RE: AEROBIRD EXTREME MODS!
How have you fitted the motor? I was thinking about putting a brushless in one but can't figure how to mount the motor. Standard 480 replacement brushless way smaller than stock Extreme one?

RE: F-27 Stryker CG
You want it nose heavy, and up to a point, the more the better. Unless it's seriously front loaded - and I'm talking, what, 200g plus - it should fly fine. Tail heavy is the problem. Anyway, from my own experience if there's a bit of weight up front it's flight character is more predictable and stable - that's good. The plane will cut through the air more cleanly, will be buffetted less in strong breezes, and will experience improved glide when the power's off. You can use the battery to play around with weight distribution, but make sure the batt is secure as mine once slipped back, made the plane tail heavy in mid flight, and it came out of a loop and went into a flat spin. Never seen anything like it. Luckily it floated down flat all the way, so no damage, but I was lucky.

RE: E-SKY LAMA 2 THREAD
The Lama took a dive last night into a muddy field from about 40 ft. Been raining before so it was pretty boggy which broke the fall but I have now got wobble. Took it apart as much I could and think the main outer shaft is slightly bent. Firstly, does anyone know how to get the main shaft off - got the inside one out and all the blades off but the main shaft seemed to be stuck fast? Any advice on how to get it out really appreciated. Also, does anyone have any tips for getting it back to (almost) straight. I know this is a tricky job so any tips welcome. Thanks in advance!

RE: E-SKY LAMA 2 THREAD
Got a question for you all. I've just got a Lama on mode 2, throttle left, but I'm not sure it's doing what it's supposed to do. In the instructions it says for Mode 2 the left hand stick will also make the Lama lean left or right if you give (if left or right imput). It also says the right hand stick (if given left or right) will make the head change direction i.e. directional. But my Lama is doing the opposite. Give it some left on the left hand stick and head turns i.e. the heli spins on its axis (directional) and the right hand stick is the lean? I think the instructions are wrong actually, but I would like some clarification from anyone else with a Mode 2? These Chinese instructions are a bit of a joke in general.

RE: Build A Bullet Proof Stryker (Brushless Or Stock)
I tried setting up a fixed landing gear on my old Styker air frame last summer and it was a disaster. Crumped the landing and punched a hold through the rear housing near where the motor mount starts. Don't belive the foam can take the impact - or too many - and you have to get the wheel dead straigh or it'll crab on landing and flip. Like Tam says, this F27 is just not meant for this without massive, MASSIVE, modification, to the point where the finished product would no longer be an F27 - merely a vessel that flies. Still, I wish you well in your endeavours. Love to see a pic/video posted if you ever get it to slip the 'surly bonds of earth'. Isn't this weather a bit Tam - no Stryker action for months and barely a chance to fly my new heli - and that does need real calm weather.

It's a WFLY. Cheap copy built to mimic Futaba products and will work with other genuine Futaba products - or so says the lit. Movement I'm getting is aerilon on left as well as throttle. So, left stick forward is more power, but left and right movement is giving me flap mix for left and right - as it should be but on the wrong bloody stick. Right stick is only givingme pitch, and nothing when I put in left and right movement. I've read on the Internet somewhere that swapping aerilon (chan 1) with throttle (3) will sort it out. I'm at work at mo so can't check it out.

Cheers for the info. I'm having probs with my new trannie (off E-bay!!!) and the instructions aren't all there. It's a mode 2, throttle on left, but it's giving me elevator on right stick (which is what i want) but aerilon on the left (throttle side). I think I may need to have a play with the actual rx in the plane as I may have a few leds in the wrong port. Out of interest how do you servos go in your rx. At the mo I have Aerilon in channel 1, Elevator in Channel 2, and 3 is throttle.

Can anyone help me. I have just bought a mode 2 controller to replace an old Mode 2 Parkzone job. However, I am having probs getting the right sticks to work for my preferences. At the moment I have throttle on left, but also aileron ison the left, and elevator on right. I've got a triangle wing F27 so no rudder. What I want is all directional movement on the right stick. Do I need to swap any of the connectors around on the RX and if so which one?

Yetti, I know Tam will not agree with me on this, but you would get everything cheaper on Ebay. You'll be buying from Hong Kong but they are well worth using as they are delivered fast - usually four working days - and the stuff is pretty good for the knock down price. I'd get a 40 amp ESC, and a 1700Kv motor to start with - that's the set up I'm using. I have two Mystery outrunners and they both go like the clappers on a 7x5 with a 3S 20C lipo. All of that was off ebay - and you can now get a 3S 25C lipo with 40 amp burst for about £15 including p+p. If you got a branded one of those over here you'd be talking £60, prob £35 for a non-brand. My Mystery Lipo is nearly a year old and still going strong. Tam, I have a question for you. I take it you are using a mode 2 transmitter? If so, can you confirm only your throttle is on left, with rudder and elevator on the right stick?

RE: "Mystery" ESC
I have been using the Mystery brand for 18 months and have only ever had one ESC burnout on me. The Lipos have been given plenty of punihsment and are still going strong. The ESC which burnt out was a 30amp job that was given a hammering for about 12 months and survived two meajor crashes, including a fall of 200 ft when the motor ripped off its mounting and took the ESC and battery with it. So, I think it's fair to say Mystery, which are cheapos from China/Hong Kong, are well worth investing in. For the price you can't beat them, but I'd agree the instructions are poor, but if you have an inkling of other ESCs you'll triumph with a bit of trial and error.

RE: F27B
Hi Swift "I wondered if the stock ESC/RX in the F27B in combination with the EZ-ESC could handle all the XtraPowerTorque of a brushless/lipo conversion--up to 23 amps continuous discharge and 34 amp bursts using your 7x5 prop." Was that a question or a rhetorical? If the former, the answer is unclear from my experience. I used the stock guts with the EZ ESC converter for around 30 flights, of which a couple ended in spectacular crashes. The RX let go when I was doing some modifications - on the ground fortunately - so the bird escaped unscathed. If the stock gear couldn't handle the amps it certainly took a long time to give up. I think it was more a combination of normal wear and tear from low end radio gear, and a hard battering during more than a year of fairly heavy use. I got it originally with my first off the shelf F27 B in November 2006, flew that one stock for quite a while before getting a Lipo, then upgrading to a brushless/lipo set up a few months later. I think most people with any experience of Parkzone radio gear would agree it lasted quite well. Bear this in mind, I am already on my second 30 amp brushless ESC which burnt out on a 6x4 prop. On your other point, I meant 6x4 rather than 5x4 (see last sentence) and the reason I wanted to swap was cause I wanted better straight line. After experimenting the 7x5 is still the most fun for an all rounder - massive climb and good speed!

Maidened with my new set up on Sunday, and it flies!!! Bad point though is that I'm still getting to grips with my left hand throttle/ruddervator controls. Using my left hand feels weird, I feel like a ham-fisted newbie again. Wonder if my transmitter can be programmmed to have half throw action? At the moment it's incredibly twitchy and I had to make two forced landings yesterday, although thankfully no damage.

RE: F27B
Got my bird ready to go with all new radio gear after original Parkzone trash failed on me, thankfully during a pre-flight check. Servos went bonker, then made a strange clicking sound. After that radio gear was abs dead, even the motor wasn't working and it was a brand new ESC flown on only once and a new motor. Just been sorted out with a W-FLY RX and TX from an E-bayer in Hong Kong. Had wanted a computer RX but just couldn't afford £180 quid. The £40 bundle seems good, solid build quality, much more progressive throttle too than PZ stuff. Bought some cheap servos from a guy here in the UK and they are miles quicker too. So, all in new radio gear for less than £50. Hope to maiden this weekend weather permitting. Will let you know how it goes.

HI guys Need some advice. To cut a long story short, I need to buy complete new set of radio gear for my modded F27 B. I need TX, RX, and servos. Here goes: Q.1: Is it mini or micro servos I need to fit in the standard holes already cut in the frame. Q.2: When I am buying the TX and the RX, do I need to bear in mind that the F27 uses mixing for the elevons, or do all RX/TXs have this capability? Q.3: Anything else I need to think about? Thanks RD

Hi guys After some advice on brushless motors. Fried my ESC a few weeks back, and ended up buying a new 1700kv motor and same 30 amp esc off ebay. Now, I opened the new motor up and compared it to the old one, and the new one has more windings inside. I think there are 14 compared to nine in the old motor. The copper wire is thinner on the new one too. What performance difference will this have, and what other impacts may it have on other things like amp pull, rpm, etc. Thanks in advance. FYO I have two props, and 6x4, and a 7x5.

RE: Help Launching F27C Stryker
Sod that, give it 100% throttle and give a good throw forward and slightly up. I'd advise giving a lot of down trim until you get familiar with the plane, but don't forget to trim it back up as soon as you are airbourne - I'm talking about three seconds. I've always done it this way with no probs.

Someone will correect me if I am wrong, but if the esc is rated at 25amp continuous, and the set up is pulling only 21, then you should be OK??? I was using a similar set up this summer, and with a 7x5 you should get unlim vertical, as long as your bird's not much more than about 750g, and about 60 mph straight line, maybe a bit more.

I have seen one of these sites before where you put in all the info, click calculate, and it gives all the info. For the life of me I can't find it again.

Hi guys No one answered my prob last time. So I'll simplify the question. Which of the following is most likley to burn out if it's getting too many amps? A esc or a brushless motor? What tell tale signs are there a ESC has gone, and likewise a motor. I'm thinking black burn marks? ANY input would me gratefully received.

RE: F27 STRYKER -Way Past the Limits Part 6 -Go deeper in to the Dark Side...
Hi guys What's the more likely of the following two to fry first: a cheap 30 amp esc, getting around 30 amps, or a cheap brushless motor that can take up to 18 v but has only ever got 12. Hmm, sounds like I may have answered my own question, but to be honest, neither one looks like it has allowed the infamous 'smoke' out. I even took the motor apart on Saturday and although one of the magnets has a tiny chip out of a corner piece, and I mean tiny, it looked fine, and the copper windings weren't loose or blackened in any way. I have resolded all the wires in my bird but there's still no power (battery is fine as power led still blinks and servos are working). When I plug battery in the servos start up, but I don't get the little tune I used to get which tells everything is dandy with the ESC/motor. Does this help with diagnosis?

RE: F27 STRYKER -Way Past the Limits Part 6 -Go deeper in to the Dark Side...
Hi people. Haven't been flying for a few weeks and took the opportunity of windless conditions and blue skies yesterday to get some airtime. Been up about five minutes when the motor cut, like it was auto cut off. Glided in no probs, but then discovered motor was not working properly. Every time I powered up, even after charging the battery, the motor jittered for about five seconds, then cut completely. The way I see it is there are three possibilities: 1. the battery is done in - need to check on a voltmeter but need to borrow my dads to do this. 2. the ESC has fried. 3. The motor is fried. I am personally thinking that it could be the ESC, although it doesn’t look or smell cooked visibly? I can’t see it being the motor as it can take up to 18 v but it’s only ever been run on 11.1 3S. Might be the batt but I know juice is going as when I power up the light on my radio gear winks quickly, indicating power’s on full, but the prop just jitters and tries to spin but then cuts. Hence, must be the ESC? What do you think?

RE: F27B
Maidened last night - and rx prob fixed! Was the lead all the time. Never mind, I suppose resoldering all the wires can't hurt every now and again, like an MOT and serivce! Gave good hard thrown and up she went, but had to have trim lever all the way down as she was wanting to point groundwards. Brought her down and adjusted flaps. Second time she went up beautifully. Felt much more twitchy than the old bird though. Have made new fins out of thick card, which weigh about 50g, so weight is now down to the same as the old bird. Speed wise about the same, but she glides much better aqnd doesn't lose height as fast. Think this down to a much cleaner airframe. Incidentally Tam, dug a dirty great screw out of the nose just liek you said. Why is that in there? Must have weighed 10g at least. Tonight I am going to grind down a 7x4 prop to a 5x4 - am thinking this will kill unlimited vertical but should get me an an extra 10 mph straight line.

Hi Has anyone had any experience of damaged aerial on their RX. About a third of the wire/lead on mine broke off a couple of days back, and even though I resoldered it on, the range is giving me problems. Maximum range was about 60 metres. I resoldered it on last night but have yet to do range check. Has anyone else had this kind of issue before, and does anyone have any tips on hot to reattach the aerial to make a 'good' connection. RE: F27B
Hi Tam Thanks for the reply and the offer of free RX, but I think I got the problem nailed last night. Lovely evening with just a gentle breeze so decided to go for broke and give it a whirl. Launched and away she flew, but dipping much more than my old bird - which always wanted to climb at the best of times. Anyway, she was about 70yards away and climbing when she just cut again. Glides down nicely, no harm done. Walk over with the transmitter and it's good to go again. So, set throttle to 1/4 so prop is spinning gently and walk away (with plane) leaving rx on the floor. Get about 70 yards and it cuts. Put the plane higher, motor comes back on. Put it lower, motor cuts. Right, def a radio/reciever prob! Go back to house and first thing I do is check the aerial wire - which has broken about 1/3 of the way from the end. This HAS to be the prob. Have now resoldered back on a longer piece of wire. Am praying this will have fixed the prob. Will do a range test tonight. Fingers crossed. Will report back tomorrow.

RE: F27B
Hi TamPopo I've tried using just two magnets on the nose cone before and ended up losing a cone in a field full of grass. I had sunk and glued two nails into the cone, and had just two magnets on the aactual main body. Was part way through an inverted loop when the cone broke free. Think with modded Stykers four magnets are essential on the cone area, although agree a bit of beer can would work fin on the hatch area where there's less 'g' effect. Anyway, back to business. Finished my new build plane on Friday night - see pics of it hanging in my garage. I am very proud of it. The bad news is the things weighs 740g - that's 40 g more than my old one. The rear stabs will have to go as they are 86 g alone. Balsa here I come. Anyay, went to maiden it on Saturday and discovered I had a problem. The plane kept losing power after being given WOT for a couple of seconds. Nothing worked. The batt connections were good as the servos were glitching like mad - as if the reciever was switched off (but it wasn't). Gave all the wires a tug and power returned. Went to launch again, and same thing happened. At this point I gave up. No point in keeping on trying. Couldn't see anything wrong after thorough examination, but ended up resoldering the power leads and the battery plugs to the deans connectors, and put fresh batts on the controller. Plugged it back in, and for about 10 seconds there was no power, except the glitching servo, then suddenly all back to normal. Have disconnected and replugged several times now, plus having pulled all the wires at the same time, it is still fine. I have even reprogrammed the ESC. It seems to be OK, but my major concern is that something was wrong with it, and although it's fine now, it could happen again and that could mean me losing a brand new build on its maiden. Do I risk it or not? It may be helpful for people to know I am using the original Parkzone radio gear, and have purchased a EZ ESC converter from a guy in the States, so my radio set up is a little different to most darksider's. Personally, I think this could be a radio/receiver prob. Anyone have any ideas?
