RE: adding castor?
Tucson has a large group of CL flyers and I am fairly sure they could point you to a nearby shop that carried fuel suitable for the Fox engines. Maybe the best way to connect with them would be through www.stunthanger.com and there are a lot of CL guys there with a ton of experience running Fox motors (along with some that think they belong in a "Fox Toss" contest.... RE: adding castor?
You do not need more than 25% oil in your fuel even for the iron/steel technology in the older Fox motors. Most of them will run well on fuel that has some synthetic oil in the mix as long as at least half the oil is castor. Fox Superfuel (which can be ordered from Fox Manufacturing in quart containers) is 5% nitro, and 29% castor. Sig Mfg makes a good all castor fuel with 25% castor. You can run a synthetic mix but one lean run can cause damage in the older style motors. That said even cool power and omega fuels that are very low in oil content are okay in a Fox if you add at least 8 oz of castor oil to a quart of their fuel and avoid lean engine runs. There should be a visible cloud of oil coming out the exaust when the engine is running... the smoke trail when flying on a calm night is impressive. Castor by not burning pulls heat from the engine and if you do get a lean run it thickens casing the motor to slow down without being badly damaged. Most synthetics will vaporize at high temps leaving very little to lubricate the motor. Synthetics also remove the glaze that forms on the iron piston in old style engines... that glaze helps protect the moving parts. An old Fox may have great compression and with one lean run on all synthetic fuel loose compression so badly as to be hard to start. Bob

RE: Top Flite Combat Kitten
Locally not much maybe $20. On ebay with photos maybe twice that and shipping. The kits are not quite rare but out of production and treasured by some of us old guys who flew them as kids. They are not competitive in the current 1/2A combat environment (check the www.brodak.com website for a plane called a gladiator to see what folks are flying today). Bob

RE: question on Fox engines
I think your question is will the Fox engines run on fuel with a mix of methanol and castor oil with no nitro? The answer is yes but with some reduced power. They all run with more power when nitro is in the mix. Bob

RE: Sterling Ringmaster
Looking at this string of messages I am struck by the fact that only one or two other message strings have as many folks that have viewed them. That got me thinking... how many of you would be interested in a Ringmaster ARF? I emailed Estes asking to purchase the rights to Sterling's CL models. They have not replied but who knows... Bob Furr

RE: Free "lite" 1/8" 3-ply plywood
Not free but definitely inexpensive... the damaged hollow core doors sold at large hardware stores like Minards often can be scrapped for the plywood facing. It is even better when you get one that is being sold very cheap because it was not well glued... usually the ply on those is already falling off. One 36" wide 7' tall door supplies a lot of inexpensive 3 ply wood. Bob Furr

RE: First Control line Coroplast
Sorry I took so long to reply. Look on the web for the MANWIN trainer. I believe it is on a Canadian website. The delta we fly is the same size and construction just a swept back leading edge. My only warning is that it is easy to make the plane so noseheavy that it is hard to get into the air and will have no glide. Try doing a stock MANWIN first. Bob Furr

RE: TF FS ARF CG
I threw this suggestion out on a CL combat group on Yahoo. How about a Flite Streak only speed limited combat contest? Omaha will be adding it to their October 2006 contest. Anyone else interested? Seems to me a couple of OS 25s and about 3 planes (maybe $250 total) would keep you flying combat all summer. Bob Furr

RE: Propane Pulse Jet
The only propane pulse jets I have seen have been valveless. Many years ago (when Dynajets were in hobby shops for under $100) I do remember someone marketing a valveless propane pulse jet. I dont know if anyone ever got one to fly but do know they were also sold as jet demonstrator engines to high school shop teachers. If I remember right the thrust was actually quite low... maybe 2 or 3 pounds. Bob Furr

RE: First Control line Coroplast
We've been doing a lot of 1/2A coroplast cl planes here in Omaha. Check out the club's web pages. http://hometown.aol.com/hockypro/myhomepage/profile.html The full delta is nose heavy. The combat style wing with straight leading edge is tail heavy with a cox "product" engine. The clipped delta flys well and the kids love it as their "stealth bomber". Bob Furr

Is this the split crankcase one? If so I have one that I have not run. I bought it new several years back. Send an email to my screenname at aol.com and let me know what you would offer for it. I had planned to put it on ebay after Christmas. Bob Furr

RE: Sterling Ringmaster
Personal opinion here... just looking at the number of folks that have looked at this string... Estes is missing the boat by not ARFing the Ringmaster. The S1 would be nice but even the later one would sell as well or better than most of the other ARFs out there... too many of us old guys remember them fondly. Sterling claimed something like a million of the kits sold. Bob Furr

RE: what glue to use joining foam?
I have used urathane on foam for several years. The key is as little glue as possible. I spread it with one of those fake credit cards that come in the mail almost daily so that there is only a very thin coating on one side of the foam. The other I give a spritz of water to from a windex bottle and then I tape it all together overnite with masking tape. Clamping of some kind (the reason for the masking tape) is critical as the glue foams and foam has almost no strength at all. Bob Furr (CL Combat flyer so you can bet the planes I fly take a beating)

RE: Why is CL losing popularity?
For anyone interested I do a CL Combat newsletter that is email only and comes out quarterly. It is mosly about what is going on in the Great Plains area of the far midwest but has things of interest to anyone building and flying CL. Just send an email to robear1053@aol.com and I will put you on the mailing list. Bob Furr See ya in the circle!

Video on Cutting Foam Wings
Good To Go Models has produced a 2 hour video on cutting foam wings. It has advice on making your own bow, power sources, finding foam locally, making templates and a few lame jokes. Most of all it has step by step instructions on cutting and coring foam wings. The video was made in my shop so I have copies available for sale at $15 each including postage. If you are interested I take money orders (and ship next day) or personal checks (and ship once the check clears the bank). Overseas orders should email me first for additional postage.
