RE: Great Planes Escapade .40 ARF
How fast would you consider 'high speed' for the Escapade? I've clocked mine at 98mph (running electric) and it's rock solid.
ORIGINAL: jeffie8696 The Epade is known for having difficulties with high speed flutter so pushing the speed is done with caution.
RE: DeNight Special 50 ARF by Hangar 9
First 2 flights went well. This plane doesn't like grass fields, and both landings resulted in a nose-over. No damage though. I did fly it a few times down at the WATTS event in Owatonna (nice smooth fabric runway) and it flies great. Not as fast as I thought it would be, but I'm going to try out a few different props.

RE: DeNight Special 50 ARF by Hangar 9
Finally got mine built. And it's a pig with an AUW of 122.7oz/ 7.67lbs. I used an E-Flight Power 52, ZTW 85A ESC, Xoar 13x8 electric wood prop, Enerland/Polyquest 5S4400 25c lipo, BMS 621-MG servos, AR6200 with sat RX, Castle 10A BEC with a 2S1000 lipo for rx power. The wattmeter shows 900w at 50A with a half charged battery (4.0v per cell). I would estimate 1000w with a fully charged lipo. Haven't flown it yet but I plan to this week. I can prop up to a 15x7 (according to E-Flite's specs) if this doesn't have enough power.

RE: DeNight Special 50 ARF by Hangar 9
I was considering this plane a while back and now that the price went way down I'm getting two of them next week (always good to have a spare). I've read though this thread and a couple other about the power requirements for this model. For those that have the Power 42 (or equivalent) are you happy with the performance? I have a Great Planes Escapade with a Scorpion motor ($$$) that will do around 98mph. I don't think I want the DeNight to go that fast- maybe mid 70's or so. I already have a ZTW 85A ESC and four 4s4000mAh lipos (for the Escapade and my RCM Funster), but I think I'll need a 5s because the DeNight weighs in at 7lbs. I'm thinking 5s and a 12x8 Xoar or Vox electric wood prop should move along pretty well. Also, why the requirement for digital servos? A good analog with around 80oz would suffice. Thoughts or opinions? Thanks.

RE: Burning up motors! What gives?
What size prop and battery are you using? That motor can handle 24A and your using an 18A ESC. I wouldn't go any less than a 30A depending on your setup.

RE: Breezy Days
I'm using a HeadsUpRC 450 1100kv motor, 30A ESC, 10x6 prop and 3s1500-3s1800mAh lipos. I didn't bother cutting in flaps- doesn't need them. Flies great in the wind. Plenty of power on a 450 although a 480 would really make it rip.

RE: Breezy Days
Any of the 'stick' type planes are fun in the wind. I have the E-Flite Mini Ultra Stick and I've flown that in 20mph+ winds. I also have a couple of Crash Test Hobbies EPP Assassin combat wings that are an absolute blast to fly on windy days.

RE: E-Flite Mini Funtana Undercarriage
On most of my smaller ARF's I beef up the landing gear area with extra tri-stock and epoxy. Or you can use small strips of basswood/ light ply. I've read where some people use nylon bolts instead of the metal ones on the landing gear so it will break off on a hard landing instead of ripping out the whole bottom. I don't do that on low wing planes because if you use wheel pants there's a possibility of them tearing the covering on the bottom of the wing.

Hopefully the 60 sized will be the same as the 40 so it can be set up either glow or electric. I'm really enjoying my electric powered one (RIP .46 Escapade).

RE: Great Planes Escapade .40 ARF
I demolished my Escapade a few weeks ago due to dumb thumbs and orientation. I bought another and this time I'm going electric. Haven't been able to maiden it but I'm using a Scorpion 3026-10 980kv, 4S4000mAh lipo, Castle Phoenix 80A ESC, separate rx pack and an 11x7 prop. It shows around 950w static with the watt meter. Porky at 5.4lbs but my OS 46 powered one came out to about the same weight. I may have to add an ounce or 2 to the nose, but if I remember on the last plane the CG was a bit back of the recommended point and it flew great.

RE: Does the battery pack PUSH amps into the motor?
It's possible one or more of the magnets have come loose or a bearing seized. I've read that a lot on the discussion threads on the HobbyKing site. I have quite a few of the Turnigy motors and the first thing I do with those motors is take them apart and run thin CA along the magnets and the housing. I can't find the motor you're using, only the 1100KV version.

RE: Great Planes Escapade .40 ARF
I don't have any problems taking off and landing on tall grass, even with the wheel pants on. The field I fly at isn't exactly golf course quality turf. I do have to replace the wood prop from time to time due to the tips being worn off from mowing the lawn.

RE: Mini Ultra Stick in wind
I flew my MUS last week in 20-25+ winds. I only have a 450 and 10x6 prop on it but it handles the wind great. I programmed flaperons and it just about lands standing still in the wind. Lotsa fun.

I have a few of the Mystery 2S900mAh lipos for some of my foamies. The green labeled Mystery lipos are not holding the voltage they should, but I've really abused them. The newer silver ones I got from DealExtreme seem to be working great.

I personally would charge it at 1C or 2.5A. Unless that manufacturer says it can be charged at 2C or more, I would stick with 1C.

I just cleaned up an old Thunder Tiger 42 using Jungle Jake (Simple Green equivalent). I poured the cleaner into an old plastic ice cream tub and let the parts soak for a few hours. I used an old toothbrush to knock the heavy stuff off. Works great.

I have given the elevator full up deflection on mine and never had it snap. BUT- I do have the throws turned down a bit on the DX7. I know when I fly my 60" PAU Cap Maniac if I pull back full elevator with full deflection/ high rates at high speeds it will go into a wall then stall if I'm not paying close attention. The Escapade was meant for sport flying and not 3D shenanigans (I know- preaching to the choir). I don't have digital servos on mine though.
