RE: AVRO LANCASTER
Craig The engine is an RCGF 15cc. I test fit it in to one of the cowls and it will go, the spark plug will stick out of the bottom and the stock muffler would stick out the side. I hope to use a pitts style muffler that would be concealed alot more. I also set the motor on the plans at it will be the full of the firewall but it will fit. Chris

RE: AVRO LANCASTER
I have been following this thread for a while and I am just at the collecting parts stage. I have all the bits and pieces from Tony and have just ordered all the balsa from Trilium Balsa here in Ontario. I purchased a nice 15cc gas motor and test ran it last weekend. It seems great so I will be getting three more. I had a tuff time deciding what I wanted to use for power. Electric seemed to win out for a while but I just could not stand building this model and not have that great multi engine sound when it flies. Normand, your build looks museum quality. I don't plan to put as much detail, I will pretty much stick to the basics. I tend to build fairly fast (about 20-30 hours a week)so we might be done about the same time, we don't live to far away from each other maybe we could do some formation flying:). Did you put any right or left thrust in the motors or is it just how the plans are. Chris

RE: Top Flite Giant P47 arf IS coming
Gasoline is cheap, gas engines are cheap Gas engines are reliable, I have never had a dle or dm quit in the air once they are broke in and set up thats it and as for the slime and clean up with gas there is no clean up finally with the dle and all my batteries mounted in front of the fire wall it didn't need any weight to balance it Ok gas it is, just do it. RE: Top Flite Giant P47 arf IS coming
The DLE and of course the DM both can use the pitts style muffler. I use the one from BISSON mufflers and the sound is great. A small amount of massaging required on the bottom of the engine box but no big deal.

RE: Top Flite Giant P47 arf IS coming
I agree the DLE 55 is perfect match, FYI being the cheap guy that I am I recently tried a DM55 which in my opinion is the same engine as a DLE and it gave the exact same performance in my P47 for alot less money

I just sent for my plans and bits from Tony. Can't what to start studying the plans. For those of use that don't have a metal lathe or the skill to use it ( that would be me) what are you using for retracts.

Those best pilots are really nice, I have used the 1/5th scale pilots from Roy Vaillencourt (Vally aviation). They are $25-$30 range, fit well and paint up nice.

RE: Top Flite Giant P47 arf IS coming
Arsenaga Hi I have been flying this bird for two seasons and it is the best flying model I own. I like to fly it in a very scale like manner and to be honest I never use the high rates. It does all the required manouvers as they should be. The first few flights I was lulled by her stability and treated her like a sport plane. Which was get her lined up, cut the throttle and glide in flaring at the at the last moment. Sometimes it would work but generally she would stall out at the last couple of feet off the deck. I beat up the gear pretty good the first month. I also did not use flaps, mistake, it has them use them. Like all warbirds this plane needs to be flown in with power. The link below is awesome and pretty much what I follow. My P47 does not require any down trim with flaps deployed. I drop them on the down wind leg and it takes a bit for her to settle in to the glide. I keep power on so she does not slow down to much and fly her to the landing. It would be interesting to hear what others do. Hopefully this helps and good luck http://www.rcwarbirds.com/Techniques/Technigues.htm#t1

How does that Solartex and latex paint work. I hate wrinkles in the heat. That's why I was thinking about fiberglass. Any one tried it?

Ya the drop tanks are nice. That plane belongs to a friend Alfie, he did alot of nice work with panel lines etc. and he flies it as great as it looks. I am the guy in the red shirt with my bird in front of me. It is pretty much stock. I have seen your web set it is excellent. love the videos.

RE: Top Flite Giant P47 arf IS coming
This is my second season with the P47 and like terry it has become my old reliable. This is the nicest flying model I have. I am running the DLE55 and this engine is a great match for the plane. Lots of power and dependability. We had three of these at our zone funfly a few weeks back all in the air at the same time. And all running the same engine. Terry I read that article on fiberglassing with out epoxy and actually tried it out on an old wing that I had. I used minwax polyurethane and it seemed to work well. The drying time was a couple of hours between coat though. A buddy suggested that I do not use the water base polyurethane because the water would warp the balsa. any thoughts?. Do you use any automotive type spot putty or go right to primer and then paint. I was also hoping to use latex paint.

RE: Top Flite Giant P47 arf IS coming
Captain Ron Great to here that your maiden went well, you will love this bird, she makes us all look good. By the way I see that you did some weathering. I did some on monocote using acrylic model paint. It looked awesome and then I cleaned the plane up with windex and it all came off. I thought it was because I used water based paint so then I airbrushed again using oil based paint and it too came off when I cleaned the plane. Did you seal yours with a clear? or what was your process thanks chris

RE: H9 Spitfire Build
Hey So i have had my spit for two seasons and totaled and rebuilt it three times. this plane is great in the air but I cannot for the life of me get it on the ground without wrecking something. I had all but given up on rebuilding it for the forth time until I saw your video. Great inspiration and a very sweet landing.

Hey P47 Pilot The pictures through the link are great, it looked a bit could for a summer day? If I am not mistaken you are runnung a DLE55 like I am. mine balanced with all my batteries on top of the engine box just in front of the fire wall with no added weight. When you changed to the retractable tail wheel did the balance change much and how is it working so far?

RE: Top Flite Giant P47 arf IS coming
ORIGINAL: P47Pilot We have just finished our annual Warbird Weekend (August 27-29). I put 10 flights on the TF GS P-47, and it performed flawlessly throughout the weekend. The colour-scheme certainly stood out among the camo WWII birds, and apparently it was a real crowd-pleaser. I append a shot of a banking low-pass in front of the crowd (Courtesy of Kjell Thore Leinhardt). You are right about the colour scheme it looks so great during the low fast fly bys. it appaers that you may have the same issue that i have with the fuel dot coming lose in flight. I have to remember to stick it back in for the photo ops. Pictures are from the IMAA giant scale meet in Kingston Ontario Aug 21st
RE: Top Flite Giant P47 arf IS coming
I have been flying the tail off this thing all summer and had some issues with working out the landings and finally I got it. It flys so well that I was trying to land it like my sport planes. I have found that it likes to be flown in with power and when I do that it is a piece of cake. Needless to say I was a bit rough on the landing gear for the first while. A photographer comes to our fun flys and he takes some awesome pics. I wish the one gear was up all the way, the good news is it came down no problem

Jet ranger Mine looks exactly like the post at 443 except that I have two flat reciever packs side by side and the ignition battery on top of them. Foam and tie straps to keep it all in place, it just clears the cowl

RE: Top Flite Giant P47 arf IS coming
I mounted my two 5 cell 2000mah reciever batteries and my 4 cell 2000mah ignition battery on top of the engine box in front of the firewall. It balanced a little nose heavy with my dle55. Maiden today and 3 flights total. This plane is a pussy cat, the nicest plane I have flown to date. My engine has very little time on it so I was taking it easy but it still has lots of power. Take off runs are short and on low rates it flys very scale. The winds were light about 5kms and I didn't even bother with the flaps. It slows way down for landing. Once lined up I cut the throttle and it just came in. This thing makes me look good. Alot of pre flight nail bitting for nothing.

RE: Top Flite Giant P47 arf IS coming
I lined my DLE55 up perfectly with the cross markings on the firewall and all looks right. Then when I go to mount the cowl the prop shaft is to the right of centre when looking at it. is there some opposite thrust or somthing? anybody else have this issue? The cowl is lined up evenly at the back and this is the way it must be up front just to let the prop clear the cowl. can't push it back any more either without breaking something.

Thats pretty funny, no I don't plan to do any 3d at least not on purpose. This is my firts gas large scale model and it seems like everyone I talk to has an opinion and say I should do this or that. so I thought I best post and see what the actual builders/flyers of this model are doing. Thanks for your comments

RE: Top Flite Giant P47 arf IS coming
hey p47pilot Your muffler is a bisson muffler. The B.C.M stand for bisson custom mufflers. they are a canadian company here in ontario. I just finished installing mine with my dle55 and also had to carve a bit off one edge of the firewall. I am just about ready to mount the cowl and would love to see some photos of the opening you made for the muffler exit, usually cut way to much out of my cowls. Has any body run the engine for any length of time with muffler so close to the firewall?
