RE: One Tough FFF Delta...Build It!
arsenic0 - it's probly good you revived this old thread.. it's still very relevent.. i still have a mugi flyable.. but havent had it out for a long time.. i'll add that to my list of things to do in the near term! i always put my battery and electronics inside the fuse.. i've had some very violent nose in crashes and never damaged a li-poly yet.. usually i use some scrap fff for bracing/formers inside to provide more room for everything.. as for motor mounts.. i have always just cut three 1.25" x 1.25" x 1/8" light ply squares.. i glue two of them together back to back.. which makes it 1/4" thick to match the fff.. then epoxy the 3rd square to it to make a "T" .. i just screw an outrunner to that.. i'm not sure if a 2408 mounts that way or not.. hot glue works to glue the MM in place.. i started using nothing but hot glue to build a mugi with... makes construction got fast and it's just as durable as anything else good luck.. they are a blast to fly!

RE: hawk pro drive gear lube?
Thanks for the reply Syclic.. I hovered a tank through it last night and it already sounds better than the first tank.. I'm getting the gyro dialed in better and feeling more comfortable with it.. The nylon gears were an area where I wasn't sure what was best for them..The Hawk Pro manual leaves out so much info.. I have copies of the Hawk Sport pdf's also. I'm trying to soak up as much info as I can. Living in Southwest Kansas where there are more cows than people doesn't leave me many resident heli experts to gain knowledge from. So far so so good.. practice practice sim sim practice :) Thanks again!

hawk pro drive gear lube?
just test flew my hawk pro yesterday for the first time.. i could really hear the drive gears working and it got me wondering if there should be some lube used on them.. i lubed the tail drive gears as per instructions..but i dont think the instructions said anything about it main drive gears.. it seems like something should be used there to stop premature wear.. dry graphite? lithium grease? any suggestions would be appriciated.

RE: EI conversion questions
i was looking at UnitedHobby to see what they had to offer since i'm planning an order in the near future.. they have a 4amp UBEC with a warning "beep" when the battery gets to 3 volts per cell.. it costs 11 bucks before shipping... i'll also look at the fma site as well [link]http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=2160[/link] my 1200 2cell is an older 8C pack.so it should handle an 800mah peak draw just fine.. things are coming together nicely.. it's a little work to go through with an old "boat anchor" of a motor... but i'm learning as i go and knowledge is priceless [8D] thanks for the info AV8TOR!

RE: EI conversion questions
The seller on ebay has contacted me three times varifying information about my spark plug and making sure I am getting exactly what I need.. He seems very knowledgable.. his abay name is syssaaircraft and I can highly recommend purchasing from him. I took all the parts off my motor last night and weighed the flywheel, magneto and spring starter.. They weighed in at 1lb 2oz ... I'm either going to use the original motor mount and lighten it up as much as I can.. or else use standoffs.. the ignition will probably add back 6-8oz I'm thinking. has anyone had good luck using AAA NiCD or NiMH packs? I would estimate I fly much less than 2 hours at a time since I always take more than one airplane.. I'm thinking the next place to look at loosing weight will be in the pack used to fire the ignition.

RE: EI conversion questions
Well I ordered it.. I got the 14mm plug size.. this looks like it will be a fun project.. this US41 has always ran excellent.. it's just a heavy beast.. I'm hoping to shed about a pound of weight.. I'll probably use a 1450ma NiMH for the ignition pack.. It's installed on a Kangke Cap 232 that prior to this modification weighed in at 14.5 lbs... it flew pretty nice.. just had that heavy feeling.. 75 bucks is worth it to me. When I start doing the conversion I'm sure I'll have more questions.. getting the timing right will be a big concern.. Thanks to everyone that responded!! anymore advice you can give will be greatly appriciated!

RE: EI conversion questions
Thanks for the replies so far.. it's definately a help I've got the flywheel off and I took a picture of the shaft.. the shaft is tappered.. and for this reason.. the idea of using a hole saw to cut a hub from the discarded flywheel sounds like a great idea.. (I'll use a drill press) I can just drill a hole in the fabricated hub and red loctite the magnet in.. drill and tap two small holes on the aluminum end cap to screw down the bracket that holds the EI's magnet.. and I'm off to the races.. unless I'm missing something.. I'm still grasping for all the advice I can get here before tackling this project.. the EI on ebay can be ordered with the 14mm plug also one more question.. can the shaft that protrudes out the back be cut off flush in order to save more weight?

EI conversion questions
Hey guys.. I got a few questions about converting my US41 to electronic ignition.. hope you can help Ebay has this Rcexl ignition system for $75 .. that seems like a great deal to me.. but I'm a bit nervous about a few aspects of the conversion The listing states " You provide your favorite [b]switch[/b] and 4.8 battery and [b]a hub[/b] for the special magnet that is included." Is there a place to purchase a hub that will work with my engine? and what "switch" would you recommend I use? also... since the spring starter will be deleted...would there be an advantage to removing the aluminum motor mount and replacing it with standoffs? I'm trying to lose as much weight as possible.. I'll post a pick of what all comes with this ignition.. any help would be greatly appriciated!

RE: Anyone built Starduster Too? RCM #1070
hey! coincidently.. we just maidened the starduster too i posted about in 2005.. (it's now my buddy's).. i think it weighs in at about 25 or 27 pounds with the quadra 42.. the 42 just barely had enough power to give it what i would call 'scale power' .. once we got it leaned a little.. and the controls set up right.. it flew really nice.. no bad habits at all.. one guy commented that if he didn't know it was a model.. he would swear it looked like a full scale starduster flying buy.. this thing was built a loooong time ago.. and built heavy.. there are so many places you could shave the weight down.. even with ailerons on top and bottom wings.. it still has a pretty slow roll rate.. id' be interested in knowing how it flies with more power.. so if you build it..be sure to report back!..

plane suggestions for micro motors
i ordered two small motors today in an attempt to get into the micro plane facet of this hobby.. one motor is a 2150kv 19g motor turning a 5x3 to 7x3 prop.. the other is a 1300kv 33g motor which will turn an 8x4 prop.. i want to run both motors on 2s lipo's (500 - 800mah) my problem is finding a suitable plane for my gear.. i have some 4g servos and a 15amp ESC.. i'm thinking something in the AUW of 200g or less... i like the idea of building it myself.. either balsa or flat foam would be fine.. but i would love a great ARF too if one exists.. i want it light with good vertical performance i've been looking at the radical rc planes and wondered if there were plans out there for simular sized planes...(micro stick/mini stick etc) i guess if i have to i'll just get out some fff and put something together.. but i'd rather put my time into something i know works right.. any suggestions from you guys that fly small electrics would be appriciated.. thanks!

hey arty.. thanks! im using the just go fly 400DF motor.. with a 5.7x3 apc prop and a polymax (www.unitedhobbies.com) 1550 3 cell the hills are approximately 2 hours west of here at the base of the colorado rocky mountains.. the trees knew what was good for them and took root in other desirable areas that actually get rain.. although we have been in a wet cycle here lately.. i know its only mother nature temporarily screwing with our heads....the worst part about living in this area is that you see a town about 20 minutes before you get there.. so it feels like you are driving realllllly slowly i made detachable landing gear for it last night and did a test flight.. they worked nice.. so now its an "amphibizumi".. if the wind would cooperate tonight i would try to see if it will lift off of water what has happened to our fearless leader on this thread? RE: One Tough FFF Delta...Build It!
the attached picture is an example of one fuse side.. i hot glued both sides to the wing before gluing the nose together then making sure it comes together on the center line.. i placed the wing/fuse on the sheet of flat foam and traced its contour to make the top and bottom fuse caps...make sure you make your fuse sides about 1/2" thinner than you want the finished size to be because of the top and bottom.. i put a few formers on the inside to add strength.. just enough to hold the shape and be tough enough in a rough landing.. the black and white covering is sign vinyl.. the blue is econocote.. or towercote i cant remember.. i think the light iron-on converings are lighter than the sign vinyl what i am unsure about is where i put the 'step' on the bottom of the center float.. on a regular float plane it needs to be right on the CG or a little aft.. but if i were to use that rule for this plane..(because of the swept wings) the step would be about 5 inches from the back... im hoping it works alright.. maybe later this week ill get a chance to ROW.. i have plenty of power to help break the suction the water causes.. so we'll see

RE: One Tough FFF Delta...Build It!
hey onewoo.. thanks! ill try to give some more info here.. i wasnt good about taking pics during the build because i wasnt sure if it was going to even work out.. now i wish i had the vertical stab/motor mount is constructed of 1/4" balsa sticks around a doubled 1.25x1.25x2" lite ply motor mount stick.. then the whole thing is sheeted with 1/16" balsa sheet .. the 2" long mount might be overkill and feels a little heavy.. i think 1.5" would have been as good.. its all very sturdy.. the 1/16" sheet balsa extends out to form a hollow area for the motor wires to feed down and into the wing.. then its capped with a piece of triangle stock to conceal the wires.. the attached picture hopefully shows how its put together i just made the regular zumi wing (37" span).. without the top sheet doubler (or bottom).. the top of the center sponson/float acts as the center doubler.. the servos are in the sponson mounted right in front of the wing.. i made a seperate hatch for access to them [link=http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=306404]The Twinkle[/link] was my inspiration for this build.. and soon theKM will have depron plans ready.. i just didnt have patience to wait.. and wanted a little larger version.. on his forum he has good information about the downthrust needed.. i just took a guess and it seems about right.. id say at least 10 degrees.. here's some pics... any more info needed just ask

vital - i dont have a lot of experience with a 400 motor direct drive.. but im pretty sure the weak link in your system is the 5 cell battery.... you would have much better results with 7 or 8 cells .. i cant recommend a prop for direct drive.. but that is also pretty important to having good performance.. maybe FiveString or someone else can suggest a good combination.. but the first thing i would change is the battery.. you will notice a world of difference

RE: One Tough FFF Delta...Build It!
snuck in a maiden flight tonight when the wind unexpectedly dropped to a light breeze.. thankfully it flew great and all the building wasnt a waste of time.. browndodge - you are right.. at a point right before the stall.. if you slam the throttle it noses down..but not so much that tugging on the elevator wont pull the nose up.. and there is no difference between low throttle and high throttle trim.. so i think the thrust is about right.. ill just have to make sure not to feed in throttle too fast at a low and slow speed.. hand launching was a mistake.. it nosed over.. i killed the power and pulled full up.. it pancaked flat.. and luckily caused no damage other than some insignificant marks on the bottom of the float.. after that i just let it skid on the grass for take off and it lifts off nicely.. all in all im very satisfied.. now ill have to see how she handles water! cant wait!

thanks brown.. i remembered reading your posts about that downward force.. and in my searching for ideas i came across [link=http://keyboardmonkey.com/twinkle/index.html]The Twinkle[/link].. the designer used a bunch of downthrust to counteract that force.. and i tried to put a bunch of downthrust in my deisgn too.. i made the motor mount in a way that it shouldnt be too tough to experiment with different motor thrust angles if i need to.. i guess ill just have to wait and see.. i ran it around on the grass in my backyard a little today..and at one point it got light on the skids.. i think thats a good sign.. but im anxious to get some flight time on it.. the rudder mixed with exciting outside loops might be a blast.. or a crash.. lol

RE: One Tough FFF Delta...Build It!
congrats hauts! glad to hear it flew.. i never knew the true value of a glue gun till i started building with flat foam.. i even carry a 12 volt converter in my flight box so i can use the glue gun at the flying field! [:D] on my last mugi wing i used .157" carbon fiber rods just in the nose.. extending back about 10 inches along the leading edge and hot glued in place.. after repeated nose in crashes with the zumi i put the same type of rods in(bad CG) it had no damage.. even though it sunk the nose in the dirt about 3 inches.. so i am a believer in reinforcing the mugi nose now Arty - back a few pages i posted some rough measurements for building the ZuMi wing.. construction is just like a mugi otherwise.. it's a 'cut-n-fit' type of build so just make sure you leave enough extra to trim the folded top piece after gluing.. CG is 7" back form the tip of the nose i finished off the ZuMi-H2O last night.. now i either build some detachable wheels and test it off land.. or i wait till im around water.. i bet i fly off land first.. here's some completed pics..

welcome you first time RCU posters! it's good to see more people catching the fff mugi bug! arty - those pics look great.. i think the most challenging part of flying a mugi is getting used to the orientation of the model in flight.. at least thats what i blame all my crashes on [;)] hauts - i enjoyed your video.. and while i curse the area i live in for its lack of trees.. i think id be cursing the trees if i had to fly where you fly.. like arty, i think id be standing on the ground staring up at my model in the top of a tree i started building my flying boat on friday evening and should be finishing it up this week sometime.. the wing is exactly like the zumi.. i just added a pontoon to the center section and some sponsons on the wingtips.. ill post some pics later in the week

hey BendR, welcome home and back on the board.. yes..the mugi racing was fun.. but there was a catch.. like ass kicking contests.. it's only fair if you both wear the same boots.. and steve showed up wearing much MUCH larger boots than me.. he secretly ordered a new JGF 450TH motor and that thing is a screamer.. no way could my 400DF keep up.. but the good thing was.. he could only hold it wide open straight and level for short bursts.. but going straight up it acceleerated out of sight.. truly "insane" as the website states as steve said.. i managed to THWACK one of the 1.5" pvc pylons.. that was a shock.. i thought i had cleared it.. it just broke one of the fins off.. it flew mono-finned just fine.. i've since pawned it off to a friend and made a new mugi.. thats the last i have built.. waiting for the urg to build hits me again.. i am thinking of building a amphibious Frog from Hippo plans . i want something that can fly off water for when i go camping.. still searching tho.. happy building/flying/crashing/repairing to all [:)]

RE: One Tough FFF Delta...Build It!
finally some pics!! looking good 5! i cut 2" off the vertical stabs.. it made a world of difference.. so i guess they extended far enough back that drag.. or air pressure or something was causing the big trim changes with throttle.. i tried the 4.75x4.75 (103.9 mph) prop.. pssssshhh... not a big difference unless you consider decreased flight times.. the plane does have a pretty thick airfoil in the center section.. so im thinking i've max'd out the speed. back on thread topic: i put a KD22-10S motor in the mugi and took it to fly also.. what a blast.. it rolls like crazy.. turns-n-burns.. had a lot of fun just screaming around... i think i need to figure out some rules and get some ideas about "mugi racing" .. i think this could sweep the country!! it's hard to hurt them in crashes.. they are fast an manue... manuuuu...they turn real good [8D] .. the cost penny's and build fast...got any ideas about rules.. how large the course should be.. how tall of pylons? ... what do you think about 2"pvc pipe... roped and staked upright .. maybe 15' high.. with bright orange streamers at the top... there's isnt a huge difference in the speed between the JGF 3000kv..the KD 1200kv.. and a hacker clone 1050kv motor on the mugi.. but it might be nice to settle on an acceptable kv and prop range.. i think it sounds like fun! what do you guys think?

nice video 5! i like your winglets.. you need to put some pics up so we can have a closer look! thanks for the info max.. if the prop cant go faster than 50.. im sure the plane is in the low 40's i think this afternoon i will modify the vertical fins to see what affect it has.. i made them rake back a long ways.. maybe thats causing the pitch difference with throttle.. the other thing i am thinking is.. i had to use long servo arms to give the ez-connectors room to move.. i have end point turned down to about 30%.. and then d/r turned down to 40%.. maybe these micro servo's dont have enough resolution to center accurate enough given the small amount of movement the arms have. it just flies ..wierd.. compared to the other one.. i know thats like a woman saying the car goes "chugga chugga urrrrrrch" but wierd is the best i can discribe it.. lol i tried a 4.7x4.2 apc prop and didnt notice a big difference.. i have a 4.75x4.75 i will try... ill keep messing around till i squeak some more speed out of it.. zuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuumi [:D]

hope you get well soon brown.. i guess its that time of year for lots of bugs going around BendR - have a smooth trip! that steak and 'cold one' sounds good! they dont have those american delicacies over there? lol 5S - cant wait to see some aerial vids.. i've always wanted to do that just never had the equipment.. a few years ago i strapped a 35mm to a telemaster and took arial stills.. it would have helped if i wasn't in western kansas where the scenery is as exciting as watching grass grow i've had very good luck just hot gluing the vert. stabs in place.. after trimming the covering, including the thin film on the fff, and using my high temp glue gun.. it seems to melt the foam together.. its less brittle than epoxy.. i always put a good welding bead down both sides too. i weighed the zumi charger tonight.. came in at 17.5oz.. heavier than i thought it would be actually.. so now i have a benchmark for this new one.. i know it's going to be heavier.. but i hope not too much heavier! more pics! balsa servo plates done.. wings covered.. balsa TE stock lightened and ready to cover.. it's all coming together!

RE: One Tough FFF Delta...Build It!
lol@can-o-peas there's plenty of room to keep the tronics under the hatch in the center section.. i plan to mount the servos on sheet balsa plates that recess into the wing.. ill probably just hot glue them in place after i get everything set right. i didnt put a doubler on the bottom.. i took the top doubler to the leading edge and sanded it to blend in.. with the leading edge spars going to the nose.. the nose doubler wouldnt add anything i dont think the vinyl seems like it is about half the thickness of shelving paper.. cold.. it stretches about an inch then cleanly breaks.. with a bit of heat it turns to taffy.. i doubt it adds more than 10 grams on a wing this size.. (top and bottom covered) but thats just a guess.. here's a link to the post that got me interested in sign vinyl to cover foam.. it has a nice picture of the glossy finish.. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=1656735 original charger was 37" WS.. so this one at 40" isnt a big change.. might raise the aspect ratio a little which would make it roll a little slower but glide a little better.. i guess i could always chop the wing tips if i dont like it got snow again over night! [8|] but it will be melted off by the weekend when i hope to maiden this thing [:D]
