RE: Should I get a pilots license?
Hi t-max97, I say go for it. I had the opportunity to take flying lessons when I was 16-17. While I didn't earn a pilots license due to a lack of funds, it was still a great experience. I too was not sure about college. I went for a few years, but did not finish. I am now at a point where I make pretty good money, but it took me until my early 40s, and after going to trade school (Network Engineering). While you can succeed without a degree, and many people do not find work in their fields of study, having a degree of just about any type can still help you when competing with others for a position or for advancement, as it demonstrates your determination. Also, college is a place where you can discover your interests, which often can be the result of a course you would have never previously considered interesting. Also, if you do get your Pilot's License, and then choose to go to college, having a Pilot's license will probably be a great addition to your application!!! Scott

The Th is an Electric Fun Fly. The BBQ Fun Fly is on Sept. RD. There seems to be a lot of confusion this year about the date. As to why, it's a mystery to me.

Unfortunately, we lost a great pilot and aircraft restorer and a very rare Super Corsair today. Bob Odegaard was killed while practicing for the upcoming Valley City airshow in North Dakota.

RE: Sheeting done with Titebond & Heat
I used it with 3/32" sheeting on a Top Flite Spitfire and also on a sport plane. I like the method because I find it more controlled and not having a million pins stuck through the skins and framework. It's been quite a while since the last time I used the method but as I recall, I applied glue to the wing framing, then placed the skin on while still wet to transfer enough glue to the skin to mark it. Then I re-glued the frame for an even coat and applied glue to the matching areas on the skin. I don't think I would try it on anything thicker that 3/32". I've never had a problem with warpage or with de-lamination. It did take some work to get the skin to conform to the compound curves toward the wingtips on the Spitfire's eliptical wing. I used a covering iron to iron the skins on. The support tabs on the Top Flight kits I suspect helped to prevent warpage. If you had a wing with different jigging that allowed for more play, that could make a difference too. In all, I would use the method again. Scott

RE: Easy lines & rivets
One thing to keep in mind with the P-51 is that the rivets on the wings were filled and the wings were painted even on natural aluminum schemes. So unless it was a very weathered or repaired (or inaccurately restored like the P-51B, Macon Belle), the rivets were not visible on the wings. Screwheads, however were visible. Afterall, a screwhead does not work very well if they are filled.[;)] BTW, I've had pretty good results with the chart tape process. Also, scribing does not work when replicating overlapping joints. But I have to say, Leroy, that's the best scribing job I've seen. Scott

One more recommendation is good lighting. Do not under estimate it's importance. Good lighting is essential to producing a good product and helps eliminate error and fatigue. Scott

RE: First Advanced kit build, recommendations on tool purchases recommended
I too have a scroll saw that I don't really use. My go-to tools are the band saw, belt/disc sander and the ol trusty dremels, both corded with flex shaft and cordless stylus. From there, skys the limit on what to get for tools. I have from the typical hand tools to a lathe/mill and CNC router. They all get used more that a scroll saw. I'm sure the day will come that I will be glad I have it, but that day has yet to come. Scott

RE: Are we Geeks?
ORIGINAL: sjpateys Yes that's a good point, about Asia catching up and going the same way as us. Either way it looks like we're screwed. I can see a situation where we all end up unable to comprehend the science behind our modern world, as todays kids might be able to use their Iphones etc like an extension of themselves but do they know how the thing works? No. Â
While the percentage of people interested or pursuing science and engineering is in decline, the number of people pursuing engineering and science has still been on the incline. In the future, I'm sure that this trend will also go negative, but it doesn't necessarily spell the end for our standard of living. Again, it is the need that is important. In the industrialized world, food is overly abundant (hence the problem with obesity), but the number of people who produce food has been on a steady decline for perhaps a hundred or more years. There is no longer the need for a majority of people to be involved with growing our food. What is does do, however, is to makes us more vulnerable to and more difficult to recover from natural, political, technological or economic disaster. We've seen a mild version of that over the last decade. To bring it back to 'Geek', Geek is the new esoteric and our hobby is more esoteric every day. Even if we are not yet Geeks, we are becoming Geeks. After all, it's a perfect hobby for geeks. So many geeky, esoteric aspects to explore. There's the obvious woodworking, but also metalwork and machining, composites, electronics, programmable ICs, and the list goes on... I already have a dedicated workshop with the obvious band saw, drill press, disk and belt sander, but even some of the more unusual like a mini table saw and CNC router. It's a geeks Paradise... at least to this geek.
ORIGINAL: sjpateys Unfortunately we live in an age where being thick is actally preferable by the mainstream, its far more important to be attractive and wealthy- Kim Kardashian and co. are prime example. Â Look at how everything including music is dumbed down and infantile. We have adults dressing and talking like teenagers, because of reality TV etc. Why would these retards admire and have an interest in science and engineering? Its why the western world is falling behind Asia. Â We live today in The Age of The Stupid. Read The Time Machine by H.G. Wells. It prophesised what is happening today very neatly. Â
While it's true that the admiration and interest in science and engineering has declined in percentage of the population, the need to, order to maintain a comfortable standard of living in western civilization, has proportionally decreased. I don't think that it's so much that we are falling behind Asia, rather I'm sure that as they catch up to the western world in technology and standard of living, the same will most likely happen to them. Another SciFi title that comes to mind is the Foundation Series by Isaac Asimov.

RE: Where are America's best flying fields
If you are going to go through the Los Angeles area, you can stop by the Apollo 11 field at the Sepulveda Basin. It is in the northwest corner where the 101 and the 405 freeways meet. From the 405, you can exit at Burbank Blvd and head west to the first intersection, Woodley Blvd. Turn right (north) on Woodley and the field will be on the left hand side. The entrance is on the north end of the field. This is a public park open to all. Several clubs operate out of this field with the largest being the San Fernando Valley RC Flyers, with 350 members. August 4th will be an All Scale FunFly open to any RC based on a full sized craft. On the 19th of August, I will be hosting a Fun Fly and Swap Meet. It is free to SFVF members and $10 for non members. These are sanctioned AMA events are only open to AMA members. All other days in August are open to the general public. Weekends can be quite exciting. Scott Ramos Secretary, SFVF.
