RE: Supertigre X 45 help
I ran a ST .45 in a MK Arrow(.40). Fine engine! The ST header was made for the "O" ring and had a spring loop to hold the header in place. It looped around the the cylinder head. I ran Zinger 10/6's(pre APC days). I would love to see an Arrow 40! Great flying airplane! Norm Whittle built my Arrow and I bought it from him. I believe that I did use the Mac's header instead and removed the stub and used bolts to mount the header to the engine.

RE: Bootlegger?
Both are good airplanes. I had a Compensator and then a Bootlegger. My Bootlegger had a flat stab and was a great flyer. Both ships had ST power-side exhaust on the Compensator and rear exhaust on the Bootlegger. I never had a problem with the polyester resin fuse. Maybe just lucky. The Boot was extremely fast airplane and very smooth.

RE: Dirty Birdy ARF
Tony, I agree! Bring back Goldberg Retracts! Dirt cheap and worked all the time once set up correctly. I would now use two retract servos instead of that long rod to the nosegear. Frank

RE: House 0f Balsa 1/12 P51 (.061-.10) build
One solution to the plastic top is to paint it on the inside and then use canopy glue to attach it to the fuse. Then cover the fuse and overlap the glue joint with the covering per pkoury's method. Less chance for of melting the plastic.

RE: Building a Tiporare .40
Chino, Nice job of painting! On your clear coat, test it before you spray it on the airplane to make sure that it is compatible with the Lustrecoat. That "Frog" tape works pretty good, doesn't it? Frank

RE: How much time do you guys spend on flight trimming your planes?
Bryan, I'd say that you got your $30 worth of plane. The education that you are getting from this plane is priceless. I agree with all of the replies made here as no two people trim their aircraft alike. A Tower Kaos ARF will make a good choice but if you want a true airplane, then maybe you should build one to suit your needs. Frank

RE: Colored Silk
I have about 10 yards of Dharma 5mm silk. Good stuff. They have a tutorial on their website on dying silk. I also bought their acid dye to color my silk red. PD1 is right about washing the silk twice before dying it. That will removed the "sizing" chemical in order for the dye to take. I remember using Rit dye to color silk and then using a salt in the mix to make the silk color proof. I love the translucent look of colored silk. I remember a pattern contest in Pensacola years ago. A guy, Al Pinson, was flying a Jerry Nelson Pegasus. It was done in red silk with many, many coats of clear dope. Rubbed out to a brilliant shine, it took your breath away when the sun caught it just right. It was the first time that I saw someone flying an old Bramco reed set with separate control box. The good ole days! Frank

RE: SIMLA BUILD THREAD
Neat workshop? How do you do that????? I hate clutter but it always finds me! Duane, that Sigment is the best for gluing wing sheeting. I wished it was carried by more hobby shops. I grew up using Ambroid. Testor's cement was also good for gluing sheeting. Your wing looks very good! 7.25 lbs for a King Altair? That would fly sweet. Please let us follow your build. Frank

RE: SIMLA BUILD THREAD
Guys, check the mags for foam cutters. Honeycombed wings are a extreme method for lighter weight, most folks don't use that method. As posted earlier, scraping most of the epoxy off, using a flat(true) surface and a ton of weight produce light wings. I use old model magazines to weight my wings. Vacuum bagging is the best way (from what I've read) to sheet wings. The weights press the sheeting tightly to the cores plus squeeze the excess epoxy out(if you didn't scrape the excess earlier). I also never added a plywood joiner. Fiberglassing the center section is sufficent. I also scrape the excess off of the cloth. 8.25 lbs for the King Altair would make for a great flying airplane. My XLT weighed that amount and flew great! (A honking Rossi .60 on a pipe helped too!) I have in mind to power my Simla with a DLE 20. Frank

RE: SIMLA BUILD THREAD
Just as David said, use laminating epoxy. A honeycombed wing has diagonal cuts with the foam removed so that the use of epoxy is reduced in order for a lighter wing. Throw rocks- maybe a poor choice of word, however, I just wanted to start a conversation on the use of foam wings. Bt the way, I started R/C in 1960 and sometimes the years get confused as to when I first used foam wings. I meant no disrespect. I have enjoyed this thread and hope to continue to add comments.

RE: SIMLA BUILD THREAD
Guys, I am not now building a Simla but have my name on the call list. Be that as it may, I think that the better way to build the Simla wing is to use foam cores. Yes, I know that may sound like blasphemy but, using the contest wood that you all are using plus epoxy adhesive can produce a wing that is light and strong. If you are so inclined, honeycomb wings can be lighter. Also, you can use foam for the tail, too. You guys are all great builders but that wing sounds pretty tough. Now, start throwing rocks at this post!!!! Frank

RE: SIMLA BUILD THREAD
That paint stand is like a jig that was previously posted in a magazine years ago(I forget which). However, you made it out of pvc and it appears to be an excellent upgrade! I will be sure to copy it. The original had an additional arm to hold the wing. It was made of wood and attached to the wing at the aileron servo plate(Remember using just one aileron servo?). Finishing a pattern model leaves one with a multitude of questions. Film is the lightest(unless you can finish an airplane the the U/C stunt guys!). However, I used to use K&B clear to attach the 3/4oz fiberglass. Then, Superpoxy primer, sanded off and the Superpoxy color. Silk and dope produced lighter finishes but have you priced silk and dope lately? I got around that by buying Randolph clear and thinner from Aircraft Spruce and then 5mm silk from Dharma Trading. The urethanes are great if you have the safety equipment to use them. Painting a pattern airplane is my favorite method but use anything that suits you.

RE: Bridi Super Kaos Build
As to the elevator joiner, Joe provided 1/8" welding rod for the joiner. They had ground the edges of the prongs to a taper. Plenty strong! Just make sure that the elevators are in the same plane are you will never be able to trim the airplane!

RE: Ace Allstar Bipe
I have a kit that construction was started already. The wood was the heaviest that I've seen! When I build it, I'm using the kit wood for patterns only. This is an airplane that must be built light to fly well. Plus, don't use full size servos. Hitec 82 MG servos would be a good servo to use. AND-put a scarf on that pilot to blow in the breeze!!!!!

RE: NEW DLE 20cc Gasser! (Data & Links 1st Post)
Thanks, Charlie and Bob! About 15" is all that I can go with the Simla's gear. The one in the MA article had barely enough clearance with a 15" two bladed prop and an OS 90FX. Sue would like to see that cannister set-up!

Has anybody tried a 3 blade prop and what were your impressions. The reason that I'm asking is that I would like to install my DLE 20 in a trike gear Simla and need prop clearance that I can't get with a 16 or 17" prop. Thanks!

RE: Bridi Sun Fli 5 Build Thread
Jeff, unless you plan to use a pipe, a 12 oz tank is plenty! And, the SunFli doesn't need a pipe! The original SunFli didn't have retracts, to my knowledge. Try a 12 oz tank and I think you will be pleased. Plus the 12oz gives you more room for the retract if you decide to use them. I must admit that I used a pipe on my Super Kaos and it was a rocket. Too much power is quite adicting, though! However the tail of the Super Kaos almost came off in a split "S" and made a believer out of me.

RE: ED KAZMIRSKI'S SIMLA in Model Aviation
I. too, fly from a slightly "bumpy" field so I don't want to fool with retracts.(I certainly had enough of them when flying pattern in the '80s.) I can't wait until my March issue of MA! Thanks, again for the info. Frank

RE: ED KAZMIRSKI'S SIMLA in Model Aviation
Thanks for the reply on my question! The Simla has to be the most gorgeus airplane that I've ever seen!(And I started flying R/C in 1960). I do think that the DLE 20 would be perfect for the Simla. One would have to make sure the landing gear is long enough for a 17" prop. Did the original Simla have retracts? Frank

RE: FOUND: Cutlass Fiberglass Fuse w/Goldberg Retracts!
Dave, I used SonicTronics air valves to operate my Goldberg retracts. They wacked the gear up and down with authority. Now days, I would use two retract servos: one for the nose gear and one for the wing. One servo installation is a pain plus the hassle to connect the nosegear to the wing servo. But, it can be done. Good luck with your purchase! Frank
