RE: Northstar mods - Tell me what you think
landing the NS is a breeze if you stall it in. They will not drop a wing on stall they just pitch up the nose untill they stop flying if you hold them just off the water you will get a perfect landing. Do not try hot landing as all you will get is a ballooned takeoff followed by stalled flatbottomed smack on the water and the belly splitting open at the worsed hot touch and goes are ok to a point but i still have seen the belly open up on on hot touches. I used a 40 motor on my old NS but the power is low for water take off. ASP53 now gives me great preformance Cheers Russell NZ

RE: Northstar mods - Tell me what you think
Thanks Jeffo for your feed back i do have a 4500 but weight of it will be a huge penalty and i still have not worked out how to section it but i'm sure the wing cord is thick enough to take a carbon tube i like your 1.5 and one peice is not to much of a problem cheers Russell

RE: Northstar mods - Tell me what you think
HI Jeffo thanks for your replie. Your facts worrie me . At 20lbs and a 160 os powered there seems to be a massive weight change of 3x on a standard N star. If was to use that extrapilation a 2x would turn out 32lbs which would make a high load wing in this design very hard to build in 3 sections. I was hoping that my 2x Nstar to be around 20lbs and powered by my Thunder tiger pumped and piped 120 although i have a OS160 as a backup motor. Can u give more info on your construction etc. I built a simatar 1.5 years ago and had huge sucess and was hoping that the Nstar would be the same. Transporting is no problem as i have a model trailer and a van for my hobby cheers Russell

RE: Northstar mods - Tell me what you think
Hi9 Guy's here in NZ we are just heading into our winter months when the temp is around 5deg celus and the wind goes away for longer periods. I can get my N Star out for our flyin . I've owned 5 now built 2 and bought over the last twenty years or so the others. I see all those all those great remodeled and add on jobs you do and it gets me cranked up thinking i can do something different like a 2x N star at 88in it not much bider than my Morrey Bravo wing but i still thing it is possable to make it out of foam in three peices. I have noticed in trwling all the Nstar forum the mention of x 1.5 Nstars but nobody has gone into any detail so could i have some feedback. Like motor size performance etc these are great planes and i always get a good crowd watching wnenever i am flying mine. Cheers Russell Christchurch New Zealand

RE: Northstar mods - Tell me what you think
Deadeye shame that your first flight turned to custard but that.s the name of the game with RC planes. I.ve own 5 NS and 4 have come to greff in differant ways but don.t be put as these ships are tops when you have a handle of them. With landing you need to do a long shallow approuch as slow as possable. They pitch there nose up as they slow down and will settle down on the water as they sink down. putting them down whilst they are still flying will turn to custard as they bounce off the ground then stall and with no ellavator responce at slow speed you can only watch as your 7lbs ship tumbles to a stop. When you get it right they look so cool as they settle down great. Mind you I have never had wheels on any of my ships so it is always a water landing and my site gives me a huge landing area, i think i would be a lot more worried about landing a NS on a limited runway. Hope you get to put your together in the near future and get it back in the air. Cheers and merry chritmas to all from New Zealand Russell R

RE: Northstar mods - Tell me what you think
Well you now know how great they fly pleasing that you have no wing rock the weight of 6.6 lbs is inclusive of balast i suppose how was your elevator responce. That is the only bone of contenion i have with the N.star don.t every try a low level loop as you will drown the pilot. Someone said on another thread that having flaperons as well as elevator improves the response. Go enjoy flying the Nstar Cheers Russell NZ

RE: DL-50 engine
Is your muffler blocked does the motor sound quiter. try removing muffler and see if your rev.s increase .if you have used the wrong type oil or to high a mix ratio the muffler could be blocked check it Cheers Russell

RE: Northstar mods - Tell me what you think
on the wingrocking read my earlier write up about it on this thread. also i have now flown my latest model which i bought s/hand and in the 4 flight i got no wing rock and the tip float have not been modified. this model is quite old and the wing covering is very loose wether that got any thing to do with it. I know that a few years ago i was playing around with banner towing and to stop my banners from flapping i used wind break messing so that there was a balance preasure on both sides of the banner when towing them my latest banner is 8mtrs X 1mtres and it follows around a steady as a rock keep the chating up chaps saves building cheers Russell NZ

RE: Northstar mods - Tell me what you think
HI all from New Zealand I have had 3 Northstars now unfortunately my luck runs out often but i love these ships and i have a mate that loves building and not flying so he builds them and i stuff them but that over a 15 year period. The wing wooble is inheriot was all Northstars that i have had and the fix is to extend the tip float with a turnup and the vortex that comes off that square ended float is reduced and so is the wooble. My last ship i did this to is and it stoped that wooble. not that the wooble is anything to worry about. I flew my first two on a K&B 40 and my last one on a SC40 and it performed well my weight was 6.25lbs with 1lb of lead in front i have just aquired a second hand Nothstar so will be back flying one very soon. I have never had uc on any of my n/stars as i love them off the water to much. Putting a servo down the back is increasing the balast needed up front you have atleast a 6to1 moment to think about I always use nylon sleeve with bowden cable and get good throttle responce but it does pay to cover the motor end cable entry so the glow oil doesn.t get in and bind up the travel speed. c.ya Russell R NZ
