RE: weight VS stability
i just flew the plane without wheels in the park (the weather cleared up) and all i can say is WOW. It flew so much better i couldn't believe my eyes. Before to keep the plane airborne i had to apply 3/4-full throttle, every time i slowed down it would pitch down, during level flight the plane never wanted to fly straight; in short it was a handful. Now to keep the plane airborne i only need to apply 1/2 throttle, even for climb outs, and the plane is rock solid and keeps its heading at all speeds; most importantly landing was easy! As the plane slowed down it kept its heading, did not weaver or bank at all, until it came to a gentile stop on the grass. I was surprised at how slow it could fly while maintaining control, it was almost at walking speed. I noticed that the gears have a cover plate attached to them that looks like it would create a lot of drag and instability, but I disregarded it thinking it wouldn't make a huge difference. I couldn't be more wrong; its like a totally different plane. Many thanks to Allfat for suggesting the hand launch and to everyone else for your continued support.

RE: weight VS stability
it was equipped identically when i first got it. those 2.4 ounces are most likely all the epoxy from repairs and the 2 massive chunks of foam that i glued onto the wing after it broke, I had to repair it with something, so i just cut away parts of the box it came in and glued them into the plane where parts were missing, it was made out of the same material i did not see a problem with it. I will attempt to fly it again some time after monday. The weather is not favorable right now and im going camping for the weekend. (and i can tiring the plane)

RE: weight VS stability
i have the art tech corsair http://www.nitroplanes.com/20ar2f4uco3d.html Im a metric person so im not sure if the weight of the plane is right in ounces, the scale said it was 1lb and 6.4oz (without the weight, i removed it) all the jogging paths in my park are close to trees and lamp posts, they're not plane friendly

RE: weight VS stability
none of the wheels have sticky points, the control throws were left at factory default i did not tamper with them, and i never input full throws anyways, i try to do gentle liftoffs and elegant turns, im not really into aggressive flying. Now that i look at the plane more closely, i notice that the control throws are currently in their lowest position, and ailerons are not adjustable at all. The only way i can adjust throws is by changing the position of the push rod on the control surface, and i cant make the throws less than what they already are. Unfortunately i don't have a local baseball diamond, and all of the nearby parking lots and paved areas are riddled with lamp posts and other tall fixtures that i am reluctant to fly around. I will give the corsair another try, after i actually get it balanced.

RE: weight VS stability
yes i just looked at it on horizon hobby. Looks very nice, also looks like i could put the corsair electronics into it. Its also quite pricey. I will consider it if i cant find anything cheaper, or perhaps just an airframe. Are GWS airframes any good? Alfa models? I was thinking of an Alfa LA7 it brings back a sense of patriotism (Im Russian) Thanks for all your help yet again.

RE: weight VS stability
Allfat, please do not think i blame you or anyone for the crash, it is purely my fault and maybe the manufacturers a little. My feelings towards the members of this discussion are absolutely positive. I test the CG bu placing the plane on a stick and marking where it balances, then measuring how far back my mark is from the leading edge of the wing. I also feel compelled to add that i have the hobbyzone supercub, Ive had it for 2 years and i can fly it perfect and i can land it perfect. It is a very fun and exiting plane. I got the corsair (made by Art-Tech available on www.nitroplanes.com) to challenge my flying skills and move on to a more capable plane, however i might have bit off a bit more than i can chew. I do feel like i should set it aside for the time being and get a slightly less capable airplane as opjose suggested. Can someone please direct me to a more stable airframe, or at least name some characteristics to look for in a new airframe. I am not on a tight budget however i do not wish to spend a lot of money, I will attempt to remove the electronics from the corsair and migrate them to whatever my next plane will be.

RE: weight VS stability
Allfat, balancing the plane "properly" made it worse. I just came back from a test flight with the manufacture's recommended COG.... the plane was so tail heavy it stalled on takeoff and fell onto the right wing. So now im missing a wing, going to repair it later today. The weight is definitely coming out, im putting the COG back to where it was initially. Going to try spoilers next. I must say this whole experience with this plane has been very discouraging, im having doubts about pursuing rc aviation. psb667 you can find the pics of my plane here: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_8844765/mpage_2/tm.htm note it no longer has a 3 bladed prop, its flying a 2 bladed with the same pitch and length

RE: weight VS stability
Ok i have done exactly as you said Allfat. The weight is now as far back as the geometry of the plane would allow (on the inside) and the plane balances perfectly. On the bottom of the wing there are 2 lines in between which the manufacturer suggests the COG should be. Mine is now right in the middle of them. I am eager to test fly however i will not be able to for a while, I do not want to test fly it at my park because if it breaks on landing again i can not determine if it was the plane or the grass. I will try to go to a nearby empty parking lot, but i cant tell you when that will happen its too far to walk and my parents are not home to give me a drive. I am also going camping for the weekend, i will try my best to test fly as soon as possible. If there is anything else left to add before i fly it please do so. Thanks for all the input and help

RE: weight VS stability
OK just for grins my approach is as follows: Fly the plane level parallel to my landing strip at approximately 6-8 meters high and reduce throttle to half. Turn the plane around 20-30M away from the landing strip aligning it with the runway and heading into the wind, reduce throttle to idle. Glide down to the landing strip making small throttle adjustments to prevent stalling. Pull up briefly before touchdown to reduce speed even further and to get a postie attitude (so the plane does not noseplant) Touchdown, and the plane flips over. The plane has a battery hatch, which happens to be the only place the battery will fit, the weight that the plane comes with is insufficient to balance it out, or perhaps i dont know where to put it. I could rip off the glued cockpit and create some kind of closing hatch to put the battery farther back in there, but i would like to exhaust all alternatives before i start ripping things off my plane. I will disassemble the rudder and elevator assembly today to see if i could fit that lead weight somewhere far aft, i am reluctant though, putting that part of the plane back together is a royal pain

RE: weight VS stability
well i just came back from the test flight. The plane flew better and on approach was a lot more stable. I did a wide approach, came in shallow and faster than usual, throughout the descend the plane was rock solid, with a uniform descent rate, looked like it was going to be a picture perfect landing. The moment the gear touched the ground the plane took a front flip and broke the motor off the motor mount. I will try to reduce the spoilers little by little after repairs as aerowoof suggests. I am starting to believe that the terrain i land on is the biggest problem and not the plane. My usual landing spot is a grass field (its a bit patchy and tall) and every time i "land" on it something breaks. there is a small dirt field beside it that is a lot better for landing, but there is no room to fly there.

the way the plane lands would have to disagree, i only landed it good once, it was my very first flight out of the box with the spoilers.

RE: weight VS stability
OK i think i will add a little bit of weight and balance the plane better and see how it will fly and land. Most importantly, i will return the ailerons to the stock setting. When the plane arrived the ailerons were both pitched up like spoilers... naturally i did not think that leveling them out would make a huge difference (its my first 4 channel plane and it is a war bird corsair with the double dihedral) I think me removing the spoilers was the initial cause of this problem (Thanks to Charlie P. for pointing it out to me). Thanks for all of the input, the information presented is very valuable to me. I will come back here in a couple of hours and tell you if the spoilers fixed the problem.

weight VS stability
I have a 4 channel foamie that ive been flying for 3 months now, but i dont think im enjoying it as much as could be. Flying it is not hard but landing is a nightmare. I can never bleed off enough speed, the plane always comes in too fast. Every time i try to slow down the plane becomes very unstable and hard to control (especially the roll) and i know im not stalling it because I can fly it even slower at altitude. Every time i try to put it down at its comfortable speed it does not want to land, it just keeps on floating until im forced to either plow it into the ground or go around and try again. The plane came with a metal weight that was to be used for balancing but when i check my plane without the weight it is balanced just fine, so i left it out thinking a lighter plane would be more nimble. So my question is: If i was to add weight to the aircraft, will it improve or disprove the stability of the aircraft on approach and during level flight; will the plane slow down faster when the throttle is reduced, and will it stop floating when the throttle is cut low to the ground? Thanks in advance for all your help

RE: How do you fix a solid styrofoam wing?
glad i could help in such a destructive manner You said your wing broke near the servo wire tube, I think a quick fix for that is make another groove about 4 inches long just below the servo wire tube. (Make sure it runs through the break near the servo) then put a 4 inch long carbon rod, to strengthen just that one break. This way you dont need to rebuild the rest of the wing, just a quick patch for a small crack. Well thats the way i understand the problem, im not entirely sure how big and where this break is. About the leading edge, you could glue the wood together and sand it, but it will look better and fly better if you replace it.

RE: How do you fix a solid styrofoam wing?
i broke my Styrofoam wing in half just a week ago. Put it together with elmers white glue, had no problems with it. went up to fly it again today and it flew perfectly fine. I have no epoxy, carbon or balsa on or in my wing at all, just foam and glue, to my surprise the wing is very strong. I say just use epoxy, and your wing will be as good as new. If you really think it needs more strength, the carbon rod will do the trick. by the way jimmyjames213, that's my corsair! http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_8844765/tm.htm I hope you fix your plane happy flying!

RE: what sise is my plane?
I tried to check out that link but could not find anything i could use (or perhaps understand). andrewtexas123 asked the dimensions of my plane, well here they are: Wingspan: 1000mm (37.8 inch) Length: 835mm (30.8 inch) Flying Weight: 700g (20 oz) Speed Controller: 25A Brushless ESC Servo: 3X 9g high speed micro servos Battery: 11.1V 1300mah Li-Polymer http://www.nitroplanes.com/20ar2f4uco3d.html Thanks for the Kv information, but how do i know what i want:? Should i go with a higher Kv motor and a smaller prop, or a lower Kv motor and a bigger prop? The plane has plenty of power, i want to upgrade because I want it to go faster, however i dont think the design of the nose will allow for a small prop. (check out the link)

what sise is my plane?
I have recently decided to get a new brushless motor for my recently repaired plane, and i came to the conclusion that i have no idea how brushless motors work. First of all, how do you determine the sise of your aircraft? I dont want to buy a motor that's physically too big or too small for the airframe. Secondly, what does Kv stand for? I assume the more Kv the more power the motor has, thus how do you figure out which prop to put on it? I do know that brushless motors need brushless esc and the amps on the 2 entities have to match. So yeah.... how do i figure out which motor and prop to get ?

RE: obliterated brand new corsair
actually i got this one straightened. Its not laser perfect, but thevibrations are completely gone, and the propeller tracking is off byless than a millimeter. I know a new shaft is a cheap part, but i cantget one right now because my LHS is closed already, so i tried tostraighten this one for fun and it worked. I will fly it tomorrow andsee if it really needs a new shaft, this one appears to be perfectenough. If it does then i will go grab a new one, if not... why spendmy lunch money not on lunch? Now im completely sure that nothing will fall off my plane in flight [:)] Thanks for all your help once again

RE: obliterated brand new corsair
that's a sweet corsair. Tell me when it smashed into the ground, didyour motor bend? I cant seem to figure out the issue with mine, everytime i run it up it vibrates a lot and is a lot louder than it used tobe. The propeller blades dont track in the same plain either. I tookoff the cowl to look at whats causing it and found that the whole outercasing of the motor appeared bent 0_o. Every time i run it up at lowrpm i can see the outer motor casing twisting back and forth veryslightly, like if i record a video you wouldnt be able to see it. Isthis caused by a very slightly bent shaft, or is the whole motor justtrashed? Also will it still fly fine with the vibrations, or is it justa terrible idea to even try?

RE: obliterated brand new corsair
The previous motor mount was plastic, it was a plastic circle on 4 sticks. This motor mount is a chunk of foam epoxied to the firewall, and that little piece of balsa epoxied onto the chunk of foam. Everything there is solid, and i could hold the whole plane up by the motor. On full throttle nothing moves, nothing cracks, nothing bends. (except the whole plane vibrates, that's a slightly bent shaft due to the crash, not in any way related to the mounting) I will check again after the first and second flight to make sure the joint is not weakening. I don't think its the strongest motor mount ever, but it looks a lot stronger than the original one. I also finished the paint job last night. I could not match the color perfectly, but i got it pretty close and i kinda like it when it doesn't match exactly, it shows that the plane has gone through a lot but still flies. RE: obliterated brand new corsair
Well i finished the plane. Its completely flight worthy now, except for the paint job. I carefully cut off the cowl, and made balsa support for it, the cowl is held in by 3 screws, inside i made a new motor mount out of foam and balsa, with approximate offset. I hope it works when i take it up tomorrow or Monday depending on the weather. Im really worried the motor will just rip right off the motor mount, its has a lot of torque, maybe more than 3 screws in balsa can handle.
