RE: Modifying Stabilizer Incidence
Tony that's how I was taught. Gary
ORIGINAL: tony0707 Hi Put the plane in a foam plane cradel Put a level on the sab and MAKE the stab read ZERO on the level - (dead center on the bubble)-shim it so it stays there Now put your incidence meter on the wing (radio on if you have the meter placed on the ailerons ) The reading you get on the meter will be your wing incidence ( always with regard to the stab that is ZERO ) In this case the meter sb reading 2.5 degrees positive if correct That means the wing sb 2.5 degrees higher at the leading edge than the trailing edge You need to adjust the wing seat as needed to have the wing at 2.5 degrees positive location if it is not there already Be sure to use your means of fastening you wing downthe incidence must be the same after all is tightened This is a very good time to check your wing to be sure it is centered on the fuse I use a piece of nylon fishing line with knots in it Example :place one end of the nylon line at the end of the aileron (closest to the wing tip ) and extend it to the joint between the stab an rubberdo the same thing to the other side of the wing When both lenghts of line are equal the wing is centered put a mark on the fuse so you can always have the wing square to the plane every time you install the wing on the plane Building and flying more than most for 26 years This sb the info you need to know and how to get there REGARDS TONY
RE: MDS 2.18
Love my MDS 68's I have three. First came on a 60 size Twist that I got used from from my LHS. When I found out about the reputation of the MDS I was a little upset with the shop owner. Once I got it running and tuned properly it is one of my best running 2 cycle glow engine, by the way always run only 5% nitro. My first one had the latest carb from MDS which helped alot. Got two from Grey Beard one was complete and runs fine. The second was thrown in for parts as it did not have a carb or mufler and was gunked up so much it would not turn over. I cleaned it up and scrounged around and found a Super Tiger 40 carb from my parts bin and muffler located at local swap meet,it runs good also although it has not been on a plane yet. I do think the MDS line was NOT built to consistent standards and suffered some design problems especially carb related but there are some very good engines wearing the MDS brand. My feeling is if they have lasted this long without being blown up or thrown out they have a good chance of being a decent motor. Gary

RE: noisey airframe?
Scott I also have an Avonds F 15 powered by an Estart AMT Peggy which normally puts out about 35 lbs thrust but feels like its only about 24/25 when in the air in this airframe. There is a definite loss of thrust which I can only put down to a mismatched engine pipe combo. I think the bifurcated pipe I have was designed for about 21 lbs thrust . It flys well but the payoff is in the sound in the air, Horrendous but Luverly if you like that sort of thing. Its not too bad on the ground but seems to change when up and going. Its not for the average club field if you want to keep your friends!!. Sorry no answers but good luck with yours. Regards, Paul.

RE: Silver Soldering for Dummies (HELP)
One vital tip where silver soldering is concerned. Do not sand the parts to be joined. FILE them clean with a metal file. This is the way the pros do it. I know because an old pro taught me. (Thanks Jem, r.i.p.). Paul.

RE: Russian Elfin 149 ABC Repro
William, I would try one more thing if all the good advice you have been given here does not work for you. I had a similar problem with a chinese diesel. After countless flicks and attempts with an electric starter I fitted a HUGE heavy propellor and added more ether to the fuel. Flick starting then worked!! Short runs then gradually resulted in longer ones until I could slowly reduce the propellor sizes. Worth a try before you bin it. Regards. Paul.

RE: Off subject about Echo gas chain saw engine
I played with it some more after my post and found that if I didn't choke it, it started, but pretty short test about 5-6 starts and restarts all worked. The reason I chocked it was before I rebuilt the carb, it had problems drawing fuel so always had to choke apparently with new carb kit it will not be necessary when hot. Thanks for all your input. Off subject about Echo gas chain saw engine
I have an Echo chain saw that will start when cold very easily but when hot it is almost impossible to start. I have done the following: Rebuilt the carb Checked spark plug both when cold and just after running when hot to verify ignition is not breaking down. Has very strong blue spark. Has good compression both hot and cold Have tried starting fluid with no start Have added oil to fuel to insure it was not partially siezing. Any ideas would be appreciated. Gary

Mike, if you deploy the canards in a turn the short lived nose up effect is disguised, same goes for the flap. Learned this tip from Bennie in AMT years ago. Paul.

RE: Dle 30 dies in takeoff
Hello, I have solved the problem by letting the carb draw air from inside the fuselage! The photos attached show how simply I did this by using dense foam rubber around the firewall hole.
Dinorc, My concern is that the foam is acting as a partial choke and this indicates to me that you may have been too lean on the high speed needle. Did you hold the nose up with full throttle to see if it stalls or looses RPM,s? Gary

RE: Easy Star Removing Servo
If the adhesive is wood glue like elmers, etc you might try water, won't hurt a bad servo. If it is epoxy you will probably have to cut it out, I don't think there is a solvent that would not attack the foam. Normally heat applied to epoxy will soften it enough to take apart but here again the heat will get the foam. If you cut it out, you can fill any void you create with epoxy or cut small foam pcs to splice in using epoxy or foam CA. Good luck. Gary

Servo reverser
I just removed a servo reverser from an old plane and have installed it in my [new to me U-Can-Do 60] without instruction sheet. There is no brand name on the reverser. I did find that the phillips screw on it connects to some type of POT [I guess] because when you turn it, it moves the left elevator which I used to match the location of both elevators. Now the problem, I am getting more travel on the right elevator than the left. Sure could use some help. Gary

RE: Need help w / 20+ yr old Goldberg Piper Cub
ORIGINAL: AA5BY It is good to hear voices that fill in the full range of options as I agree, your Cub doesn't have to have a huge power mill in it. I bought mine used with an old .50 Saito and it does great and it also has coverite on it. One shortcoming of the Goldberg Cub unless it was just the way the builder built mine, is that the gear torsion sections are captured in a vertical groove, but if the bottom plywood holes loosen, the torsion ends can come out of the groove and the landing gear folds up. If yours are like that, I suggest adding a small piece of plywood so as to enclose the torsion rod slot on each side, ensuring that over time the torsion rod stays in the slot. If this is confusing, I could provide a sketch. As to the struts... mine also came without struts and I wanted them but wanted them to be simple. I made them from 3/16'' dowel and used Nyrod to make the mounting ends. Cut a two inch length of Nyrod and heat one end and while its soft, squeeze together to make the flat area to mount it. Be sure to drill the hole for mounting screw to avoid cracking it. Works quite well and is very simple and they are durable... I've used a set of struts made this way for many years. As pointed out... the struts are cosmetic.
Thanks for the advise. The torsion bars are already in a wide grove side by side with the straps holding them in place. Nice idea on the struts where do you get Nyrod and how expensive is it? Gary

RE: Need help w / 20+ yr old Goldberg Piper Cub
Thanks to all for your input. I did finally find the engine mount [on Dave Brown web site], it was a Dave Brown for a 90FS and the OS 61 FX 2 stroke fits just fine. I was able to collect enough info off the old instruction sheets [on line] to fabricate the struts but tht will wait till after maiden as they are not structural. Will go to new servos. Where is the best place to buy Coverite fabric covering? Thanks again, Gary P.S. By the way, how are you feeling Gray Beard. I met Karol Hansen in FL last week and he said you were making good progress.

Need help w / 20+ yr old Goldberg Piper Cub
Just purchased and 20+ yr old Carl Goldberg Piper Cub with 76 1/2" wing span. She looks in pretty good condition for her age. Some questions: ** How close is the 40th annaversary cub in construction, etc. **Are plans and instruction available for the ortiginal, if not would the new instruction work. Need CG, control surface settings and how to build and install the missing wing struts.? **This baby has the old style Futaba servos with the offset plugs, 2 close together & 1 about twice as far from the other pair. Any chance thes servos are still good? Do they make a converter to current plug desigh. **It looks to me like the ortginal motor mount was a Dave brown based on the attqach hole layout. Anyone know which Dav Brown mount it might be? Sure would like to use original mounting holes if possible./ Looked on line for Dave Brown specs but could not find the hole pattern layour noted in any of the spec info. **Did the kit come with covering? Friend said covering is Coverite with pinking strips. **New cub info says it's for a 40 to 61 size glow engine any problem on this one? Gary
