RE: WOW!!! H9 Cap232 80"
Ben: I used 4721's running on 6v. You will love flying this plane I cannot describe properly just how well it flies. You will actually be relaxing behind the controls. Brian: I like the idea of using these kinds of gloves I never thought about it. You can still have a close fit on the hand to feel the prop but not worry about the prop wacking you knuckles. I was going to sleep with the prop to show it that I was it's friend but my dog and wife did not go for it :) KB: I have a supersonic pitt and it fits perfect and allows me to clear the engine box without modifying it at all. I have heard that using the slimline pitts some people needed to modify the engine box to clear it with that muffler. I needed to cut a large hole in the firewall to the needle valves and carb though. I installed the engine offset by 1/2" to the right when facing the firewall from the front. I also used 3/4" standoffs and with all that I did not need any added weight in the plane. I put the battery in the compartment just ahead of the leading edge of the wing to balance it. I used a template and a temp firewall to make sure it would fit where I wanted. I learned the hardway that measuring twice is a good thing not a waste of time. Gary: I like the idea of having the plane tied down. These engines are not forgiving and give me a whole new respect for machinery. I can't imagine people with the larger 210 twins how they do it. Do they use a truck to hold it down :) LuvBipes: You are right I would have never purchased the plane until Chief Aircraft had it on sale for $299 I just could not resist at that price.

WOW!!! H9 Cap232 80"
I wanted to share my first gasser flight with you all. I flew today for the first time my H9 cap232 and this is my first gas engine plane. All I can say is WOW this plane is incredible. This plane is as gentil to takeoff, land and fly as my old Eagle 2 trainer. It's extremly gracefull in the air but turn on the dual rate and this thing can do it all. I started the engine and I was only going to do some running up and down the runway to see how it feels but the minute it went into the wind it very gentilly started to rise from the runway and I just could not resist so I brought it up high and started to check it out and it was awesome. It needed one click of elevator and one click of aileron. I heard on RCuniverse that people liked this plane but now that I flew it I have to agree with all of them that this plane is perfect in every way. It make you wonder why H9 has discontinued this model when it flies so beautifully. I have a ZDZ40RV on it with a supersonic muffler and with only 2 tanks run in on a fishing scale I get 21lbs static thurst and the plane weights 14.8lbs which makes it light for this engine and with a few more tanks and some leaning out it will be a great combo. I had heard some really large numbers for weight but mine was actually light. I am also using lighter batteries then most people use. I have 1100mah for the ignition and 1500mah/6v for the radio equipment. It took a little getting used to the engine and setting the low needle to get a nice quick start with it. With a glow you can have a pretty bad needle setting but with a good starter you can start just about anything if it's in the ballpark. But the gas engine it needs to be just so for it to start and not flood. But once started this engine ran like a top. Warm starts were great 2 flips and you are running again. So the only thing that scares me is starting this engine with my hand. It's a scary proposition to flip a prop that size with an engine the could ripe your arm off before stopping. I already had the engine hit my nuckles when you are trying to get it cold started and man does it hurt. I was thinking of putting a cone and using my starter to get it started but I would be willing to hear more from others and how they deal with starting gas engines. All in all a great day :) Enjoy! PS:here are a few pics of the plane.

RE: Break in question and confusion
Phew!!! I feel much better thank you for the information :) I thought that I had to run the engine on a test stand before putting it into a plane. Even during the 24 oz run this engine was idling like a champ and would easilly run in a plane even with only 1/4 throttle available. I have not set the high speed needle since I did not run the engine past 1/4 throttle yet since it was the first tank. On the second tank I will set the high speed for a rich setting and then put in the plane for flight. It's going into a H9 80" cap 232 which I cannot wait to fly. My first large plane :). I was very surprised at how much thrust this engine can produce with a 22x8 prop. Thanks again for your feedback.

RE: Break in question and confusion
I checked the spark plug and it's tight but it still has that compression leak when you turn the prop.

break in confusion
Ok so I have a ZDZ 40RV which I am just starting to break in. Before I ran the engine it had very little leakage of compression when you turned the prop. So I ran 24 Oz in the engine with a 32:1 fuel to oil mixture and now the compression is leaking quite a bit when you flip the prop slowly. You can hear it leak when you turn the prop. Is this normal when you first start to break in these gas engines ? Just a newbie with gas wanting to know if this is normal. Enjoy!

RE: throttle linkage for gas engines
I have added a longer control arm on the throttle and now it takes much less of the servo to move the throttle so it seems to be a good middle. I have a spring in case the ball link lets go so the engine will go to idle and I have some tension to keep things tight and I have little power drain due to the mechanical advantage of the longer arm. All in all I think that should be ok. I am now breaking in my engine. This will be the first gallon of fuel which seems to be the most critical. I have to say that I was very surprised by the power these little engines have compared to smaller glow engines like a .46ttpro. For such a small engine it really turns a 22x8 and creates tons of static thrust. enjoy!

throttle linkage for gas engines
Well keep in mind that I am new to gas but I have probably a silly question. I noticed on my ZDZ engine that the throttle spring is very tough and would probably drain my battery needlessly during flight since the throttle servo is always under load. Do people still use the carb with the spring or do you remove the spring so that the servo for throttle is not under continous load. In the nitro world we do not have springs on carbs so I was just wondering. Enjoy!

ZDZ40 RV-L what muffler
What is a good performing muffler for the ZDZ 40 RV-L I am new to gas and I am looking to your more seasoned people to provide some kind of info if possible. I have heard about the bisson with cut sortened pipes, the supersonic, etc..... Do any of you use tune pipes on your gas engines and if so how do you find it and what pipe do you use. enjoy!

RE: H9 80" cap232 and ZDZ40 info needed
The engine is the zdz 40 RV-L so I presume it's the better one. He said it was purchased about 8 months ago. Dick Hanson: When you say open muffler do you have any models in mind that would work with the ZDZ40. I hear people talk about the canister mufflers but how would they fit on the plane compared to the bisson for instance ? Well so far the response is do the 50cc engine versus the 40cc.

H9 80" cap232 and ZDZ40 info needed
I currently have a H9 cap232 80" which by the way is a really nice looking plane but I can get my hands on a zdz40 for trade with some ducted fan stuff so I am wondering if that engine is good enough for this plane to do hovers, harriers, flat spins, waterfalls etc... and normal IMACC stuff. I am new to this gas engine stuff so I am not sure how power full this ZDZ40 will be for this plane. Let me know Enjoy!

RE: Great beginner 3D plane "SPAD 3D" WOW!!!!
Having the CG forward will make the plane harder to 3d if it's to far forward. So it's a matter of bringing it forward a little at a time until you like it or you can do it the other way around. Go forward an inch or so and see if you like and you can go aft from their. I can't beleive I actually love to fly a spad type plane [:D]. Enjoy!

RE: Great beginner 3D plane "SPAD 3D" WOW!!!!
I did have to add a fair amount of nose weight to bring the CG forward since at 6" from leading edge the plane was very hard to control in pitch. Bring the CG forward to about 4 1/2 to 5" and it will fly much better and more predictable until you get used to how the plane flies. Once I did that the plane quieted down and flew flawlessly even at high angles of attack at a crawl. Enjoy!

RE: Interest in 3D Flying
I just flew my spad 3d today and I am also new to 3d and man this thing is great. For the cost you just cannot go wrong. It's not the nicest plane but you will have a great time flying it. I was skeptical at first and even while I was building it. I was wondering if it would even fly but yep she flys and does a heck of alot more then that. By the way you can put one together faster then even an ARF which is good in my books. This will definetly help me be a better pilot. Enjoy!

Great beginner 3D plane "SPAD 3D" WOW!!!!
Well I have finally found a nice plane to take me beyond my Great Planes Dazzler. I built my first spad plane and I have to say that it goes together faster and easier then a normal ARF. I just flew it this morning and man does this fly nice and will do just about anything you can throw at it. It will land at a snails pace but you can turn on the 3d rates and it becomes a wicked aerobatic plane. She is not the prettiest in my fleet but she sure is the funnest one. I am not the greatest pilot in the world but you can harrier this thing all day long and then transition into a hover without any effort. I find that this plane is giving me more confidence to try some of the more risky manuevers down low. Heck at $30CDN this is a disposal plane. So if your are looking to get into 3d at a rock bottom cost but with tons of fun this is definetly a plane for you. Enjoy!

RE: u can do 46 wing problem
Well I lost my ucando as well due to wing flutter after the first flight. It fluttered for ~1 second and the wing separated. I was using 120oz JR 4721 servos and 4-40 rods with metal clevises. It fluttered at 1/2 throttle with a 61fx running a 12x5 prop I know I was under proping it but I was afraid of flutter but guess what it fluttered and half the wing went one way and the rest came crashing down. I flew my dazzler full speed at 100mph that has large control surfaces on the wing and never fluttered. Why does this specific plane flutter so much and so unpredictably ?

RE: Hurricane fans?
I run a byro enforcer with an OS91vrdf and a hurricane and all I have to say is that it does work better then byron. I ran the normal byron and on the ground the byron seemed to pull harder but in flight the hurricane is much better. Better vertical and speed. Enjoy!

RE: ucando no more
The OS61 on a 12x6 was loading actually alot and you are right a 12x4 was quite high reving on the ground but I wanted a slow flying plane since I was worried of flutter due to the ailerons being so big and actually having them smaller then the trailing edge. This has a tendancy to induce flutter. Having a 12x4 on it would keep it slow. The news today is that I have just purchase a H9 funtana to replace this plane since I need a practice plane for 3d and imac stuff. I don't want to be practicing stuff on my H9 cap232 80". It seems like the funtana is a better plane and should be able to be a good flier with my .61fx. I wonder what prop would be the best prop on that plane and engine combo ? Enjoy!

RE: ucando no more
This was my first ever try at an ARF and I have to say that after putting a good engine in it and a good set of servos which are for the most part stripped now I am very anoyed at ARF's quality. If you build it you know that it will hold in flight since you put it together. In and ARF you are relying on the good people of GreatPlanes to do a good job for you. Well guess what a $229CDN ARF plane is not worth crashing $650CDN dollars of radio equipment and a $300CDN engine. Unfortunetly I also bought at the same time a H9 80" cap 232 that is an ARF. I definetly plan on putting this bird through a few tests prior to installing a $1000CDN engine in it and going for a flight. Enjoy!

ucando no more
Well I got a ucando last week and completed it for my regular sunday flying. It had a .61fx with a 12x4 and JR 4721 for rudder and JR537 for everything else. The model balanced perfectly with no weight anywhere. So far so good. I take it to the field start up the engine and it ran flawlessly so I decided to taxi it and it went into the air like a dream. I needed 3 clicks of aileron and it flew straight as an arrow at half throttle. I did 2 circuits around and decided to see if it would go vertical without any issue and it did not ballistic but it went straight up with little trouble then I decided to kick over the tail and head towards the ground to do a fly by so throttle back and kick over the tail and at idle let the plane come down since the plan did say be carefull of flutter. But wait on the way down with the throttle at idle I hear a quick flrrrt and their goes half the wing going one way and the rest of the plane coming towards tera ferma doing a spiral. So with that being said flutter is a big deal on this plane since the plane was gliding down and it fluttered on one aileron at half throttle I was able to do 2 cuircuits without any issue. What really surprised me is how little time it took to loose half a wing. Their was just a little flutter noise and within a mili second their goes the wing. I would have expected an aileron to let go but a whole half a wing that is odd. The rest of the wing stayed on the fuse even after it hitting the ground in a single piece. I decide to share this with you since I was hoping to use this plane to do some 3d flying but I guess I will need at some other plane since this one does not work for me. Enjoy!

zdz50 engine info
Well I have read the article on the zdz50 in model airplane and they talked about how the ports were designed and they resembled a tune pipe capable engine. So I was wondering why people are not using tune pipes on their gas engines since they are 2 stroke engines and tune pipes make a huge difference on power with a 2 stroke especially if the port timing is ready for it. This would allow smaller engines which are lighter to provide plenty of power to some larger planes. Inquiring minds would like to know. Enjoy!

H9 80" cap232 need info on dimensions
I am hearing some really good things with the moki on the cap232 so you are confirming something which I am very happy about since the moki is fairly cheap compared to a zdz50 and seems to have plenty of mustard for the cap. I feel like a mother waiting for it's child now. Even though I ordered it today I am already pacing around for it. Enjoy!

This is great I have measured things out and it will fit in my 89 ford probe. Unbeleivable but it will fit. Thank you for getting me those dimensions I feel better now. It would have been very frustrating to get such a nice plane and leave it in the garage. I like the zdz50 but man does that moki2.10 have a weight advantage and very good power. I want 3d at the best possible cost without going overboard on the engine for nothing. Now I am wondering which to get. The only thing I hate about glow is cleaning the plane after a flying session. H9 80" cap232 need info on dimensions
Well I am thinking of purchasing a H9 80" cap232 but I need to know from people who have one what are the real dimensions of the plane is so that I know if it will fit in my vehicle. I need to know the width of the wing since I already know the length which is 80" I also need to know the height of the rudder from the ground to the top of the rudder. I also need to know the height of the top of the cowl at the front from the gound. I also need to know the length of the plane from the end of the rudder to the front of the cowl. Thank you for helping out this will be my first gas airplane so I ma really anxious to get it ordered and flying. I am planning on getting a zdz50 as the engine. Enjoy!

sig cobra hits the 90mph
It definetly does not take alot to go around 120 but higher then that and things start getting harder and interesting. My clipped wing cub with an OS 60FX did 115 mph on radar. I was very impressed and so were many other guys at the club flying some F-20 tigersharks which I was keeping up to very nicely. I was very dissapointed when I flew my TGA F-15 byron setup and it did 117mph. It was almost slower then my cub and it was painfull to the ego. But now my byro enforcer does 140mph and I am now happy again :) enjoy!

pod for enforcer
Well a really good way to get a really straight and easy POD would be to use a pot for plants that is tappered. Cover it with wax paper and then cover it with 2 oz glass cloth and epoxy. Do that 3 times and you will have a really strong POD cone that you can add your formers to it. If you cannot find the write POT take a couple of pieces of styrofoam glue them together and carve one out that has the proper shape. Then do the same thing as before to glass it. If you want a good to make sure that the pod builds straight with wood make sure that the stringers are exactly the same lenght before you start building the POD. Then you can be sure that the rings and formers are always straight. You just need to make sure the first former is 90 degrees to the building board and the rest will fall in place. Enjoy!
