RE: Byron Ryan ST-A
I just got my hands on a byron Ryan this afternoon. I have all the parts but NO instruction booklet at all - nothing!!! It would be great if you could send me an instruction booklet on it if you still have access to it. I'm sure I could probably figure it all out but I HATE guessing. Your assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much if you can help. My e-mail address. keith.fontenot@ventech-eng.com

10-4 on the gear. I will be going to the field tomorrow 04/02/11. I will do my best to get that information about the landing gear to you guys as soon as I can. While your at it outacontrol41 buy a couple of those Moki's. I'll take one. [;)] LOL

RE: Gruman Ag-Cat
Lets do this. Go a head and mount the Moki 150 CC and see how she balances. This will answer a lot of questions wheather or not it will balance perfectly or not. If it was me and I had a BIG OLE' Radial....I promise you that it would be the first engine of choice even if I did have to move things around inside the fuse or even some weight aft of the "CG"....Moki it up dudes or whatever radial you guys have. One thing I would like to mention. I was speaking with Duane about the aluminun gear that comes with the kit. We believe and have come to an a agreement that the gear that comes with the kit is too ridgid. It will bend on you if you happen to have and un-perfect landing. I found another gear that is perfect for the DH-Agcat. It's made by a fellow member from our club in Texas City, Tx. I believe it's made of Kevlor I'm not really sure but I'll find out who the guy is and if he still produces that type of gear. My plane weights right at 40 lbs and I have dropped in from 5' straight down on the gear and the gear does nothing but absorb the shock. This stuff is amazing and he also makes several different sizes. I'll try to get some contact information for you guys and an e-mail address along with a phone #. I hope the guy still makes them. I'll get back with y'all on that one. Have a good one.

RE: Gruman Ag-Cat
I'm guessing the O.S. 5 cylinder weights around 5.25 lbs. I ended up adding 3 lbs in and around my motor box adding in the factor of 5 lbs for my engine. Total weight in the nose including the engine is 8 lbs in my plane. Which should be just about correct for all of the DH-Agcat depending on what engine you choose. Keep in mind that the only thing in front of the wing is the motor itself and that's it. Also keep in mind that adding 1" stand off mounts will lessen the amount of weight you will have to add to the nose. If you look at the full size plane the radial is mounted pretty far out in front. Just something to think about. The further out you mount the engine the less weight you will need to add. Do not add the weight to the cowling. Secure to the motor box. that's what I did and I haven't had any issues with it. I'm always here to help. Again, the 10 lbs MOKI should be fine. Just mount it directly to the motor box without any stand offs. Just add the normal down and right hand off sets to your engines guys. It's the same off set principles you've done on any of your other planes.

RE: Gruman Ag-Cat
Oh man is that ever going to look and sound AWESOME. I want to put a radial on mine BIG TIME. Hopefully in the future - Ho Hum.... The engine I have on my agcat weights right at 5 lbs and I added another 4 lbs to the engine box to balance the plane. I don't see a problem at all installing the 10 lbs Moki. I would think you won't have to add any additional weight at all which is great. I have the Ailerons set oh high rates at 100% and low rates are set at 60%. Elevator high rates are set as high as your radio will go. For my radio which is a "Spectrum DX7 goes up to 125%. You'll never use all of it except for taxing on and off of the runway but it does give you a level off comfort coming in for slow approaches on landings. Elevator low rates are set at 70%. Experiment with these setting as you perform test flights and tweak the adjustments as you go. I don't fly with any expo. For me; I like to feel every move I make in real time. That's just me. To each his own I always say. I found the "CG" to be 7" from the leading edge of the top wing. It should be about the same for all of the DH-Agcats. Feel Free to contact me anytime. Oh, and post some pictures of the Moki engine so that I can dream. LOL and also some pics of the building progress. Till next time.

RE: Gruman Ag-Cat
I wanted to send out a GREAT BIG TEXAS YEEHAW to all of my cropdusting buddies. It's been a while since I've been on this thread but I haven't neglected it. I just haven't had anything to write about, but now I see where you guys are buying the DH-Agcat. Remeber me, I have the prototype and worked with Duane verbally over the phone and did some brainstorming with my old buddy about certain specifications and other miscellanious input. But really; it was all Duane on perfecting the overall and final outcome of this wonderful awesome looking flying machine. I can tell you now in the year that I have flown mine at Big Bird Fly-In events it has alway been the center of attention due to the fact that #1 the full size Agcat is not commonly seen except for certain farming areas. #2 I can just about bet you that you haven't seen many or by that fact "ANY" Grumman Agcats at any RC Fly-ins. Oh the neat & wonderful stories I have heard from full size agcat pilots about they're moments and the wonderful memories they have made in this incredible machine that Grumman produced. I've spent hours upon hours at fly-ins talking about how this project came to be and also how the pilots described to me in detail of how the plane taxis, rolls out for take off and how the tail is flying in no time and how the plane is such a dream to fly. I've even heard incredible stories of near miss crashes and crashes and how the grumman agcat saved there lives because it was/is a tough airplane. That is tradition with Grumman. They built tough hard to shoot down fighters such as the F3F Wildcat, F6F Hellcat-"The Ace Maker" and the Beautiful F8F Bearcat which I'm restoring a "Ziroli" Bearcat at this moment. I believe I have the only flying DH-Agcat now. Come on guys. Those of you who have them lets get them "spray duster/bombers" in the air. I'm getting pretty lonely up there all by myself. Oh sure you do see the Pawnee's, Agwagons, 502's and they are magnificant. I love all agricultural planes. BUT NOW IS THE TIME FOR THE AGE OF THE GRUMMAN AGCAT!!!!!!!!! Oh, and if you're flying higher than the trees.......You're still a rookie. Spraying for pine beetles don't count!!! LOL Take care to all of my pals. CROPDUSTERS TO THE RESCUE........POWDER IT UPPPPPPPPPP.

I'm a little embarrased about this. I can understand the drawings but I wish I understood what the words meant on the smoke system [8|][8|]. Phase21 your design is absolutely great!!!!!. I will gladly put the one I've been working on in the trash. Your's is wonderful and easy to maintain and less complicated to build and more cost effective. is there anyway we can get it translated to english? It would surely help. Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful design. Take care.

RE: crop duster r/c
I do understand about one thing after another. Start when you can and just do a little at a time. You know how the games played. Post your top 3 choices and we'll all help you decide....[;)] O.S. Radial; Oh man what a BEAUTY with a beautiful $$$$PRICE$$$$. I think the weight of the engine would balance the D.H. Agcat pretty close to right on the money. My engine weighs probably around 3 to 4 pounds and I added another 3.5 pounds to balance her so that should be just about perfect if you've got the cash. Like I said before my plane weighs 37 pounds and doesn't effect how she fly's at all. Also keep in mind that the D.H. Agcat has two huge flat airfoil wings with a lot of lift and low wing load. I don't know what the wing load is but it's pretty low. One day I'll calculate it and post it hear. Even if your plane comes in heavier than mine it should be fine. After my mishap over the weekend I'm more convinced now more than ever that I'm glad Duane built this plane solid as a rock. Any other plane of lesser value that encountered such an impact would have been rubble or at best-firewood. I'll take quality over a cheap ANY DAY. Loved the videos. Keep them coming. I'll try to get one of my flights videod at Bomber Field this year and post a link to youtube. We'll see how the timing goes. I'll check out the seidel radail also. Right now I'm just looking at a lot of options for a radial.

RE: crop duster r/c
I'm using the Brisson 4.2. PLENTY OF POWER. But she needs a radial $$$$$$$$$$$$$ [X(] for that extra special scale look. I really don't want to fool with fitting the simulated radial. I just don't think I'll be successful at mounting it. I have one, but don't have the confidence nor the time to fit one around the brisson. The engine has a mechanical advance. I don't think I want to convert it right now so I'll just fly her the way she is for the time being. I'll just wait until I can afford the radial. Hmmmm which one to use. My cat came out at 37 pounds. Keep in mind she a prototype and I have a lot of extra stuff on here so she's going to be heavy but once she leave the ground she feels like she weighs about 10 pounds. The reason I hit the ground is that my throttle clevis broke mid way through the flight and she went to full power and then dead sticked on me on a low pass. I didn't have the altitude so I had to do the best I could under the circumstances. She Lives!!!!!! [:D] By the way. Have you started building yours yet. If not; do you have a picture of the one you think you might copy after? There's also a few more you that have purchased the D.H. Agcat. Come on..... Let's see the building process and how there coming. I shared mine now its your turns. [:D] [;)] Let's get this thread moving again..............

Hey guys, Just click on the attachment and it should show up. Check out what Mr. Duane Habits built right under our noses!!! I didn't even know about it. Boy~~~~he sure can keep a secret. He also told me that if anybody wanted one he would work with you on it. I really don't know much more about it other than it's a "Weatherly 620B. I think it has a 72" wingspan and probably doesn't weigh no more than 12 pounds at it's heaviest. Pretty cool looking I thought. 2nd Deal. It seems I've misplaced my Agcat list. I'm sure I'll find it in one of my files on the computer, but if you are on the list or by that fact not on the list and you are ready to purchase the D.H. Agcat the door is wide open to own one of these very rare airplanes. Here's a shot of her at the B-17 fly-in at Bomber Field back in September 2009. Man, she got plenty of attention. There were at least 3 full scale Agcat pilots out there that day and really enjoyed her and spent literally hours going over the details of how it came about and the paint job etc.... Enjoy.

RE: crop duster r/c
DGUY, You have the right idea about applying a flat clear coat over the monocoat. That should do the trick. Here's the trick to painting over monocoat. It's what I do and I've never had a problem with it. Take you some fine grade steel wool and rub it over the surface. It doesn't take much pressure at all. You are creating imperfections to the finish of the monocoat which in the industrial world we call a "profile". You may not be able to see it unless you get eye level to the area you just rubbed down, but you should be able to see the shine fade down. That's what makes the paint stick to the monocoat. Make sure you post some pictures of the Pawnee when you get gack to the states. Good luck over there and stay safe.

RE: crop duster r/c
Thanks DGUY, I don't think I've talked with you in the past. Welcome to the forum if you are new....... all of us are always glad to speak to new folks. What kind of planes to you have? Any dusters? Are you in Iraq now? Tango Juliet, I use several different kinds but the most commons I use are Polyurethane clear coat in the spray can and the one you shoot through the gun. You can get those products at your local hardware store. It just depends on the project I'm doing that determines the type of clear coat I use. I'll try to take a picture of the can so you know what I'm talking about. I also you the "SIG Supercoat clear. You will have to thin it down to spray it through you sprayer. I didn't use any clear coat on the Agcat. Take a look at it........I don't think it needs much protection against ware and tear now does it. Ha!

Your welcome..... In the near future I'll show you how to get a riveted panel line. It's done with a template. I'll show ya'll how to make the template and how to airbrush the application onto your airplane. It's so simple and easy and will save you a ton of time you won't believe it. I did one whole side of the wing on my agcat in about 30 minutes. Here's a close up example of what I'm talking about. I'll post the tutorial video in this note when I've completed it. Sorry the pictures are a little blurry but I think you get the jest of it. Have a good one.

RE: crop duster r/c
Oh yea, I guess I forgot to mention that. I use the regular "Testers Enamel" (don't forget to thin the paint down with some thinner/water before you start your airbrushing) and the "Model Master Acryl"-Water Based. 95% of the time is use the Testers Enamel because it is very durable and I've never had to take something back to the bench and perform a redo because of to much handling or by that fact to much fuel residue. But there is a limit to everything so be careful to the exposer to fuel. It will eventually ware down after time if you haven't shot a clear coat over it. If your model is new and you are airbrushing the details after the primary paint job and then clear coat over the airbrush details then you shouldn't have any problems. If you airbrush your details after the fact then just be ready for some of it to fade away through time. Anyway, heres a picture of the paints I use. I've tried the airbrush paints, but these seem to work the best for me. Hey, but I'm open to try other paints that are just as durable if you have any suggestions.

Hey Duane, I knew you could type........ Ha, just kidding glad to see you checked in. Eveyone really appreciates your presence in this forum. Now you've be baptized to the forum. So now you have become a regular from this point forward. Good to hear from you and thanks for the cudos on the build of prototype #1. The pleasure was all mine. Thank you for the opportunity. A fellow pilot asked me to do a how to lesson on how I airbrush my panel lines and rivets form the RC cropduster thread and I thought I would share that information with you guys on this forum. The two videos are short brief and to the point. There are several different ways I do rivets but I just covered one way in the video I will add more ways of how I capture panel line and rivets in different way as time goes by. Also included are several shots of the plane that I'm performing the airbrushing on so you can see some of the final out come. I hope you enjoy them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZlJ3vj1ngU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTgsbmiOc6Q

RE: crop duster r/c
Okay, since your inquiring here is a very quick lesson on how to lay down a panel lines on my planes. At least it works for me and also it's one way I do rivets and they are very effective. There are other ways I do rivets but this is an example of one way. Also I've included several more pictures of the kit bashed thrush with the wings on it in order to give you guys and better idea of what just a few hours of very simple airbrush techniques can do for your plane. If this is something you've thought you always wanted to do then just start doing it. It's really not as hard as it may seem. If your a beginner practice on other things first like a piece of paper or cardboard or some type of flat surface. Don't practice on your plane. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZlJ3vj1ngU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTgsbmiOc6Q

Belive it or not when we cleaned out the garage last week we also had a yard sale to go with it and gave a ton of stuff to good will......I guess I didn't give enough of it away huh...... Thanks for the link.....I'll pull the specs on my engine and compare the two engines....give me a little time to do a little research......If by chance you get a wild hair and have that plane ready to fly by the weekend give me a nudge and I'll research it faster.... Ha! All jokes aside. Duane is probably one of the most likeable gentleman you will ever meet. He is very modest and very honest and sincere with everyone he comes in contact with. RE: Gruman Ag-Cat
Just to give you a bench mark. The brisson 4.2 I have on my agcat puts out 30 pounds of thrust. It swings a 22 x 8 prop. I never got to half throttle if that helps. I guess if you can find out what size prop that is recommended for that type of engine and also find out the thrust ratio's affiliated with the recommended prop. You should be able to find some kind of stats on it somewhere I would think. I'll look around for some information also. By the way: I'm air brushing panel lines and weathing on a kit bashed dust devil. A buddy of mine built it to simulate a thrush..........And no, it's not even close to David Hayes thrush........It was just a fun to do project just to see if we could make it look like a thrush. After all it wouldn't look like any thing else right.... . My buddy and I did some horse trading for some detail work on the simulated thrush......I think it's coming out pretty good. Go check it out. the weathering really makes the plane look like a whole different plane. It's post # 138. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_1639293/anchors_8836962/mpage_57/key_/anchor/tm.htm#8836962

Hey guys, I'm doing some good old fashioned horse trading in this post. I've agreed to airbrush panel lines and weather for an engine. I think she coming out pretty good. The plane is a kit bashed dust devil. I think that's what it was. Another friend of mine did all the modifications and painted it. This plane has never flown since it was modified. It should look great in the air once we get it all together. I also will be installing a Williams Brothers simulated radial on the plane..........And no,,,,,,,,,,,,,it's not even close to Mr. David Hayes plane I can assure you of that. I hope you enjoy the pics. I will post more as I progress in this project.

RE: Gruman Ag-Cat
You're a better man than me because man I can tell you right now trying to fit my dummy radial around the engine and try to still make it look like an engine is going to be harder for me than putting the Agcat together. I've started it , but I don't feel good about it right now because I've had to cut so much of it away. I just don't now how I will ever get back all what I've had to cut out around the carburater and throttle mechanisim. I haven't even started on the muffler side of the engine yet. Also, I need to becareful because this plastic radial around a hot motor only means one thing....."MELTING". That one really concerns me for sure. I've seen the pictures that you presented on this forum but I can tell you right now mine as of right now will never come out that clean. I'm seriously and frustratingly scratching my head on this one . I'm at the point to know that I need to walk away from it a while and come back to it when my thoughts, ideas and Patients all balance out so I can get the creativity to install the dummy radial that looks like I didn't have to make all of the modifications to it. "Question" How do you install this "Plastic Radial" around an engine and muffler that will surely melt it? I just can't figure this one out guys, so any suggestion or comments will be very much appreciated it. I know what it's supposed to look like but getting there will be the battle. Right now I'm at the point where I'm not putting one on it all so I need all of ya'lls input on this one for a fact!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Gruman Ag-Cat
It looks just the way I remembered it except it looks like you may have the "A" model tail. Mine has the "B" model tail. Your's is taller and mine is wider. Maybe it's just me but I think the radial should be fine and also it will look amazing. I think either way you slice it you probably are going to come out weighing in the mid 30 pound range anyway. I can tell you from experience that once she leaves the ground she will feel like she only weighs about 10 pounds in the air and I'm not kidding. I don't think you can go wrong with the radial considering you already have one. If I had a radial I would mount it on mine in a second!!!!! Here are several still shots on the day of the first flight. Compliments of my friend Rick libersate from Orange, Texas.

RE: Gruman Ag-Cat
Thank you for the link. That's exactly what I need it to look like. We'll just see how it comes out. I don't have much faith right now, but once I really get into it I'm sure it will all turn out fine. By the way, man you are one incredible builder. Your attention to detail is 2nd to none. You are a master from my point of view. All of you guys need to click on the his link and check out his planes they are absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!! I definetly could learn a thing or to from you. I can't wait to see how your AgCat comes out. Thanks for sharing you work with all of us...
