RE: Great Planes Cherokee ARF
Hi Guys, No pictures, but the maiden flight went really well, although with the throws set at the recommended values it was pretty snakey!! I now fly it mostly on the low settings and only use the high settings for aerobatic manoevers. I have no trouble with the wheel pants on grass. With the big motor and lots of battery power I usually fly about 1/2 throttle. My flaps are continuously variable so that I can pick as much or little flap as I want. Haven't had to use them as yet. With the batter weight, the plane is nose heavy, so had to add an ounce or so to the tail end for balance. This ensures that I come in very quickly. Good Flying

RE: Great Planes Cherokee ARF
Hi Guys, I fixed the same problem by using the little round spacers they sent with the kit for use with the ESC. They work just fine. You CA them to the inside wall of the pant over where the landing gear is supposed to go in. Works fine. I'm just waiting for some calm weather to fly mine. I have a 42-60-800 rimfire and 2, 3700 mAh batteries in series. Problem with the big batteries is it drives the weight up to 7 lbs and it is in the nose. Had to add about 1 oz of lead to the tail to get it to balance. Problem with the upfront weight is that if it ever comes in hard on the nose the ship is done for. I've noticed in this thread that a number of folks have the old kit version either unbuilt or just hanging around. Man get it together and get out and fly it. I flew mine on a GMS 47 for over six years before a crash in 50 km/h winds finished it.

RE: Great Planes Cherokee ARF
One of you built the cherokee with an electric set up as specified by GP. Have you flown it yet? Haven't seen any results in the thread. I have a rimfire 42-60-800 for mine but have yet to do the building. This thread has been great for info.

RE: Whats the Best prop size for OS.46FX
I flew mine on an 11 x 6 APC and occasionally on 11 x 5 (when I didn't have and 11 x 6 available). I was using and MDS .46 as my power plant. It was one of the early ones with no problems.

RE: any one kit bash a GP Cherokee 40?
Where in the world were you when I was looking for a kit to build to replace my badly dammaged Cherokee 40. That is a dream ship to fly. I flew it on an MDS .46 and it screamed. 1/2 throttle was plenty for most manouevers. Flew just like a pattern ship - right where you pointed it. If you're still interested in selling? rather than twining send me an e-mail

RE: Great Planes Cherokee 40 C.G.?
Sorry, forgot to add that I have a full set of plans and manual for the plane. I'd consider making a copy and sending to you at duplication and shipping costs. I'd let you know the cost in advance.

RE: Great Planes Cherokee 40 C.G.?
I flew this plane on and MDS .46 and it was a screamer. I flew mostly at 1/2 throttle. Plane would even fly inverted at 1/2 throttle. The rudder is just a tad on the small side for knife edge. So if you wanted to do a small mod I'd increase the rudder by at least 1/2" and more towards 3/4 for more authority. You can damp down the throws for easier handling. I did this routinely for takeoff and landing to avoid the overcontrol wobbling that can happen when flying in gusty winds. Once airborne switch to high rates and it flys like a pattern ship.

RE: Great Planes Cherokee
I'm about to build this plane. However, I don't believe the engine they recommend is powerful enough. I'll be using an 42-60-800 rim fire on 6S lipo (2 x 3S for simpler charging and costs). The set up they recommend is at the upper limit of the motor based on the plane's weight so I opted for the next size up.

RE: Great Planes Cherokee 40
Hi, I flew this plane for 6 years with an MDS .46 engine in it. Flew just like a pattern ship. Was my pride and joy and a thrill to fly. Did most aerobatic manoevers other than 3D. The MDS would actually fly the plane on 1/2 throttle and inverted as well. Unfortunately it met with an obstacle while flying in 50 km/h winds. I plan to replace it with their ARF version as the kit version is no longer available. Enjoy the plane!!!

RE: rapid voltage drop
Hi Phil, Not drawing more than 10 amps. More like 6.

RE: rapid voltage drop
hi Bassman, I think you hit it right with the "C" rating. I've been using the following: Thunder Power 7.4 V/1320 mAh 10-12 C Constant 16 C burst Absolute Power 7.4 V/1000 mAh hr probably 8-10 C (C rating not given on battery pack) Absolute Power 11.1 V/1000 mAhr probbly 8-10 C (C rating not given on battery pack) Cheers!! rapid voltage drop
I'm running a 380 brushed motor with at 9 x 6 prop using either 2 or 3 cell lipo packs. Voltage keeps dropping out of range after a minute. Amps has not exceeded limit of ESC (pico 20 amp). What is cause of loss of voltage? Do I need a smaller or larger prop. I've also tried a 9 x 4 prop with similar results. [&o]

RE: BRUSHLESS MINI SPORTSTER
I plan to buy a mini sportster and install a Hi Max 2816-0890 in it as I have that from a previous experiment. Is this too much engine? Should I consider going up to the super sportster. TNX

RE: GMS Engine Tuning Problem
A very interesting thread indeed. I also have two GMS 47's. Both have run without adjustment right out of the box, including my latest with a rear mount needle valve. I tend to run them on about 7.5% nitro. (I mix my own buying 5 and 10%). I find that these engines need considerably less nitro. The power is superb and the enhancement to the models performance is very rewarding. One engine is in a Falcon Ready on floats, the other is in the 40 sized Ultra Stick. Good flying to all.

What is the color scheme of your Dad's plane. I'm planing on doing mine in red and white with a checkerboard pattern on the underside.

RE: Great Lakes Trainer
Matt, I obtained the kit from an estate sale which I handled for a friend of mine. I have the plans and could arrange for you to get a copy of them. I'll also post a few pictures of the construction. You will note that I have lightened the structure by not having the heavy landing gear shown, and by making the cabane struts of light ply.

RE: Herr Aqua Star seaplane
I have a couple of Aqua Stars that I want to covert as you did. Do you have any drawings of the expanded power pod? Did you place the batteries in the powerpod or put them down below in the cabin? With a lithium battery up in the power pod would that have a bad impact on the CG for rolls etc.?

Great Lakes Trainer
I have built the Great Lakes Trainer, a bipe, and was planing on using a geared (1/85:1) speed 400 motor with an 8 x 6 E prop. When I chose this powerplant I thought the weight would be around 500-550 gm. Now it looks as though the weight will be closer to 600 gm. Will this motor be sufficient? I have a Li-Po 3s 1500 pack to power the motor.
