RE: Falcon 40 (Exceed heli) Forum
And yes, I'm still flying my original Falcon 40 from way back when. Its my only Heli that flies as all my others are in some sort of semi-crash recovery/repair. I hate my glow powered helis to be Honest. Electric power is so much cleaner and more reliable. Now if they could invent a way to eliminate that dreaded pilot error!!!!!! YOW!!!

Hey Robo, please could you give me some advice, thanks! Yes Hullaballoo, Replacing the motor controller mosfets on the Exceed 4-in-1 board is not an easy task, but you can do it. I use a 12 Watt pencil tip Weller (brand) iron, and a very fine gage solder as well. I then use plenty of light and a magnifying visor to see whats going on. I can't solder for jack if I can't see what I'm doing. Be patient, practice on an old circuit board from a roasted VCR or TV. Good luck, Robo

Mississippi Heli Fly-In - Hattiesburg Area
We will be having our 1st annual fly-in for Heli's only at our club field located in Lamar County, near Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Its a 2-day event. Oct. 4th and 5th Landing fee is $20.00 Our club has a few more heli pilots and so we finally decided to expand our calender and add a Heli event this Fall. Sponsor is: Pinebelt RC Club http://www.pinebeltrc.com/PinebeltNew/Welcome.html Camping for tents and self contained RVs will be available, no hook-ups available however, we will have porta pottys on site. There should be several generators as well as 12Volt DC available for charger use. There will be food and prizes and some great fellowship with some local and non-local pilots. There will be a reasonably large cash prize for the Autorotation contest. $300 Century Expert, Bill Meador (Our Hero!!) will be on site as well as some other top notch visiting pilots from neighboring states. Might be a good chance to get some coaching/set-up help with your large gasser if ya' know what I mean... The event is open to any pilots with an active AMA member status (AMA club field). Bring what you have, be it Gas, Glow, or Electric powered. PM me if you need a detailed map. Hope you can make it. Robo

Can anyone tell me where in this thread is any useful info about the Gryo Switch on the ESKY transmitter. I could not find any info in the users manual with regard to what the switch does and where it needs to be positioned? I am flying a stock King 2 with the El-cheapo RTF ESKY gyro at this point. I'm guessing its a switch for using a fancier aftermarket gyro (like a FUT 401) with ability to switch from rate to HH modes from the Tx. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks...
ORIGINAL: broggyr Well I sure did it this time. I got my replacement MOSFETs today, and in my attempt to repair my board, I screwed up 2 traces on my board - I now no longer have a place to solder one lead of the new MOSFET. Does anyone have a board they've already replaced that they don't want anymore?
Ok, lets try to get you back in the air. 1st, how many watts is the iron you are using? Too much heat will melt the glue that holds the thin copper foil (trace) to the fiberglass surface of the circuit board. I use a Weller SP-12 as its got a fine pointed tip and its only 12 watts, adequate for small stuff. 2nd. you can still revive your damaged board by making a new trace out of a small solid copper wire. I've repaired traces with old household telephone cable by removing all the insulation (plastic) and soldering it from point to point on the circuit board as needed. It wasn't pretty, but it did work. Hey, your board is already trashed, whats it gonna hurt to give it a try I say!!!! Give it a shot and be patient. Best of luck to ya', Robo

RE: Falcon 40 (Exceed heli) Forum
ORIGINAL: Short Flight This may not be appropriate for this forum, but last week there was some discussion on making the jump from FP to 3D flight. Most responses indficated that they would probalby go there eventually once 'mastering' FP flight. I believe it was Robo a few months ago who was moving up to a Trex. Robo - can you give us a brief narrative regarding your jump? Was wondering what were the main differences (programming functions, added controls, etc.) and the toughest hurdles to overcome with variable pitch rotors. And for the budget conscious, aside from the cost of the equipment, are operating (crashing) costs much higher? Anyone else chime in on the 'next step'?
OK, here's my take on moving up to a full feature collective 6-channel heli like a Trex-450 from a beginner machine like the Falcon 40. My Trex sat in the box forever as there were a 2 issues keeping it grounded and they were: 1. Pilot confidence. I did not want to try to fly the Trex until I could fly the Falcon in all directions with no issues. The biggest test fro me was low figure 8's and a nose in landing approach. Once mastered those I was pretty confident. One thing that actually helped was trying to fly the falcon in a bit of a breeze. The heli was hard to control and it forced me to react to some strange conditions. That sharpened my pilot reflexes. 2. Radio programming. This kicked my butt!!!! Just getting the gyro dialed in took almost 3 weeks !!!! I have no heli buddies to call upon in town so I was on my own 100%. The only thing that saved me was I went to the HELIFREAK site and downoaded all the "Finless" videos for setups specifically for the Trex. Those videos are great and I recommend them to anybody moving up to a 6-ch bird. Without those videos, I'd still be on the ground!!!!! So, after getting the radio programming dialed in I did the normal thing and hovered a while in one spot. Then I got brave, took off the training gear and tried out some forward flight. I had no problems at all other than the near violent shaking of my knees as I was rather nervous. The mainrotor rpm on the Trex is so much faster than the Falcon, its kinda scary at first. As far as crash repairs go, are you ready for this???????????? I can't tell you as I have not crashed (YET!!!!!) So something must be right ? The best thing I'd recommend is really learn to control the Falcon before you try to move up to a fancier machine, don't get in a rush as they will always be making and selling electric helis as far as I know. Good luck to all and PM me if you need to, I'd be happy to help. Robo (aka Bruce)
ORIGINAL: Short Flight
ORIGINAL: Bones27 Short Flight, I have had very good luck with the Century motors. Did you break the motor in and are you using a heat sink with the sticker removed from the motor and heat sink grease between the motor and heat sink? I think these things are key to long motor life. I also let the motor cool about 20 minutes between flights.
Still waiting on the heat sinks which were ordered separately.
In a pinch I've made heat sinks out of a soda can. Not very pretty but effective enough until my fancy one came in. I cut a strip off a can about 1.2 inches long and 3.5 inches long and wrapped it around the can while using the "springy-ness" of the thin aluminum to hold it in place. Any extra that overlapped when wrapped around I bent out like wings to catch rotor downwash and aid cooling.

Have'nt even touched my Falcon 40 in ages, but do fly the Trex as often as possible. Flew in a wind so strong the other day that the tail rotor lost synch w/ the gyro and heli did some wild stuff till I regained control. All those hours training on my trusty Falcon 40 have been paying off. Still only flying inverted on the sim as I am just a big chicken after all (Cluck ...Cluck) Changed jobs recently, and so I lost my indoor flying area that I used to practice in. It was a huge auditorium that was an awesome place to learn to fly a small 4-ch heli. So its pretty much outside flying only unless I fire up the rat-shack havoc heli for those kitchen bar landing drills!!!! Have found a new hobby thats about as addictive as R/C helis but a wee bit more physically demanding and thats running around on a paved grand prix type course on a 100cc 2-stroke racing go kart. Got started with a used kart and theres a group of us that now race together. Ive spent less than $5.00 on kart repairs since July 2007 !!! The G's in the turns are brutal and I'm pretty beat up when I wake up for work Monday morning. I think I like the smell of my exhaust as much as turning laps !!! I run a 16:1 ratio of fuel/oil with racing castor oil as the lubricant. Its a unique odor for sure.
ORIGINAL: chuck101 Hi Folks: I'm new here. I have been reading the GREAT posts here for nearly a week till 3am LOL, and I must say that I cannot wait till Friday when I order my own Falcon 40.See, I did the same as some others did here.. Cpl months ago, I ordered a 2 channel Walkera Dragonfly. Like most ppl, I grew tired of it in 2 days..but for$28 I was hooked on a hobby I'd wanted to try since my days in the Air Force in the 70's. And, I got that bird up to well over 100 ft in the air, and brought it down again. in ONE piece LOL..Anyway, about a month ago I figured I'd jump ahead of the game and I then ordered a 6 channel Exceed Eagle 50. Crashing, crashing, and more crashing. Now it has been sitting waiting for the flimsy rotor head parts and new blades (third set). Then I came across this Forum.. Started reading and I knew there was no other thing for Me to do but order a Falcon 40, then wait and see whether I could learn the Falcon 40 really well, then try to keep the Eagle 50, or sell it and try to cut my losses..According to the fun you can have with the 40, I'll probably do the latter. Sell the 50, take that money and upgrade the 40.. But anyway, that is in the future. For now, I cannot wait to get one like I said.. Thanks to everybody for the great posts here, great links etc etc. i have learned a TON in just a few days and already feel that this forum will drastically cut my learning curve by just the tricks and "how to's" I've learned here.. Thanks again, Chuck Alexander
Yeah Chuck, I started this thread after I threw in the towel on my Walkera 22E which is the same as the Eagle 50 you've had such a hard time with. The rotor speeds on those 6 channel helis just help shred the thing to bits in what seems like a minor mishap. I lost count on how many times I dug in the Falcon with zero repairs needed. Stick with it and you'll do fine. There are some really great pilots here who have an amazing dedication to helping others. In fact, I can't seem to recall anyone coming close to flaming anybody here after all this time. You won't see that on any Trex 450 forum I can promise you that. Best of luck to you. Robo

Hey everyone, its Robo. I still read this thread often and see its still quite active. I havent flown a Falcon 40 in ages but I do fly my Trex 450 almost every day and even on days with 15mph winds. I can't say enough about how well the Falcon prepared me for flying a more complicated machine. I guess I have around 300 flights so far without an incident. Still havent flipped it over to inverted yet and am too big a chicken to try any 3D stuff like flips or rolls, but I have been practicing auto-rotations and those are really a lot of fun. You beginners stick with it and you'll make progress. I learned a lot about my flying orientation skills putting around on my trusty Falcon 40. Learned a lot about the heartache of crashing and figuring out all sorts of repairs as well. Best of luck to everyone out there and HAPPY THANKSGIVING too... As always, Robo

RE: downgrade from 22e to ?
I had the same problem as you do. I got a good deal on eBay for a new 22E and all I did was crash and repair that thing all the time. I even had some time on the simulator before attempting to fly the 22E. I finally took a step back and purchased a Falcon 40 which is a fixed pitch 4 channel heli. For me it was a better trainer as the rotor did not spin as fast and the heli did not beat itself to shreds on the slightest piloting error. The Falcon is not a perfect heli by far, but it did allow me to improve my piloting skills significantly. I now fly a nicely equipped electric Trex450. In fact today, I flew in a steady 15-20mph wind with no problems at all. I learned how to hover nose-in on the Falcon and had no problems flying a 6 channel heli later on. I was very close to giving up when I was trying to learn on the 22E. I finally put my 22E together and sold it in running condition. I was glad to be rid of it as it was also burning up motors and causing even more crashes. Hope you get back in the air soon. Oh, and I used to live 100 miles away from you on the island of St.Croix. I've been to San Juan twice and recall there were some nice RC hobby shops there way back when.

RE: Hextronik EDF system any good ?
I bought the two smallest EDF units they sell, hard to beat the price and didn't get ripped off as the items arrived on time. Smaller Fan draws 29 amps with a 3-S Lipo pushing it. Put out more thrust than my scale could measure !!! The little booger really screams. My only observation was the gap between the impeller blades and the fan duct was about 4mm which probably effects efficiency in my opinion. Again, for my budget and my scratch built design, its better than I anticipated. In fact all my new GWS brushed units are going to end up on ebay soon. Waiting on some batteries from the same vendor, will see how they hold up.

Mrasmm is right, stay with a 2-S LiPo. I've been flying a Falcon 40 for over a year with a 2-S(7.4V) pack with zero problems and plenty of power and flight duration. Shop around and try to find the lightest 1250-1600mAh pack out there and you'll be fine. You get to a point with pack weight where you can end up using more current to haul around a bigger pack that can push more current. Hope it helps, Robo

RE: Falcon 40 (Exceed heli) Forum
I've been following the discussion on the charger situation and heres my $.02 0n it. Most factory provided chargers do a basic job of charging but don't do a good job of protection from overcharging. Did you happen to feel the pack at the end of the 65 minute charge time? If it was blazing HOT you may have damaged the pack for good. I ditched all my chargers that were included with my ARF helis and bought a smart charger that monitors pack voltage and tops off my NiMh packs without cooking them. In fact I use the same charger for my Falcon 40 green packs as I do with my beefyand mean 3300mAh R/C car packs. Of course you can switch to a Lipo pack (2-S for a 7.4 V rating) for power and get more flight times as well. You'll need to decide how you plan to go as you can't use a NiMh charger on a LiPo pack you buy later on down the road. Thats a big NO-NO!!! Sounds like some of you are doing good with the flying too. Stick with it, when you advance to some simple forward flight you'll be glad you stuck with it through all those training snafus... Best of luck to all those Falcon 40 pilots out there, Robo [:D]

I saw a fellow club member fly one of these this past weekend at our field. The thing flew great with a wide performance envelope. Plenty of thrust and excellent slow speed handling too. Hand launches were a breeze and the model looks pretty good as the underbelly inlet hides all the clutter of radio and Lipo you see hanging under other foamie jet models. Only complaint I had was the grey color scheme he picked was hard on the ole' eyes late in the day.

RE: Falcon 40 (Exceed heli) Forum
So I had a little mishap with my Falcon 40 yesterday. Plugged in the main battery pack and the heli took off on its own with the throttle cut!!!! Just a one in a million glitch I suppose. Funny thing is, it hovered great on its own then I grabbed the transmiiter and moved the throttle back and forth till I killed the power to the motor. Heli landed hard but no damage except for the paddles were knocked out of level. For kicks I tried to take off anyhow with the out-of-whack paddles and the heli was absolutely uncontrollable and dumped over to the left regardless of stick inputs. Its amazing how much the flybar paddles effect flight performance, so be sure and make sure both paddles are level with the landing skids(horizon) before looking elsewhere for a control problem. Hope all you Falcon 40 pilots are doing well and making progress with those skills. As always, Robo
