RE: Engine suggestion for 1/4 Cub
Contemplating the same thing right now for my BUSA 1/4 scale L-4. Last weekend I got to fly both a DLE 30 powered 1/4 scale Cub and a Zenoah 23 powered 1/4 scale Cub (Thanks Tom and Paul). The DLE 30 powered Cub flys way too fast and even at half throttle has so much air moving over the tail surfaces that it flits around and looks very un-scale, even unnatural. The Zenoah powered Cub flew very scale and was not lacking for power. I'm going with a DLE 20 in my L-4, but may break down and put a Bowman ring in it before I install it.

RE: Quarter Scale Cub
1/4 scale Cub is a 1/4 scale Cub, so any 1/4 scale cowl will do fine. Just get the nice, fiberglass one from BUSA.

Or just get the BUSA kit, no modifying necessary and a great flying airplane also.
ORIGINAL: clivemc
ORIGINAL: captinjohn Don,t know about how many smaller engines are in the works....but a smaller ignition is being developed...thats is all I can say. It was a promise................<img alt='''' src=''http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/msn/thumbs_up.gif'' />
how much smaller can they get and still be reliable i wonder. remember that the smaller they get the closer all the components inside the case are going to get. the downside here is on the high voltage side the spark will look for the easiest path to jump across? which may no longer be the spak plug gap. we also seem to want them to be HV capable, again the higher the input voltage gets the quicker it will look for a way out ? no doubt improvements can only be made through testing and the need for something new, so if something is being done great. I still dont see a problem with the igntions the way they are though. but i also dont fly warbirds with no room :)
Ohlsson & Rice and Forrester used to make .23 and .29 CI spark ignition engines back in the '40's and they seem to've run fine.............

RE: Can this be fixed???
Here's one I didn't think of while we were doing email, can you cut a slot across the top of the screw with a cut off wheel deep enough for a screwdriver without going through the case? If so, cut the slot, put the engine in the oven at about 200 and let the case warm up and the aluminum case should expand more than the bolt, hopefully making it loose enough to remove with the screwdriver.

RE: IMAA Constitution Under Assult
This will probably be my last year as an IMAA member, struggled with why I should renew even this year. The new IMAA website, while pretty, provides considerably less useful information than the old website. I don't see any good reason to visit the new website anymore. I considered starting an IMAA chapter in San Diego so we could host an event, and I was going to pay the charter fee, but couldn't even get 5 local IMAA members to provide me the information I needed (address and IMAA number) to fill out the charter application. May still do the big bird event, just won't be an IMAA event. Well, enough of this, I'm off to do another LMAI sign-off for a non-IMAA member.

Are you talking about LDS with the Jetmach? I got one of their Jetmach's 3 years ago, service was good, plans were good, wood was nice and well cut. Plane's held up well, still flying it 3 years later. Only issue I have is the main gear mount is just a little weak for brake equipped aircraft and heavy use of brakes will crack the wood around the gear mounts.

One bad point is there are a number of committees where a member and/or chair is on 2 or more committees. That appears to me to be a "Gathering of the POWER BROKERS".
As with any volunteer organization, getting people to devote hours of their free time to work they don't get paid for is not an easy task. All of the Committee members I've dealt with are on their respective Committee due to devotion to the hobby and usually a personal empathy for the Committee subject. As I am personally on 2 Committee's, maybe I'm too close to the problem, but I can't see how 1 person on multiple Committees is "bad" or makes someone a "POWER BROKER". Perhaps you could explain it to me Horrace.
ORIGINAL: Silent-AV8R
ORIGINAL: ira d If the secret service took some rc equip there is more to the story than we are being told, in 99.9% of the cases it would be the local police who would come out on a compliant of ilegal rc flying and would simply tell the offender to move on.
I have heard this urban legend before. Nobody has ever been able to produce a single shred of evidence that it is true. BTW - referring to anonymous ''reliable'' sources is not proof.
Presidents from Reagan on have routinely flown into MCAS Miramar (and NAS Miramar before the change of ownership) when visiting San Diego and I've had personal experience with how this situation is handled. Secret Service, usually accompanied by base police, (only because we're behind a locked gate and SS doesn't have the combinaton), have come to the Miramar R/C Flyers field on several occassions and asked politely that we stop flying R/C airplanes for the remainder of the day. No confiscation of R/C equipment and all demands were politely presented as requests.

RE: Good R/C deals from the vendors at the AMA Convention?
The swap area is just that, a swap shop where non-vendor modelers go to sell their stuff. Just like any swap shop, some guys are there to clear out their personal inventory and just wanna get rid of stuff and some guys are there with stuff they really don't want to get rid of and are pretty proud of it. Vendor area has some good deals, Hacker always has a show special, some vendors, DW Foamies comes to mind, have good combo deals and don't forget the savings in shipping from buying at the show, I always buy a couple bags of screws from the screw and bolt guys cause it's like $5 a bag for (usually) 100 screws and if you buy them any other time of the year and have them shipped to you it's about $8 a bag with shipping. And then some vendors, Hobby People comes to mind, are selling at normal store prices, or in some cases even inflated prices cause they know it's still gonna be cheaper than buying and shipping, but even that saves you some money if you were going to buy it and have it shipped anyway. Some good deals, you just have to shop carefully.

RE: AMA Insurance??
OK, first hand experience. In the late 80's I was at a meeting on the North Island Naval Air Station and had planned on going flying afterward. While at the meeting someone broke into the back of my truck by breaking the latches off the shell door and stole an Aurora pattern plane and Airtronics Vision radio. With a copy of the police report, AMA insurance covered the loss of the airplane and the damage to my truck minus my auto coverage deductable.
