RE: Fiberglass Layup for a Large Model
Caygeon - I use 3.2oz crowfoot for my first layer most of the time. It conforms to curves and tight space very well. My layup is detailed at the web address: http://www.sidgates.us/HOBBIES/F-94C/Fuse%20Plug/Fuse%20Parts.htm I persoanlly would stay away from Kevlar and would only use carbon cloth in the inside in very high stress areas. I use West Systems epoxy but others are probably just as good. Added other molding links: http://www.sidgates.us/HOBBIES/F-94C/F94C%20PROJECT.htm

RE: Fiberglass Layup for a Large Model
You are going to need some fairly large bulkheads and I forgot to call attention to my foam bulkheads. I use blue foam approx. 1/4" thick and lay up 3 layers of 3.2oz cloth on the bulkhead. They are much lighter that plywood and very stiff. The outer dia. of the bulkhead is exposed blue foam and I glue them in with Gorilla Glue. If you want the bulkhead to fuse joint even stronger I add a string of carbon tow to the bulhhead/fuselage joint wet out in epoxy and tamped into the joint.

RE: weatronic door sequencing
Your problem sounds like one I had recently. I needed to slow down the channel in the transmitter to about 4-5 seconds. This gave my valve servos time to operate properly.

If you slowly move the stick from one extreme to the other and the servo tracks normally I think that is OK. It the servo jitters at any point I suspect the pot is dirty or worn.

RE: Fly Eagle Jet F-14 Crash (video)
I am not personally involved with FEJ as a customer or as a rep but this discussion has made me rethink my own scratch build design. Have I thoroughly thought out all the design decisions from a safety standpoint?? All along I have planned to test fly my project at a remote site away from spectators with a very limited audience of help. After reading this thread about problems with a “factory built design I now have planed a more extensive test flight program at the remote site before I ever fly at a local model field or event.

RE: 2.4. range greater than 72
I think the AMA rule for FPV is you have to have a spotter who can visually take over and fly the model in case of a problem. I don't know what they would say about the spotter following the model in a car and keeping the model in sight while the FPV pilot flies out 5 miles.

RE: 2.4. range greater than 72
In the '70s & '80s the FCC limited power to 3/4watt to the final RF stage and probably still do. My tests years ago showed that once you were over 39 inches above ground range on 72MHZ was pretty much limited by how far you coud see the model. Once I tested a Royal radio on 27MHZ with the receiver layer in the dirt, it was solid at one mile, stopped the test at that point. Appox a year ago I wanted to range check a XPS on 2.4GIG so I did the same test on a Futaba 9Z and a Hitec 2.4GIG. With the receiver approx 36" in the air I got solid control on all 3 sets at .91 miles. That was as far as I could go line of sight. Most of the 72MHZ sets in the 80's had less than .50 watts to the final RF including Kraft. I heard of one local flyer who flew out 5 miles on 2.4GIG, but I don't know what brand the radio was for sure. He had an observer on the ground follow the model to stay legal.

RE: I'd Like to propose an addendum to the safety code
ORIGINAL: warbird_1 As i rifle through the jet forums and see multiple problems with airframes and their failures i have to wonder how no one has been seriously injured or worst yet .. killed. I'm talking mostly about the spectators . I was at Joe Nall a few years ago when a well know pilot fireballed his turbine into the runway . Though in my opinion ,it wasn't his fault . but what bothered me was the fact that it happened in clear site of the AMA council while they were conducting a meeting while that plane was clearly breaking the 200 MPH mark set by AMA. that bothered me.. I like every other pipe jockey love to go fast but you have to ask , how fast is fast enough ? What i'm getting at is the fact that i see over and over , guys putting way to much power in some of these air frames. I would like to see a set of regulations that make a jet builder/flyer adhere to the manufacture recommended power plant for their air frame. I believe that being proactive rather than reactive is the best approach. As everyone knows, we are under a microscope as it is and one bad event could really hurt the whole modeling community . i would like to start and open and non-combative discussion on this topic . i'm in no means in favor of more rules and regulations and we have had a really good safety record and i'd like to see it stay that way . I'm not putting all jet flyers in the same mold, but the few percentage that put safety second are the ones i'm concerned about . The second concern is the quality of some of the ARF's being sold to us. The manufactures have little or no vested interest in our future as modelers. That is evident by the lack of quality which translates into lack of safety concerns. they are protected against legal action , we are not . i welcome ideas good and bad but let's keep in civil
- I believe the most effective tool available is forums like RCU where good or bad information is disseminated world wide almost instantly. Our current AMA rules cover most of the unsafe flying that I have witnessed personally in the past few years. High speed passes down the runway endangering other flyers and the pilot is the main safety hazard I have witnessed in recent years. Most club rules cover this problem but enforcement is lax. Also I don’t think we do enough to educate the casual spectator about the risk involved in attending a flying event, not just model jets but also large warbird events. Our hobby can not afford the dollar costs of national rules that cover model plane construction and enforcement of this type of regulation. “Problem exposure on RCU and other forums is the most cost effective regulation for our hobby.

RE: Is it hard to go mode 1 from mode 2?
I decided in the mid 1970's that mode 1 is better for competition aerobatics so I switched to mode1 but had to fly a lot of Mode 2 for commercial reasons at the same time. I found it difficult to switch back and forth so I gave up the mode 1 for competion.

RE: How old is too old for servo horns?
Temerature cycling and humidity have a large effect on nylon (plasitic). I live in Denver, CO where the humidity can be as low as 10% at times. It isn't uncommon to see a plastic prop blade break after a couple of years. I assume plastic control arms will do the same. As someone else pointed out plastic gets stiff and brittle when it dries out. To revive plastic props I boil (low boil) them in waster for approx 2 hrs and I think you could do the same with plastic control horns.

RE: Radio Interference at our field
I spent about 30 minutes monitoring the 2.4GIG band at Chatfield on Tues. My brief test did not show anything but R/C transmitters on the air at that time. The noise level was at about -103dbm and 2.4GIG transmitters that were in use about 300ft away showed -70dbm. A trasnmitter 10ft away showed -38 to -40dbm. One of the flyers who suffered a lot of crashes in 2011 was at the field and commented that all his crashes were in the N.E. quandrant of the field. The suspected source, the Martin Plant, is 3.1 miles south west from the model runway at Chatfield. I didn't see anything that would make me concerned about flying on 2.4GIG at Chatfield.

RE: Jets and burn bans
In the Denver area we have two fields that are in state parks. At Cherry Creek State Park the park mangement can order a burn ban which includes Gas Engines and Turbines. Cherry Creek has had one fire caused by the crash of a turbine helicopter and a couple others caused by lipos in a crash. Personnaly I curtail my turbine flying when I feel the fire danger is too high even though the park may not have officially set a burn ban. My decision is also affected by the amount of fuel (dead grass) that is present at any given time.

RE: When a receiver battery goes low...
RS, I have a lot of servos that limit my voltage to 5.3 volts so on my 2.4GIG radios I run the receiver on a separate battery pack. This way the servos do not pull the receiver voltage below the reboot voltage.

RE: Military colors only at warbird meets?
I think it is up to the people who put on the event to decide what is qualified and what is not. Most event directors can't be too picky or they severely limit the entries. I have a turbine powered F-15 with NASA colors, most local CD's would not restrict me from enter it.

I stand corrected. This servo is speced at 7.4volts. Then as suggested before I would look for excess drag causing high current drain.

RE: Flaps
I suspect your voltage is too high for the servos used. I manfactured model servos for 16 yrs (1969-1985) and if any one ran more voltage than specified all warrantees were voided. I recently contacted Hitec about running their servos on 7.2V (2 A123 in series) and got vauge answer. They stated you could run their standard servos on 7.2 but I didn't find out which ones are standard. Personnally I won't run any servo above the specified voltage.

RE: Fuselage Nose Repair Ideas
Steve - Adam Thanks for the replies. Epoxy only for me. I haven't had time to get started on the repair so still studying the best way. The existing nose has lots of cracks and some missing pieces so I am leaning toward a complete new nose. There is an existing bulkhead in the fuse about 1" back from the ragged fuse end. My current thought on plan to repair. I will tack glue the existing nose piece on the fuse nose and then make a verticle and horizontal template of the nose shape. Next shape a new nose plug out of blue foam. I will cut off the fuse nose about 1/2" in front of the bulkhead. Then lay up the new nose on the blue foam and after cured, remove the blue foam from the inside. Next glue a splice inside the fuselage nose approx 1/2" and 1/2" protruding to pick up the new nose. I plan to start tomorrow.

Fuselage Nose Repair Ideas
I need to repair the nose of this fiber glass fuselage. Most of the top and one side are still intact. The other pictures shows a lot missing on the bottom and the other side. If I just glue the exiting nose to the fuslage there is very little room to work on the inside of the nose. I am thinkin of trying to make a fiber glass sleeve that fits the inside of the nose piece and the front of the fuselage. Any other ideas welcomed.
