Anylink Tx-R and JR XF631 TX
Has anyone tried to use the Anylink with the XF631. According to the TX compatibility chart the XF421 is compatible but the XF631 is not listed. Since they are in the same family I was hoping that the combination would work. It does have the trainer/DSC port on it. I however don't want to order one without knowing that it will indeed work. This seems like a nice way to continue to use the old 631 for park flyers. Thanks Doug

New viper fuse question
I picked up a viper fuse recently and began the usual modifications. I peeled the covering away from firewall and noticed that the forward part of the fuse and the firewall is glassed on the outside. Is this new? Or has it been this way and we still need to provide more reinforcement? Also the glass on the inside on the nose looks much better that the previous one that I had. Thanks Doug

Hey there Eddie Plenty of photos up on our website. http://www.rcbarnstormers.org/racing.php Since I don't have a plane at the moment and something else came up for that weekend, I'll not be there. However, by the time the Spring races roll around I will be stocked and ready for racing again. Doug

RE: Better late than never - RC Barnstormers Spring Race
Yes, a day of carnage it was. Looks like there will be some building in the next few weeks before Wichita. The race was in the bag for Mike Tallman until bad air in heat number six took him out going around pylon #3. That left a fly-off between Gordon McWilliams and Mo Vereecke, with Mo taking the fly-off and the win. Gordon McWilliams finished in second with Mike Tallman taking third and fast time of 1:23.47. Here are the complete results. Doug

Hey Le fou you might also try the local hardware store. I can usually get 1/4 dowel from Ace or True Value. I can usually find it as well at Lowes/Home Depot. Doug

Don't know if you got any info on clubs in the area yet. From where you are in Waldo the closest ones would be either at Lake Jacomo, with KCRC, or at Longview Lake rc sport flyers. I fly down at Hillsdale lake with the RC Barnstormers. http://kcradiocontrol.com/ http://www.rcsportflyers.com/ http://www.rcbarnstormers.org/ Doug edited to add, we don't have any combat down at the Barnstormers.

RE: The Long Awaited Ultra Sport 60 Build Thread
OK, so I am in the process of building up my US60; first build of the US anything but i've been building kits since '87. Here is my problem... I built the first wing half and plan on installing retracts. I moved the retract location out to between the 4th and 5th ribs. I stareted to work on installing the retract rails but they are about 1/16 to 1/8 too short. I built the wing over the plans and everything lines up. I have the rib doublers in place as well. Has anyone had this issue before? I plan on just cutting out some new ones. I also plan on using B&D pneumatic retracts (these are new); any issues with them? All for now, Thanks

RE: RC Barnstormers Fall Race 2008
Unfortunately I am one local, that is not quite local at the present time. I wish I could be there but I will miss the RCB race and most likely the KCRC race. That makes three of the four local races that I had to miss this year. Hope y'all have a good time, few cuts, and low times. On a good note, at least I'll have one plane ready for next year. RE: FAA Restriction
Hoss, that is interesting that you should post that. It might be interesting to note that every presidential or VIP TFR that I have seen has a restriction on model aeronautics within the hot zone. This is usually a 30NM radius with the center located on some VOR radial some distance from the VOR. I have included a link to a current TFR for San Antonio. http://tfr.faa.gov/save_pages/detail_8_5933.html TFRs affect me on the job on occasion so I usually know about them. For one presidential TFR, our club field was within the 30NM radius. I brought it up to one of the club leaders as something that should be addressed; unfortunately it was ignored. I would hate for model aeronautics to have a problem because modelers are violating TFRs, however most people don't know about them. More importantly though, is that the information is not sent to the modeling community. I don't ever get a standard briefing before I go to fly models. :) Doug

After a long hiatus I competed in my first pylon race in 16 years in April and I am finally getting to the point where I can fly my Shrike without my knees knockin' too much; and that was finally without use of the throttle until I was ready to land. RE: Composites
Hey Trevor, I can understand what you are saying, but then comes the next issue. Pilot A can afford the best equipment, best aircraft, has two or three back-up aircraft. These aircraft come right in at the weight limit, fly perfectly, etc. Pilot B has one airplane that he built himself, no backup because he can't afford a second engine. Pilot B can never be competitive because his equipment just doesn't stack up. As Pilot B, I think at that point I will give up because I can't, or won't, spend lots of money to keep up. AMA 424 racing is designed to help upstarts, like me, get involved in racing. As it is I am racing against folks who fly 428 at the National level. I can't keep up now, but at least I know it is not because I have an equipment handicap. If I keep with it, I hope to be able to challenge them someday. However, 424 racing is an AMA event. Don't you gents in NZ have the option to make up your own rules and allow what you want in the racing classes? Doug

RE: Composites
For what it is worth, and please correct me if I am wrong. As I look at the AMA rules for 424 racing, the only mention of deviation from 428 racing is the wings and tail. It is my understanding that a composite fuselage is allowed, but the wings and tail need to be wood or wood over foam. So at least from that aspect, a glass fuse would speed up the build process somewhat and make straigher fuses, but the foam wings keep the cost down. As to the comment about more money than time, I don't have much of either but I have less money. I know several others in my area who race and are in the same financial shape as I am. If I have to spend loads of money, I am out. As a racer (I use the term lightly) who started 17 years ago and only raced a few times, who is now getting back into it, there is no way that I would start racing with a $500 composite winged aircraft. Yes, it might fly better, but until I can fly a tight course in the 1:20's, and keep up with the best racers in the class, having a top-notch aircraft won't matter a whole lot. In reality, if I want to stay racing in 424, I will probably be scratch building my own aircraft. because I know I will stuff a few [:)][:)][:@] It is the same as purchasing a set to top-of-the-line Nike/Ping/Adams golf clubs when the best you can shoot is 120. It won't make you a better golfer, only one with more expensive equipment. Those are my thoughts. Doug

Hey AJ and the rest of KCRC. Thanks for the great fun. Everything was well run, and I was glad that we got done as early as we did. I however, forgot the sunscreen and paid for it. :) It has been 17 years since the last time I raced around pylons. It was a great time and I am looking forward to the races in the fall. RE: Futaba S3114 servo reviews?
Hey Tony I see no one replied to your post on the 3114s. All I can give is what I know. I recently built a Cermark Lil' Banchee. I have HS55s for the ailerons and the 3114s for rudder and elev. I like the centering and speed of the 3114s better. To me, it just seems to be a better servo. I know others may disagree as this is my preference. Since Tower has them for the same price (and even if the 3114s were a dollar, or two. more) I will buy the 3114s from now on. Hope this helps, Doug

RE: 424 Race in Kansas City, April 26th
Mike, if you look on the flyer (left page) that AJ included in the link, it tells us that the Thunder Tiger Pro .40 is the only legal engine for AMA 424 racing. As long as life doesn't get in the way, I will see you at the race. It will be my first time racing in 17 years. See you then. Doug S.

RE: TF Sea Fury Box o Balsa Questions
Ron, there are several things to be aware of when building the Sea Fury. As it has been stated above, you will end up putting a lot of nose weight to get it to balance correctly. I am currently in the finishing stages of one that I inherited already framed up. If you have to add nose weight anyways, it may as well be useful weight. If you can swing a 1.20 4C that can help out with the extra weight, and a little more oomph as well. Do some research on here and also on RCSB; in both places you will find many answers to your questions. The main thing that you can do to help yourself is to build the tail as light as possible. If you can add a few lightening holes in the ribs for the tail that will help some. You don't need the engine when you frame up the fuselage. You will have to know what retracts that you will be using prior to building the wing, since there are different rails for the different retracts. I have the non-scale Century Jet retracts. The struts seem great, however there is more side-to-side play in the retract body itself. I wish I had a way to tighted it, but it does not seem possible. When retracted the struts stick up higher than the wing skins. I had to make a non-scale arch to the gear doors so they would close flush. I hope this helps. Doug Good luck, and add some photos on the build process.
