Home Made Balsa Profile and Reintroduction
Hi everyone. I'll quickly reintroduce myself. My name is Nick, I'm 30 years old, and I have an addiction. R/C aircraft! My first airplane was a 3-channel twin called a Typhoon. A Toys R Us style years ago. Then I got a Royal Air Mark II trainer with a K&B .45 and a JR AM radio. That was also years ago. I got out of it for many years. I then bought a Raptor 30, sold it because it was too much. Then I bought a CX2 and managed to have some fun with that. Then I bought a CP Pro. What a handful for a beginner heli pilot. I sold it. But 3 years ago, I think it was, I bought a PZ Vapor. That sparked my interest in airplanes again, specifically indoor micros. I then bought an mCX. Between that and the Vapor I was having fun but wanted something for outside. Currently I have a Vapor, UM Trojan, Blade mCX, CX2, SR, and mCPX. So, I started researching micros and found the UM Trojan. What a blast. I'm on my third airframe, third motor, etc. but I still fly it. But I wanted more. A profile 3D plane. I fell in love with the Morris Hobbies planes years ago. I've researched some profiles but have yet to buy one. I then realized I have a TON of balsa. Hundreds of sheets and sticks from when a hardware store my brother worked at decided not to carry it anymore. They gave it to him. Now, it sits in my garage. So, I decided to make my own 3D plane. I decided to use the motor and guts from my UM Trojan. Here are some specs. Balsa and packing tape construction. It is tabbed construction. It is seven pieces. Well, it was more due to a few mistakes and modifications. But the main wing and fuse and non-moving horizontal stab was actually four pieces tabbed and glued. Vertical fuse is two pieces. I visually modeled it off the E-Flite Extra 300 UMX. I drew up everything by hand on grid paper, then transfered lines to the wood The stuff I didn't have was more pushrod wire, UM Sukhoi landing gear, two Spektrum long throw linear servos for the ailerons, and mini control horns It weighs 45 grams (1.59 oz). I tried my best to keep it lighter! Wingspan is 13" Length is 15.125" (15 and 1/8") Wing "chord" at fuse is 4.25" (4 and 1/4") CG is 1.875" behind leading edge at fuse (1 and 7/8") I was going to maiden it today but it's 17 degrees and breezy and also 5 inches of snow on ground. And I was wearing tennis shoes. I wasn't about to run through the snow to get it if it tanked! I just think it's too heavy. It weighs more than my Trojan does. Will it fly? Likely. Will it hover? I doubt it. I'm thinking of doing a 1s or 2s brushless conversion using the AR brick. And now for the pics! http://community.webshots.com/album/581940070ZOLEIM?vhost=community Thanks! I welcomes tips, feedback and even criticism. Nick

Scale/Profile/Pattern
Can anyone explain the main differences between the three types? Not how they look but how they fly and why a certain type is preferred over the other. I see most profiles are modeled after scale aircraft and most full-scale aerobatics are done with Extras/Edges/SU-29s/Yaks, etc. What sets those designs apart from a pattern aircraft and why are there no full-scale pattern aircraft? Thanks, just trying to figure all this stuff out :)

Confused about first 3D to buy
Hi all. It's been a while! I'm getting back into RC. I've been flying a UM Trojan for six months and while it's fun I'd like to move up to a 3D. The Trojan just doesn't do inverted like I want. I'm sure it's been discussed plenty but I thought I'd ask again. What should I get? For outdoor and large indoor spaces I'm looking at the 3DHS, DW Foamies, Techone Hobbies planes. For indoor/outdoor I looked at the DW 20" that uses Parkzone guts with a brushless kit. I'd like to buy one that I can purchase a motor/ESC with since I'm kind of lost on all this new tech. I don't mind a kit, as I like to build. Most state what motor/ESC/batt/servos to use but am unsure on what receiver to use. A DX6i will be used. I'll keep researching. It's just overwhelming! So many brands and I don't know what is good and what is junk. Needs: Indoor/outdoor, focusing on outdoor. 30-36" span? Preferably all foam Something that handles a 2.4 receiver mated to a DX6i Something I can learn 3D on but not be bored with it later Thanks! It's good to be back!

RE: Who's Flying the PZ Vapor?
So I've been flying it alot at work before public hours of the theater (iWerks Theater-same size as Imax). It's a lot of fun, but I got tired of slow flight, throttle-off landings, and loops. So I started flying upside-down. It's tough with full throttle with such a dihedral, asymetric wing, but if flying up into a loop, full up elevator and half throttle will let it fly upside-down. Pretty cool :)

Show us your flying areas!
Show pics of where you fly, or videos if you have them. I work at a museum and fly my PZ Vapor there whenever possible. Not trying to Spam my place of employment, but my pictures suck compared to the ones our website has. http://thewildlifeexperience.org/VisitorInfo/VirtualTour/tabid/62/Default.aspx# Click "Here" under the red bold print. It will bring up a Virtual Tour page. Lower left is Extreme Screen Theater (one view), upper left is Great Hall (two views), upper middle is Main Admissions (one view-X between "Main Admissions" and "Main Entrance"). Click on the Xs to load the 360* viewer. The theater is the best when the air handlers are shut off on Mondays, like today. No airflow, no sound (sound deadened walls), and lots of vertical space! I like flying to the top, killing the motor and doing power off landings to the floor. Lots of fun. The Great Hall is good for lots of touch and goes. Haven't flown my Blade mCX in there yet.... :) Show where you fly! Living rooms, garages, libraries, gyms, event halls, etc. Nick

RE: NEW! E-Flite Blade Micro CX
ORIGINAL: ExplorerEast 1) is there a screw that holds the flybar to the inner shaft (there are two sets of wholes in the notch where the flybar sits, is one for a screw?). 2) how do I release the original inner shaft? Do I need to undo the collar down by the gear? 3) are the upper blades connected to the inner shaft? how do I disconnect them to place them on the replacement shaft?
1) The flybar sits in a notch. The notch has a screw in it to prevent the flybar from coming out. There should only be one screw, is yours missing? 2) Yes, loosen the two screws in the collar. One screw sits against a flat spot on the shaft. Realign this on the new shaft so it does not spin. The entire shaft will slide out of the inner shaft with the upper rotor head and flybar attached. 3) Yes, uppers are inner, lowers are outer. Undo the two screws on the blades. They sandwich the rotor head but must be slid on their pivoting pitch hinges. Undo screws, pull blades apart softly, then pull away from the shaft. Same with the flybar, save that. The inner shaft comes with a new flybar mount. Mount existing flybar, blades, main gear, lock collar on new shaft. Hope that helps!

RE: Who's Flying the PZ Vapor?
Thanks. I should have figured acetone or alchohol would, just didn't think about it at the time! Yes, it is worth $100 for sure. In fact I found it to be worth $200, since I bought two. Don't tell my girlfriend, I owe her money! The first one broke the horizontal stab pivot link first thing, so I called for parts. No one carried any so I decided another plane would be cheaper than rebuilding in the long run. I also ordered a new horizontal and vertical stab online so I will have two complete planes by mid next week. Oh and since I have an mCX, six batteries and three chargers!

RE: Who's Flying the PZ Vapor?
So I bought one this morning, using a Christmas gift card for some of it. Love it so far. Did some loops and wingovers on the second flight. Have about six flights on her now. One problem. I broke the carbon fiber rod hinge for the horizontal stab. I removed it and used a .5 mm mechanical pencil lead and fits perfectly, only it's very weak! I see there is a replacement stab online, but not sure if my LHS has them. I see the new part comes with the plastic piece that slides onto the carbon fiber fuse "stick". How do I removed it? It seems glued in or on pretty tight.

RE: Full scale flyers....roll call.
Hi all. I went to Metro State College in Denver and started working on my aviation degree. Did 1.5 semesters, Private, Commercial/Instrument ground. Started my private rating but ran out of money and got lazy (don't do that!). I have 10 hours fixed wing in 152/172, 33 hours in an IFR sim, an hour in a Duke. My interests were sparked recently and have started my rotory rating in Schweizer 300s. I may take the MD500E up just to say I have turbine time :) A friend is going to take me up in her '76 7KCAB when it's done with the annual. Yes, after taking a break I told myself to get off my ass and get back to flying, whatever it takes!

Sure is addicting! Did you get your C120? If so, how is she flying? I would love my own aircraft but if I got one it would probably be an ultralight or homebuilt. I did some hovering and the instructor did an auto, very fun! I didn't do any straight and level that day, it was 15 gusting to 22. Hovering in wind was my task :) Are you active or reserve now? What do you do? That sounds like a good program to get into!

RE: Snow scooter....Home made!
No, unfortunately I don't have pics. I used the Great Planes skis and also used wheels on them both. The snow was more fun because on asphalt it was too fast and too unstable. I didn't use it on the water but I could have converted to floats. Hmmm... I'll let you know if I make another one!

RE: Any tips for flying my new heli?
Don't crash! Well, for flying tips I guess a good one is to make small movements of the sticks. Over-correcting can cause lots of crashes. Hover off the ground a few inches at first, then work up from there. Have fun and buy lots of extra parts!

RE: Turbine Toucan
I have seen a few vids online. Very cool plane! What about aerobatics with a turbine? They aren't as responsive as a piston but maybe the turboprop is different than a turbojet due to the propellor? Then again, maybe it wasn't built for aerobatics, but for speed and fun? The Pitts is a great platform either way!

That's cool! I made one about 10 years ago with my K&B .45 out of wood and had a large basswood air rudder. It also had three skis but was more triangular and wider. I made another a few years ago using my 0.S. .46 out of channel aluminum but it didn't turn out so well. I should make another!

That is awesome! I'm still drooling over the pictures from his build. I'm still trying to get the mental picture of how yaw is controlled with his rudder servo. I read the part about it but it's still confusing me. Anyway, back on topic. Those Kamovs are very cool. I wouldn't mind flying the Ka-115. I haven't heard much of it's progress lately.

Yeah I know what a JetCat is, I was curious what size and if there is more than one. JetCat only sells one turboshaft unless you can swap a larger engine into their mechanics.

I picked up two and my LHS also. I can't really see a difference though according to the mAh, it should be 20 mAh longer, or 15% or so than the stocker, but nothing to really notice, at least with me. I don't care either way, really, they are as much or a bit cheaper than the stocker, and now I have four batteries to use, though one of the stocker's plugs isn't cooperating with the helicopter's plug.
ORIGINAL: hottrk51 Need tips for making MCX faster. Weight transfer? Don't want to cut it up. Any ideas?
Do the 4 in 1 mod also. Cut the upper mounting post back so that the top of the board slopes back toward the swashplate. Only cut enough so that the control linkages run parallel to the board. This gives the linkages maximum throw in all directions. I did it but still waiting on a backordered inner shaft and hub so not sure how it works. But there is plenty of evidence showing it is a good mod.
