RE: P38 Lightning 52 Flight characteristics
got it from Nitro models, its the 52 inch version they sell... I dont particularly attribute "this" crash to the center fuselage design, as i think it has more to with a slow tight turn, but was wondering if anyone else had noticed any anomalies with this plane.

P38 Lightning 52 Flight characteristics
Question for other modelers with the 52 inch p38 lightning. I've flown mine for several flights and with the motors I am running (recomended) its a little underpowered but not bad. It does just fine in the air and fine with most acrobatics and is a great looking bird in the sky. Landings and takeoffs are smooth and look good. I know the real plane had some peculiar flight tendancies due to the center fuselage, but any carryovers to the model? The other day I was in a banking turn and it went into an immediate flat spin that I couldnt recover from. It could be that the turn was too tight and too slow, but just curious if this design offers different flight challanges than a typical model. Plane is fine except for a busted nose piece BTW...

RE: motor prop combo for p38 twin
my 2200 packs are about a 1/4 inch longer than my 1800s, and the 1800 requires a shoe horn... I will try to step up my motor choice tho

RE: motor prop combo for p38 twin
Thanks for all the good info. I'm gonna cut and paste this info to my desktop for future reference, as I'm hunting a motor for a 62 inch electric Im working on now. I played around and got decent (while not fighter) performance from some 9x7 props on those motors, but the website and instructions specifically call for those motors and a pair of 1300-1600 mah lipos. With the 8x4 it flew but barely enough to circle the field to land. with the 9x7's I could perform basic maneuvers, but going vertical demonstrates the lack of cojones' these motors have, so I believe your right on needing to step up in the motor dept. However, there is barely room in the batt compartment for a pair of 1800's and no room for 2200's. I got 8min flight times with the current setup with battery to spare (both packs showed 12.0 volts at the end of the 8 min flight), but a slight upgrade in motor would help. 100 watts per pound in my book is about what you want for 3d stuff, and 75 watts per pound suits me fine for basic aerobatics and low fly-bys. Gotta say that that fork tailed devil looks cool as hell in the air tho... Btw - those 9x7's are one reg and one pusher, so I got my counter rotating blades which is cool too... Thanks again for all the good info, even if it does involve more math than I like... :)

motor prop combo for p38 twin
after taking my time I finally got my p38 52 inch lightning up in the air. Its a great looking bird and a good stable flyer, but not sure if I got the right motor / prop combo. Instructions were lousy, but found after I ordered my brushless motors that they recommended a pair of 350 - 400 kv motors. I saw on the nittro site that they recommended a 400 T motor with an 8x6 prop. I ordered what the web site recommended (Raiden 400t 1330 kV motors). Those motors with a 8x4 inch prop seemed a little under powered and did much better with a 10x6 prop, but I was worried that those props were too big for those motors. Any suggestions on the right prop size & pitch for these raiden 400 t 1300kv motors, or do I need to try and find the right motors? Of course almost all of the motors on the nitro site were sold out...

RE: DAMAGE SHIPPING/MISSING PARTS ISSUES____Post here
thanks - the more I looked at it the more it looks like it is part of the fuselage, and my fuselages were just cut wrong. I can fix it. Looking forward to the manual.

I need the wing mounts on the 52 inch p-38. The twin fuselages did not come with the balsa/ply wing notches that the wings fit into on the fuseleages for the front of the wings. They are held down by the nylon screws in the back, but the front of the wings slide into some plywood notches that arent anywhere in the kit. Any help?

RE: manual
ORIGINAL: nitrostaff1 I'm sending you a better manual. This one has 10 pages. John Nitro Planes
ORIGINAL: trashslammer This manual for the P-38 51.5'' is a waste of paper. This is a complicated plane! The manual has essentialy 5 pages of instructions. It doesn't even begin to describe issues that are to define the building of this plane. Why is there not an option for rudders? How exactly are the mass balancers on the elevator reproduced? There are no pictures or descriptions of the dowel rods that are used to hold the front of the wings in place. Why does one of my elevator push-rods come out of the side of one of the fuselages, and the other come out of the bottom? Which fuselage goes on which side? They are angled, and there is no guidance. Please tell me there is a more complete manual, or some online instructions or something. Thank you: Brian; email: bjbc04@suddenlink.net

I was assuming a second manual existed based on the above quote.. thanks anyway. Joe

RE: manual
can you email me a pdf of the better manual for the p38 52 inch model? The model looks fairly straightforward and I can probably build it with what they call a manual that was included, but if the better one is available I'd love to have a copy. Thanks!
