RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hey Sr Tele: If you mail the fitting to me @ Charlie Erb 65 Willock Road Fredericktown, PA 15333. I will send you a drill and the correct metric tap. I know there should be one in my machine shop. Will measure it with my metric pitch gages. I do a bunch of metric work. Sure like your idea for the positive even fuel pressure to the carb. Regards, Rockin Daddy

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hey SrTele: I have an old Tartan single glow motor that I am converting to ignition. I plan to run it on methanol first and see how it runs on gasoline. Bought some E-85 fuel at a special gas station. Regular chain saw oil does not mix with it, however castor oil and Klotz oil does. Don't believe it is the answer as this ethanol E-85 is over $3 a gal. Methanol is about $2/ gal in bulk. E-85 has Highway tax on it adding to the expense. Have a Saito 270 twin that I plan to convert to ignition. Bought the twin ignition set-up for it already. Will try it on methanol and see how it runs on chainsaw mix too! Thanks for the recomendations.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Sure would have been great to have known Bill Robinson. I read through his notes and am amaised to the wealth of knowledge this brillant man left for us Saito lovers. When I have a problem, I read through Bill's notes. I have a Carl Goldberg Super Chipmunk I usually fly a couple times a week out of the enclosed trailer I keep at our fly field. This Chipper has a 91 Saito on it. I don't like to use my Sullivan Dynatron on it but prefer to hand start it with the rubber end of a big nut driver. When cold starting; I have to turn it clockwise and it usually always backfires and runs counterclockwise the way it is supposed to run. However the second flight after refueling, requires that I flip it counterclockwise when the motor is still warm. It will continue to run just fine. I mix my own fuel and usually use 8~10% Nitro, 18% oil(9% Klotz and 9% castor). I mix my own fuel for less than $8 a gallon! It is a bit more than my ignition gasoline motors as I use 100 octane Aviation gas purchased at the local airport. Its $5.50 a gallon plus the chainsaw oil I have to add. Thought about converting my Saito 270 twin to ignition. I am told they run cleaner and use less fuel on a spark than a glow plug burning methanol-oil mix. Gas is dirty and ash buildup occurs in time. Any long term gas-ignition Saito runners out there with a few comments?

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hey Orthobird: The threads on your Saito can be tapped out to a slightly larger size. I have found that I can only take the threads out to a larger size only one time as the boss becomes too thin. You will have to make an oversize bushing or nut to thread into the new oversize threads also. I like all my Saito motors from the little 45 my 90 and 270 twins and my 325 radial. What little marvel motors they are. RockinDaddy

RE: New Giant GP Super Sportster!!!!!
My Giant GP Super Sportster flys great with an old Fugi 32 and an 18-10 prop. The balance is perfect! It hand starts easy. The Brinelli 40 will rip it and will most likely be a good choice. Should have alot of vertical. My Fugi 32 is a magneto motor, and a bit heavy by todays standards. An electronic solid state battery ignition motor will be less weight and give better performance. The plane is a "cupcake" at low speed too! I would like to build a full size Super Sporster! What a great plane it would be!

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Might be able to use the original glow carb as they deliver adequate Methanol fuel. The Walbro is a pumper gas carb. Usually the jets are not large enough for alcohol. The Saito 80 on diesel mix is cool! (35% kerosene, 35% ether, 15% castor, 15% Klotz) If you buy John Deere spray ether in a can and vent the cans with an ice pick, you can drain the ether. Put em' in the freezer before you vent them. You loose less ether. The John Deere has a higher percentage of ethyl ether than the cheaper stuff. If you use the cheaper starting fluid; you will just have to add a little bit more to your mix. I mix my own diesel fuel for my small diesels. Boy is it messy!!! The ether eats any covering off the airframe. You have to spray clear enamel on the seams as the ether attacks the covering adhesive.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hey Oberstleutenant: You can get your Folker DVII to run cooler if you carefully install a fine mesh screen in the front area of your cowl. I have some fine industrial grade stainless mesh screen that looks like the original grills. I will send you a few small pieces if you want. What ever fits in a mailing envelope. This if installed in the front of your cowl area; it will not add much weight to the front of your D VII and will allow plenty of air to cool your Saito motor. I epoxied some in my Junkers fighter cowl that kept my Saito 65 cool. Regards, RockinDaddy

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
SrTelemaster: The E85 idea is a great one! I used to mix alot of fuel years ago. Coming back from boat races through Indianapolis, I would stop and pick up a 55 gal barrel of Klotz oil. Used to race C class outboard on alky. Still have plenty of Klotz oil. For model airplane fuel I would mix: 7 gal of Methanol, 1 gal of Nitromethane, 1 gal of Klotz and 1 gal of castor. Thats 10 % Nitro and 20% oil. I still use that mix for my glow motors. But I sure like your idea of using E85 ! I believe it is cheaper than regular gasloine. My first conversion will be on an old Tartan single. I'll try the E85. Many thanks, RockinDaddy

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hey Hob: You can run your stock Saito 80 on Kerosene, castor/Klotz, and ether? I have a couple of Russian .15 Diesels and a PAW .35 that run on Kerosene, castor/Klotz, and ethyl ether mix but never heard of a Saito running on it. Shed a little light on it if you would. There is no compression counter piston on a Saito 4cycle to increase the compression for initial starting. Regards, RockinDaddy

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
SrTelle: Never thought of using E-85 for the ignition conversion on the Saito 270. Do you have to add Nitromethane? Was figuring on running a 30:1 chainsaw oil. Will it mix with the E-85 ? Will still adapt the Walbro carb to the glow fuel manifold. Thanks much for your input. Best regards, RockinDaddy

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hey GaGeeBee: I like the sound of Harleys. Have five of them. Starting with a 47' Knucklehead, 60 Pan, 74' Sportster, 95' Softail Custom, and an 04' Ultra. But my Texas American Iron Horse "Judge" has an S&S 100 cu in twin in it that is a great ride an sounds like any Harley. The Japs tried to duplicate the "potatoe-potatoe-potatoe" sound of the Harley and ended up with a fart-in-the-bathtub sound. The Saito radial sounds the best!!!! I bought a 325 Saito and will use Henry Hafke's Gee Bee Y plans and scale em up or try it on a Wedell-Williams racer I built many years ago. The Zenoah gas motor worked great but the Saito radial has the sound!!! One of these days I'll have a Moki radial!

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hey SrTelemaster: Thanks for the info on converting my Saito 270 twin to gasoline. I did not take into acount the fact that I may get more ash deposits with gas over methanol. Plus the 15% reduction in hp! When you adapt a Walbro gas pumper carb, you have to place a small spring behind the pumper diaphram to work the pump action of the Walbro carb. Will have to reasearch that !!

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Saito motors are little gems! Have at least a dozen of them. Wonder if anyone out there has any experience with the FG series that burns gasoline?? Been mixing my own glow fuel for many years. I still can make up glow fuel w/ 12% nitro for less than $8 a gallon. Am in the process of converting an old 270 twin to gas. I buy 100 octane aviation gas at my local airfield. At $5.20 a gallon, it has no ethanol and has stabilizers and tetra-ethel lead. Works great in my ignition gas motors. Figure it will be ok for a converted Saito. Making up a manifold adapter to mount a Walbro WA 11mm bore carb. Plan on a Saito radial one of these days. My Harleys and Saitos both sound great! How do I join Club Saito?

There is an old timer in our club that is an excellent flyer. One of the younger RC guys asked him a question while we were setting up our planes. The old timer's response was: "I have built and flown and wrecked every model airplane in the Tower Catalog learning how to be a good pilot" !!!!!!!

RE: Hobby king customer service
Hobby King!!!!! I sent them an Western Union Wire of $500 ! They held my money for 8 months. 30 or so e-mails and they could not find record of payment. Finally they assigned someone to look into my complaint. By then they were all sold out of some of the items I had ordered. So I checked their stock on line and asked them to make a few substitutions. That took another 2-months. Never send a Western Union Wire. They will loose it!! I will never order from China again!! Maybe I will order from their warehouse here in the states. Its ashame we have to buy all this China junk. I remember buying good quality balsa kits, propellers, engines & radios, produced here in the states. Still use a couple of ACE RC Micro Pro 8000 computer transmitters converted to 2.4 ghg, made in USA. No plastic cases! Real metal boxes!!! Easy to program and use!! RD

RE: Hobby king customer service
Dear Matadco: Please try to back the idle screw out on your ASP 61 4-cycle motor until the top of the idle adjustment screw is about flush with the throttle barrel surface. Backing the idle screw out will allow very little fuel to enter the carb and to the motor. I believe the Saito's are designed the same. I have a bunch of Saitos and a few ASP motors. Set your high speed needle out about 3 turns. The motor should run to where you can use it. If you want it to run really well; set your high speed needle so your engine reaches peak RPM's. Use a tach to check your high end RPM's. Turn your high speed needle out until you see a 200 RPM drop. The motor should have good throttle response and idle. If you have a poor idle; try turning the idle screw in a 1/4 turn. This will enrich the motor and improve the idle. If the idle is still lean; turn the idle screw in another 1/4 turn. Your motor should idle OK. Retune the high speed needle with the tach for maximum RPM's and again screw the high speed needle out until you have a 200 RPM drop. At this point you will be running your engine so it will be getting adequate oil lubrication. The idle screw works opposite of the high speed needle. The engine is enriched as you turn the high speed needle out. The idle screw enriches the motor as you turn the little adjustment screw in! If this tune method fails: You may have a defective carb. Regards, RD

My Quadra 52 starts on one flip all the time with the spring starter. Finger over the carb; turn the prop 5 turns, hit the ignition switch, set the thottle at 1/4, wind her up and let the prop turn over! I like 3W and Zenoah for great quality and durability. RE: Hobby King - Dispicable Service
Hobby King has now become known at out club as "Hong Kong Fooey". Their service really sucks!!! Back in May I sent them a Western Union Money Order for an order of $508 worth of merchandise. I sent $540 so there would be a few extra dollars as they never have everything in stock when you order it. They are always out of stock on many items. To date I have gotten many BS e-mails and excuses why they have not shipped my order over 8 months old!!! I keep advising them to substitute several items and get the order on the "slow-boat"!!! Still no shipping confirmation!!! What do you have to do?? Go to the State Department?? I don't think I will ever order anything from this overseas hobby company again. Why has our modeling come down to cheap Chinese imports?? No one builds anymore. So many of wonderful American hobby manufacturers have discontinued their companies. Throughly Disgusted and dissapointed, The Rockindaddy

RE: best way to train new pilots
20 years ago a glider or a SIG Senior Kadet or the Telemaster was the best way to teach a kid or a candidate to fly. My friend who flew 737's for a living thought he did not need a trainer. He crashed more 4 channel planes that he got very discouraged and gave it up! He would not listen and took training rc instructions as useless! He was used to sitting in a plane and flying. When the rc plane was flying at him, he was always disoriented. He just could not get his orientation! Now I have had more success teaching new rc pilots to fly these days by using the Horizon Hobby's foam Super Cub. This little foamy is so easy and forgiving to fly. It really builds confidence and allows a novice to gain orientation. No glow fuel to mess with. No carburator to tune. Just plug the Lipo battery in and fly for 5~ 10 minutes on a 1300 ma 3 cell battery. Winds have to be very light. The only criticism of the Horizon Hobby Super Cub is the proprietary components they use in the construction: The transmitter and receiver are on a strange surface channel, the servos are a wierd 4-wire servo, the FACT device is useless (this is the device that sees the sky and the ground and makes in flight corrections). This little trainer would be greatly improved if they put the radio gear on an inexpensive 2.4 Ghz combo four channel transmitter and receiver, went to a standard 3-wire micro servo, and they eliminated the FACT devices. They could reduce the cost of the whole rig. I converted several of the 3 channel Super Cubs to 4 channel by flatening the wing and cutting in ailerons and mounting micro servos in the wings. But you have to junk the wierd 4-wire servos and replace the transmitter and receiver. If they made their basic trainer cheaper, I guarantee the novice pilots that solo with the Super Cub will buy their next four channel trainer from Horizon Hobbies. The new pilot would already have a four channel transmitter. Their next plane would only require a receiver. The novice could then fly their next step-up plane with a transmitter they are familiar with. It would be good for business! If flying rc planes was so easy, every 12~17 year old kid would have one and be up in the air flying on their own! It is not easy unless there is a mentor guiding the new flyers along.

RE: disposing of nitro fuel?
Old methanol-nitro fuel works in your gasoline tank of your car or truck. Often times we experience water in our fuel tanks. We go to the auto parts store and purchase "dry gas" to rid our fuel tanks of the moisture we may have acquired at our local gas station or in the northern climates; the heating and cooling causes the air vapor in our fuel tanks to "sweat" and deposit a very small amount of water in the bottom of our car's fuel tank. Eventually, this water accumulation can become a problem. "Dry-gas" is methanol in a little bottle that the auto parts stores charge alot of money for. Old model airplane methanol fuel even with nitromethane and castor oil/synthetic oil in it works great for removing any accumulation of water in a fuel tank. The oil doesn't seem to foul the spark plugs and does a great job of cleaning the fuel injection system. My wife's DTS Cadilac Deville was running a little rough a couple of years ago. A pint of old airplane glow fuel fixed it right up! If you have poison ivy growing around the yard; old fuel takes care of it in a couple of days.

RE: Corona RP4S1 Synthesized Receiver
The Corona receivers I bought all seem to work great. I used them on cheap little short-range planes. The instructions are not very clear. But I was able to get them to bind to my transmitter. If you need the 4th channel, you must use a "Y" harness so you can power the unit and utilize channel. Be careful of reversing the plugs as you can cook the receiver. Rockin' Daddy
