RE: Wing Mfg. B-25 Build
Well guy's, it looks like I jumped the gun. I'm going to have to build my FAI B25 from scratch. The Wing Mfg kit will be great for Sport Scale, But it's not going to make it in FAI. There are just too many things to change. So I'll put this thread on hold and build the kit later.[8|] Steve

RE: Scratch-built Fokker Dr.I 1/6 scale
Just rub it down with the bottom of a candle. I used a stick product used to lube wooden drawer slides (old school[:D]) but I think any kind of wax will keep the CA from sticking to the jig. Steve

RE: Scratch-built Fokker Dr.I 1/6 scale
I used a different approach from the Clamp/Form. I printed my pattern and glued it to a piece of 1/2" balsa. I glued on alignment blocks and spacers to raise the rib parts to the half way point of the cap strips. Coat the whole jig with wax to keep stuff from sticking. Pin the rib to the jig and, starting at the front, glue the cap strip to the rib with medium CA. For your ribs you could cap the front with a shorter piece, wrapped around the whole front end, or maybe two pieces 1/2 the thickness of the rest of the cap strips.

RE: Wing Mfg. B-25 Build
Thanks for all the tips. I got a set of Robarts from a friend today. I'll build a mock up and let you know how they work. I took a field trip to the Air force museum at Wright Patterson. I took 148 pics of their B25. Tevans55, you'll like this. Look familiar? Steve

I finished framing the nacelles yesterday. I drilled the lightening holes with a Forestner bit. The next step will be to install the retracts. Since I don't have them yet, I started working on the Fuselage. Steve

RE: Pneumatic vs mechanical retracts
The retracts are for a B25 with an 84" span. The mains are 4" and the nose is 2 3/4". They need to sequence just like John's B36.(Sweeeeeet!!) There are two ways to operate functions on a control line model. The old way is to have extra lines. The new way uses an electronic setup that works like a radio except that the signal is sent along the lines instead of radio waves. It uses the same systems as R/C to control all functions except elevator control. That has to be mechanically linked to the handle. Steve

RE: Pneumatic vs mechanical retracts
Watching video of B25s, the gear moves slow and smooth. Also, the main doors open to lower the gear and then close, leaving a small door open for the leg. the small leg door is linked to the leg, but the main doors open and close independently. I hope I can keep that in order![8|] Steve

RE: Wing Mfg. B-25 Build
Richard made the team, as did Frank Beaty. Allen Goff is first alternate. The biggest challenge will be weight. In F4B the limit is 6 kilos, or about 13.2lbs The box says 12 to 18 lbs,so I'll be making a lot of lightening holes! As for flying this large a plane as control line, you adjust the angle that the lines enter the plane (rake), the rudder offset, and ailerons to get the right amount of pull on the lines. Besides, at 240 lbs, I make a great anchor![:D] Steve

Wing Mfg. B-25 Build
Hi guys. I haven't been around for awhile. It's a shame when work cuts into my hobby time. Anyway, some of you might remember the SE5a I built a few years back. Well, the good news is, I won the NATs with it and a spot on the USA team for the World Champs next summer. The bad news is, I demolished it on my last flight. So, I have nine months to build another model to take to Poland. A friend sold me the B 25 kit. I think a twin engine Bomber should fly in the wind better than a WWI Bipe. This plane has an 84" span and will have a pair of .60s to pull it around. Since I'll be flying it in F4B (Control Line Scale) I'm posting the build on the Control Line Forum. Drop by and help me out anytime. I'll need it! http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_9019281/tm.htm Steve

The wings are foam core and the rest is pretty straight forward balsa and ply construction. The first thing I did was to put all of the cut parts on the copier. That will make it easier to make repairs later. I'll start gluing in the morning. Steve P.S. Here's a pic of the SE5a to jog your memory.

Stinson Reliant Rehab
Last year I was "Given" an old Stinson Reliant. A friend bought it for the ignition engine, and the plane decorated his shop fo a couple of years. It was then given to another friend where it collected dust for a couple more. When I asked "What's that" he replied "It's a Stinson and it's yours". I don't how old it is. It's from a Cleavland Model and Supply Co. Kit, 1/6 scale with an 84" span. It had a "tray" for the ignition engine setup, and a control line bellcrank. Never had a radio in it! When I got it the covering had been mostley removed. Some of the glue joints were coming loose so I started out regluing all the joints.(when you see the pics you'll see what a job that was The rudder was too warped to fix, so I replaced it. I replaced the "tray" with hardwood beam engine mounts and installed an RCV .91CD engine with a ten oz. tank. I'm using my new Spektrum DX7 radio for control. the covering is Solartex painted with latex paint and sealed with nelsons clear. I made the cowl using the lost foam method . the pilot is an action figure WWII British pilot. Final weight is 8.5 lb Steve P.S. Abu, the roundels are for you

RE: glow fuel proof paint
Rustoleum enamels are fuel proof. I have used red, white, blue, and black. If you need custom colors, you can use any latex paint and then coat it with polyurethane. Minwax Polycrylic dries crystal clear and won't yellow. Steve

RE: The Great Scale Covering Debate
I guess I don't understand using dope "to fill the weave". Using thinned latex, you have to work it into the weave for it to stick. I try very hard Not to fill in the weave. Two thin coats of latex and two thin coats of Poly gives a nice light finish, and after two contest seasons with 10% Nitro the finish is still fine. Steve

RE: The Great Scale Covering Debate
Hi Don. When I covered my SE5a with Koverall, I used Stix It (Same as Balsa loc etc.) on the frame and ironed down the edges. I like the larger weave of Koverall. It dosen't fill up with paint as quickly as Solar Tex. Two coats of thinned down latex house paint (brushed into the fabric)and two coats of Poly and it's done. Steve

RE: 1/3 Scale SE5a Scratch Build
Hi Guys! No, I didn't fall off the planet.[:D] It's been a really busy summer. I spent a lot of time at the field and finally learned to fly R/C! But fall is here and the fever is on me to build. I completed my CAD plans this summer and had them printed. I just completed the first wing panel using the lighter materials I mentioned a few posts back. Total weight per panel? 18 oz! Now that's a number I can live with. I already have all the rib parts cut out and the full ribs are assembled, so I should have the wings finished in a couple of weeks and be starting on the fuse. Ah! It's good to be back in the shop! Steve
