RE: Fiberglassing question
Liquid sheeting? What is that? I have fiberglassed a few planes, didn't always do a great job of filling the weave. It still flys ok, and al least the fiberglass and paint don't loosen up and flap in the wind like plastic covering does! Jim S.

prop lock nut
I have a Saito 91 that is missing the lock nuts - do I have to order them as a Saito part or are they available from other sources? They are 7mm. Thanks Jim S.

RE: bigger Something Extra?
The only Uproar kit I see is a 40 size with a 48 inch span - is there a bigger one? I don't have a kit to trace the parts from, just a built plane. Jim S.

bigger Something Extra?
Has anyone ever built a bigger version of the Something Extra? I was thinking of around 72 inch span. I have a plane, and I guess I could measure everthing on it and scale it up - it would be easier if I still had the directions and they had outlines of the ribs and formers. Any thoughts? Jim S.

RE: Scratch building Astro Hog ( help with tail)
I'm still working on my scratch built Astro Hog, and am using a Saito 90 four stroke. When I held the engine against the side view I realized that long motor with a regular motor mount would put the weight pretty far forward. I made some tee shaped mounts out of 3/8 aluminum plate material that allowed me to get the back of the carb almost touching the firewall. This puts the cylinder and prop in about the same place as a sixty two stroke would be. I have the fuse pretty much done and am fitting the wing and horizontal stab / rudder from my old Hog to it. I'm starting to wonder if it would have been easier to just build new ones. Today I realized the fuse sits at a slight angle to the wing when viewed from the front. Just enough to notice if you look close, but enough to bug me. Tomorrow I'll add a 1/16 piece to the wing cutout on one side, and will also have to file around on the holes for the dowels. arrggg. Fabric and paint would look nice - my first one was fiberglassed and painted cream and maroon. Astro Hogs are good looking planes - and paint doesn't come loose like plastic covering! Jim S.

RE: Scratch building Astro Hog ( help with tail)
There are no rubber bands anywhere, maybe the very first Astro Hogs built in 1957 used that - but not our planes. It sounds like you have the horizontal stab figured out. There doesn't seem to be any drawings of the top formers F3 and F4, we'll just have to measure the height off the plan and fake it. These aren't really plans that were intended to build a plane from, just instructions for a kit - but there's enough info there to work with. I got the formers F2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 cut out yesterday from 3/32 ply. F1 will be 1/4 ply I guess. I will have to splice the 3/32 balsa sides, I don't have any pieces long enough and I want to build this out of stuff laying around if I can. I will need a bunch of 1/4 and 3/16 square sticks though. Be sure to include the ply doublers on the inside of the fuse in the wing area. What engine are you thinking of using? I have a Fox 60 and a Saito 90 that I could use - haven't decided. Are you going to put the stock dihedral in the wing? The wing I have has a very small amount, just barely noticable. That plane flew real nice, until... oops. I had built it as a taildragger and didn't put the wheels on the wing, had an aluminum landing gear mounted just ahead of the wing. Jim S.

RE: Scratch building Astro Hog ( help with tail)
I just started scratch building a Hog fuselage today. I had one years ago (still have the back half of the fuse and the wing). If you have the side view on the plans, that is the only picture there is of the verticle stabilizer except for some pictures in the instruction book. F1, 2, and 3 are 1/4 balsa glued together - the bottom of them fits the contour of the fuse without "'keying" into it, it just gets glued on top. It needs a little half hole for the elevator joiner dowel. The rudder is 1/4 balsa tapered thinner to the back. There are also some triangle shaped fairing blocks that go on the front of the horizontal stabilizer towards the front of the fin. They are necessary because the horizontal stab is tapered, it gets thicker in the middle. Do you have the horizontal stab figured out yet? Maybe you haven't gotten that far yet. Jim S.

broken switch
I have a Futaba T6XA s transmitter with a broken air brake switch. Where can I buy a replacement for this? I am bulding a plane with flaps, and evidently that is the switch I would need for them. Come to think of it, this transmitter is around 10 years old, should it be sent in for a 'tune up"? It works fine as far as I know except for the switch that broke when it fell over once. Thanks Jim S.

RE: Club FOX!
I saw a picture of a Fox 120 twin, like two 60's put together, in another thread (forgot just where). When did Fox do this - are there any available out there? It would be fun to mess around with that motor - something different for sure! Jim S.

RE: Top Flite C-47 (DC-3)
Thanks for the pictures, it looks great! It's good to see a real-life messy workbench too! I have one of these kits in a little pile of "someday projects". Let us know how it flies - I suppose by the time you get it all ready the weather might be a problem. Here in Wisconsin it's getting crummy. Jim S.

RE: 58 cd idle problem
Well, I guess I found the problem. The foam around the fuel tank had shook loose and wasn't really padding the tank much. I pulled it apart and got the foam back under and on the sides of the tank and now it runs good again. Evidently the fuel was getting all whipped up from vibration and air bubbles were getting drawn into the carb. Now maybe I won't get kidded about that British

RE: 60 size taildragger ideas
Well, I ordered a Fantasy ARF from Skyshark Models - haven't gotten it yet. If that works out good I'll retire the Something Extra. Those Astro Hogs look darn good to me The wing I have is real nice, and I have a set of plans. I'll build a body for it this winter. Pattern planes are interesting too, I like the way they fly. The old timers in the club still talk about the Kaos.

RE: 60 size taildragger ideas
Thanks everyone - that Great Planes Escapade looks sort of interesting - are they well made? I already have enough projects started, maybe an ARF would be a good idea. Some of the ARF's I see seem to be built extremley light. I realize light is good, but when the landing gear tears out on even a pretty good landing, I think it would have been better to sacrifice some lightness for more strength. Bruce - I just happen to have a Fox Eagle 74 engine laying around - maybe i should try that! Jim S.

60 size taildragger ideas
I have been out of the hobby for about 4 or 5 years and now got back in. I got my old Something Extra going and have flown about a half gallon of fuel without crashing so I guess I still sort of remember how. Now I would like something a little bigger. I like taildraggers and have no interest in 3d type planes. I used to have a Sig four star 60, (maybe I had two - I remember crashing one for sure). I also had an Astro Hog - still have the wing from that. They were both nice, the four star floated a lot on landing from what I remember. I alwas liked kits and was against arf's, but maybe I should re-consider that. I know some arf's are real good now. The Bruce Tharp Venture sounds good to me, but they aren't available. Any suggestions? Jim S.

58 cd idle problem
I have an RCV 58 cd in my Something Extra. It is an old plane -not sure when I built it but the motor serial number is 691. It used to run great but I hadn't flown now for about 4 years. I started flying again and got the plane going. I can't seem to get the motor to idle slow enough to land nice or taxi back. It dies when II try to get it to run that slow. The idle adjust screw

oz cover
A long time ago, (10 years?) I had gotten some iron on covering called Oz Cover, from Australia. Some guy in Michigan was selling it. It was clear - took paint real well and was pretty darn tough. They also had Rhino Cover which was sort of pearly white. Does anybody remember this stuff - is it still available? I have an Ace 4-120 that I had covered with Oz and painted yellow and red - it still looks good. Jim S.

RE: transmitter battery
Thanks, Rich. If I use LiPo's I would have to get a different charger for that. Maybe I should look at nimh. I never heard of Eneloop - they will charge with the old type chargers won't they? 2500 mah would be plenty for me. (We do more talking than flying).

transmitter battery
I have been out of rc flying for 4 or five years and now am getting back in. My transmitter is a Futaba T6XA and has the original battery which doesn't hold a charge now. What is the current "good' battery to use? Mine is a ni-cad 600 mah, but I imagine there are much better things to use now. What should I look for? Thanks Jim S.
