RE: can`t get os 120 ax started ?
Thanks to everyone who helped me out with this. I changed the HS needle to 2 1/2 out and primed it well and the 1st bump with the starter and the engine fired up. Man this engine runs great and will idle forever. Thanks again to everyone for all the valuable tips. Regards, Frank

RE: can`t get os 120 ax started ?
The engine is turned sideways. When I prime, I do see fuel coming thru the line. Frank

RE: can`t get os 120 ax started ?
so far the glow looks good, nice and hot. I`ll try opening the LS needle and see if that works? I`m surprised I can`t even get it to pop? Frank

RE: can`t get os 120 ax started ?
Well so far I checked the glow and it is bright and hot. I did not pull the tank yet, but I betting the plumbing is correct?I will try to open the low speed needle a little more and see if that helps. I would think that it should at lease pop ? Frank

can`t get os 120 ax started ?
Hi guys, I purchased a used os 120ax engine on RC Groups a few months ago. I finally got around to mounting it on a plane and tried starting it today. I left the cowling off the plane so I can check for leaks and so on. The carb was primed and seems to be drawing fuel. The glow was nice and hot and I`m using 10% fuel. I could not get the motor to even pop. The high speed is open 4 turns , and the low speed open about 3/4 turn with the carb completely closed. The motor seemed to be in good shape with great compression. Oh, also I using a bissom pitts muffler. I could not turn the motor over with my 12v starter so I was flipping the prop by hand.Any ideas? thanks, Frank

RE: prop pitch
ORIGINAL: jaka Hi! It's all about choosing the right engine for a ertain model. A 1.20 two stroke in a Great Planes ''Shoestring'' (Which is just a sport model, not a racer)is going to add too much weight to it! That means a wing loading that makes for too fast landings. Using 12'' pitch prop is adding problems at landings. It's always vital to build a model light! Being a pylonracer for more than 30 years I know that first hand. Problem is that many sportfliers tend to put in too big engines in their planes and then wonder why they have trouble slowing their planes down for landing.[:o] Trimming is vital for any airplane! The rule is to trim a plane so that as little elevator trow as possible be used, many sportflires tend to forget this! In my Q-500 racers (and F3D racers) I use as little as 3mm elevator trow (3mm up and 3mm down, meassured at the trailing edge), still they are manuverable as a F3A plane.
I agree 100% jaka that lite planes fly better... With that said the os 120ax is appox. 30oz w/m as compared to an os 75ax which is 27oz w/m and the os 61 fx which was appox. 26 oz w/m. For a 1/4 scale plane with dry wt. of 8.0 lbs, I don`t think that 5oz either way will make that big of differance? Frank

RE: prop pitch
Thanks guys, lots of good info . here. I`m in the building process now, It`s the dead of winter in the Midwest and I`ll have to wait til Spring. I`v been away from fuel airplanes for a while and been flying mostly EDF`s. I`v always liked the Golden Age airplanes so when the Shoestring 1/4 scale came up on ebay, well I just could`nt resist. RE: prop pitch
BTY, When this plane was in production, most guys were flying it with a OS 91 or ST 90 with 13x8 props. I fugured that the os 120ax is the same size as the 91 fx , so I went with more power and better motor 120ax. Frank

I`m putting the OS 120 ax on a GP Shoestring Racer 1/4 scale arf with 60.5" WS and dry wt. about 8.0. This model has been long discountiued, its a big model with a wide wing and wanted to fly it at the 110-120 range. Frank

prop pitch
Hi Guys, I have a question about prop pitch. I have a os 120 ax and 14x12 prop and I`m worried about landing speed. Will the landing speed be much greater than lets say 14x8?My feild is not that big and I`m worried about running out of space? thanks, Frank

Thanks guys for the replys. I won`t be racing, just a everyday flyer. The Tower 75 looks like it may be a good choice. thanks, Frank

Tower 75 and Bisson Pitts muffler
Hi Guys, I picked up a GP Shoestring racer 1/4 scale (old version) and wanted to power it with a Tower 75 and pitts muffler. What prop would you recommend for speed? You think it would be enough power for a 8.0 lbs plane, or should I go with an os 90 or 120? Thanks in advance. Frank

GP Shoestring 1/4 scale
Hi Guys, I just picked up a new in box GP Shoestring Racer 1/4 scale arf and was wondering what would be a good engine choice? I have a Tower pro 75 that I can use with a pitts muffler, but would that be enough power? Would an os 90 or 120 ax be a better choice? I been away from glow engine s for a few years and been flying mostly electrics but could not resist this 1/4 scale Shoestring. Thanks in advance for your help. Frank

using a seperate BEC
Hi Guys, I want to buy an electric B-17 that uses 7 servos and has electric retracts that use lots of amps. I heard it is best to use a sperate BEC? Can someone please explane how this works and how to set it up? All of my electric flying has been done with small parkflyers and EDF`swhich had a esc. with 3amp bec, so I never had a need for a sperate BEC. thanks, Frank

refresh my memory please
I guys, I have been away from nitro engines for a few years ( been playing with EDF jets) and I want to finish a nitro plane I started several years ago. I have a Satio 82 I will be mounting inverted. There is a nipple on the bottom of the crankcase, is that a vent that must be vented outside the cowling? Thanks in advance . Frank

RE: Phase 3 Squall
Set a timer for 3 minutes then land and go home and check your mahs in your batterys. Then you can increase your times form there. I usually do not discharge my lipos below 3.4v per cell. As far as the servos, I use the hs 55 in mine so yours will be fine. Frank

RE: Phase 3 Squall
Hi zsultan, I have both jets, and I tell you the Squall wins hands down. I also could not resist the 3s Squall for 80 bucks. I don`t even use the recommended 2500 mah lipos, because all I own is 35c 2200 lipos. This keeps the plane nice and lite, good vertical and speed. I set my timer for 3.5 minutes and land after mostly full trottle flying with plenty of safe battery mah left. I set my CG at 50mm behide were the wing and fuse meet. I grab the fuse near the tailpipe and give it a good throw and it climbs out at 30 degrees. The plane has no bad habits, but use some expo because the ailirons can be sensitve. I also started with about 2mm up elevator because it is a delta wing plane. Take your time building the plane nice and straight and you will be very happy with it . It is a real honest no nosense airplane. Good Luck, Frank

viscosity cup
Hello, I like weathing and detailing models with my airbrush but sometimes get inconsistant results. I think the reason is because when I thin it down I am not getting the proper viscosity? I think I remember seeing some kind of device that that helps you find the measure viscosity? Does anyone know anything about this and were I can find this tool? Regards, Frank

RE: E-flite P-47D Help
RockEn Roller6, I have over 50 flights on my P-47 with a E-flite Park 480 and E-flite 40amp. esc. This combo is great, I fly off grass so I removed the landing gear . This plane and combo flies as good as some of my 60 size glow birds and as fast. If you look on ebay and RCU you can sometimes get great deals on these motors and esc. This plane is too good to put underpowered systems in to save a few bucks. Invest in a good power system and you won`t be sorry. good luck, Frank

RE: hyperion vs thunder power
Hi, My question is to cornj. I have 3s2200 V2 extreme packs and wanted to buy a few more packs, are you saying the 2250 pro power packs are a better battery? I guess the extreme are 25c and the 2250 pro power are 30c and about 8 bucks cheaper. Frank
