RE: Need Some Advice From the Experts
kfx 450 - I am certainly no expert but, for the exact same reasons you mentioned in your post, we are flying an old school pattern EU1A to practice the maneuvers you described in your post - the EU1A, like most of the old school pattern planes, provides jet like performance and the precision needed to practice for our the expensive sport jets i.e., Bandit ARF and Electra. The EU1A while being a rare model has been a real practice work horse "jet" for us for many years. We also have a HABU 32 but find that it is not as precise as the EU1A for practicing the precision maneuvers.

RE: BVM F-16
Completed BVM F-16 EDF conversion and first flew it with the conversion at the First In Flight Jet Rally in May of this year. Harley Condra worked on the 16 at First In Flight but I'm not sure if he actually saw it fly. Harley is a real gentleman and was very helpful resolving a main wheel problem. BV and many others saw it fly this past weekend at the Mid Summer Afterburner Jet Rally in Hamburg, PA. The BVM EDF conversion is very straightforward. We are using the BVM EVF 2 12s fan unit and the three 4s 65c 6600 mah Thunderpower batteries. We had been flying the F-16 with BVM 91 power. By comparison, the performance with the EVF is vastly improved - especially takeoff and vertical - and we typically fly off grass. Probably have 30 or so flights with EDF power. Not quite turbine level performance with the EVF, but very, very close. And the reliablilty factor now allows you to slow-fly the plane which is very important - although I cant seem to convince my 2 sons to try this - they dont want to waste the amps on slow flight. So much power that you will need to throttle back on some manuevers - like the max turn for example. With the EVF, flight times are 4:30 max. Make sure your landing gear is operating 100% - cycle the gear several times before each flight and refill - you may want to consider adding a gear fail-safe device or at least add an extra air tank for more volume. Also make sure your nose gear has the aluminum moving parts - not the black carbon fiber filled nylon - send it back to BVM for the mod. to aluminum. Also, make sure you have the aluminum nose gear flex arms - not the black plastic. Don't forget the stabilator re-inforcement shown in the manual - this applies to both the turbine and EDF conversions. If you have any questions on the flight characteristics, feel free to call Anthony 610-322-7456 or Steve 610-324-2928 or any questions about the plane itself and the conversion call me (sam) 610-436-5552.

orig. aero composites EU-1A, 30 years old, restored 2x, who knows how many flights/engines, currently with rossi 61/rossi pipe, 11x7.5, spring air gear, about 10lbs., flies every weekend - fast, smooth & precise, loud, smoke trails - lots of fun - good jet trainer - dont forget the semi-annual bearing changes and use lots of oil or those rare RE engnes wont last

RE: BVM F-86 EDF advice
The BVM EVF is your best choice. You will have no problems. Like everything else BVM does - the inlet ducting, EVF and thrust tube are all engineered as a system and should be installed and operated as such for optimal performance. BVM's customer service and local reps. are HUGE help when needed. Positive experieince with BVM Electra and F-16 have proven thuis to me. I am not a BVM rep. - just a customer. Not saying other systems wont work but, going with BVM you will be pleased with the results.

Sean, I've heard the the Avonds F-16 is a great flier. We fly at the Valley Forge field when were short on time and want to fly smaller sport models. Is is a very convenient location. Hamburg is fantastic field for jets. Email your phone number so we can discuss. samdimaio@aol.com or 484-401-6990. sam

ed, i dont know about the EU1-A's you've seen fly but, at 10lbs. with a YS60FR and 11x9 APC on 15% nitro, macs quiet pipe and spring-airs, my 20 plus year old EU1-A gets off the ground in a real hurry, tears up the old pattern routine, has true jet-like performance and its plenty quiet, too - i'd rather make a smok'in hole than put a 4-cycle in it sam

RE: Engine choice?
Currently flying my twice-retored EU-1A that I bought already built at a swap meet. It was originally powered with OS61VF, correct OS pipe and 11x7.5 zinger, 14K RPM on 10% nitro. Performance was just ok at about 10Lbs. dry - really had to manage the inertia to get it to perform properly. Switched last year to a well used SHORT STROKE YS60FR on the correct MAC muffled pipe, 11x7.5 zinger. Performance was dramatically improved - really made the EU-!A come alive. I still have not tached the YS to see what RPM its making on the ground but it does unload nicely in the air - what a machine! I have a couple of Rossi 61s and will try one of those in another EU-1A that i am restoring - i hear they scream also. Of the engines you've listed, I would go with the Rossi - just make sure you get the correct pipe and take your time establishing the correct tuned length and you wont be disappointed. The EU-1A is a large airframe for a sixty - keep it light by using contest grade balsa for the sheeting and monokote on the wings and tail and dont forget the cut-outs in the outer portion of the wing to save weight. I have not experimented with the long stroke engines in the EU-1A so am unable to comment on those.

BVM Electra Jet for ICDF
Might sound dumb BUT thinking about building Electra for Viojett BVM96 - is this feasible? Just dont have the cash right now for the electric stuff. But do have a a few new complete BVM ICDF units that are obviously not worth much, yet are still viable for jets. Thinking is that since the Electra is dimensionally similar to the Viper, perhaps it might be worthwhile to build as ICDF and then convert later. Anyone know if the inlet side OD on the EVF is same as the Viojett? The exit end of the EVF does not appear area ruled like the Viojett for obvious reasons but ............... Feed back please.

RE: EU1A
this has been my experience with my twice-restored EU-1A - my all time favorite prop plane. the EU-1A is a huge plane for 60. even if built light it needs a stronger engine than the OS. i've been flying mine for a couple of years with the OS61V with the OS pipe and 11x7.5 zinger and @ 14500RPM performance was just ok. when i switched last summer to the YS60FR and MAC pipe and Zinger 11x7.5 the EU-1A's performance was vastly improved - it was a different airplane. no longer feel the need to manage the interia anymore just to get through the maneuvers as compared to the OS. speed is way up, horizon to horizon knife edge flight are now no problem, phenominal vertical, huge loops . i havent tried other props yet or more nitro (currently running 5-10%). was so impressed with the performance gain i never bothered to tach the YS yet. do yourself a favor and save the OS for another smaller, lighter pattern ship like a phoenix 7 or 8, etc. the YS60FR is no longer maufactured but you will see them for sale on RCU or *bay. they are different to operate than a standard 2-cycle because of the built-in pump and pressurized fuel system, but it is not difficult if you follow the instructions. also, wrap your fuel tank with duct tape to prevent bursting from the pump pressure. find a new engine if you can (i found 2 NIB) because, except for bearings and pump diaphrams, parts such as gaskets, cranks and pistons/liners are very difficult to find. if you cant find a new one get a used one but make sure the piston/liner are ok - then just replace the bearings and the pump diaphram and you should be ok.

RE: Yellow F-16 turbine conversion from DF
Shawn, thanks for your advice - can you post the contact info. for Gary Mueller. Dumb question but, since a bypass is not needed, I assume there is no need for double wall pipe? Where can I get single wall pipe? Any trouble flying off grass with a P60SE? What kind of performance can be expected? Not interested in speed, only want to be able to perform scale demo-flight maneuvers.

Yellow F-16 turbine conversion from DF
Considering converting Yellow F-16C (latest version) from Df to turbine power (JetCat P-60). Is conversion realistic for a Yellow F-16 that is already built for DF? As the DF ducting leaves very little room for fuel tanks - are conformal tanks, or any tanks for that matter, available for this configuration? Is a bypass necessary or advised? Single or double wall pipe? Any help or advice, especially photos would be much appreciated.

RE: Best Current Rear Exhaust .60's
in my opinion, the old short stroke ys60fr is the most powerful rear exhaust 60 ever produced - no longer in production but you can find them on RCU and ebay every so often both used and NIB - wait for one to appear and get one - follow the set-up instructions and you will be in awe of the power with a large range of prop sizes and fuels - parts such as the diaphram and piston/sleeves are tough to find but this engine has proven to be extremely durable - just maintain the bearings, i.e. change when necessary and these engines will run a good long while

RE: ys two stroke problems
BE advised, pressure is the REAR fitting and must be connected to the tank VENT fitting. A check valve must be installed in the fuel line between the fitting and the tank. THe check valve must be installed with the direction of flow such that pressure can be applied to the tank but not allowed to exit the tank. YS recommends only 2 prop sizes: 11x7.75 or 11x8, the header length should be 3", your 1160 pipe and glow plug are correct. THe diaphram regulator screw on the bottom of the engine adjusts the low speed and initial setting from the factory is with the screw flush with the regulator body - adjust clockwise for lean and counter for rich. THe high speed needle initial setting is 3-turns open although mine will not run well above 1.5 turns.

RE: EU-1A Engine Choice
The EU-1A nose is extremely tight when using a 61 rear exhaust - I believe the OS 140 would be out of the question especially considering the height of the exhaust port relative to the crankshaft centerline - would position the tuned pipe well above the fuse tunnel. Unfortunately, the plane was designed exclusively around the 61 rear exhaust engines. I believe Rossi still manufactures the 61 rear exhaust and is a real powerhouse - don't use more than 5% nitro - too much compression.
