RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Hi guys. Opening the door to get to switches for me is a hassle. It's just a hard angle with the plane on the ground. In addition, the door and hinges have not proven to be very robust. If I ever start using the roof window routinely (it's usually off and I just stick my hand in), I"ll move switches outside. Got Saito 180 back..... $100 repair. Case and bearings in lower end. Rethinking fuel (had just started runing 5% Omega instead of 15%), after-run (which I never use) and storage. Horizon tech recommended trying after-run and then storing with engine in upright postion. Now, if I could just access the venturi (!). Have fun. Scott

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Paul Yah,,I use a fuel dot not a valve. Standard 3 line set-up only with larger diameter tubing. Have Sullivan large bore stopper and cluck and supply lines up to a inline filter then the smaller line to the carb. Maybe I should go all the way with the large line? I had never heard the point about large bore tubing on the crankcase vent. That's easy to do. Thanks! Scott

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Paul Thanks for the info. So let me get this straight.. I don't need the Sullivan $50 rig with the big panel to mount and all. You've had success just going to the glow plug with 1.5 VDC constant, I assume switched? I can do that! I like the big 4 stroke sound, running mine with just the flex pipe....but I also like rolling this Decathlon on a big straight down line..finding out I have no engine at the end..well thank goodness for momentum! Any suggestions welcome, 7 years in this hobby ain't enough to play expert. Scott

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Paul Yah..getting in there to tighten things up is a hassle. I probably tighten them with every couple hours of flighttime. Once you remember which combination of extensions and such work, it's not too bad. Another problem for me was with the wind strut tabs in the fuse. They wanted to keep loosening and almost wiggling out. I solved the problem by buying a piece of 1/2" wide aluminum bar about 1/8" thick from the hardware store and ran a continuous strut tab/bar from one side to the other. Bend a little, fit ,repeat then drill for the cap screw. No more problems with that. My Saito 180 went to Horizon today. Just across town for me. I gotta figure out why it's dead-sticking or I'm gonna try a Sullivan on-board ignitor. Have fun. Scott

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Jim I'm "pants on" all the time. My guess is the pictures you see here are those "Got To Fly It Now!!" variety. The pants actually take the punishment of grass field landings and patch with a little glass cloth easily. I use the 4" dubro inflatable wheels, Sullivan and Dubro hardware EVERYWHERE else. For as engines go...mines a Saito 180 4 stroke. Honestly, I'd rather have more power. But with 75+ flights, I report no bad habits from this bird. She's just starting to look a little tired. Good luck.

Good luck Joe. I re-seal my stars every now and then. Has not been a big problem. Please keep us posted on the fix you propose. I think this is a sturdy, well flying bird. The 36 will be plenty of power. I use a Saito 180 4-stroke. I'll be taking mine to Joe Nall for the 3rd time this May. Peace Scott

RE: Don Smith plans P26 Peashooter
Hello Anyone compared the Santich plans with the Jim Pepino plans? The Santich have no flap area and are (to my semi-trained eye) not very detailed as to servo mounting, engine mounting. On the other hand Fiberglass Specialists (FS) have the cowl and pants. Wonder if the FS parts would fit the 80"WS Pepino bird? Any comments appreciated. Thanks

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
bkyrdfler I gotta tell you. The covering on this plane needs to be carefully ironed down for sure. I also keep an eye on it and re-apply the iron every now and then. I guess you could recover, but I think it'd be more hassle then it's worth IMHO. This ARF is not the same quality covering as my Great Planes stuff for sure (building the big Stearman right now), bit I'd build it and fly the pants off it if I were you. I think the DLE30 is a great choice unless you plan to prop-hang. Saito 180 does mine just fine. Good luck.

RE: My parkzone HABU
Hi lou1947 I bought my Habu BNF for just over 300 locally. Same place has PNP for 230. Probably free ship to you. Just didn't think I could finish the F86 for near that price (especailly with PZ parts). Habu's a bit bigger and my eyes are 56. In all honesty the Habu's still in the box and I'm in Urbana IL....so I'm depending on the universal good word on the Habu flight envelope. Being right here in RC Mecca I use a lot of, get Great service from and trust HH's "Just Fly" designs. Have fun!

Hope it works out bradleyban. I used Sullivan and Dubro large dia. lines, tank stopper set, clucks and etc. all the way up to the Saito 180 carb and then used a Sullivan adapter to go down one size to get to the carb. Don't know what your Saito needs, but I couldn't find much reason not to up-size.

I think mine (which is a couple years old) had them cut out already. Not the top window however. I just left an eight to a quarter inch of covering on the inside of the window opening and ironed them down. Good luck.

Absolutely! If you want to take this thing vertical, you best go Big Engine. My question is why? My favorite YouTube video and pretty much the style I try to mimic can be found on YouTube, title: Dr. Bill Blank in his Super Decathlon **LaCrosse WI**...matter of fact I'm gonna watch it now.

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Hi Luiz Loops from level 1/2 throttle flight are easy (inside or outside). Not enough power to hold knife-edge for long. Good inverted flight. I can carry vertical for maybe three hundred feet at full throttle depending on entry speed, I start pretty slow... I don't like to load the wing that much. I spend a lot of time practising smooth loop lines, Cuban-8 (reverse too) and downline rolls. It will fly the 09 Basic IMAC sequence. Stall turns a thing of beauty. I do not know the RPM with the 16x8. I tune a little rich and just fly it. Best of luck.

Luiz Saito 180 in mine for 2 seasons now. Nice scale power and sound. I use a 16x8 prop and 15% fuel. Did buy a lot of giant scale Dubro stuff to increase the strength of my set-up. Good luck.

Jason I may have been one of those guys. I'm Scott, bearded , white hair. You may be the guy who gotth last one Dan had in the box. He sold his floor model within the next 2 hours I believe. Hope the build goes well. I like mine. Had engine problems at Joe Nall, but it was a gas watching everyone else fly. Watching Andrew Jesky fly his new aerobat was worth the price of admission. Never saw anyone so smooth and precsie in his style. Peace Scott

Sorry you guys are having such problems. 12 flights on the new one and all seems OK. Did redo hardware w/ Dubro. Wish the door fit better. I can tell the new SU-31 I'm starting from Great Planes has a higher quality coat; however, my first SD from RC Guys went through a season and a half (before I drove it into the ground) with no tears or rips beyond normal.

Super8 I have had some ground handling problems also. Current set-up....pretty aggressive rudder throw (high rates set HIGH for stall turns), I make sure I'm moving before I try to turn, blip the throttle. If it's windy, it can be quite a circus getting 'er back to the pit. Scott

RE: H9-F6F Hellcat 60 ARF
mrsdan Think you're on the right track. I did a little more epoxy/balsa re-enforcement to the firewall top then maybe you did, but it'll be strong enough I'm sure. I went w/ two retract servos (takes a little wing cutting, but the area is covered "in-flight") at first, just felt stronger and easier to adjust. There's a pic here somewhere on this forum. I then really fell in love w/ the LADO retract system..prettty spendy by the time I added Robostruts. Re: cooling. I ended up w/ a medium size shark smile on the lower cowl, used the plastic radial as instructed and mine's just fine (Saito91). The 100 will be nice, makes the 3 blade prop (Master Airscrew 14x7 is what I'm using) work just fine. Yah a 2 blade is more efficient...3 blade just says Warbird to me. Shimming the retracts forward and having plenty up UP on the elevator during landing will help with the nose-in's. Have fun. Scott

I don't. There's quite a bit of room in the fuse. Running the engine in the suggested 7 oclock posityion, you get a pretty straight shot athe bottom of the cowl. Give it a whirl and post pics! Scott

RE: H9-F6F Hellcat 60 ARF
Thanks for the reminders C-Jock. I rebuilt the stab on mine and pretty much fling it around w/ no fear. IT does look a lot better w/ the color on top correct. I run 2300 JR packs in my stuff, just got used to buying them. Figure the extra margin of safety ('specially since I DID go w/ the LADO retracts) is worth the 5 bucks or so difference. Saito 91 in mine...it's pretty much to the firewall quite a bit of the time..if this thing didn't look and sound so great at a full speed pass I'd probably have more restraint. Going the Robart oleo's for the spring. Just can't keep the wires from shaking. Happy New Year Scott
