RE: MY ULTIMATE MONSTER BASHDAY....
Cool! Did you have any problems mounting the t-maxx wheels onto the front stub axles?

Awsome work man. Its cool to see you got the angle grinder gearbox working. Looks like it handles the bumps pretty well too :) Next you will be putting a tuned pipe on it, won't you [:D]

RE: Full suspension buggy build
Thanks once again guys. DV - hmm that might have saved some time. Are those holesaws ok with cutting thick aluminium? This car is [i]sort of[/i] based on that car, but it is really the next stage of this build: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_7710838/anchors_7710838/mpage_1/key_/anchor/tm.htm#7710838 I was going to re-make the chainsaw powered car you posted the link to, with a trailing arm suspension setup on the rear, but it ended up being too complicated. I also decided that with summer not long away It would be nice to build something that can be used off road. Here are some more pictures of the rear end. Bolting on the shocks was too easy [:D]. The LST shocks will hopefully be strong enough for this application. I also need to get some nice drill-rod to make the outer hinge pins from. Next I will be making the suspension tower and the upper suspension arms. [image]http://lh5.ggpht.com/_FA5Mw2KBKN4/Sr4vzGk2MoI/AAAAAAAAASM/-Qn3l2S5D7g/s800/DSC04793.JPG[/image] [image]http://lh4.ggpht.com/_FA5Mw2KBKN4/Sr4wHuUnDwI/AAAAAAAAASQ/-srVRoofxRc/s800/DSC04794.JPG[/image] My biggest concern for this project is the driveshafts...the 1/8th scale ones that are on there at the moment will not last long im sure. I might end up having to use baja driveshafts [:o]

RE: Full suspension buggy build
Thanks guys :) The bearing blocks were made using the following process: First, I drilled all the holes using a drill press (as you can see in the first picture). Next I removed the semi-circle shaped chunk of aluminium using a hacksaw and a pair of pliers. Then, using a tungston carbide cutter (the one installed in the dremel) I removed the spikey chunks of aluminium left behind from the previous step. Then, I rounded off the edges using the file with the curved surface and the stone cutter. Finally, I used the sanding/polishing bit with some wd-40 sprayed on it to achieve a nice smooth surface for the bearing to sit on. [image]http://lh6.ggpht.com/_FA5Mw2KBKN4/Sr3j3h0SSXI/AAAAAAAAARY/0YiQUW95OtA/s800/DSC04787.JPG [/image] The other, flat file is the one I used to get a nice flat edge on all the parts. Also, the drill bit I have been using is a double sided pop-rivet bit, and is by far the most durable drill bit I have ever used...the sharp angle at which the tip of the bit has been cut makes it very accurate too [;)]

Full suspension buggy build
Hey everyone here is my latest project. I plan to make it with fully independent suspension, and it will be powered by either a chainsaw engine or a g260rc. It dosen't look like much at the moment, but hopefully when its finished it will resemble a 1/7th scale offroad buggy [:D]. As you can see, I have decided to start with the rear section of the car first: [image]http://lh3.ggpht.com/_FA5Mw2KBKN4/SrxyT8-L6PI/AAAAAAAAAPo/6dHVtU-wJfU/s800/DSC04764.JPG[/image] [image]http://lh3.ggpht.com/_FA5Mw2KBKN4/Srx2NctxTfI/AAAAAAAAAQk/jr2gJn1s5OA/s800/DSC04778.JPG[/image] [image]http://lh3.ggpht.com/_FA5Mw2KBKN4/Srxy2VYRPoI/AAAAAAAAAPs/xYX-jqn2XC4/s800/DSC04770.JPG[/image] [image]http://lh5.ggpht.com/_FA5Mw2KBKN4/SrxzNjz2UyI/AAAAAAAAAPw/LHI0yl0oA_M/s800/DSC04776.JPG[/image] The suspension arms are made from square-section steel and the hinge pins are 5mm thick. The rear hubs took a while to make, but they are nice and beefy [:)] I don't really mind how heavy the car's components end up being, as long as they are [b]strong[/b]. More updates should be posted soon.

RE: Another homebuild project.....
dc2 - Thanks man, that means alot to me. I will *hopefully* begin working on this project again in about 3 weeks. The layout of the rear end has taken a long time to sort out...there are just so many restrictions to work around [:@] It probley sounds like I change my mind too often but I just really, really want this car to work properly right from the beginning. You will see the dilema I am in when the car begins to take form. DV - Im still unsure of what will happen with the front end of this car. Chances are I will end up changing that too. I think the suspension arms I made before might be a little too short. For now I have decided to focus my attention on the rear end of the car first. Once that part of it is completed, it will hopefully give me the motivation to begin working on the front end too [:D]

RE: Another homebuild project.....
Well, kind of. I have spent some time making the templates for the rear suspension setup that will be used on this car. I will no longer be using the chainsaw engine, due to problems I had with mounting a sprocket to the reverse thread on the crankshaft [&o]. I will be using the zenoah instead. Using a new engine also calls for a different transmission setup too...which will now consist of only two sprockets and a chain. In other words, the layout of the chassis will be entirely different. It won't look as cool with all the nice gears and the massive powerplant shown in the pictures above, but will be lighter and make more power [;)]

RE: Chainsaw Powered Car STAGE II
I tend not to use my angle grinder. Too noisy and scary [:D] BTW, you *might* want to put a 3rd bearing and mount in the middle of the axle next to the sprocket. [IMG]http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c193/cul8term8/Stabiliser1.jpg[/IMG] I found that without the third bearing on my car, the axle would flex under acceleration and screw with the gear mesh. But I was using a very thin axle which didn't help [8|]

RE: Chainsaw Powered Car STAGE II
I really like the look of those engine mounts. They look very strong. What were you cutting the aluminium with? I have found that when cutting aluminium using a jigsaw (or anything of that type) you need to spray wd-40 onto the blade, otherwise the blade sticks.

That seems like quite a nice reciever. I wouldn't worry about it being second hand. But... It might be cheaper to buy the reciever and transmitter as a complete package elsewhere.

[quote]ORIGINAL: Dirty_Vinylpusher I've got my eye on [link=http://www.hpieurope.com/piw.php?partNo=80589&lang=en]THIS[/link] servo for the steering. But I've got another question regarding servos and recievers. Are they all compatible? Might be a silly question to all you RC veterans, but as you know I'm still a newbie.[8|] [/quote] Sorry I didn't see this post before [&:] That servo should be great. If it can steer a baja, it will have no problems steering you buggy. Im fairly sure that they are all compatible. I have never had any problems before.

I strongly suggest you don't get that servo!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I bought the exact same one once before and it stopped working after about 5 minutes of use. The Gears are good, but the electrics are horrible.

RE: Chainsaw Powered Car STAGE II
Uhh...not much progress on my buggy. I got the chance to drive a baja 5t with a zenoah engine installed...lets just say that I have come to the conclusion that the diff, drive axels and the rest of the transmission on that 1/8th scale chassis would last all but five minutes with that much power going through them [:D] So now Im considering putting the car back together with the echo engine and instead focus my attention on rebuilding my scratch built buggy. Hmm some other brands are JR, spektrum, multiplex and 'Ace rc' . One final important thing to consider is the type of reciever and transmitter to use. If you use an AM reciever/ transmitter (very cheap) you [i]might[/i] have to use digital servos, otherwise you will get alot of interference from the engine. This is just what I found when I built my buggy. If you don't want to get digital servos then you will most likely need an FM radio system.

RE: Chainsaw Powered Car STAGE II
Hey man good to see you back here [:D] A standard 1/10 scale servo should be able to handle the throttle and breaks. Depending on the amount of breaking force you want, you may want to consider a high torque servo. They usually cost about $25 (for standard) and about $50 (for high torque). Don't get any no-name servos, try to stick with good brands like futaba, Hitec etc. The steering servo will have to be quite beefy. Any of the 1/5th scale high torque steering servos should do the trick. These can be costly, but if you keep an eye out you can get them on ebay for about $60 used.
