How many gear sets on a Rock Crawler or Monster Truck?
For the last several weeks I've been developing an easier way for many entering the world of RC electric to have a more successful experience when selecting the components for their power systems. After what I consider the success of the boat power system selection tool, I began on the car / truck sections. Here is the [link=http://www.radiocontrolinfo.com/car_calc/index.php]RC Car LiPo, motor and ESC[/link] selection page. Please take note this is directed mainly for people entering the hobby. Experienced hobbyists are encouraged to complete this fun stage on their own. A couple suggestions or questions I'm interested in at this point are: For Monster trucks, how many gear sets are there? What I mean by a gear set is a pinion and spur gear make up a gear set. The pinion and spur gear of a differential unit would make up another gear set. In rc the most common number of gear sets are 2. Some cases there are only one as in many pan type cars. What is a typical final drive ratio? For a Rock Crawler same idea as above, how many gear sets are there? What is a typical final drive ratio? Another question is, other than what currently exists, what are some more of the more popular motors or ESC's being used. I still have another one or two brands to upload, however I'm looking for any other missed brands. I believe I have Neu ready to go, possibly LMT and LRP.

RE: Need help on 40c, 50c, 65+c ratings..
My words are carefully chosen. You always want the highest "C" rating. If you do not understand this you are missing out on a very important part of selecting a proper power system. By saying you don't recommend anything anymore makes me aware that you really do not understand how it works. The only reason I jumped in on this thread is to make certain that it is well understood to use the highest "C" rating possible. It would be in the best interest for tc4 drft to use the highest "C" rating and then even run 2 sets of the packs in parallel. Having 2 sets of 2 5s 5000mAh at 50C in parallel would effectively have the same continuous discharge output of a 5000mAh 100C pack. This would further increase reliability of the ESC and Packs. Once a properly selected prop is used, this can make for an excellent power system. I would also say that on 8s your motor, ESC, and packs should be running quite cool. 10s will greatly increment the power by quite a large margin. On 10s you must be monitoring heat.

RE: Need help on 40c, 50c, 65+c ratings..
I've not once said you are wrong. That is most likely what happened with that ESC. It's a weak band-aid fix to a serious problem. And if you really look in to it, they are not even governing the right value. Max current draw is composed of the "C" rating and capacity. Going from a 25C to a 30C pack is a negligible amount of power in a properly selected system. "C" rating are not even that accurate, it's such a silly limitation to place. Expecting the LiPo to take the heat because the ESC is not properly selected is poor. That is my point. It seems you are in favor of micro managing the "C" rating and I think THAT is wrong. What are you recommending the original poster to do?

RE: Need help on 40c, 50c, 65+c ratings..
So all of that explanation for an "LOL?" A motor can demand its stall current and blow up every ESC on the market, what are you trying to say? How does this have anything to do with the "C" rating as you have pointed out a few posts ago? If you have an ESC being destroyed because you moved up from 25C pack to a 30C pack, you have a serious (maybe a little louder serious) issue in your method of power system selection. It's that simple. Always select the highest "C" rating possible. If anyone says anything different there is a serious problem. In 99.9% of all other setups, a higher "C" rating will greatly increase the reliability, especially in the ESC. This is not anything new.

RE: Need help on 40c, 50c, 65+c ratings..
ORIGINAL: sundogz This would seem so, but [link=http://www.minicatracingusa.com]Minicat Racing[/link] voids your warranty if you use over a 30C lipo on their [link=http://www.minicatracingusa.com/]30a esc. [/link] So evidently, a motor can ask for more amps than the esc is able to handle.
What you are reading in terms of MiniCats warranty, does that really make sense to you? Have you considered that a 1000mAh 40C battery would be capable of delivering 40A of continuous current. A 4500mAh 10C pack would deliver 45A of continuous current. According to this very straight forward example the 10C pack would be able to output more current than the ESC could handle even though its "C" rating is 4 times smaller or a 1/4 of the rating of the other pack. Governing the "C" rating does nothing to the potential power output of the pack if you increase the battery capacity. Makes me wonder who thought of this "C" rating idea and this is what I came up with: It seems to me that this ESC may have been on the extreme border with older low "C" rating packs in one of their RTR boats. People then used up to date packs with higher C ratings which increased voltage and amperage ultimately destroying minicats ESC. This subtle increase in performance because of a more reliable battery makes it very obvious the ESC was far too close to its limits. If you increase the "C" rating and you are destroying ESC's, the solution is very simple. You do NOT have the proper ESC and should have much more wiggle room. In other words this was a very poor band-aid solution to a much larger problem. As for the original poster ALWAYS use the highest C rating you may budget. There's a very simple rule to selecting electric components. Make certain if the motor will draw 100A, that you are at least 20% higher than this on your ESC selection. Absolute minimum would be a 120A ESC. As for battery, make certain your batteries can deliver at least 20% higher than the 120A ESC. Let's say 150A. Now what really will happen in the system? Your Motor will draw 100A so your ESC must provide 100A of the possible 120A. Your batteries will only need to supply the 100A of the possible 150A. So it's 100A, 100A, 100A that each component will need to supply. The bigger the gaps the more the reliability increases. If I had a "C" rating approaching infinity, my batteries would become the most reliable efficient pack ever. Would I destroy my ESC? Of course not, that is silly.

RE: Twin Hydro Videos
I'm all over the place. Boats, Planes, Cars. As for boats I was running a couple nitro tunnels several years ago. 3.5 and 7.5. Enjoyed the 7.5 more, even though it is less popular in many areas. Ended up selling off all my nitro stuff across the board. Raced electrics for a short period of time during that time. Raced a FE Tunnel 30" and a FE rigger 27". Currently have a 25cc Zen powered mono and a 34" FE rigger with a couple builds on the go. I'm a fan of the Tunnels and Riggers. [:D]

RE: To UBEC or not to UBEC? (help)
If both are switching, you are in better shape. [;)] As for linear, if you have a 3A loaded continuous output from the BEC at 5.5v and use a 2,3,4 cell LiPo. - the waste heat just from the BEC unit dropping the voltage would be approximated by: 2 cell LiPo - (7.4 - 5.5 ) * 3 = 5.7w. 3 cell LiPo - (11.1-5.5) * 3 = 16.8w. 4 cell LiPo - (14.8 - 5.5) *3 = 27.8w. If the BEC unit could only dissipate 15w for example. At 2 cells, You would get the full 3A. At 3 cells you would get less than 3A and 4 cells it would be even less. All of this would be due to the voltage of the main battery. This is more or less of what is meant. It depends on how you look at it. Current definitely must be there as heat in watts, is the product of voltage and current.

RE: Rx Lipo and reg vs Nimh
I'm using LiPo and a Regulator in the gas boats and even a few electric planes/boats. Although I am using one of many 3s packs I borrow from the electric planes. Can not count how long they last as it seems for just about ever. Also use a 3 cell LiPo in my ancient Futaba 3PM. I do know I easily get 8 hours from a 2200 pack in the tx and only replace 1750mAh. Doing this since 2009 with no issues. NiMh packs are old tech [:D] How'd the LiFe work out?
ORIGINAL: Scota4570 I am working on a scratch build Airtronics Q-tee. It was my first RC airplane in about 1976. It used a Cox 049. I would like to buy a motor form Hobby King or similar that would turn a 6x3 prop at about 15k. That would be about 10 amps? I would be running 3S lipos. So about 1500KV?
1500kv, 3s lipo, 6x3 prop. I would guess around 13 Amps.

RE: NEW to FE? BUILDING a boat? What's a LiPo? Look Here FIRST!!
If you ran one 3s lipo, running 2 3s lipos in parallel will help the batteries. Make certain the lipo returns to its original state and when placed in parallel with another pack it is not in series.
