RE: Warbird Tuesday's in Minneapolis 2010
Hey Noah, I will try next summer to be in the mix again and start another Tuesday night thread. As Jeff said, I started a new job and have been commuting to the west coast every week. It has really cut into my hobby......but it is a great place to work. I couldn't be happier with my new job. Are we going to see you at Owatonna or Fon Du Lac this year? I know you moved south somewhere.......you should hook up with Dick and Howard down in OK and drive up with them (I think you moved down there didn't you?). They always come out with a great group of guys and a bunch of beautiful airplanes. Hope to see you next week. Dave Bentwings - most of the local MSP flying is done at Sodbusters up in Lake Elmo. It's off of 94 and Manning Avenue on the NE side of Minneapolis. It's a haul for me but if I'm in town I try to make it. Otherwise, some weekends are down in Owatonna. You should try to make the warbird event this coming weekend in Owatonna MN. If you have not been, it is a great show.

Northern Alliance Military Fly In - 2012 (Owatonna MN)
I will be flying at the NAMFI warbird event this year (Friday and Saturday) and will bring my camera and try to post some pictures here of the event. (I haven't quit the hobby as has been reported). We have a great group of people that show up every year from across the US and Canada. The facilities are great and the club puts on an excellent event. Looking forward to flying with my friends again from WI, CO, AR, OK, IA, and Canada. Here's the club's site with information about the fly in - http://www.smmac.com/smmac/namfi/Welcome.html August 10-12 2012 It will be a great weekend so if you guys can make it, please come out and fly. Feel free to post up pictures of the event here. Looking forward to a great weekend of flying. Dave

RE: Need a 12 ft. Spitfire Cowl-any moldmakers out there?
Spitfire is looking good buddy. Looking forward to seeing it in the air. It makes my 90 inch spitfire look really small......... We had 5 (6 if you include a foamie) spitfires out and all flew well. Jeff had the large one. Cal, Kirk and I all flew Yellow Spits and Cal also flew his FiberClassics spitfire. Other than the temp approaching 95 it was a great day. Dave

RE: Yellow AC T-6 wheels ????
I'm not familiar with the Yellow T6 wheel but if they are similar to the Spitfire or P-47 wheels, here is how you do it. The spitfire and Jug wheels both use a hard foam tire and a two piece wheel that screw together. Take the Hard foam tire and park your car on the tire. I drive my suburban over the two foam tires and let it sit on them for 5-10 minutes. When you move the car off the tires they will be flat. You can now screw the two wheel halves together easily. The hard foam tires will expand to original shape in a few hours. Good luck. Dave

RE: The complete YELLOW AIRCRAFT SPITFIRE thread.
Hi Brad, Sorry to hear about your gear issue. The pins on the Yellow gear are really not that strong. I've bent a few in my time on different spitfires. The good news is this.......I'd rather break the pin that connects the gear leg to the upper than to replace the gear rails and undoubtedly having to redo the top wing skin when the gear punch through. I've done both...... That being said, I've had some pretty hard hits and the pins don't just shear so possible you had a very weak pin. I don't know but I do know it's an easy fix. Hope to see it back in the air soon. Here's a few pics of one of my yellow spits I flew last weekend at the Indiana Warbird Campaign. The pictures were taken by Roger Russell. Thanks Roger. There was one other yellow spitfire with Leo's bubble conversion flown nicely by Joe. We put them up together on Saturday. Dave

RE: Yellow Zero w/G-45, What Prop?
Hey Tony, You can't go wrong with a plain old Zinger 18-8/14. IMO they are the best bang for the buck prop with the zenoah engines. I use these exclusively on my yellow spitfires and on my G-62 engined planes I run a Zinger 20-8/14. Give it a try. I don't think you will be disappointed with the performance. Dave

RE: 3W Bearcat
The 3W Bearcat is a very nice flyer. The plane doesn't have any real instruction manual so you have to just build from experience but there's a few threads on here that will greatly assist your build. Mine was built by a friend of mine named Howard Davidson. I retro fit the Sierra gear in it. The gear are the non articulating gear. The are longer but don't "shrink" on retraction so they are not 100 percent scale. They do look the part though when down. Once you get comfortable with the speed on landing it can land so slow that the longer legs are no issue at all. Off the top of my head I think it weighs a little over 45 pounds. The weight isn't an issue even if heavier though. You have a lot of wing area on it. The key is just to get comfortable flying it. Mark Shapiro is flying his with a Moki radial and there's another guy in Florida with one (can't remember his name, I think it's also Dave). I have an old 3w-120 on mine. It flies it great. Plenty of vertical for large loops and good speed. It's not reno racer fast but is very scale. I've never seen one fly with the radial but can imagine they are great. I'm sure Mark will chime in. I'd say do the trade. You won't find a nicer looking Bearcat that flies as good as the 3W. Let me know if you have any questions. I don't get on here too much but fee free to shoot me an email and I'll get back to you if you have any questions. Dave

RE: The complete YELLOW AIRCRAFT SPITFIRE thread.
Hi Brad, Your spit looks great. Might I suggest a cg of 5.75 inches. I have owned 6 yellow spitfires (have 2 flying now and a kit waiting to be built) and all have flown perfectly at 5.75 inches back from the leading edge. Trust me on the CG. It will be perfect. It will help a bit with taxi as well as it is very rare for it to nose over as long as you have full up elevator on taxi. I also made a thin ply shim that I put on the aft gear rails. It gets the wheels just a tad bit further out and also aids in preventing nose overs..... Good luck with the maiden. Dave

RE: Spitfire CARF-Models 2011 Build Thread. Started by Lazy Eight & WARBIRDRCER
Hey Guys, I'll try and shed some light on the correct CG by finding out where I was on my Fiberclassics. I owned the older Fiberclassics Spitfire and flew it for some years. It's basically the same plane as the Comp Arf. The Fiberclassics skin was much thinner and more fragile but actually weighed more than the new construction Comp Arf. I have the Comp Arf but it's still in the box waiting for me to build it. My FC weighed in at 43 pounds. I flew it with a 3w-80 inline and then went to a quadra 100. I never had any issues with tipping it over on landing and thought the setup was perfect. I think the new Comp Arf spitfire will come in at least 5 pounds lighter unless it's really scaled out. When I get some time this next week, I'll try and dig up the FC manual and my notes to see where I had the CG at. I would assume it was right at 25 percent MAC as that is generally where I balance my planes at but I'll double check the number to be sure. It was a fantastic flyer and I'm looking forward to the Comp Arf build. I have an inline 104cc that I'm going to use. It is overkill but the sound of the inline is really nice. Dave

RE: Spitfire CARF-Models 2011 Build Thread. Started by Lazy Eight & WARBIRDRCER
Hey Roy, Have you started your Spit yet? Mine is still sitting in the box. I've managed to move it around the shop a bit but have not laid a hand on her yet. I'm also in need of some resin stacks. Vic C. was going to try to make a set but I haven't talked with him since Denver. He also has a nice set of cannons that either he or ScottDog made. I saw them on O'meara's spit and if anyone is doing the later model MK's with the cannons, they look very nice. The functional exhaust system looks really nice but the price will keep me from buying one. I'm sure it will sound great with it...... Dave

RE: ASM Lancaster?
Hello SpeerRacer, You speak of what you do not know - with the demise of that Conachen Lancaster. "QUOTE" Well, your going to see a lot of this. Your lucky. You have experience with twins. Most of the people who will buy these planes will have none. This will be the result. I found a YouTube of a Lancaster spiraling in to its death. You could here the remaining engines screaming at full power. He had crashed before he took off! The plane told him when it turned 90 degrees left that the left engines were going at a different speed than the right. He took off anyway? Go dead stick, drop the nose, glide to an off field landing. Minor damage vs total loss. "END QUOTE" Jeff Quesenberry built that Conachen Lanc and it was piloted by Opie Logue. Between the two of those guys they probably have more multi engine time than you and I have single time put together. They have built and flown twins and 4 engines that were over 200 inch wingspans so they did not just go buy an arf and try to launch it one a nice Sunday. They have both flown almost any kind of multi engine plane you can think of from Lancasters, B-17's, B-24's, Mossy's, P-38's, P-61's etc. all in the 10 foot wingspan plus....... The plane in question was a maiden flight and more than likely the first flight for that airframe. I do not believe Mr. Conachen ever built and flew the plane before he started selling them. Ty had one way back (did you ever fly her Ty)? and there's another friend of ours down in Oklahoma that is flying one on electric power. The engines (4 zenoah G-26's) were broken in, tuned, and tuned some more. On that day they sounded perfect while we were running them up. The left turn on Takeoff was a combination of Opie not getting on the rudder right away and the fact that the Lancaster's rudder's are really quite small. Once she started going left it was going left......yes he could have aborted T/O but up there we fly at a huge sod farm so no obsticles as you can see. It was making full power on all engines when she lifted off. The rest is history. Too bad because it was a beautiful bird and Jeff put a lot of time into her. Just wanted to clear up that this was not due to their lack of experience flying Multi's. Dave

RE: Warbirds Over The Rockies
Casey, Jeff Q. and I made it home last night. It was a long drive but well worth it. The weather was perfect all weekend. The last time I was at WBOTR, it was at Chatfield State Park down in Denver so this was my first time up in Ft. Collins. Brian and all the locals really put on a nice event. We had three great days of flying and I had an equally great time at the banquet. The "Flying Greek" Colonel Steve N. Pisanos was fantastic. He is sharp as a tack and one of those guys that we can never thank enough for their service to this country. What a great story.......a true American hero. Evan's save with the 335 was epic.....thought it was gone for sure when it went out of sight. Vic - I googled the heck out of ralings or wralings and can't locate any spit exhausts in Canada. See if you can find out where you got them. His Seafury fuselage is first class. Anyone looking for good glasswork, just check out one of Vic's fuses. We met a bunch of great guys from CA that were there for the first time like me. John, Lynsell, Daryl and the rest of the gang brought out some great looking planes. Looking forward to doing some more flying with these guys next year. Was great to see Sr. up and moving around. Looked like he really enjoyed seeing Jr. fly his spitfire. Dino and Jason Noll put on some nice formation flights with the Mustang and C-47. Jimmy and the guys from MO put on some nice flights with the Mustangs and Stuka's as well. Ryan was busy doing the jet jock thing. You need to break out Coffee's Pot again. Nice flights on the 262. Did you ever get your ice cream cone from Jeff? All in all it was a great event. BTW, someone took home my air compressor. It has my name on the side of it. If you ended up with an extra one when you got home shoot me an email. Dave

RE: 3W Bearcat Build - Oh Yeah!
You will be happy at 7.5 inches. It will not leap straight up and you will not have to pull hard to get it to lift off. Just a nice perfect climb out every time. I just had mine out at our warbird event in Owatonna and then last weekend at Fond Du Lac. My wife came with to WI and one of the things she said was why don't you have smoke on your Bearcat since it's done up in the Blue Angels scheme. I'm thinking of putting one in as well. I had one on a Ziroli size and it really put out the smoke using Bennett smoke oil. The only "trouble" is the mess. It is really messy stuff.....I had scale exhaust on the Ziroli and who ever was holding it on startup got a leg full of smoke spatter even with the pump off. So I'm undecided as of yet but may do a pump over the winter. Did you ever resurrect your Spitfire? I finally put a "re-maiden" on one of my yellow's tonight. It had been waiting in the shop for a few years after I knocked out the firewall and broke the wing. She's flying as good as new again. I always liked your paint scheme on the spit you had. Dave

RE: TA 152H Meister Scale Project Grun 4
Great project. I bought Ty's original Ta-152 from Jeff Q. It has a 144 inch span with a quadra 75 and honestly flys very well with that powerplant. It weighed in somewhere in the low 40's but flew like a kite. Loops were easy and rolls were somewhat slow with that big wingspan. Look forward to seeing your bird in the air. Dave

RE: 3W Bearcat Build - Oh Yeah!
Hi Mark, I am flying mine at 7.5 inches back from the wing root where it meets the fuselage. It is absolutely perfect......Howard was flying it at the same and I did check with Arnold Marcus when he had his. He was also at 7.5 inches back. I have never measured my throws but I tend to have quite a lot of throw on ailerons and elevators on all of my planes. I can measure them tomorrow for you if you like. My plane comes in at 48.5 pounds dry but it flies like it's a 30 pound plane. Very light on the controls and slows down to a crawl on landing with full flaps. When I bring the throttle slowly up on the T/O roll, it will become airborne at half throttle. I think you will be pleasantly surprised as to how nice it flies. Looking forward to seeing some pictures of your plane. Dave

At least Cal is here in the chance you need some legal council when Jeffy or Doug do a swan dive onto your driveway. Also, Jen will be getting some stick time and will be flying the pants off of one of those electrics next year. RE: Warbirds & Classics over the Midwest
Another great event was put on by the Fond Du Lac club. Thanks to all your club members from the MN gang. We met up with our friends again for some great warbird flying. All the regulars were there this year with some of the best looking planes to be seen anywhere. Carl B. was flying his new Boxcar, Dennis Crooks came out with a new 4 motor (2 props and two turbines). Paul L, Rich, Chuck and the rest of the MI gang were here. Dave Chew, Doug and Eric from Robart, Sam P, Brian and Ryan from CO, Leo and Zach, and the list go's on and on. Merlin and Jim N, Pierre, Wes M, Dave White and the rest of the Canadian Embassy who by the way really know how to put up a tent. Their canopy was the only one standing when the straight line winds ended. Next year you guys can put our tents up too...... I didn't take many pictures this year. Just too busy flying and socializing. My wife made the trip for the first time this year and we are already booked at the Mayville Inn for next year. All of the MN guys had a blast flying at arguably one of the best flying fields in the country. We managed to do a nice "Heritage" flight with 6 or 7 German planes that was really a lot of fun. Here are some pictures from the event. Dave

My good friend Cal was out this evening with his electric Me-262. It's an Airworld kit so not nearly as large as yours but it flew great. Not sure of the exact setup but I know it has WeMo 90mm Midi's and he's running two 6c 5000 packs. It's probably around 17 pounds RTF. Great flyer and it really moves out. Good luck with yours. RE: Warbird Tuesday's in Minneapolis 2010
We were all out on Tuesday but didn't get pictures (except of my new Firefly). The weather has been great all week so we decided to head back today. Weather was perfect. Wayne came with his Ziroli C-47 gunship. G-38's I brought out my 3w Bearcat. 3w-120 Jeff brought out his 110 inch Bearcat built off of modified Ziroli plans. Air Hobbies 8.4 twin with scale exhaust. Makes the 3w Bearcat look small. Kirk had his Tri-plane and he maidened a yellow JUG but I forgot to get pics of the P-47. Cal flew his Meister 190. I think he has a 3w-75 JeffEE had out his D7 and again I didn't manage to get any pics. Steve from Owatonna was up but left the Corsair at home. On Tuesday I flew a Fairey Firefly that Carl Bachhuber was nice enough to let me play with. I flew it two times and it is great. He built it with the scale "fairey youngman" flaps and it is neat to see in action. It has a 116 inch wingspan. (Not sure why the picture won't preview but you can see it via the link) EDIT.......converted the picture to JPEG and looks like it is showing up. Dave

RE: ZIROLI P-61 BLACK WIDOW BUILD
Hi Sam, Forgive me if it's already answered in the thread....I didn't want to scroll through 18 pages of posts. I noticed your bird has the scale spoilers and the sport scale ailerons. Do you think there will be any problem with this setup? I have seen a few fly with the spoilers and just like the full scale, they are very effective and don't require a large aileron. I just wouldn't want to see it be too aileron sensitive on your maiden with the longer ailerons and the spoilers. Might not be a factor at all but just wondering if you had any thoughts on it. Sorry if you have already addressed it earlier. Hope to see it out here in August along with your Corsair, Panther, Jug, Spitfire and all of your other planes. Pack em all in that new trailer. Dave

We are usually out on Tuesday's weather permitting. Do you fly at the club? If not your more than welcome to fly as a guest. What engine do you have powering the solo three blader? Dave
