RE: Norvel Engine FAQ
ORIGINAL: Mr Cox It can more easily get overheated and the compression setting might also be too high. You can add a few more head shims and run the engine a little rich, and it might be fine. A 7x4 spinning at 12000rpm is only about half of the power that these engines can produce. If you want to fly slow then a 7x3 prop might be better, and it fits the engine better too.
I put the 7x3 on yesterday and did a few flights. It's running really well, and I'm super happy with the performance. It loosened up a bit too...I didn't tach it, but it definitely gained some RPM during my flying session yesterday. Also idles down just fine for full stall landings now. For this model, I think the 7x3 is the ticket. Thanks for the help!

RE: Another Kadetito Build
Thanks everyone. The maiden went extremely well. Such a sweet flying little plane! This Norvel is awesome as well. I want another 1/2 project now! My dad has been informed that all is good with it, and he is excited to see it. I'll be making the drive up to Oregon soon to drop it off. I gotta say, after flying it and having to wipe the ear to ear grin off my face...I may have to build one for me:).

RE: Norvel Engine FAQ
Thanks. I will pick up some of those props and see if I can get it above 16.5k. Am I in danger of ruining the engine at the current rpm? Or is it just a matter of not getting the best power?
ORIGINAL: Mr Cox
First question: Am I wrong not trying to eek every last RPM out of it? Right now it spins around 12k to 12.5k with a std plug, one shim, 20% fuel (with 50/50 synth castor at 20%), at 4500' above sea level.
To me they should at least spin above 16500rpm to be happy. The APC 6.3x4 is a nice match and will give you +17000rpm.

ORIGINAL: Andrew
ORIGINAL: sirzepp Second question: Idle is around 5k rpm. I see no adjustment persay on the carb (there's a small eccentric screw that seems to rub against the throttle arm and act as some sort of stop, I can raise a lower idle speed a bit with this, but not enough to see a lower idle). I wasn't expecting a 'put-put' idle, and 5k is enough

RE: Norvel Engine FAQ
I have a new .074 from nvengines.com. Runs great. I've installed it in a Kadetito and so far it flies perfectly. I haven't really tried to spin it up too far as I didn't really need the power and I wanted to use a standard plug, but it's got ALOT of power for the airframe. I currently do most of the flight at 1/2 throttle. First question: Am I wrong not trying to eek every last RPM out of it? Right now it spins around 12k to 12.5k with a std plug, one shim, 20% fuel (with 50/50 synth castor at 20%), at 4500' above sea level. I am going to prop it down a bit...all I had was a 7x4 after I busted my two 7x3 APCs being dumb. Going back to the 7x3 as soon as I get one. It doesn't go lean, actually increases and sustains RPM when held nose up for extended period of time. I'm happy with the performance at the top end, but I don't want to screw the motor up. It's still REALLY tight at TDC...as in...I can't hand flip it and have been (carefully) using an electric starter. Second question: Idle is around 5k rpm. I see no adjustment persay on the carb (there's a small eccentric screw that seems to rub against the throttle arm and act as some sort of stop, I can raise a lower idle speed a bit with this, but not enough to see a lower idle). I wasn't expecting a 'put-put' idle, and 5k is enough to slow down for landing on grass, but it rolls away on pavement and even on grass I have to fly it on as opposed to a nice full-stall landing. I have read about some guys adding an airbleed to adjust idle, and also someone who added a second needle, but I'd rather keep it simple and I think there might be something I'm missing here. This is my first norvel, and I have never had a 1/2A engine with a throttle (used to fly Tee Dee .049s 20 years ago).
ORIGINAL: Andrew The transparent matched with the striped solids looks good. It's going to be a really sharp plane.
Thanks so much! Covering is definitely a love-hate relationship...I enjoy the artistic outlet...but so often the skills fail me. Encouraging to hear it looks good to someone other than my wife and I (she's biased, of course). Just hope my dad likes it. I was going to do it in lime green to match the big brother, but I really like transparent for it's weight savings (minimal, but still there) and the ability to see the structure.

RE: Another Kadetito Build
Ground attitude is more level than in the photos...did some creative bending. FWIW my Kadet senior has the infamous saggy mains and sits pretty nose high...no trouble AT ALL landing that bird...and it's a kite (20 years old and never been crashed!). In fact, landings with a victory roll (holding the nose off as long as possible) are pretty dang fun...even now with all the other planes in the hangar. Love that bird. My old Kadet is the reason for this build, as my dad misses that plane a lot, but doesn't have the time, field access, or location (I'm 700 miles away) to put any stick time on it. So now I'm giving him a solution...a smaller version he can fly almost anywhere! Here's a pic of the old Kadet (we call it the Big Green Ugly...even though we think its beautiful...some guys at the field where I flew growing up nicknamed it that...and it stuck) That's my boy in the pits. Three generations of RC enthusiast have now flown the same plane (though he still needs my help...he IS only 3). We shall see how it works before making changes as I need to get this off the board and done...other projects are waiting (gonna do a Big Stik 60 scratch from plans next...or a WWRC 50cc Profile...depending on when the WWRC profile is back in stock). Here's a pic of the covering process: (sorry for the ninja edits...fixed the gear and decided to edit the post)

She's up on her own legs now. Servos are installed, pushrods routed, engine mount ready...getting really close now... My dad doesn't have access to a formal field, so he'll be finding a place out in the boonies...and I want him to have all the options he possibly can.

Got the fuselage sanded, installed the cowl, engine mount (and mocked up engine, obviously...which is where I started making airplane noises!). Hinged control surfaces and started mocking up servo placement. It's getting there, but the electronics installation and control rod routing is always where I bog down...I don't find it enjoyable at all. I'm looking forward to covering, but until I get the radio squared away I have to wait...UG. I used a 1/4 inch ply firewall...for some reason my brain was convinced it was the right size (1/8")...I've had a lot on my mind lately and even though it looked too big...I installed it without reassessing. So now I can but a 30cc gasser on the front of my kadetito. Dear Lord, I think I'm going insane. Anyway, it shouldn't matter TOO much, I'll just move the battery back. The bummer is, I'm using an ultra light LiFe battery, and I just counteracted that weight savings...lol. But I am too lazy to fix it. RE: CG Ultimate 10-300 Build
I've continued to make tweaks. 1. My paint is coming off the cowl...bothersome...but it was a risk using hardware store paint so chalk it up to being cheap. I have some lustrekote now and will do the FG specialties cowl in that. 2. Had to move the aileron link rods to the center of each aileron. I attached a servo horn (shaved to fit) to each aileron with the holes aligned with the centerline. This allowed max throw on all ailerons with no upper vs. lower differential. Basically it corrected the geometry. Had to reinforce the aileron trailing edge a bit, but it solved the problem and my ailerons are deflecting to the maximum now. 3. Removed all nose weight, it was significantly nose heavy upon flying, and I've continued to remove weight. I took the last 2.8 ounces off the nose a couple of nights ago. I'm hoping for neutral perfection, or maybe just a bit of down elevator for inverted flight...we will see. Love this plane...and the engine (FA-125) IMHO is a perfect match...it has decent punch out of a hover (not a lot, but enough), and it sounds AWESOME.
