RE: Houston, TX Pattern Contest May 5th-6th
Hey Glen, I got back from our field a couple of hours ago. I saw Art out there. He will be leaving early tomorrow morning to head down. Ron Shirley and I will be going down also. I have a good feeling Lance will go since he has been practicing allot lateley. Dave Cotton will not be able to attend since he has a prior committment actaully in Galveston at thaat time. It's been a few years since I last attended the Space City contest I'm looking forward to it. Mr. Shepherd

RE: Cycling Lipos at Home
I just use a Celpro PL8. I charge 2 5S 4900ma packs in Parallel at 1C (balanced charge) it takes 45 mins from storage charge. I then discharge down to storage charge at 1C (10amps divided by 2) NON REGENERATIVE. It takes 1 hour. I find this works great for weekdays when you work during the day and are too tired to fly when you get home. It takes me 3 evenings to get 5 cycles or 5 evenings to get 5 cycles on 2 sets (4) 5S 4900ma packs. It takes the same 35 mins to charge all 4 packs from storage charge at 1C (20amps divided by 4) but 2 hours to discharge back down to storage (10 amps max divided by 4). Like i said works for me.

RE: Sickle (V-2)
I got one 4 minute flight on the Sickle this afternoon. Before the flight I had one of my pattern buddies help me check the balance. It turned out to be way to nose heavy whith the batteries in the location I had them. We moved the batteries as far back as as the mounting plate would allow and still be secured but it was still nose heavy. I determined it was safe to fly it so I got the maiden out of the way. I've got to rework the battery placement to get them further back. Here are some photo's the last one is the location of the batteries when I flew. Glen

RE: Sickle (V-2)
By the way, as Bob mentioned there are hard points in the stab for a small screw to go into the stab tube. You have acces to the hard point from the top or the bottom. You just have to locate it through the covering. OK now I'm off to the field for the maiden. Or... I could just sit hear and stall.... naww I'm outta here! Glen

RE: Plettenberg Advance 30-10 Inrunner Test Data!
Im very close to finishing up my new Sickle with the Pletty Advanced 30-10. The most chalenging thing in the build was mounting the Pletty Advanced 30-10. Since it requires nose ring with rear support installation I felt it was a liitle bit harder than if it were able to be mounted on a rear fire wall. There was not enough room in the fuse to mount the front motor support using the mounting holes provided in the support. I had to redrill alternate mounting holes and move them in. There was not allot of space to do this. My spinner diameter is either 82mm or 85mm I forgot which. If your spinner is larger than this you should not have this issue. I used 1/8 ply for the nose ring but since the fuse face was 0.2 inches thick I had to install the nose ring up against the inside of the fuse face and with that I barely got the thrust washer to clear the outer fuse face and provide clearance for the spinner. In the first photo you can see the original motor mount hole. This area is on a curved surface, the corner of the fuse face and the fuse side. In the end I got mine installed and I'm very happy with it. If I had to do it again I know what to watch for and the installation would go faster. The motor mounts are excellent quality and very light. I placed the order for my motor mounts on a Friday afternoon and they were in my hands the next Monday afternoon. Great sevice F3A Unlimited.

RE: Sickle (V-2)
Well, I'm running about a month ahead of my schedule. I've got a shot at a maiden flight this Sunday. The last big thing I have to do is create and install a battery plate (will also mount the controler). Hopefully I can get this done tonight. I have lots of little things to do on Saturday ( mount regulator, switch, receiver, 2S lipos, cut carbon fiber spinner for prop, install landing gear, install wing tip skids). The most chalenging thing in the build so far was mounting the Pletty Advanced 30-10. Since it requires nose ring with rear support installation I felt it was a liitle bit harder than if it were able to be mounted on a rear fire wall. I'll upload some pics of my motor install later. RE: Baton Rouge Contest May 14-15
So, how 'bout we get this thread back to it's original intent! Hey Matt, Ya'll putt'n on a contest May 14th - 15th down in Dixie? Can you order up some good weather, good cookin for us? How's the runway? Last time I was at Dixie in 2000 it was a grass field. Will this contest be at the same location? Is there camping & hookups onsite? If advanced registration is avaiable can you keep us posted on the numbers of folks signed up? Sure hope there's a great turn out since folks in this part of the south know Louisianna wrote the book on contest hospiatilty! Glad to see Baton Rouge back on the contest callendar. RE: Sickle (V-2)
ORIGINAL: cmoulder The 4-wire, long lead for the stab servos ended up weighing a bit more than the 2 40'' extensions, but the slightly heavier silicone coated stuff will have less resistance and should be better in the long run. Installed a few of those blue foam wire keeper thingies down the inside of the fuse to keep the wires from flopping around.
Hi Bob, Where did you get those blue foam wire keepers from? Glen

Hi Chad, How thick are your front motor mounts? Would 1/8" thick ply be sufficient for both the nose ring and the mounting plate attached to the motor? Glen

RE: Sickle (V-2)
ORIGINAL: cmoulder Glen, I'm actually working significantly slower than usual because of the new (for me!) materials and techniques, etc. The things that are slowing the process are getting the CF parts fabricated and installed, and I'm still looking forward to the battery hold-downs and the rudder servo deck, and the canopy should be a lot of fun. The firewall struck me as perhaps the most difficult part, which is why I did it first. But I think it will be ready to fly by the first day of Spring, which is 1 month from today!! What time frame are you anticipating?
Bob, Same here only in my case my I'm still waiting for the Pletty Advanced 30. One way or another I hope to be finished by mid spring. Glen
