once in a while,a old a old RCX "Illusion" and RC Powers Extra 300 that somehow live through a old man showing off. ENJOY

I had the AJ Extra 330 and it has not been to the field after the first day. I usually take out my all time favorite, the Presision Airobatics Addiction or Addiction X. Have a new icon with the AT&T girl help service that aids you to go directly to a scammer group. They also have a virus system for sale being advertised on the net. Wonder what may be in there. RE: Which Park Flyer ???
Sounds like you have a great setup for fun anytime you are home and have the urge. Youre best bet is the foamys, and to go electric with almost all the smaller stuff, you need 2.4. Fatuba makes a conversion kit for your radio, with that you are first class and good to go. You also need to buy a decent "Watt Meeter" before you start any electric project, also a decent charger. I suggest a cell-pro 4 up to the cell-pro 10. One has kept me out of trouble for years. Lots of good information out there in RCU and others, typically the guys are outstanding, but most expect you to do some on line research yourself for basics so they can be of more help with tough stuff. Suggest you go to RC Powers for his free extra 300 foamy, and build per plans and equipment recommendations. It 3-D's well and will not cost a arm and leg for equipment that works well. Like most of the good 3-D machines, slow it down with expo and low rates and they make a great trainer. You need to find a good electric guy in the club if you can just to keep you out of trouble if you can. After several years playing with electrics my radios are a converted JR-10 and Spectrum-8, love both, no problems for a very old coot to usse. Out of the 20 plus on the ceiling, the best flying balsa birds are higher end equiped, Hacker motors, Castle controllers and name brand batteries. But what flys and what gathers dust? Almost always, a precision airobatics Addiction X or the smaller addiction goes out and flys. Simply the best birds ever over around 50 years of loving the hobby, from racing to pattern to current 3-D. Why 3-D for a old 77 year coot. Well, personality flaws. Its a challange, love a challange. Flaw part is simply must be king of the hill crap. Am not best of the best, but trying. Tried rolling circles for several years. Got around a couple of time but then???. With the Addictions, whee, all day. Other advertised best of the best like AJ Extra sits and gathers dust. May be a good bird for good experts, but it snaps and wing wags. Don't need that. Back yard is small, ok, but a park just down the road. For just having fun here, I have a bunch of Hobby King motors, controllers, receivers and batteries. Was shocked at how well their stuff works in the majority. Have had one bad motor bearing and one bad li-po cell over the years. Understand their system, stay with the USA warehouse if you can, remember almost all the electric manufactures ect. over rate their stuff, so most are adequate, gotta use the head, but lots of diamonds at very reasonable prices in there. Hope this helps you out and eases things along. ENJOY >the old coot.

Skaife: Saw my first "Hots" in 1972 at a AMA pattern contest in Madera, Ca. It got some attention as the "Novice" class pilot flew it around all over the place on knife edge. I remember it well because I had to fly against a couple of guys by the name of Phil Kraft and Joe Bredi and got my butt handed to me at the end of the second day. Both guys were nice and cordial, we spent a few hours on the tail gate sucking up some suds. The Hots has always been tail heavy from day one. I think to work with the heavy "Webras" of the day. Keep it as light as you can, move the motor forward until you get your CG. Good luck!! ENJOY

RE: 3D Plane...What to buy??
Hi: In over 50 years of flying and enjoying the hobby, I have given only one airplane away. A funtanna. So bad I just could not charge anyone for the junk. When 3D came into voge, the only guys in the 100 member club learing to fly it was the kids. One day a kid friend just handed me the Tx while flying a wild little foamy and walked away. The thing was a joy to fly, so now I gotta have one just to keep up and continue to kick butt. Started with the larger glow 70 inchers, then gas 50's. Dumb thumbs were starting to hirt finances, so I tryed the small foamy electrics. Now, gotta learn 3D and electrics at the same time. Did a lot of flying and crashing. Stumbled onto RC Powers free Extra design, and darn it was good, could hover with ease and get around a rolling circle once or twice. Bought a lot of stuff the mags and on line raved about, but just did not cut it for a real old guy. Got a percisionairobatics "Addiction" and really enjoyed it. Stable, never snapped out and did most everything I asked of it. Then the "Addiction X" larger version cameout, and had to have it also. Now in my shop, the only 2 of 20 some are kept clean and go to the field, yep the addictions! The AJ extras and such are real dusty hanger queens. Most everything would die the first time out, while the addictions are alive and well after more than a year. The old RC Powers extra is still alive, abet a lot heaver from repairs from the back yard fun. Gets snapped in half when being agressive like flying the addictions. Hope this helps you in a good direction! ENJOY

RE: 3d setup need old school advice
Hay madmorgan: One thing you will find out here is that if you are given poor direction, many of the other guys will jump all over whom ever. Not a bad thing unless you have thin skin. Props are not expensive, try a 12X4 and note the difference. Go ahead and buy the gear system, you will chuck it if the plane lives long enough. A correct motor and prop is the best way to go, period. Usually the motor, prop, controller and battery is a decent setup that you can live with. Flying electrics is a acquired skill. I can get 15 minutes of good flight with the same equipment the guys can only get 10. I am not necessarily a better pilot, I have learned to apply just enough throttle to do what I want, anything more is a waste of energy. You need to quit electrics or learn how to size motors, controllers and batteries. The first tool you need is that watt meeter. Yes, the motor or controller will let you know if you are over propping your setup. How? Its going to burn out and force you to keep trying something that will stay alive with normal use. There are lots of ways to size a motor for the weight of your airframe. I am lazy and do not want to go through all those calculations and motor charts. I want to know what I have is going to put out the power I need before we go flying. How? Lazy remember? Ok, I have a little test stand where the motor fixture is on free running ball bearing wheels (shower door rollers from Low's) kept in line with runners on each side. A eye at the end of the cart takes a 50 lb fish leader that attaches to a good digital fish scale. If setting up a 8 pound airplane, I am looking for around 16 pounds of thrust out of my choice of systems. I know what that sucker is going to give, or not. Yep, a watt meeter sets between the battery and system so I can see what things are actually drawing. A 500 watt motor that is pulling 600 watts gets a smaller pitch prop and or length until its pulling 450 or so without getting hot. If everything is within specks and things get hot, I will go with a slightly higher system even if things are withing their ratings. Manufacturers frequently over rate their products, motors, controllers, batteries etc. There a great how-to information on the net, you need to learn whats what or pay a nasty price for not doing it. Going to shut up now!! Enjoy

RE: 3d setup need old school advice
Hi madmorgan: You want a old timer, how about 77? Yes I fly 3d electrics cause I can still see them in close. Ok, the guys told you the motor is adequate, and wonder about your prop size. First things first. Will the thing hover as is without getting motor or battery hot? For what its worth, I stay away from gear systems, just another thing to go wrong and more weight. Buy a watt meeter and use it to find out if your prop or controller is adequate. Just follow the instructions, not rocket sience. You can not really tell where you are at without a watt meeter, a cheep investment that will save you big bucks in a short time. Now, a pro were are not. I assume you are past your teens. Know that today's kids are not human, so don't try to follow until you can do good rolling circles. Yes I can. A lot of the pros will use 6 pitch props. Great for the pros. Us guys are much better off with a 4 pitch prop. Lets the motor hover without a lot of strain, and best of all, slows things down a bit, bails out with authority. If your setup does not pull you out quickly with ease, find a fix that will. Bigger is not always better, weight is our mutual enemy. This is a start, read stuff by Red Schoefield, Dr. Kiwi and learn from all including the 3D forum guys. Enjoy

For what it's worth: Recently bought same for my specktrum 8 as the stock battery went away much to soon. The endloop battery from no bs batteries was better, but not by much. Then I discover specktrum had come out with a 2000 or more li-po, so bought it, and can use the old batteries for something else. The li-po does the job. 3 days of flying and its still on top, well worth the bucks. You should be able to find something for that high end 12X. Enjoy

Wildbill: I have also done that b4. Before the charger could detect what was going on, it went poof, by by gasser yak 54, garage carpet and smoked house. Yes, was right there, fortunately back a few feet. You should have a volt meeter in your shop. Then you can check the battery voltage rather than rely on a auto function of a charger. RE: How do you KNOW
Stang: After over 50 years in the hobby, I do not believe any of the manufacturers hype about anything. Manufacturers suggested gear is just a start for me. The motor will face the watt meeter, many times it will put out less than 1/2 the watts its rated for. Often I have to go to the motor stash and find something close to what the bird needs, proven again by the watt meeter. Next, satisfied with the watts and prop, out comes my fishing scale. Tie scale to rear of airframe, crank up and see the pull (thrust) the system generates. Weigh the airframe complete. What was the ratio of airframe weight to thrust? Now you are dealing with real world performance. If the ratio is around 1 to 1, that means it will fly just fine for general sport, but you need something around 2 to 1 or even 3 to one thrust to weight ratio, dependant on your general likes. My stuff is generally over 1.75 to 2 to 1. I need the power to excape from my many goofs. Am very happy with the bird hovering at around 1/2 throttle, over 10 minutes of flight time. Airframes? Try to fly a club members bird before you buy. There is usually someone who brings out the good new stuff. See how it flys for you and don't bother with looking at the vids. The top guys QQ, AJ, and others are not human, you are. I have watched one of the best fly a bi-plane of his design backwards and 4' or so off the ground for 30-40 feet. (Chip Hyde). Great guy, he let me fly the same airframe. Best flying thing ever. He spends Months finding the best set up, us, maybe a few hours. If you don't like the way a bird flys, yours is not going to be much better. I have a AJ extra that has been flown twice, a Hyperion Yak 54 , both around 50" and gathering dust. I fly the heck out of a RC Powers home built foamy from free plans, and P.A. Addiction and Addiction X. Another 15 or so hung up also gathering dust. Wish things were simpler, and manufacturders were much more honest etc.. ENJOY

Its not like we have any real need for their bodies. If the government gave them a satelite it would be a whole different reaction. I do have a problem with a lot of the green issues. Such as global warming when green leaning professors are caught stacking the computer models, and how big business green has been allowed to become. Billions to solar pannels, and electric cars, outlawing oil development along with hidro-electro facilities. When gas gets to $7-8.00 a gallon and we can not afford to eat because agricluture is denied water in favor of the fish, we might wake up a little. Patrick: I am a airplane guy, ages in the rc hobby. It is rare that a Hobby Shop will get you in the best direction on your first buy. Sad but true. Its sort of like the current crop of politicions, smart,. but don't really have a clue on whats going on in the real world. I think its worth your time to find and join a local club. You need to figure out what you want to do with the hobby. Normal sport uses, or racing. You will have to throw a lot of money into racing, got to have the best stuff along with being able to set up everything well. I got dragged into the dirt track stuff with a friend with a lot of sucess. Went to carpet racing as I did not like the time expended to clean up a dirt car. Whole new ballgame and equipment needs. Went back to airplanes because I could not get equal equipment to run against the factory sponsored guys, the local track operator did not want to offend the factory big boys. My stock motor could not compete with the factory guys stock motor, even when I snuck in a open hot motor. You need to decide just where you want to go with the hobby. You do not have to compete in racing to enjoy the hobby. There is a screw loose in the guys who must be among the best at what they do. I know because I am among them, even at the old age of 76. Hi B man: Former friend bought a framed up twin-air 45 cheep and brought it over to me to finish. Did not look bad at a glance so ok. That was 9 months ago, or more. Most every part had to be removed and corrected for something, usually thrust lines and incidencs at least close to 0-0-0. Now it sanded and ready to cover with a full can of Hobbylite filler. Change of plans, (former friend) wants to convert it to electric. Can do (with a lot of shimming) and a week or so. His time and materials bill is looking like a new home at this point, so the thing will probably hang around here until they sell off my small estate. Oh well, something for the next club auction. RE: Turnigy Good or Bad?
I have 25 or so Turnigy motors from small to SK 45 size. Turnigy hacker 40/40 copy performs as well as the real Hacker 40/40 in another similar airframe. Only problem I have had is a lead connection wire had to be epoxied down to the case on a very small motor. Never a thrown magnet I have had better luck with the turnigy pro ESC's than Castle Creations, no problem with any, all my CC ESSC have died. (5). Did get one bad battery, a 1800 25C, one bad cell. Do run Hackers on what I feel are special flyers, like the Performance airobatice Addiction X. ENJOY

RE: Brushless gets hot
Newbe: Right off, this is a pusher installation, so no air is going over the motor, ESC and battery. Not to worry, you need a watt meeter to do things right anyway. Prop until you have watt draw below the rating of the moror, ESC and battery. Usually they go cheep on the ESC, so a HK turnigy pro rated around 10 more watts will do the job. There is lots of great info on the web, go to Red Schoefields "Battery Clinic" for great tips and got to know info, also Dr. Kiwi knows his stuff and lots of good info from him and others. A couple of years ago, I decided the 3D guys were having more fun,so gotta take on a new challange. After a while, the challange became affording the equipment at the rate I was killing it. A buddy started me off on the cheepie Hobby King stuff, motors, ESC's and batteries. Now, after learning to do good rolling circles I am back to some higher end stuff, but do not see much change in quality and performance. There are some 20 birds on the ceiling including AJ extras, Yacks and other "The best flyers ever". Most are very dusty as what goes to the field are a couple of RC Powers designs along with a Performanceairobatics Addiction X. What I learned to do rolling circles on and the only one of the 20 that would be replaced if I lost it. Truly a great forgiving flyer, needed whin you hit 76 like this old foggy. Maby my satisfaction with the Hobby King stuff is luck, or the fact that my last name is same as one of the HK owners. If i got into raceing and other high performance stuff, yes back to thunderpower, hacker and others. Read, read, read and ENJOY

RE: 225MG
Zach: I have used them on Q-500 to several 40 sized 3D'rs with no issues. Looking in my servo box i see several that are old, old, old and still running fine. One thing I hate is poor centering, so I test them when new and chuck the poor ones after salvageing case and gears. High dollar birds get all new high end fast and high torque JR's. Don't have many of those things any more after going electric several years ago. Have as much fun with a foamy as any of the 30-50 gassers, but that is just this old guy. ENJOY

RE: Battery pack exhibits weird behavior during charging
Paul: Seems like every time I try to use a questionable battery, it costs me a airplane. Give it to someone you don't really care for.
