RE: good deal or not??
I dont know about the rest of it, but I would never put expandable foam in any model parts, wings / floats etc etc. You never know when it is going to finish expanding - excess pressure on the structure, it is heavy and if the wings needed it the kit designers would have put it on or wrote it in the instructions! A friend of mine built a 2m Solent that was supposed to be 12lbs AUW, he wondered why when finished it was over 14lbs! we then set about scraping 2lbs of expanded foam from the hull . . . No, no, no . . . Good luck, Scott.

RE: RCV engine opinions needed
We have had a couple of people use them at our club with varying degrees of success . . . one guy had one of his 'jump a timing tooth' [X(], another guy has had nothing but issues with his as well . . . Based on there problems I would not even use one in a single engine plane let alone a multi. It does seem to be true, you do get good and bad etc, but at least with an OS you alway get a good one (well in my 15 years of flying I have anyway, I wont even give the others shelf space) You pay your money and take your chance, you get what you pay for in most cases. A bad engine can ruin a good plane very very quickly, even more so with a multi, I recently purchased a DC3 with a pair of SC40's - the first thing I did was take them out, the plane had 2 flights and even then one went out . . . thats borrowed time . . . I once built a Sunderland with 2x OS10's and 2 XOS15's, flew it a dozen times before converting it to brushless, that was not due to the engines but the wing loading, the engines even at this small size were faultless. Good luck!

RE: Lake Buccaneer 20: Info Anyone
Jerry, can you confirm that it is pusher configuration? ( weight wrong side of CG :-( ) Also it may be a good candidate for brushless . . . The airframe I have has a lot of weight in the nose, maybe if you can go with the conventional prop facing forwards it may help you out with ballance?

RE: Lake Buccaneer 20: Info Anyone
Hi, I was given one of these as the previous owner had no success with it at all. It had an OS35FP installed as pusher (I presume it should be in pusher configuration? Anyway it sat very very low in thw water and would not get off, also the join line between the hull and canopy was very low and subsequently it leaked water. The project was benched and is now stripped currenty stored in the loft. Good luck with yours, I will keep an eye on this thread just incase yours makes it to the skys!

A big bipe on floats, sounds good . . . My first attempt flying on/off water was with a .61 size bipe, very sucessful. I have migrated to flying boats now for better water handling etc .

RE: The Spruce Goose Fly's at Lake Hemet
Jim, Great work . . . where did you locate the batteries? I have read much about problems with brushless motors / esc when used on extensive wiring runs. I was concerned about long wiring runs on my 72" sunderland but did not experience any issues.. (4 ESC's each one behind the motor) On the odd occasion when I get water in my motors they dont function correctly until the dry out; doesnt take long, but they squeak and chatter until this time. Any pictures detailing the battery / ESC mounts etc? Lovely plane, just getting into the larger brushless stuff now - imconverting a topflight DC3 (2 x 4S1P 43150 packs) :-) Scott.

Tom, Some really nice pictures there, what's the silver multi engine 3 rudder fin plane? What size was that? Was it brushless and do we know of the plan for that? Thanks for posting. Scott.

RE: Vintage R/C Plans 9' Catalina PBY-5A
Well boys . . not great . . . Mike; 'I chopped the engine and went for dead ahead landing' absolutely the correct thing to do, no point being a hero eh,? sounds like there was little else you could do . . . and after all that happened you flew it and you are probably one of the few that ever will from this plan. I wonder where this leaves us? Bob, I watched the Bill Price DVD today - many thanks - even if that one is not meant to be, it inspired me in some respects . . . He has extended the nose by 2 inches, this could serve to help elevate the Buoyancy / water handling issue but also the ballast in the nose / balance issue. When I build mine I will seriously consider doing the same . . . Not wanting to sound like a sadist be very interested to see the damage and where is failed on the tail Mike - thanks for all the correspondence . . . Bob: Not had time to watch the whole DVD but I can see what you said about it flying fast . . . (still like one if it wasnt going to be so expensive, did you notice how low it sat in the water? A trait of all model Catalinas, build them light and sparse is the key - Ivan got it dead right with his . . . mmm Ivans Minicat with 2 OS25's? . . . RE: Vintage R/C Plans 9' Catalina PBY-5A
Mike, congrats on actually flying her, a minor set back and only a little dissapointing im sure . . . the main thing is she flew, you can work the rest out for sure . . . 3 3/4" from the leading edge, how far infront of the suggested CG does that put it (from the plan) How can they get it so so wrong? [:o] I am always disappointed when they do . . . The tail heavy thing . . . yeah for sure short nose etc etc no engine weight down the front . . . how often do we read in the construction notes about keeping the tail light etc, then the plan directs us to using silly amounts of wood in obscure places . . . . Did you run out out of down trim then? How long / far and high was the flight? Was it off ground or water? All the best, Scott.

RE: Vintage R/C Plans 9' Catalina PBY-5A
Mike so he balanced it at the CG point we discussed earlier and moved the step 3/4 inch forward? Be sure to let me know how she gets off and what she flys like . . . am wondering what power sources to purchase . . . was considering the OS65LA (bushed motors) be interesting to see what you feel the power is like with your setup and what you feel is the requirement when getting off the water. What is yours powered by? Arrived @ the lake today and 9:30 and had my last flight @ 4:30 put about 12 flights on the Catalina . . . leaned the OS10's out 4 clicks now they are run it . . . they are real little belters now, start easy run faultlessly I love them! [:D] My cat loops and rolls with little effoer but @ 4.5 lbs I need a larger bird to take the gust's we so consistently experience here in the UK [8|]

RE: Vintage R/C Plans 9' Catalina PBY-5A
Dave, Thanks for posting the pictures, the say so much more than words . . . be interested in seeing the wing struts and what you have done with the joiners regards the redesign in the join place . . . The GP cat, nice work - I had a boxed new one but could never get the enthusiasm to build it . . . yours looks well detailed though . . . (not a patch on your 108" one though [;)]) Im saving up for a pair of OS65 LA for my cat, pushing through the Mars build now to start it. [8D] Im off to a water plane meeting tomorrow @ 8am 1.5 hours away, I will be taking these to glow birds, give the Sunderland a rest until next weekend [:D] we have a 2 day event just down the road from me . . .

RE: Vintage R/C Plans 9' Catalina PBY-5A
Mike you must get some video if possible at the very least some picture . . . the reason I ask is that the CG on the plans seem to quite away back I would say further that a 1/3 of the wing cord . . . the does not seem correct but thats what is indicated on the plan?[8|] Where is your CG in relation to the plan? All the best, and good luck with that flight - if you dont report back within 2 weeks I'll have to start hounding you . . . [:)] Scott.

RE: Vintage R/C Plans 9' Catalina PBY-5A
Mike, that truly is a cool bird, I take it you have not flown it yet? Whats the AUW? Dave glad that your bird is all stick it means hopefully I can use you for some reference . . . [;)] I like the idea of what you have done making the center section removable (sounds like my smaller cat setup) is there any chance when you have some time that you can take some pictures of the relevant section (center and wing panels) so i can see away to duplicate your work? Storage is a problem with the growing collection, transport also; even a 523i Tourer has limitations . . . Best regards, Scott.

Dave, Just the man . . . Glad your still watching this thread, have you flown yours yet? I would be extremely interested in some closeups on your Cat . . . Pylon / Wing aatchment etc etc . . . is yours built up or the Glass moulded type? What power do you have and UAW? I plan on starting this when the Mars is finished . . . Best regards, Scott

RE: Vintage R/C Plans 9' Catalina PBY-5A
Ive spent an hour or so studying my 108" PBY plans, it all looks pretty straight forward by all accounts. A question to those of you that have built this bird; is the center section of the wing designed to stay attached (glued) to the pylon? Is the pylon assembly designed to be detatched? Does anybody have any good photos of there center wing and pylon set up etc? Is there an available construction guide at all? Thanks in advance . . .
