RE: OUTBOARD DRIVE home built
i just tinfoil it cause ,it keeps the heat from the resin from shrinkage, if it were to be a one off hull your right i would do that, but i want to use this model to build a two piece plug, for laying more hulls,i,ve built other hulls the same way be for, and found that the foam shrinks from the heat while curing,so the bottom or top which ever you do first ends up a bit smaller all the way around, this is why i foil it first, can,t afford all the fancy types of resins and stuff others use

RE: OUTBOARD DRIVE home built
i use construction foam, from hardwear store 1" or 2" , and gorilla glue to laminate together, i cut all the angles and shapes first on a table saw, a little larger than they need to be, once all cuts are done,i glue it all together, than start sanding with 40 grit, the 40 is real agrresive ,so you have to becarfull not to take to much,if its a little large here or there, i just use a fine hacksaw blade, as for keeping all uniform on both sides ,thats were the layers of the foam come in to play, the lines or layer edges work great for refferences to measure, the pink or blue foam works best, more dense, be for i fiberglass , i cover it in tinfoil, with spray glue, outher wise the resin would eat the foam, you could use epoxy resin right on the foam,i don,t use this cause im cheap, i will post some pix as i glass it up

RE: OUTBOARD DRIVE home built
ok well all is good , got the tunnel wet this weekend , and all stayed together ,burned up 2 full tanks of fuel with no gear problems,i have the boat really trimmed under and it still wants to blow over with out a little weight in the front, so im going to build a little longer hull 54" should be good, got some good videos,i will try and post this week. o and sleeper i stiil think you will need a longer boat, but you should finnish your shovel, and try it any way, maybe the nose weight will keep it level.

hi dom, didin,t mean anything by my post, just thought it was funny to see your new leg made like that,my cable drive leg was made 2 years ago ,and was just an idea that actually work pretty good, yours looks awsome, i have just moved on too a more scale style, and besides thats how things get improved, people using others peoples ideas, thats what keeps us all moving forward, and know i have never raced f1, im in canada ,rc boating here is few and far, f1 scale even farther, any how i love this site and all the info, maybe one day i can sell my own outboard drive unit, nothing against anyone. sharpy

RE: OUTBOARD DRIVE home built
very cool , sleeper, your going to need a very long boat to canter the weight of a weedy motor,i know with my tunnel hull , i tryed with a 40", and all it did was cat walks, the tunnel im running know is 5 feet ,and it still pulls the front up in the air, thats with the motor trimed way back, almost too far off the neutral position, meaning foward under the transom,so ive added weight to counter the boat, as for selling these units there crazy bob , im still testing, the gears seem to be fine ,its keeping the press fit on the shafts thats giving me proplems, so ive decided to build a whole new drive, that has a larger bearing and gear, i can get the parts much easyer if a tad bit larger, and not compramize the size of the whole unit,as for selling one, i need to make one that will stay together for more that acouple of runs, but iam getting there, i will keep you guys posted, thanx for being interested,SHARPY

RE: OUTBOARD DRIVE home built
hi guys, thanx for all the input, its slowly getting dialed in ,but yes hard to dial in when i can only go a couple of laps and somthing breaks, but on the other hand it is starting to work better, every weekend the runs get longer and faster,as for the skag i think its ok for turning, seems to turn better to the left,i think thats prop torque, ive noticed if u watch the dutch tunnel,he slows right down when he turns & he never cracks it out of the hole, probably afraid to break the gears, ive only seen that one in video, and 1 other 1 accually running, the other 1 is a grey & orange yellow, says winston on it,and of coarse mine, were are all the gear drivin outboards, just wondering, cause i see alot of lower units every one have but ive only seen two others running on the water,id like to see that amps out board & boat going on the water, its probably a patio stone, were are all you gear drivin outboard guys, lets see some new videos, ive only seen 3, one being mine. http://www.youtube.com/user/winstonmicallef

RE: OUTBOARD DRIVE home built
hi all that visit this thread,i love those pix specialk, just wondering were are those lowers from, the one looks like a gmorty, but i like the one with the plate on it,who makes or made that one, very interesting,i had the same idea, for my next castings, heres some pix of my gears from my second lower unit, was dremel gears that broke the teeth off, friend of mine tooled me its horse power, too much, there not designed for that much torque,i think hes right, air die grinder gears are still holding out good, don,t know if anyone noticed but i have turned the motor 90 degres on the top plate ,really helped keep water out of the carb, anyhow check the pix ,keep the info comin, thanx
