RE: Enya R120 Blowby?
Hey CaptJohn I really haven't messed with this engine in a while but I plan on putting it on a 90 size Extra 260 here in the next couple months. I really don't know anything about converting it to gas but I will say I have a few Enyas ( all 2-strokes) and this 120r 4 stroke and all of em are sweet engines. My only complaint with the 120r is that the glow plug angles towards the prop so remote glow is a must but other than that it is smooth. Buy one if you can find one!! Scotty

RE: Enya R120 Blowby?
I don't mind the mess at all. I have prolly about 20 engines that i mess with but are all 2-strokes so i'm familiar with exhaust residue. I just didn't know if maybe i had a worn ring or something because of the excessive amount on this particular engine. It does have really good compression so maybe it was hardly ever ran and i need to keep breaking it in. thanks scotty

Enya R120 Blowby?
Hello Been flying 2-strokes for bout 10 years and now trying my hand at 4-strokes. Just got a (what i think is a steal) on an Enya R120 4-stroke for $150 and have it bolted to my test stand. It looks like it has never seen fuel until now, fires up with just a quick blip of the starter, idles around 2700 and blasts out at 12 and change with a MAS 16x8. Throttle response is instant with a little leaning on the low end. My question is it suppose to have soooo much blowby? I have a feed line plumbed to the needle valve and a spitter line coming from the crankcase nipple on the backplate just runs off the table and man does it spit fuel. I run a 10oz tank on the test stand and prolly a good table spoon ends up on the table from the crankcase line. Just wondering if this is normal? Scotty

RE: magnum 91fs rpm ?
Hi Ed Yes sir....well, i flew at Eglin from around 02-07 then moved to Maryland. I just moved back to Destin in late Feb and rejoined the club but haven't had a chance to go flying yet. I run the parasail boat "SkyScraper" out of Dewey Destin Marina on the north side of the Destin bridge and work everyday so i can save enough dough to take off all winter. This time of year I just tinker with engines and dream of my next end of season treat to myself (new plane).... I really tried to make it to the Memorial Day fly in but a relief captain wanted $200 to cover me for the day so I put on flip flops and went to work. I really wanted to show off this nice little scale J-3 done up in the New Mexico National Guard colors.... Well, 2 more months of season and then i can go fly every morning till next March. I never went to Holly Field but look forward to meeting ya out at Test site C-3. Scotty

RE: magnum 91fs rpm ?
thanks for the replies.....i've been thinking about it and i'm at sea level on the coast of Florida and the air is thick. Plus it should gain about 20% rpm when flying so it should be good to go. Scotty

RE: magnum 91fs rpm ?
the timing mark was just like the one in the pic above and with the glow plug out it looks to me like the piston is at TDC. Not sure i wanna go pulling this thing apart so i may just leave it alone and fly it the way it is. thanks scotty

magnum 91fs rpm ?
Hello I just got a clean, used Magnum xl 91fs and love it. It starts easy, has great transition but I'm not sure I'm getting full RPM's out of it. It idles perfectly at about 2600-2700 and I'm only getting 8000 on the top. It's turning a MAS 14x8 K-series on 15% CoolPower that I added about 30 ml of oil to a gallon. My buddy flies only YS engines, is a pattern master pilot, and highly recommended the additional oil. Iv'e been flyin glow for about ten years but i've only used 2-strokes and this is my first attempt at a 4 banger. I should mention that I bought a used tach so as to measure rpms and the guy said he checked against another for correct results but who knows. If i didn't have a tach, I would say "man, this this has awesome idle and immediately screams to WOT" and it seems to have plenty of power. I guess my question is two-part......1)does it really matter if my reading is low and it still has enough power to fly a plane to my liking or 2)should i just get a new tach to see if i got bamboozled? RE: Are the Evolution engines reliable?
wow, i used to get some dead sticks on every engine i ran until i finally figured out i was too rich on the low end. Let her idle for at least 45 seconds and then PUNCH it WOT, if it dies your tooof fat. Lean on it a little at atime. 1/16 turn increments. Do it again. Running fat and slow will choke'm out everytime. High spped needle is easy but it takes patience and ground time to really tune a 2-stroker!! "Tell em' Scotty told ya or go look for the nearest sheep!"

RE: Are the Evolution engines reliable?
it seems to me that the main difference in engines these days is the metallurgy. some are better quality than others but i have cheaper Magnums that run just as good as higher priced OS. I don't wanna compare cuz I don't care as long as they fly the plane. If I get a couple seasons out of an engine i feel i got my moneys worthe no matter what it cost. so JAKA is right, most engines today are fine if you can get the tuning right. just takes some time and practice. the one thing i keep in mind is "You get what you pay for". my fun-fly planes and sport planes get engine swaps all the time just to keep myself tinkering ( this is a hobby ), while my "Pride and Joy" gets the best engine I can afford for it. RE: Are the Evolution engines reliable?
My 100 runs as well as all my other engines. I got it used for $100 with Pitts muffler and it wouldn't start. About an hour on the bench and it starts first flick of the stick, has great idle, screaming top-end and as smooth as transition you can ask of a 2-stroke. They key with most engines is getting the LSN and HSN set properly. I use OS A3's in all my engines along with 15% CoolPower. Alot of people shun CoolPower but my instructor was an FAI Competitor for some 20-30 years, good enough for him, good enough for me! By the way, I've swapped that engine around on prolly 4 different planes and maybe 100 flights, not a single dead stick. It did fatten up on the low end once and I could tell immediately cuz it got kinda "boggy" when I punched it from a low RPM. No biggie, just landed, leaned LSN 1/16 turn, fired back up and took-off. If you like tinkering with small engines there are some great deals to be had with alot of folks switchin to 4-strokes and gassers. Me, I just LOVE my little 2-strokers!!!! Scotty

RE: 3s Lipo for power panel?
it works great!!!! i have a Pacific Aeromodels power panel mounted in the box, drilled a small hole in the tray and passed the wire up thru it. Then soldered on a male Traxxas connector and velcroed the Lipo to the wall of the tray. It's out of the way and super light weight. Did a quick field charge on my plane and tX yesterday at the field and it was fine. I'm using Blue Lipo 11.1v 3000mah 20c from HobbyPartz that was like $17. I'm so proud of it I think I'll go take a pic.....LOL! scotty

RE: Enya CX 40? -not pulling fuel
Thee are probably two screws, a low speed needle screw and a throttle stop screw. The throttle stop screw would be standing straight up and down beside the throttle opening. It probably never needs adjusting unless someone changed its setting but just make sure you can close the throttle barrel all the way so you can kill the engine. The other screw on the side of the carb is the Low Speed Needle. Enyas I'm faniliar with are simple air bleed type. You should see a very small hole on the front of the carb (look at the pic I posted a few posts back), and that screw basically blocks the hole. A good place to start is with the screw half way across the hole. I have to use a small flashlight most of the time to see it. It worrks opposite of HSN, meanning turning it in will richen the mixture and turning out will lean it. Start in the middle if you have already changed the setting. If you haven't moved it I would leave it alone for now and see how it runs. Now that you have gotten the fuel system to function properly you will just have to run the engine to adjust it. With all the snow I imagine this might take a while, huh? Two things.....1) get a camera so you can post pics and 2) an electric starter will be an invaluable tool that will last for years ( every club I've been in has the "ole fella" with a crooked finger) scotty

RE: Enya CX 40? -not pulling fuel
it's very possible, without seeing it I can't tell you. If you turn the high speed needle out 3 turns and blast fluid in the fuel intake nipple, it should blast out of the spraybar. If not then you have a clog. scotty

3s Lipo for power panel?
Hello I did some searching but couldn't really find anything on power panels except 12v 7a lead acid batteries. Anyway, I'm rigging up a new field box and want to know if I can connect a 3s 3000mah 20c Lipo to a Pacific Aeromodels power panel. I will only be using the panel if I need a field charge on my Tx or Rx. More than likely just the Tx becuase all my flight batteries are like 2000-2400mah NiMH which last all day. I've already strapped a 4s 3000mah 20c to my12v starter and it works awesome and I put a 3s 3000mah 20c on box to run the fuel pump. Just making this as portable as possible with what I have on hand but I'm not reall familiar with power panels as I always charge everything at home but wanna be ready for a long spring day when it gets here. thanks Scotty

RE: Enya CX 40? -not pulling fuel
WD-40 is OK but not the greatest carb cleaner. I prefer to use SeaFoam carb cleaner from NAPA. That sh*t is AWESOME. It's pressurized too and had way better cleaning ability. I'm telling you though, a big cyringe with some fuel tubing attached is a perfect method of putting cleaning pressure in both directions. You can manually adjust how much pressure you supply continuously while increasing a little at a time. It's not just one quick blast from an aerosol can. You'll also be able to use it later to pressurize/ drain a fuel tank if you need to. I keep one in my field box and find myself using it evry now and again. SeaFoam also comes in a non-aerosol can and you can use that to clean the system. It's also great in just about any small engine. My motorcycle was running like crap on one cylinder and I put a couple 3 capfulls in 1 gallon tank and within 10 miles it was running perfect. I'm gonna go take a quick pic of my pressure device and post it. Scotty

RE: Enya CX 40? -not pulling fuel
i had the same problem with an Enya 45 CX and once I got it straightened out it is a "screamin!" lil engine. Couple a questions....1) are you sure the tank is plumbed properly and clunk/filter isn't gummed up. 2) exhaust pressure nipple is clear 3) definately replace any loose screws on backplate / check headbolts for tightness and replace o-ring around carb neck while its off.....i have a CarQuest right around corner that has wide selection of 0-rings for like .40cents. i like to use a big cyringe from kitchen gadget section of walmart with fuel tubing on it to pressurize fuel/ vent lines if i suspect blockage. you said it would start if primed with a little fuel. if you are VERY CAREFUL!!!!!, as sonn as yo have it fired up "POP" your finger over the carb intake for a second to choke the engine. that will create greater suction to tank. also make sure the high speed needle is at least 2 turns out . my Enya runs slightly rich at 1 1/4 turns out. not sure which low speed needle you have. if it is airbleed ( little hole on front of carb with screw on side to open/close make sure hole is about 1/2 open. keep trying and you will get it. these are awesome little engines, oh and mine wouldn't run for crap on 15% but when I switched to 10% it works perfect. scotty i don't know how to post a link but my YouTube Channel is SunnyFlyer1 and you can see a short vid of my Enya. It was completely clooged up and the throttle wouldn't budge but patience and persistence pay off!!! i think i bought this engine for $5 and a couple bucks in o-ring and spray cleaner.

RE: Which lipo for driving a starter?
hey there, i just started experimenting with this last week and am very pleased with results. i hace 3s 4s and a 6s all on different starters. i think 4s on any 12v starter will give you plenty of starting power as it will easily spin my brand new Magnum 120 2-stroke and my buddies YS 170. i have a sullivan Dynatron laying around and strapped the 6s batt to it and HOLY-JESUS it'll just about start a Mac truck. Wayyyy toooo much but now i know. 3s should be fine for up to .60 size but i would recommend 4s 2000-3000mah and 20c is plenty. just my opinion!!! Scotty

well now, it would look pretty silly walking around draggin a Lipo 5' behind you cuz you didn't cut the leads!!! very true though, the shorter the lead, the more DC power there is.

i don't crunch numbers or even really care to but results are what pulls my britches up. when i connected the Royal starter to a 12v lawn tractor battery or the battery in my F-150 it still was WEAK but once i connected it to a 14.8v 3000mah 20c Lipo it easily cranks a Magnum 120 2-stroke. i've got a Sullivan Dynatron and a 22.1v 3000mah 30c Lipo on the way and I can guarandangTee ya it's gonna crank up something or twist my arm off trying!! hey Shark, i don't know what a bump box is but 3s is 11.1v and charged prolly close to what, 13? 3s should be good for any 12v application but i just needed more and the starter can handle it for short bursts. i mean, i don,t run a starter more than 4-5 seconds at a time. rich, preciate the advice on the case. i just slapped this together to see how it would work and for right now am just very careful when i handle it and set it down. i do plan on making something real nice with aircraft plywood i have lying around to give a new starter an old skool look. scotty

RE: 12v starter Lipo battery?
Hi All OK, so this is what I came up with. I found a NIB vintage Royal Heavy Duty starter for $20. With leads on I hooked it to my 12v Lb battery and it would barely turn my GMS .76, but once I connected it to a 3000mah 14.8v 20c Lipo it will easily crank my Magnum 120 2-stoke. It'll start my buddies YS 170 4-stroke easily too. I have no doubt that this would really give a ton of extra punch to any 12v starter, in fact I'm gonna connect it to my cheapy Tower Hobbies starter just for sh*ts and giggles. I know the battery is a little much but it was on sale for $22 so for under $50 I have a starter that will turn anything as big as I plan on flying. Scotty

RE: 12v starter Lipo battery?
Awesome!!!! Thanks for all the input. I'm still thinkin 14.8v 20c anything from 2000-4200mah as I want some crankin power. Most of my engines are .46- .76 but when I hit the 1.00 and 1.20 2-strokes I don't even want to consider the starter might not turn them. Actually, all my engines will flip start but gettin em primed is a pain so a strong starter will really help. Plus, this is just a side project for me to tinker with and have something not many if any of the folks at the field have. Thanks again Scotty

12v starter Lipo battery?
Hi There Just curious, i want to make my 12v starter for nitro planes portable by strapping a Lipo battery to it. Is this a bad idea? I'm looking at Lipo packs and not sure what mah or "c" rating will work. Thinking 4s (14.8v) and around 3000mah 20c. I know the voltage is high but i figure short 5-7 second burtsts for engine starting would be OK. Anyone tried this or have any ideas? Thanks Scotty

RE: Bridi Vagabond 40 by Bluejay Models
ya know. i never really looked into it but now that you mention carb leak on the GMS it makes sense. i mean, mine idles forever even with the throttle barrel completely (?) closed. i assume it's still getting fuel somehow but i have to either pinch the fuel line or pull it off to shut her down. i guess this isn't such a "bad problem" to have so i just figure eventually it'll seal itself up.....i don't know. sorry to go on about engines in your build thread here so i'll leave it at "good decision on your pick!" scotty
