RE: Cutting down a pipe that is too long?
Not a big deal. Had to do this to the Tams Pipe for my Flash. (my measurement error). If your pipe is like mine, just remove the little bolts holding the bell mouth on and remove the bell mouth. Mark the pipe for the desired cut off and use a dremel with good cutting wheel to make the cut. Re-drill the holes to attach the bell mouth and bolt that back on and you will be good to go. Mine has a couple hundred flights on it with no problems at all.

RE: How to flat spot pins
I use a 1 inch belt sander and that seems to work pretty well. Just mark the spot where the flat needs to be then grab the other end of the pin with a good pair of vice grips. If you grip it just right you can lay the jaws of the vice grips on the table of the belt sander which helps keep everything lined up. Then sand against the belt fence of the sander and you will get a nice even flat surface.

RE: Ultra Flash ground handling
Like some have mentioned, I had the problem on my Classic Flash. Changed to a Tam's solid nose wheel and dialed in the correct amount of toe in and that helped a lot. What finally tamed the beast for me was building a mix that lowered the steering rate when the flaps were down. On top of the mix I put about 40% expo on the dialed down steering and the problem was totally cured for me anyway. I have the same setup on my Ultra and it works just fine.

RE: Gear Problem on Landing What Would You Do????
I agree, landing on two is better than one. My suggestion would be fly the plane till your normal landing time to burn off the extra fuel load and lighten the plane then put if right down he center line of the runway just like a normal landing. I would also shut the turbine down on final but only if you are comfortable with doing so.

RE: CARF Ultra Flash
I am flying the same setup. Ultra Flash and Cheetah and I had some problems with residual thrust at first but after throwing more Crow into the mix it is no problem now. I am using about 3-3 1/2 inches of flap and 10mm of crow mixed in. This seems to do the trick for me. Also if you have proportional bracking you can set up a little bit of brake mixed in to the flaps to help control the speed and bounce on touch down.

RE: CARF Ultra Flash
On the plus side, should you experience a delamination problem it is usually a really easy problem to fix with no adverse affect to future flying.

RE: Cant see my damn airplane !
Old eyes arn't usually as good as young eyes and silver or grey airplanes are usually harder to see than most colors (at least for me). All the suggestions mentioned above (the serious ones anyway) are valuable and most will help. One other thing that I think is important that I always try to do, especally when flying my jets is to fly with a spotter. That extra pair of eyes can really help in poor visibality situations and also to detirmine perspective when setting up an approach in less than perfect conditions.

RE: FUTABA 18MZ HAS ARRIVED
Mine all seemed to copy exactly the same as on the 14. I didn't check the real simple 4 channel setups on some of the smaller park flyer stuff but did a detail stare and compare on my Jets and other planes that use multiple channels and mixes. All the same.

RE: Running a turbine at full power non stop? Damaging?
It would sure seem unwise to me to run out of fuel and the lubricatioin that is associated with it while the turbine is at full temp and spinning 130,000 rpms or so. Even more so sitting on the ground with no residual air flowing through it.

RE: C-ARF Ultra Flash build Thread + Video
You can slow the UF way down with lots of flap, just like Robrow said. And just like he said the bottom end of that limit will most likely result in a really nasty tip stall at the worst possible time. I personally find it lots more predictable to use crow or reflex as some call it on my approches. It just seems to make the approach more controllable, especially if you are landing in a pretty good crosswind.

RE: Best turbine, best service?
I just had one of my turbines service at the new USA service center and couldn't ask for a better experience. And it seems somewhat self serving to start a thread asking who has the best service and then butt in and offer your opinion on what others think. Why even ask if you don't want to know?

RE: Best turbine, best service?
My recommmendation would be either the Jet Central Rabbit or King Tech. Both are great brands. The Jet Central Brand has a little more time under it's belt than King tech but the King Tech is a little less expensive up front. The Jet Central Rabbit is one of the best turbines I have ever got my hands on. Haven't been around a K-80 a lot but the K-140 is a screamer.

RE: Large jet suggestions for short runway?
Looked to me like the F-18 didn't have much of a problem. 550 ft is really pretty long even with an obstructed approach. We fly a number of big heavy jets at our club and our strip is only 400 ft long. Couple of big F-4's, Flash's, big Lightning, a big A-7, a BVM Ultra Bandit, and others. There is a bit more pucker factor on the shorter field but in the end it makes you concentrait more on your flying. I thnk I actually land better on our short stirp than on the big airports. I would think any of the planes listed above would be just fine on your strip. If you are concerned take the new plane to someplace big first and get used to it.

RE: Lipo Fire in Workshop
Exact same way my fire started, Gone 5 min and returned to garage full of smoke. Only difference is my batteries were in a CHARGE SAFE BAG. Fire stayed in the bag. It got hot enough to melt the outside of the bag and through the work bench mat and even scourch the wooded work bench but never spread beyound the bag. It would have eventually started the garage on fire but I figure the bag bougnt me 2-4 minutes to smell the smoke and get the mess thrown out on the driveway and put out. Still a huge mess to clean up but the bag saved my bacon.

RE: Lipo Fire in Garage
In my case I hit the fire with a CO2 extinguisher and followed immediately with a 5 lb dry extinguisher rated ABC. It was out with the CO2 but damn sure out after the big pile of yellow powder hit it and everything else within 10 feet.

RE: Lipo Fire in Garage
I share your pain and know what you mean about the mess when you damn near burn your house down. In my case it was two serperate Turnegy chargers into two two small 2200 turnegy batteries, charging rate only 1 amp, but that was enough. One of the batteries tourched and no I did not have a balance tap on the batterythat probably would have prevented it. I was in the house and smelled the acid. Opened the garage door and the whole 3 car garage was so thick with smoke I could barely see. Knew immediatly what it was though and in that life passing before your eyes moment, how stupid I was. But I also was lucky as I had taken one and only one positive safety measure I was charging in a charge safe bag and the fire was contained in the bag. Yanked the power cord, grabbed the bag with a piar of channel locks and threw the mess on the front drive and used the trusty CO2 bottle plus a powder bottle as well. And Andy is right about the mess. So I pitched anything that even looks like a cheap charger and got rid of any battery that didn't have a balance lead. Then I purchased two new high dollar chargers that have programed time settings, ballance taps to fit everything and temp probes. Then I bought two new charge safe bags and thanked the man upstairs for giving me another chance.

RE: What transmitter?
I have been flying my jets with a series of Futaba radios starting with the 12FG then 14MZ and just pulled the tirgger on a 18MZ. I love the programming of the Futaba and trust it in my jets. That being said, I don't think there is a best answer for everyone as far as radios go. What I do believe is that not setting up the airframe, power system and radio link to the highest standards is a sure invitation for failure, no mater what system you fly. I would bet there are a whole lot more jets bite the dust due to poor instalation of the overall power/radio system than any other reason, no mater what radio you fly.

RE: How do you roll? - Field support equipment
I just drilled out the rivets that hold the top end piece. Then you can pull the red corner plugs out and pull the cart up the boards onto the platform. Then plug the top rail back in and secure it with a couple of quick pins or the locking captive pins. The platform was purchased at Harbor Freight for $60 on sale. Dont know what the regular price is. The platform also works good by itself for hauling stuff I do not want in the back of the truck. You can leave the platform on the truck at the field as the tail gate opens above it after the wagon is out.

RE: How do you roll? - Field support equipment
Don't have access to pictures right now but I use a 4 wheel yard cart that I got form Home Depot. Very similar to the ones mentioned by phjoker and highhorse. But I do not have a trailer. I haul my jets in my pickup which has a shell camper. So to haul the cart I have one of the platforms that fits into the trailer hitch receiver of my truck. It is aluminum (except for the hitch receiver part) and is the perfedt size for my 4 wheel wagon/cart. I just load everything up in the wagon and using two simple boards for ramps roll the whole thing up onto the platform. The platform has sides which hold the wagon in place. Will haul up to 500 lbs if you can stack that much on it. I can get pictures tonight if anyone is interested.

RE: Help with Tamjets Pipe in Carf Flash
I just used 5 hardwood blocks about an inch long. Can't remeber the size but I think they were either 1/4 or 5/16 square. I think they were tapered a bit. These were glued with hysol around the edge of the tail cone. Has worked for over 150 flights for me. There are some pictures out there somewhere either on this thread or one of the Classic Flash threads
